The Visual Ledger: Art History and the Disappearance of the Human Figure as Bearer of Ontological Weight, 1849 to 1991

This paper introduces The Visual Ledger, a diagnostic analysis of European art history between 1849 and 1991 that treats painting as an archival instrument registering the progressive evacuation of ontological weight from the human figure. Using a diagnostic history methodology, the article argues that painters detected and documented shifts in how presence, consequence, and embodiment are organised decades before these transformations consolidated institutionally. Beginning with the material density of Realism in Courbet and Repin, the analysis traces a directional transformation through Impressionism’s optical dissolution, Pointillism’s cognitive fragmentation, Art Nouveau’s decorative masking, Malevich’s honest void, and Pop Art’s operationalisation of abstraction as governance. The AIDS crisis functions as a late twentieth-century visibility stress test, exposing the limits of surface-based legibility when confronted with suffering resistant to procedural categorisation. The paper demonstrates that visual archives independently converge with literary and administrative records, showing that populations currently collapsing under procedural abstraction are experiencing the settlement of a transformation painters registered when evacuation began. This contribution is conceptual and diagnostic rather than empirical. It forms one component of the broader Equilibrium Ledger framework, which examines how institutions generate and distribute cognitive costs, and how procedural abstraction renders embodied complexity administratively legible while humanly inaccessible.

This context informs the conversations with artists and creative practitioners in this book.Often, their work with and around Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) emerges from these very concerns.Does that mean that DAOs are capable of solving the sociopolitical issues of precarity, cuts, and censorship?No. 'Free blockchain money' does not exist.DAOs do not 'magically' make more funding appear, least of all structurally so.And DAOs do not allow artists and cultural practitioners to leave behind their national contexts of austerity and repression and exchange them for some virtual utopia.However, this does not mean that engaging with DAOs is pointless in the face of these circumstances and limitations.In this publication, I ask practitioners to share their experiences, focussing specifically on the definition of new forms of agency in cultural decision-making, explorations of shared ownership in arts and culture amid widespread logics of private property and extractivism, and the making of prefigurative claims on futures envisioned from the bottom up.None of these practices will be able to replace the structures of state funding or cancel oppressive concentrations of power any time soon, but they do open up space to manoeuvre and create tactical interventions, to find each other and build solidarity, and to regain a sense of futurity together.In other words, to reimagine, reclaim, and restructure shared socio-technical futures.The six people that I interviewed represent key voices in the countercultural and artistic DAO space.Penny Rafferty is a cofounder of Black Swan -a DAO that pursued horizontal and decentralised approaches to art-making -and she pushes DAO discourse into new directions with critical and imaginative work.Erik Bordeleau is a co-founder of The Sphere -a DAO that explores new ecologies of funding to develop a regenerative commons for the performing arts -and contributes boundarypushing philosophical and media theoretical perspectives to DAO thought.Ruth Catlow developed CultureStake -a voting system for decentralised cultural decision-making that uses quadratic voting on the blockchain -and has been a central Repression of Palestinian Culture and soidarity: Independence as Resistance,' Reset! 8

NFT, arte, mercato: un'occasione mancata?

La notorietà degli NFT (non-fungible tokens) sta vivendo nell’ultimo tempo una inflessione negativa, non solo tra il pubblico specializzato ma anche fra i meno esperti, che hanno sentito parlare di queste strane “opere d’arte digitali crittografate” nel 2020, quando questo fenomeno era nella sua fase di massima ascesa. L’applicazione di questa tecnologia, resa celebre dalla diffusione (questa sì, in evidente ripresa) delle criptovalute, al mondo dell’arte digitale e del mercato che intorno a questa si è generato, risente ora delle conseguenze di questa diffusa sfiducia verso l’“arte su blockchain”. Insomma, i celebri cripto-gattini non sembrano essersela mai passata così male come ora. È forse giunto dunque il momento di una valutazione del fenomeno NFT che guardi oltre ai sensazionalismi del mercato come anche alle repentine disillusioni. In questo, gli strumenti dell’Estetica ci sembrano i più adatti a uno scopo certo pretenzioso ma necessario, considerando soprattutto che gli NFT hanno generato, che lo si voglia riconoscere o meno, una piccola rivoluzione nel mercato dell’arte. Di questo parliamo nel nostro contributo “NFT: tra esperienza estetica e nuovi mercati dell’arte”, recentemente apparso sul volume della Milano University Press a cura di Allegra Canepa Il mercato dei non fungible tokens tra arte, moda e gamification. Il contributo raccoglie prospettive diverse – appunto estetiche, ma anche sociologiche, economiche, tecnologiche, etc. – sul mondo cripto.

