Moving beyond traditional marketing, platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube now serve as full-fledged entrepreneurial infrastructures—enabling ideation, brand building, fundraising, customer engagement and venture scaling. Through a critical examination of strategic platform use, influencer ecosystems, social commerce tools and ethical considerations, the chapter highlights the unique ways in which startups leverage digital culture to generate visibility and competitive advantage. Case studies across diverse geographies demonstrate how startups move from hashtag virality to unicorn valuation. It concludes by forecasting how AI, Web3 and immersive technologies will redefine future startup–social media synergies

Ethics in Future Education refers to the principles, values, standards, and moral responsibilities that guide the development, implementation, governance, and application of educational policies, technologies, research, and institutional practices in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. As higher education undergoes rapid transformation through Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industry 5.0, digital technologies, automation, globalization, and data-driven decision-making, ethical considerations have become central to ensuring that technological advancement serves humanity while preserving fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, inclusion, and human dignity. Ethics provides the moral foundation upon which educational institutions build trust, protect stakeholder interests, encourage responsible innovation, and cultivate socially responsible graduates capable of addressing complex global challenges.The primary objective of ethics in future education is to ensure that educational transformation remains human-centred while promoting academic excellence, social justice, responsible technological development, and sustainable institutional growth. Universities increasingly integrate ethical principles into teaching, research, governance, policy formulation, digital transformation, and community engagement to prepare learners for professional environments where ethical reasoning and responsible decision-making are indispensable. Ethical education extends beyond compliance with legal requirements by encouraging individuals to develop integrity, empathy, accountability, respect for diversity, environmental responsibility, and commitment to the common good.Artificial Intelligence has fundamentally transformed higher education while simultaneously introducing new ethical challenges. AI-powered educational systems support personalized learning, intelligent tutoring, predictive analytics, automated assessment, research analysis, administrative automation, and institutional decision-making. Although these technologies significantly improve efficiency and educational quality, they also raise ethical concerns regarding algorithmic bias, transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy, surveillance, academic honesty, and human autonomy. Universities must therefore establish ethical frameworks that ensure AI systems are developed, deployed, and monitored responsibly while maintaining human oversight and protecting the rights and dignity of students, educators, researchers, and society.Digital transformation has further expanded the ethical responsibilities of educational institutions by increasing dependence on digital platforms, cloud computing, blockchain technologies, learning management systems, virtual classrooms, digital libraries, online assessments, research databases, and institutional information systems. While digital technologies improve accessibility, flexibility, collaboration, and educational innovation, they also generate ethical concerns relating to cyber security, digital equity, misinformation, intellectual property protection, online behaviour, digital well-being, and responsible use of educational technologies. Universities therefore require comprehensive ethical governance mechanisms that balance technological innovation with institutional responsibility and societal trust.Ethics plays a fundamental role in teaching and learning by fostering educational environments characterized by honesty, fairness, respect, inclusion, and mutual responsibility. Faculty members are expected to deliver accurate knowledge, evaluate students impartially, respect diversity, encourage critical thinking, and create inclusive learning experiences that recognize the needs of learners from different cultural, social, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. Students likewise have ethical responsibilities that include academic honesty, respect for intellectual property, responsible collaboration, professional conduct, and ethical use of digital resources. Ethical teaching promotes not only intellectual development but also character formation and lifelong civic responsibility.Research ethics constitute another essential dimension of future education because universities serve as centres of knowledge creation, scientific discovery, and technological innovation. Ethical research requires integrity, transparency, honesty, accountability, informed consent, responsible data management, protection of research participants, avoidance of plagiarism, proper authorship practices, conflict-of-interest disclosure, and adherence to established scientific standards. As Artificial Intelligence increasingly supports research activities through data analysis, literature review, content generation, predictive modelling, and simulation, universities must ensure that AI-assisted research remains transparent, reproducible, ethical, and subject to appropriate human supervision.Institutional governance is closely connected to ethical education because educational leaders establish policies, regulations, strategic priorities, and organizational cultures that shape institutional behaviour. Ethical governance promotes transparency, accountability, fairness, participatory decision-making, responsible financial management, equitable resource allocation, respect for stakeholder rights, and compliance with national and international regulatory frameworks. Governing boards, academic councils, ethics committees, quality assurance units, and administrative leaders collaborate to establish ethical standards that guide institutional operations while strengthening public confidence and organizational credibility.Student development represents a central objective of ethics in future education because graduates are expected not only to possess technical knowledge but also to demonstrate ethical reasoning, professional responsibility, leadership, empathy, intercultural competence, and social commitment. Universities integrate ethics across curricula through interdisciplinary learning, case-based discussions, experiential education, community engagement, service learning, professional ethics courses, and leadership development programmes. Such educational experiences prepare students to address ethical dilemmas arising within healthcare, engineering, business, law, education, environmental management, public administration, information technology, and emerging digital professions.Innovation and entrepreneurship increasingly require ethical consideration because technological progress has profound implications for society, economic development, environmental sustainability, and human well-being. Universities encourage innovation while emphasizing responsible research, ethical product development, sustainable technological advancement, social responsibility, and respect for human rights. Artificial Intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, autonomous systems, quantum computing, and digital platforms offer significant opportunities for innovation, yet they also require careful ethical evaluation regarding fairness, accountability, safety, environmental impact, and long-term societal consequences. Responsible innovation ensures that scientific and technological progress contributes positively to humanity while minimizing potential risks.Data governance has become an increasingly important ethical concern because higher education institutions collect, analyse, and store large volumes of personal, academic, administrative, and research information. Ethical data management requires secure storage, informed consent, privacy protection, transparency, cyber security, responsible data sharing, and compliance with applicable legal and institutional regulations. Artificial Intelligence further increases the importance of ethical data governance because intelligent algorithms depend upon large datasets that must be collected, processed, and utilized responsibly. Universities therefore establish ethical guidelines that protect individual privacy while enabling responsible educational research, institutional analytics, and technological innovation.Globalization has expanded the scope of educational ethics by connecting universities across diverse cultural, political, legal, and social environments. International collaboration requires mutual respect, intercultural understanding, academic freedom, equitable partnerships, responsible knowledge sharing, ethical research collaboration, and protection of intellectual property. Universities participate in global educational networks while ensuring that ethical principles remain consistent across international partnerships, student mobility programmes, collaborative research initiatives, and multinational educational projects. Such global engagement promotes peaceful cooperation, cultural diversity, scientific advancement, and responsible global citizenship.Sustainability represents a fundamental ethical responsibility within future education because universities contribute significantly to environmental stewardship, social justice, economic resilience, and sustainable development. Ethical educational institutions integrate sustainability into teaching, research, campus operations, governance, and community engagement while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities encourage responsible consumption, renewable energy adoption, climate resilience, environmental conservation, inclusive education, gender equality, and ethical leadership, thereby preparing graduates to address global sustainability challenges through informed and responsible action.Assessment and evaluation within higher education must also adhere to ethical principles to ensure fairness, transparency, validity, reliability, and inclusiveness. Universities establish ethical assessment practices that eliminate discrimination, minimize bias, protect confidentiality, promote accessibility, and accurately evaluate student achievement.

This record contains the presentation materials prepared for the Data for Policy July Fireside Chat, “Digital Infrastructures of Democracy,” delivered online on 20 July 2026 by Professor Igor Calzada and chaired by Professor Marta Poblet. The talk presents Calzada’s action-research programme on digital citizenship and the democratic governance of digital infrastructures. Building upon the Oxford Research Encyclopedia article Digital Infrastructures of Democracy, it conceptualises democracy as being increasingly mediated by three interconnected infrastructural layers: material infrastructure, data infrastructure and algorithmic infrastructure. These layers are not politically neutral; their ownership, design and governance shape participation, rights, public accountability and the distribution of power. The presentation connects this conceptual framework with research on AI economics, Web3 decentralisation, the Digital Metropolis, EcoTechnoPolitics, territorial digital inclusion, data cooperatives and anticipatory AI governance. Particular attention is devoted to evidence from the Basque Country and Gipuzkoa, including the emerging supercomputing and quantum ecosystem associated with IBM Quantum System Two. The Basque Country is examined not as a model to be replicated mechanically, but as a city-regional laboratory whose lessons can support context-sensitive institutional learning elsewhere. The central argument is that democratic resilience requires the alignment of technical design, institutional reform and civic agency. Advanced computational capacity becomes a democratic public capability only when institutions can govern technological dependencies, territorialise benefits, ensure accountability, respect ecological limits and preserve meaningful opportunities for public participation and contestation.

The term sustainable has followed us since our school days, a word that once lived in textbooks, now echoes in daily conversations, product labels, and global forums. Sustainability often takes centre stage in discussions around climate change. As digital technology evolved, new innovations like NFTs (non-fungible tokens) sparked fresh debate. While creative in form, NFTs have also raised concerns about energy consumption and digital pollution, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, as noted by Truby (2022). Shattered Dates is a traditional artwork that symbolically captures the fragile state of our climate. The use of bread tags, each imprinted with dates, months, and years, represents the passage of time and the layers of environmental challenges humanity has faced. The broken, colourful fragments reflect a world in crisis, one fractured by neglect, yet still filled with memory and meaning. This piece resonates deeply with the theme of SUSTAINAISSANCE, a call for a creative and conscious revival. It reminds us that we are living in a critical moment. The future depends not only on acknowledging the damage but also on reshaping the way we live, consume, and create. Through art, awareness, and innovation, we can begin to piece together a more sustainable existence before time runs out.