Digitization of art from the perspective of technological determinism and transformation of art wıth NFT: aura and elements of resistances

Dijitalleşme süreci, her disiplinde kendi teknolojik dönüşümünü oluşturmaktadır. Sanatın dönüşüm sürecinde birtakım problemler ortaya çıkmış ve bu süreçte ortaya çıkan “Taklidi Mümkün Olmayan Jeton” Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) sanat alanında; eserlerin dijital olarak sertifikalanması, eser sahipliğini sunması ve satış sürecinin takibi vb. birçok ihtiyaca çözüm niteliği olarak görülmektedir. Nitekim NFT teknolojisi, sanattan bağımsız kullanımından kaynaklı, insanlarda kavram çatışmasına, sanatçılarda fikir ayrılıklarına sebep olurken aynı zamanda direnç unsurları oluşturmuştur. Teknolojik determinizm bakış açısıyla ele alınan bu çalışma, NFT teknolojisi özelinde aura ve direnç unsurlarını çözümlemektedir. Çalışma grubu, NFT tabanlı eser üreten sanatçılarla sınırlandırılmıştır. Sanatçılarının direnç ve auraya yönelik tutumlarına ilişkin veriler, çevrimiçi anket çalışması aracılığıyla toplanmış olup istatistiki analiz programıyla analiz edilmiştir. Veriler, araştırma grubuna uygulanan yarı-yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeler ile desteklenmiştir. Çalışmada nicel ve nitel araştırma yönteminin birlikte kullanıldığı karma araştırma yöntemi seçilmiştir. Karma yöntemin sınıflandırılması “Açıklayıcı”, düzeyi “Tamamen”, zaman yönelimi “Sıralı”, vurgu yaklaşımı “Eşit statüde” belirlenmiştir. Soruların kuramsal temeli Walter Benjamin’in “Sanatın Aurası” kavramından oluşturulurken çalışmada “NFT teknolojisiyle inşa edilen dijital sanatın aurası, sanatı toplumdan uzaklaştırmaktadır” hipotezi araştırılmıştır. Analizler sonucunda, sanatçılar tarafından NFT tabanlı eserlerde aura oluşumunun ve karşılaşılan direnç unsurlarından dolayı NFT teknolojisinden uzaklaşmama eğiliminin desteklendiği saptanmıştır. Çalışmada sanatın dönüşüm sürecinde ihtiyaca çözüm olarak görülen bir aracın, sanatı dönüştürüp dönüştürmediği, direnç ve sanatçı ilişkisi, gelecek ön görüleri tespit edilmiş olup “Siber Aura” kavramı ortaya atılmıştır. Veriler, sanatın teknolojik yeniliklerde aynı veya benzer sorunlar yaşamamasına, sanatçıların dijitalleşme sürecindeki sanata bakış açılarına dikkat çekme ve yeni kavramların literatüre eklenmesi amacı taşımaktadır.

Tokenized and Tactile: Frank Stella’s Geometries (2022)

On 8 September 2022, the American artist Frank Stella launched a series of twenty-two digital art works minted as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in collaboration with Arsnl, the in-house platform by the Artist Rights Society (ARS). Titled Geometries, each “package,” included the NFT that would affirm ownership and the corresponding geometric model designed by Stella in JPG (image), MP4 (video), SLS (3D printing), GLB (virtual reality and model manipulation), and USDZ (augmented reality). This range of digital formats alludes to two of Stella’s innovations in this space: the license to remix and manipulate his models, and the ability to 3D print Geometries at any color, scale, and material. Taking Stella’s foray into the NFT-space as a starting point, my article focuses on an emergent trend by artists engaging with Web3: the effort to bridge the physical and the digital by giving tangible form to NFT artworks and what this suggests for the future of digital materiality. The paper at its core seeks to examine the relationship between the physical referents to NFTs at the very moment when new media returns to historical forms.