Editorial: Governance as a Problem of Collective DecisionBy Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Cid, The PhilosopherGovernance, in its essence, is the art of answering an unavoidable question: how do we decide together? From tribal councils to modern corporations, from cooperatives to DAOs and artistic communities, the challenge repeats itself. And at the heart of this question lies a mechanism that is deceptively simple yet philosophically treacherous: the vote. Which voting system is the fairest? Arrow’s impossibility theorem taught us that there is no universal answer. Every context — its size, its urgency, its level of trust among participants — demands a specific institutional design. This dossier does not offer ready‑made formulas. Instead, it maps how different agents and sectors are confronting this problem. VAN Ameneyro, in their conversation with One Love DAO, shows us how governance becomes a “necessary evil” in the world of digital art. The promise of horizontality runs up against concrete questions: who gets a seat at the table? Who is still left out? The answer, for VAN, lies in transparency, real participation, and the construction of institutional memory — something fragile in the volatile environment of Web3 platforms. Fer Caggiano delivers an incisive diagnosis: power has not disappeared with decentralisation. It has merely moved — from institutions and curators to wallets and tokens. Community curation, in practice, often reproduces plutocracy. Their article forces us to ask: before voting, who defines what can be voted on? Governance begins with visibility. Steve Coulter (aka 45renegade) offers an unexpected interpretative key: punk as an operating system. Before lean startup, before bootstrapping, before the creator economy, punk already practised independent production, direct distribution, and community building as survival strategies. His text reminds us that governance is not only about formal rules and votes. It is also about ethics, refusal, and the courage to build without asking for permission. Vessy Mink appears twice in this issue, each time with a different governance experiment. In Governing the Sound, she presents Optimus Goddess, a licensing model where the artist retains full publishing rights and curation is replaced by equitable partnerships — an attempt to rewrite the rules of a historically extractive industry. In Music Train S9 E1‑6, co‑created with BK Han, she documents a live, collaborative song‑minting project. The audience does not merely listen; it participates in real‑time creation, turning musical production into a participatory governance performance. Here, the very act of making music becomes a collective decision process. Vitor Emanuel Gripp, writing from inside Token Nation, shows how a technology event can become a living laboratory for governance. By bringing together academics such as Maria Goreti (Fiocruz), Carlos Frederico (UFOP/KryptoLab) and Rodrigo Cid (UFOP/GIFLABS), Token Nation does not merely discuss decentralisation — it practises it, in the curation of its stages, the selection of its projects, and the constant negotiation between efficiency and participation. His account, grounded in his own journey from exhibiting artist to community manager, reminds us that governance is not an abstract protocol but a daily, messy, collective achievement. Rodrigo Cid, in Voting or Governing, returns to the philosophical bedrock of the problem. He reminds us that Arrow’s theorem is not a mathematical curiosity but a structural warning: no voting system is neutral. By applying this lesson to blockchain, his article demonstrates that digital governance does not escape the aporias of collective choice — it merely translates them into code. He also develops the problem of many hands and the fragility of institutional memory in decentralised systems, connecting directly with the questions raised by VAN Ameneyro and Fer Caggiano. Felipe Farinha, from the University of Saint Joseph in Macau, brings a comparative perspective. In Direct Democracy in the Age of the Extended Mind, he examines how different jurisdictions and cultural contexts shape the possibility of legitimate digital governance. His reflection on personal exocortices — AI assistants that extend a citizen’s cognitive capacity — asks whether direct democracy might finally become feasible at scale, provided we solve the problems of authenticity, manipulation, privacy, and civic deskilling. The exocortex, for Farinha, is not a substitute for democratic agency but a prosthesis for it. Daniel Gomides, from the Federal University of Ouro Preto, revisits Rousseau’s First Discourse in Scientific Progress and Moral Progress. He argues that technical sophistication does not guarantee ethical advancement. His analysis of AI, hunger, and climate agreements shows that the gap between what we can do and what we should do remains as wide as ever — a sobering reminder that governance cannot be reduced to algorithmic efficiency. Rousseau’s warning, written in 1750, still echoes today: science may teach us how to build better tools, but it does not teach us how to be better humans. Rafaela Ferrari Kley, from Degenerados Club, takes a complementary path in The Logic of Irrationality. Diagnosing a civilisation that has never been so technologically advanced yet remains emotionally manipulable, she recalls that Aristotle’s logic was a civilising attempt to contain collective hysteria. Today’s algorithms, however, are optimised for engagement, not truth. Her reflection forces us to ask whether governance can ever be purely rational, or whether it must always wrestle with the irrational architectures of attention, fear, and belonging. The question she leaves us with is disarmingly simple and profoundly uncomfortable: are we seeking to understand reality, or merely constructing emotionally bearable versions of it? Finally, this issue closes with a special launch. Rodrigo Cid’s The Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence (co‑authored with Pedro Luiz Caetano Filho) is not merely reviewed here; it is treated as a governance artifact. Its systematic collaboration with AI systems, its transparent use of the CRediT‑IA framework, and its rigorous discussion of Arrow’s theorem, opacity, bias, and responsibility provide a conceptual toolkit for exactly the questions this magazine raises. The book is available for free download (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20143966), and we invite our readers to read it alongside the articles in this issue. At the end of this volume, we hope that the reader will not find definitive answers. Instead, find a richer repertoire of questions. About who votes, about who decides what is put to a vote, about how we move from paper to action. About whether code can ever fully replace trust, and whether we would want it to. REFLECTIONS ON THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY IN THE FACE OF TECHNOLOGICAL SINGULARITY

Статья посвящена философскому анализу феномена технологической сингулярности, рассматриваемой не как технический рубеж, а как фундаментальный онтологический сдвиг в истории цивилизации. В работе критически сопоставляются модели «взрыва интеллекта» и S-образных кривых технологического роста. Особое внимание уделено трансформации человеческой субъектности (агентности) в условиях перехода к «пост-инструментальной эре». Предлагается стратегия навигации в неопределенности мира VUCA, опираясь на синтез аристотелевской этики добродетели (концепт «искусственного фронезиса»), стоицизма и логотерапии Виктора Франкла. В качестве практических механизмов сохранения демократического участия рассматриваются инновационные инструменты: децентрализованные автономные организации (DAO) и платформы делиберативной демократии. This article provides a philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of technological singularity, viewed not as a technical frontier, but as a fundamental ontological shift in the history of civilization. The paper critically compares the "intelligence explosion" and S-shaped curves of technological growth. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of human agency in the transition to a "post-instrumental era." A strategy for navigating the uncertainty of a VUCA world is proposed, drawing on a synthesis of Aristotelian virtue ethics (the concept of "artificial phronesis"), Stoicism, and Viktor Frankl's logotherapy. Innovative tools, such as decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and deliberative democracy platforms, are considered as practical mechanisms for preserving democratic participation.

Art as discourse: materiality, power structures, and the digital reconfiguration of authenticity

Abstract The evolution of art from traditional material media to contemporary digital forms reveals historically specific interconnections among discourse, reproduction, and materiality. This study traces art as a historically situated cultural practice shaped by shifting technologies, ideologies, postmodern theory, and institutional conditions. Informed by a Foucauldian account of power–knowledge, it examines how artistic meaning, visibility, cultural legitimacy, and value are organized within different historical formations. As digital technologies expand, blockchain and non-fungible tokens challenge established hierarchies by reconfiguring authenticity, originality, and ownership through mechanisms such as traceable provenance and artificial scarcity. At the same time, these developments are accompanied by new modalities of control, including platform infrastructures and algorithmic governance that influence circulation, attention, and valuation. The resulting tension between dematerialization and re-materialization highlights the ways digital art loosens its dependence on physical substrates while remaining embedded in technical, economic, and institutional arrangements. Overall, debates over the virtual and the actual, the copy and the original, continue to structure contemporary discussions of art and its changing conditions of production and value.

Can a universal digital ethics exist in a structurally unequal world? A critical theory perspective on Web3, metaverse, and the global south