Creating with blockchain technology : the "provably rare" possibilities of crypto art

My thesis examines crypto art from several different vantage points. This is a budding artistic phenomenon which, can be broadly defined as art that takes place on the blockchain (also called a distributed digital ledger). Investigating this movement can aid in illuminating alternative forms of contemporary artistic practice, the direction of the blockchain, and a better understanding of cryptocurrency. Crypto art facilitates an efficient form of economic value creation for both artists and collectors, enabled by the blockchain’s capacities around tracing provenance and authenticity as well as implementing mechanisms to ensure artists receive compensation at the point of sale and resale. These outcomes would not have been possible in a pre-blockchain world. However, many of the approaches and philosophies are shared between the makers and functions of crypto art and conceptual art. Several aspects of blockchain technology are “new,” but the problems and questions that crypto art addresses, including its association with larger financial forces, have tremendous art historical precedent. Much of the modern art system is even built upon these connections, and paralleling this movement to conceptual art can help expose these affiliations. Looking at blockchain through the legacy of conceptual art also demonstrates the need for this technology and its capabilities, most notably, the built-in payment structure for artists. With this in mind, the central questions in my thesis are: how has crypto art challenged the relationship to authorship, ownership, dematerialization and distribution that were fundamental to conceptual art? And what relevance does this have for blockchain technology today? In attempting to address these questions, this paper will argue that crypto art reveals and critiques the framework of the art market. I will focus on Rare Pepes (2016-present) for my primary case study but will also survey other crypto art works to support my argument. The majority of my research engages directly with crypto art. For supplementary material, I have relied upon the work of Jason Bailey and Hito Steyerl as well as Oliver Roeder. I will also employ the writings of Lucy Lippard, Benjamin Buchloh and Joseph Kosuth to think through the theoretical side of conceptual art.