The rapid expansion of blockchain infrastructures, Web3 architectures, and immersive metaverse environments has reignited calls for a Universal Code of Digital Ethics. International organizations, technology leaders, and multilateral forums increasingly advocate for global standards capable of guiding decentralized innovation toward inclusion, transparency, and social good. Yet the normative ambition of universality confronts a structural contradiction: digital access, connectivity quality, and technological literacy remain profoundly unequal across the Global South.Ethical frameworks for Web3 and the metaverse often presuppose a baseline of connectivity, computational capacity, and institutional stability that large segments of humanity do not possess. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified these asymmetries, accelerating digital transformation in high-income countries while deepening infrastructural gaps elsewhere. Concurrently, geopolitical tensions and emerging techno-nationalist strategies have repoliticized digital infrastructure as a domain of strategic competition rather than global solidarity.This Opinion article argues that any claim to a "universal" digital ethics framework is normatively fragile unless it incorporates a structural critique of global capitalism, technological acceleration, and asymmetrical power. Drawing on critical theory-particularly Herbert Marcuse's concept of the "one-dimensional man"-as well as Marxian analyses of technology and capital, I contend that ethical discourse risks becoming ideologically functional to market expansion if it fails to address material inequalities in connectivity and digital capability (Marcuse, 1972;Marx, 2005;GarcĂ­a RamĂ­rez, 2021).proposals but also problematizes the concept of universality itself as a normative and political construct.Global ethics initiatives often frame digital transformation as inherently democratizing. Blockchain is described as decentralized, Web3 as user-empowering, and the metaverse as participatory. However, decentralization at the protocol level does not necessarily translate into equitable access at the societal level.In regions of the Global South, access to stable broadband remains limited, mobile data costs are disproportionate to income, and digital literacy gaps persist. Under such conditions, the ethical vocabulary of autonomy, self-sovereign identity, and tokenized participation becomes aspirational rather than operative.Marx's analysis of technology as a force embedded within relations of production remains instructive. Technology is not neutral; it is shaped by capital accumulation dynamics (Marx, 2005). Fumikazu (1983) similarly emphasized that technological evolution must be understood historically and politically. When applied to Web3 ecosystems, this suggests that blockchain infrastructures operate within global financial logics that may reproduce, rather than dissolve, structural dependency.Contemporary Science and Technology Studies (STS) and critical philosophy of technology further reinforce this perspective. Feenberg (1999) argues that technology is not merely instrumental but socially constructed and politically conditioned, shaped by dominant interests yet open to democratic transformation. Similarly, Yuk Hui (2020) challenges the presumed universality of technological rationality, proposing the concept of "technodiversity" to account for plural technological trajectories rooted in different cultural and cosmological traditions. These perspectives suggest that any ethical framework for digital technologies must recognize the multiplicity of socio-technical realities rather than assume a homogeneous global condition.Thus, a universal code of digital ethics risks functioning as what critical theory would describe as ideological abstraction-detached from the material preconditions required for ethical agency.Herbert Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man (1972) provides a compelling lens through which to interpret contemporary digital governance. Marcuse argued that advanced industrial societies generate a form of technological rationality that integrates dissent by absorbing it into the logic of efficiency and consumption.In the context of Web3 and the metaverse, ethical discourse may become one-dimensional when it focuses on procedural compliance (privacy standards, transparency metrics, algorithmic audits) while neglecting structural exclusion. The language of inclusion becomes embedded within market expansion strategies. As Daum (2018) argues, digital capitalism increasingly converts users into capital itself-data, attention, and participation become monetizable assets.From a constructivist perspective, technologies such as blockchain are not inherently emancipatory but acquire meaning through their social embedding (Bijker, 1995). This implies that ethical claims about decentralization and empowerment must be evaluated in relation to the socio-economic contexts in which these technologies are deployed. Without such contextualization, ethical discourse risks overstating the transformative potential of technological architectures. This dynamic is particularly visible when global institutions promote digital entrepreneurship and blockchain adoption in developing regions without parallel investments in public infrastructure, education, and regulatory sovereignty. The rhetoric of empowerment may conceal asymmetric dependency.CaĂąas QuirĂłs (2023) emphasizes that ethics cannot be separated from political structures; morality detached from power analysis risks legitimizing unjust arrangements. In this sense, digital ethics frameworks must confront the political economy of connectivity rather than merely codify behavioral norms for technology developers.Digital governance is increasingly entangled with geopolitical competition. Infrastructure financing, cloud sovereignty, semiconductor supply chains, and cybersecurity alliances shape technological ecosystems. In this context, international organizations often advocate regulatory harmonization to "facilitate innovation" and "reduce market friction".While harmonization may lower barriers for cross-border digital services, it can simultaneously constrain policy autonomy in developing nations. Ethical frameworks that prioritize market efficiency risk subordinating universal connectivity goals to investor confidence and capital mobility.GarcĂ­a RamĂ­rez (2021) calls for a "Marx in the South," reinterpreting technology through the lens of rights, education, and structural inequality. From this perspective, Web3 adoption without universal broadband is analogous to building virtual property rights atop infrastructural scarcity. The promise of decentralized finance or immersive governance becomes utopian-or dystopian-when foundational digital rights remain unrealized.The acceleration principle of technological evolution -where innovation in wealthy nations compounds exponentially-renders access in peripheral regions inversely proportional to global advancement. Ethical frameworks that ignore this asymmetry may inadvertently normalize a tiered digital citizenship.The assumption that a single set of ethical principles can be universally applicable across diverse socio-cultural and technological contexts has been widely debated. From decolonial and pluralist perspectives, ethical frameworks are historically situated and epistemically conditioned (Escobar, 2018). What is considered "ethical" in one context may not translate directly into another, particularly when technological infrastructures, cultural values, and political systems differ significantly.In this sense, the concept of a Universal Code of Digital Ethics may be inherently paradoxical. Rather than a fixed and homogeneous set of principles, digital ethics may need to be understood as a plural and adaptive framework, capable of accommodating different technological ontologies and social priorities. However, without structural critique, universality risks becoming rhetorical. Critical theory reminds us that technological systems embed power relations (Marcuse, 1972). Marxian perspectives reveal how capital shapes technological deployment (Marx, 2005). Contemporary analyses from the Global South highlight the need to situate ethics within historical and geopolitical realities (GarcĂ­a RamĂ­rez, 2021;CaĂąas QuirĂłs, 2023). The ethical question is not merely how to regulate blockchain or ensure transparency in virtual worlds. It is whether digital transformation reproduces one-dimensional rationality-where market logic absorbs ethical discourse-or fosters multidimensional emancipation grounded in material equality.A truly global digital ethics must therefore begin not with code, but with conditions. Without universal connectivity and critical capacity, Web3 and the metaverse risk becoming architectures of selective participation. Ethics, to be universal, must first be infrastructural. Ethics, whether conceived as universal or plural, must first be infrastructural, contextual, and politically grounded.

Ethics: essential infrastructure for governance of Web3 and the metaverse in the age of AI

As Web3 architecture, artificial intelligence (AI), immersive environments, and connected devices converge, societies are moving from digitally mediated interaction to digitally programmed organisations, reshaping how value, labour, identity, learning, and participation are produced and governed. Programmable money, decentralised identity, AI-driven avatars, digital twins, and immersive environments illustrate how programmability collapses traditional distinctions between infrastructure, governance, and social behaviour. While these systems offer significant potential for inclusion, efficiency, and innovation, they also introduce profound ethical risks. This means that ethical challenges should become core governance elements, as code, data, and automated systems increasingly mediate trust, agency, and power at scale. Ethical failures in digital systems can scale across platforms, populations, and jurisdictions. This paper conceptualises a structural shift in which institutional rules, incentives, and governance functions are increasingly executed directly within programmable digital infrastructure, making ethics, accountability, and trust intrinsic properties of system design.

Digital Literacy: The Hallmark of Contemporary Higher Education

Abstract The need to be digitally literate becomes not only necessary, but essential especially in higher education. This chapter discusses digital literacy as a hallmark of the contemporary higher education; the chapter also explained the chronological development of Digital Literacy (DL) from traditional literacy, visual literacy, media literacy and information literacy to now modern literacy in higher education (digital literacy) which indicates the innovation and development of literacy in education. Contemporary education, academic technology and technological disruption in education were discussed. Academic technology and digital literacy inclusion strategies in higher education were also discussed. Furthermore, the chapter explained digital literacy as a component of life skill and encouraged the stakeholders in higher education such as universities management, academia and faculty members to train students and tech digital literacy as a core course in general studies in the universities and colleges as part of inclusion strategies. Other higher education technology trends to watch out include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Digital Twins, the Metaverse (including digital avatars and NFT art for use in the Metaverse and other Web3-based virtual environments), Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Cloud, Gamification, and Chatbots were all explained.

Curls, caves, and shadows: how cryptocurrencies thrive in (poly)crisis

Bitcoin, the most important and well-known cryptocurrency, was born out of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008–9. In a context of institutional mistrust, cryptocurrencies emerged as part of a larger wave of criticism toward governments and banks. Recent works in political economy and political geography have underscored the interlinkages between cryptocurrencies and crisis, wherein crypto ecosystems not only reflect price volatility, but they exploit the vulnerabilities, frictions, and tensions of global and domestic financial systems. Argentina is a notable case of the recent uptake in Bitcoin and stablecoins because of major inflationary pressures and other distortions in the economy. This article explains how cryptocurrencies are not just a response to crisis but simultaneously thrive in contexts of upheaval and distortion. Cryptocurrencies in Argentina serve as shortcuts to access US dollars and as channels to avoid government regulation through exchanges and wallets. The businesses that promote cryptocurrencies leverage arbitrage, lean toward centralisation, and succeed in alliance with traditional financial institutions. The article draws from field research in Buenos Aires and interviews with Argentina’s booming cryptocurrency business sector as well as exhaustive secondary research.

From The Sentiment Exchange to Emotional Economics 2.0

This article builds upon previous research on the ethical tokenization of emotions and the concept of a ‘Sentiment Exchange,’ advancing it into a broader normative framework termed Emotional Economics 2.0. That initial contribution demonstrated how affective signals could be measured, exchanged, and governed to ensure dignity and fairness within digital economies. The present paper extends this framework into a broader theoretical model termed Emotional Economics 2.0, articulated through three normative laws. The First Law conceptualizes human attention as a conserved and finite resource, grounding emotional value in cognitive limitations rather than artificial scarcity. The Second Law introduces emotional flow as the basis of value creation, operationalized through a dual-channel system: a fixed universal allocation of 20 tokens per day to each individual and a variable issuance tied to the measurable emotional impact of registered entities. The Third Law formulates a global emotional sovereignty contract, envisioning emotional tokens as a universal right akin to a digital basic income embedded at the protocol level. The paper further explores Scenario 4, where emotional tokens function as a universal unit of account in a post-scarcity “post-economy.” Illustrative examples—such as housing, food, and luxury goods denominated in tokens—demonstrate how this model reframes wealth, value, and redistribution. Legal challenges, governance mechanisms (Global Ethical-Scientific Committee and Decentralized Autonomous Organization), and risks of manipulation are addressed as integral to the model’s design rather than as afterthoughts. By explicitly linking the original Sentiment Exchange proposal with the Three Laws of Emotional Economics, this work positions itself as a second step in an evolving research program. Rather than a predictive claim, it advances a normative horizon: an alternative to neoliberal scarcity logics that places dignity, emotions, and collective well-being at the center of economic thought.