Techno-Politics as Network(ed) Struggles

Introduction At least since the NSA disclosures of 2013th &ldquo;Summer of Surveillance&rdquo;, internet surveillance and informational privacy and security have received widespread public attention and become a political concern for many. Taking the disclosures as a starting point, I follow up on this development and inquire into the techno-politics of surveillance and counter-surveillance. Instead of focusing on regulation applied to technological practices from outside, I investigate the socio-political dimensions of the internet infrastructure itself and the politics of concrete technological surveillance and counter-surveillance practices. I show how data infrastructures are not only regulated through policy, but can function as techno-political means which bring about a specific socio-technical structure. My question is: How do surveillance and counter-surveillance technologies operate as a form of techno-politics within the internet infrastructure? The answer to this question can enhance our understanding of the impact on the political landscape, which ubiquitous information technologies and their steady diffusion into every realm of our lives have. Technological infrastructures and networks are of central importance to my research, as contemporary ICTs and ICT surveillance technologies operate in and through networks rather than as single artifacts. The network, one of the 21st century&rsquo;s most prominent entities, is both a potential threat and a potential point of control. Cumbers, Routledge and Nativel argue that &ldquo;it is becoming increasingly difficult for ruling elites, usually located at the national scale, to play the gatekeeper role, through traditional territorialized hierarchies, with regard to information and communication flows across space&rdquo; (Cumbers, Routledge & Nativel, 2008, p. 188). To exercise control then requires an &ldquo;&lsquo;empire&rsquo; based upon a decentred and deterritorializing apparatus of rule that progressively incorporates the entire global realm&rdquo; (Cumbers, Routledge & Nativel, 2008, p. 185). At the same time, networks have the tendency &ldquo;to create hubs as these provide more stability and robustness. Hubs establish a kind of &lsquo;hierarchy&rsquo; within networks and this in turn gives a certain advantage to key positions of players&rsquo;&rdquo; (Cumbers, Routledge & Nativel, 2008, p. 189). In my research I explore how surveillance technologies exploit the internet&rsquo;s inherent hierarchies and operate through the global hubs that emerged within the infrastructure. Counter-surveillance technologies try to sabotage the centralized surveillance network this establishes. By using encryption technologies, they aim to make hubs dysfunctional for surveillance and to strengthen non-hierarchical network features. Consequently, the two antagonists are opposed in the way they use the network and are involved in a struggle over the network&rsquo;s very structure and technological design. Methods I base my framework on pragmatist John Dewey&rsquo;s approach to the relation between politics and infrastructures (Dewey, 1927) and extend it by analyzing the actual technological internet infrastructure. Susan Leigh Star and Geoffrey C. Bowker&rsquo;s work on infrastructures and Alexander Galloway&rsquo;s description of different network topologies to be found within the internet provide my basis for this analysis (Star & Bowker, 2006; Galloway, 2004). It builds the foundation for understanding surveillance and counter-surveillance technologies&rsquo; operation in and on the internet and its political dimensions. In Dewey&rsquo;s political thought, technological infrastructures play a major role because he held politics to be concerned with governing the channels of human interactions, of which technological infrastructures are an essential part (Dewey, 1927, p. 30). Through these channels, people can purposefully organize within society, interact through networks of communication and collaboration, and engage in joint endeavors. Technologies become the means and ends of their purpose-directed activities and signify &ldquo;the intelligent techniques by which the energies of nature and man [sic] are directed and used in satisfaction of human needs&rdquo; (Hickman, 2001, p. 8). Politics exercise indirect control over people&rsquo;s behavior through governing technological channels and regulating infrastructural systems. It is through these systems that interactions amongst society&rsquo;s members propagate and actions translate into consequences through transmission over several instances. Even though Dewey recognized their political importance, he did not analyze infrastructures in detail. According to Susan Leigh Star and Geoffrey C. Bowker, infrastructures are that &ldquo;upon which something else rides, or works&rdquo; (Star & Bowker, 2006, p. 230). As the technological structures that enable social phenomena, they are always underneath &ndash; transparent, invisible and embedded. Once in place, infrastructures only call for active investigation and attention when conditions of usability are altered and smooth use is prevented; otherwise they remain outside our awareness and active experiences. Because they organize flows of exchange within socio-technical complexes, infrastructures can be understood as the technological ordering of things. They consist of a plurality of technologies, agents and sub-networks and their actual configuration is contingent and dependent on implementation. Every configuration &ldquo;represents only one of a number of possible contributions of tasks and properties between hardware, software and people&rdquo; (Star & Bowker, 2006, p. 234). Network diagrams describe the structural features of different configurations and visualize their inherent distribution of power and control. To describe the control structures within the internet infrastructure, Alexander Galloway uses three different network types: the distributed, the decentralized and the centralized network (Galloway, 2004, pp. 11-12 & pp. 30 ff.). The centralized network is a hierarchical network in which one central host wields power over subordinate nodes. The decentralized network is then the conjunction of several centralized networks and consists of multiple hosts which rule over their sub-set of nodes. In both networks, information flows one-directionally from the host(s) to the nodes. A distributed network on the other hand does not have a hierarchical order, but every node is an equally autonomous agent and can communicate with any other node peer-to-peer. Now, when it comes to surveillance, the centralized network is easiest, since all flows must pass through the central hub. To surveil a decentralized network, multiple host need to be intercepted, because information does not accumulate in one place. In a distributed network, surveillance is most complicated. Here, in order to access every information flow within the network, all nodes (network participants) must be monitored. Figure 1. The centralized, decentralized and distributed network diagram. Results and Discussion Within the internet infrastructure&rsquo;s different technological layers, we can find both distributed and (de)centralized network topologies. On the one hand, there is what I call the internet&rsquo;s &ldquo;physical layer&rdquo;. This layer transmits actual data signals and consists of devices, cable networks, routers, servers, etc. When looking at its global constitution, we can see that this physical layer resembles a decentralized network. Across the globe, there are a number of major internet exchange points (IXPs). These are operated by internet providers like AT&T and most are located in the United States and Europe, for example in London, Frankfurt, Paris and New York (Figure 2). Nearly all internet traffic needs to pass one of them in order to get forwarded to its destination. Consequently, the IXPs build central internet hubs. Global (undersea) cable networks support this, because cables with the greatest bandwidth connect to these IXPs (TeleGeography, 2014). As it is cheapest to route through high bandwidth, data often does not take the geographically shortest path. Instead, it is linked through different high bandwidth cables across the globe and most likely across the United States. Therefore it is not surprising that NSA surveillance technologies exploit the decentralized structure of the physical layer (The Guardian, 2013). As most global hubs are are located on US soil or on the soil of US allies, the NSA can gain access to global information flows and retrieve data doubles secretly. One example for how this is done is Room 641A in AT&Ts office in San Francisco. According to former technician Mark Klein, the NSA had installed a splitter device in the office&rsquo;s internet room, which is basically an IXP (Klein, 2007). From this splitter, it directs copies of all passing internet traffic to its secret room, where the data is analyzed with latest technology. From such interception points then, the NSA feeds the data into its own network and data center. This creates a centralized shadow-network on top of the actual internet infrastructure, in which the NSA is the central hub. From this position it can monitor information flows and oversee the whole network, but peripheral network participants remain unaware. Moreover, it is potentially able to manipulate data flows, as has been the case with the program Quantumtheory (Spiegel Online, 2013). Figure 2. (see PDF version for the Figure). But there is also a reason for why we often consider the internet a distributed network. Operating &lsquo;on top&rsquo; of the physical layer, the &ldquo;protocological layer&rdquo; creates a network of equal nodes and bi-directional communication flows. In this layer, the rules are defined according to which data is wrapped and transmitted by the physical layer. The internet&rsquo;s TCP/IP Protocol Suite logically assigns equal weight to all hubs and nodes (Cowley, 2012; Galloway, 2004). According to its predefined rules, IXPs have to route data but are not allowed to wield power over information flows. The protocols&rsquo; universal rules count equally for all network participants communicating through the infrastructure. To a potential surveiller, this distributed network is a thorn in the eye, because surveilling all flows here is very complex. For this reason, counter-surveillance technologies operate on and strengthen the protocological layer. Through encrypting data flows end-to-end, they make the decentralized physical structure dysfunctional for surveillance. Data still flows through the physical infrastructure and passes global hubs, but through encryption, communication is established peer-to-peer only. If someone intercepts the hubs, they cannot get any information usable for surveillance, because they cannot read the data. The Tor network does a similar thing (Tor Project, 2014); it hooks up to the regular internet infrastructure and allows user to access the internet. But by encrypting meta-data, surveillance of internet activities becomes impossible. In this way, encryption technologies have the power to strengthen the distributed features of the protocological layer and circumvent the decentralized physical one. Conclusions The results of my analysis show how the operation of surveillance and counter-surveillance technologies exploit different socio-political dimensions inherent to the internet infrastructure. Network diagrams helped me to describe these different dimensions and demonstrate how the two antagonists are engaged in a struggle over the network&rsquo;s (dominant) structure and particular socio-technical organization. NSA surveillance technologies aim at establishing a centralized network in which the agency provides the central hub and oversees all information flows. Counter-surveillance technologies aim at establishing a distributed network where all nodes have equal rights and no one host has centralized control. This techno-political struggle is carried out within the infrastructure itself and through technological means. Within a Dewian account of politics, surveillance and counter-surveillance technologies then operate as a form of techno-politics, because they organize the channels of human interaction and strive to systematically regulate structures of interactions and communications through technologies. However, Dewey still thought infrastructures to be extrinsic to political forms. In the case of governmental internet surveillance, we now see they become intrinsic, as infrastructures are employed for political purposes. In such techno-politics, political solutions are not negotiated through public discourse but through the application and operation of technologies. The people implied in the global network are affected by these techno-politics, because they structure their interactions in the network. But when political struggles are carried out on infrastructural levels that are transparent to users by their very definition, people remain unaware of these ongoing political developments. The problem this poses to democracy is further intensified by the network&rsquo;s deterritorializing forces, which allow national agencies to access global hubs and wield power over a global public, while representing only a single nation state in whose interest they (supposedly) act. If technological solutions are provided to political problems, and if these solutions are applied on infrastructural levels that are transparent and invisible, then regular internet users and citizens are left unaware of political processes and cannot participate. Instead, it is technological elites who negotiate political decisions. Altman on Jacobs on Dior: Fashion Through Fractals and Archives