The Republic of Code: Algorithmic Sovereignty, Digital Personhood, and the Reconstitution of the Social Contract

Contemporary governance theory confronts a tripartite crisis that existing frameworks address only in isolation. First, algorithmic systems are systematically eroding the cognitive, affective, and epistemic conditions for individual personhood - what this paper terms the Personhood Atrophy Model. Second, recommendation-engine-driven fragmentation has dissolved the shared cultural and epistemic spaces upon which collective purpose and democratic deliberation depend. Third, the structural asymmetry between the pace of technological change and the operational tempo of democratic institutions has produced a compounding legitimacy crisis for the sovereign nation-state, increasingly outflanked by corporate platforms exercising sovereign-equivalent power without democratic accountability. Political theory and science and technology studies have addressed each of these dimensions in isolation. No integrated analytical framework currently exists that connects the micro-level erosion of selfhood, the meso-level collapse of shared meaning, and the macro-level transformation of sovereignty into a unified theory of algorithmic governance. This paper introduces the Republic of Code framework, drawing on the monograph by Shaik (2026), and proposes three original theoretical constructs: (1) the Wet Code/Dry Code distinction as a governance epistemology tool, formalizing the fundamental incompatibility between human-interpretable and machine-enforced law; (2) the Personhood Atrophy Model mapping algorithmic erosion of agency across cognitive, affective, and epistemic vectors; and (3) the Five Futures Matrix, a two-axis typology of possible political arrangements under algorithmic conditions. The paper concludes by proposing a suite of constitutional innovations - including Proof of Humanity (whose mechanism design infrastructure is formally developed in Shaik, 2026b), Zero-Knowledge Justice, and High-Fidelity Democracy - necessary for the reconstruction of democratic legitimacy in what it terms the Republic of Code. The analysis carries implications for legal scholarship, platform governance policy (including industrial cyber-physical systems, examined in Shaik, 2026e), and the updating of social contract theory for an era in which digital exit costs approach zero.

Abstract (Recent Book Presentation – AAG2026, San Francisco, California) This presentation introduces the recent book Datafied Democracies & AI Economics Unplugged , which critically examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping democracy, sovereignty, and economic systems through data infrastructures. Moving beyond techno-centric accounts, the book situates AI within political economy and innovation systems theory to interrogate how platform capitalism and data-driven governance are transforming contemporary societies into “datafied democracies.” The book develops a twofold analytical framework. First, it explores smart cities as key sites of technopolitical transformation, where AI infrastructures consolidate power in “data-opolies,” raising fundamental questions about democratic accountability and representation. While policy initiatives around “trustworthy AI” attempt to address these tensions, the analysis demonstrates that technical solutions alone are insufficient without institutional and territorial embedding. Second, the book examines the emergence of network states, algorithmic nations, and alternative forms of sovereignty in a post-Westphalian context. It critically interrogates the promises of Web3 decentralization, showing how they often reproduce new forms of concentration, including crypto-elite dominance and technocratic governance. In response, the book advances data sovereignty as a contested field—contrasting state-centric, corporate, and collective approaches—and positions data cooperatives as a pathway toward democratic data governance. The central argument is that the key challenge of AI economies lies not in technological innovation per se, but in the governance of data infrastructures and their societal implications. Drawing on global case studies, the book ultimately proposes mission-oriented and institutionally grounded innovation systems to reconnect technological development with democratic values, addressing the enduring tension between frontier innovation and social inclusion.

The Future of Web Technologies and Their Implications for the Digital Society

The development of web technology from Web 1.0 to Web 5.0 has revolutionized the way humans interact digitally, influencing identity, autonomy, employment, government, education, and culture. The modern web is now intelligent, contextual, and emotional, powered by AI, IoT, blockchain, and quantum computing. Digital identities are evolving towards decentralized models such as Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), while governance is beginning to implement Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). The world of work is changing through the gig economy and the token economy, although it comes with challenges in the form of digital divides and algorithmic manipulation. Education and cultural preservation are also digitized through adaptive learning and immersive technology. With this great opportunity also arises the issue of ethics, digital rights, and the need for inclusive and visionary policies. The web of the future must be not only smart, but also fair, ethical, and humane.