On February 25, 2011, the fashion luxury company Christian Dior suspended John Galliano, who had been its creative director since 1996, after his arrest over making anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris bar. Quickly following his suspension, a video from December 2010 was distributed showing Galliano hurling anti-Semitic invectives at several bar patrons. On March 1, 2011, Dior fired Galliano. At stake in the considerable interest and speculations regarding who takes over at Dior is control of a €24.6B business empire and access to a historic couturier’s archive. In this sense, its designer will influence the label’s "books" both financial and what will be stored in its physical repository as part of the brand’s creative and artistic repertoire. Despite fashion’s apparent ubiquity, the anticipation surrounding who takes over at Dior is proof that despite fashion’s professed democratization, there still exists a fashion hierarchy with Dior occupying its upper echelon. Since Galliano’s dismissal, fashion insiders have moved from breathlessly feverish in their speculations to desperately calling out for relief in the face of an unexpectedly drawn-out waiting game that is now over a year old and otherwise an eternity in fashion’s hyper accelerated production cycle. To purposely counter fashion’s accelerated internal clock, the purpose of this commentary is to keep fashion in a reflective state rather than a reflexive stance and uses fashion on film, and specifically Robert Altman’s Prêt-à-Porter (1994), to give cultural and historical context to all the online speculation and chatter.