Cyberlibertarian Post-Westphalianism

This chapter positions political geography as a critical lens through which to investigate the rise of cyberlibertarian post-Westphalianism—a phenomenon shaped by Web3 infrastructures, GenAI systems, and decentralized techno-politics. Building on sustained fieldwork in Silicon Valley since August 2022 and prior research, the chapter interrogates how libertarian ideologies embedded in Web3 are reconfiguring notions of sovereignty, governance, and socioeconomic coordination. It compares three paradigmatic formations: Network States (Srinivasan), rooted in crypto-libertarianism; Network Sovereignties (De Filippi), grounded in commons-based governance; and Algorithmic Nations (Calzada), emphasizing cultural self-determination and data sovereignty. Engaging with critical voices such as Jarrad Hope and David Golumbia, the chapter reveals the ideological tensions at the core of cyberlibertarianism, particularly its propensity to reinforce elitism and obscure structural inequalities. It argues that while decentralization promises new affordances for digital citizenship, it risks consolidating power in technocratic enclaves unless governed through pluralistic and inclusive frameworks. Drawing on theories of innovation systems and AI economics, the chapter calls for hybrid governance models that prioritize solidarity, transparency, and institutional reflexivity. Ultimately, it proposes that political geography must play a central role in reimagining post-Westphalian digital orders that are democratic, accountable, and socially just.

Drawing on Calzada’s conceptual framework and action research, it investigates how algorithmic governance in smart cities displaces democratic deliberation, eroding civic trust and transparency. The chapter critically engages with Web3 technologies—blockchain, DAOs, and data cooperatives—as possible countermeasures to platform capitalism, while remaining attentive to their ideological tensions, especially the crypto-libertarian vision of “Network States” à la Srinivasan. By linking the governance of AI systems with Richard R. Nelson’s “Moon and Ghetto” metaphor, the chapter underscores a key paradox: technological innovation soars, yet foundational democratic deficits remain unresolved. Through a multidisciplinary lens, it interrogates how decentralized infrastructures might reclaim digital sovereignty and foster more equitable innovation systems. The chapter concludes by proposing a pluralistic governance model rooted in algorithmic transparency, data ethics by design, and multistakeholder engagement—critical steps toward re-democratizing the datafied city.

Data-opolies and Democratic Erosion: Emancipatory Datafication Strategies Amid Web3 Realm

This chapter critically investigates the concept of data-opolies —a term coined by Maurice Stucke to describe the monopolistic control over data by dominant tech corporations such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft (GAFAM). It explores how this concentration of data power threatens democratic resilience, distorts competition, and exacerbates socio-political inequalities. Drawing from Echeverría’s Telepolis , Cancela’s Utopías Digitales , and Lehdonvirta’s Cloud Empires , the chapter unpacks the network effects that entrench data-opolies and their capacity to manipulate user behavior, public opinion, and market dynamics. The chapter contends that these monopolistic structures erode democratic accountability and civic trust by fostering opaque algorithmic governance and undermining citizen agency. In response, it proposes emancipatory datafication strategies , including data cooperatives, algorithmic transparency, and participatory infrastructures, aimed at reclaiming democratic control over digital systems. Special attention is given to the sociopolitical implications of digital nomadism and e-diasporas as new global patterns of democratic interaction. Finally, the chapter offers a visionary assessment of Web3 technologies—blockchain, DAOs, and data cooperatives—as a potential counterweight to data-opolies. By advancing transparency and user agency, Web3 is presented as a foundation for inclusive, decentralized, and empowered digital democracies fit for the algorithmic age.

Chapter 4, “The (Dis)Illusion of the Web3 Decentralization,” interrogates the technopolitical and socioeconomic promises of decentralization amid the rise of Web3 and Generative AI (GenAI). Drawing from iterative action research, including fieldwork in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., the chapter questions whether decentralization genuinely redistributes power or merely consolidates it within a tech-savvy elite. Framed within a post-Westphalian context, it identifies three emerging paradigms—Network States, Network Sovereignties, and Algorithmic Nations—as divergent responses to this governance transformation. Engaging with the intellectual legacy of Karl Polanyi’s critique of market fundamentalism and Richard R. Nelson’s call to bridge the “moon and the ghetto,” the chapter exposes how digital infrastructures may privilege computational capital while marginalizing civic participation. Web3, often mythologized as democratizing, risks replicating algorithmic hierarchies under the guise of innovation. GenAI amplifies these risks by introducing opaque decision-making architectures governed by proprietary models and technical gatekeeping. Ultimately, this chapter urges hybrid, inclusive policy frameworks attentive to both global asymmetries and local contexts. It advances the volume’s core agenda: to critically “unplug” prevailing digital governance narratives, reinvigorate normative commitments to justice, and propose a more democratic and equitable digital transition in the era of datafied democracies and AI-driven economies.
