Stable arrangements persist even when they are poor ones. This corpus treats that persistence as a measurement problem, applying the apparatus of physics — potentials, first-order filters, fixed points, and effective counts — to psychological and social systems across seventy working papers (1,836,200 words) divided into four series:Series A — Foundations (6 papers): Fixes core definitions, redefining comfort as the felt total of present costs rather than pleasure, modeling life trajectories as paths through a comfort landscape governed by stationary action (δS=0), defining the reflexive loop T(x)=W(x,M(x)), and stating the contraction mapping condition.Series B — Engineering the Surplus (33 papers): Builds the core storage law as a leaky integrator, establishes the headroom gauge, and derives the interaction surplus functional f(u)=ln(1+(N−1)u).Series C — Frequency, Essence, and Mind (11 papers): Derives a minimum sustainable frequency threshold fmin=k⋅e2c/η over an essence law.Series D — Structure and Resilience (20 papers): Applies concentration instruments (1/HHI) and effective counts into jurisdictional structure, institutional holding arrangements, and distributed ledger validator metrics.
A meaningful representation in most succinct manner in social media is perhaps with profile pictures of users. These are present in every engagement on any platform alongside rival techniques such as creating posts, sending and receiving messages, viewing search results, filtering friend suggestions, integrating company interests, entrepreneurship frames, and even having interactions filtered in the form of career options and computer-generated interactions. Although their physical size is small, profile pictures are still framed as interfaces of identity, whereby the self is transformed into visible images that can be interpreted, particularly through contemporary cultural codes, current cultural practice norms, and even some social structures such as norms and values. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the current status of research on the uses of profile pictures in identity formation and to evaluate the key recommendations and lessons as well as truths revealed over the course of more than 30 research studies dedicated to the topics such as profile picture usage as an identity profile and selfie, use of visual representation in managing social media, and presentation patterns of digital self. To this end, the study seeks to address three research questions: how do profile pictures come into the build up of personal, social, cultural, professional and corporate as well as symbolical identities, what processes are there in theory and why, and which ways of investigating such complexities are the most pertinent. Imposed that the study follows the terms, a corpus-based research is carried out whereby cautiously all the elements investigated will be past and present profile picture research over here through coding broken down by year, theme, method of inquiry; platforms used and types of profiles. The spelling functions of profile pictures show that they provide for the construction of identity pronounced by a number of mechanisms. The five mechanisms of identity construction are manufactured spectacle, acted sincerity, conformity to norms, expectation of audience, and identification by representation. It also (a) is evident that profile pictures should not be viewed as a single and isolated action, for they have been waxing and waning under the impact of stereotypic practices specific to women and men, ethnic and age groups, cultures, professional areas, peer groups, which can also be adjusted by such conditions as features of the medium, technologies, and symbolic consumption of non fungible token avatars. To the field, the paragraph introduces a new identity face theory ‘profile picture as an identity interface’ and provides a plan focusing on the future of research, combining analysis of visual contents, studies of platforms, understanding of audience, pattern of computation manipulation of a picture data and extraction of identity narratives using distinct services.
FAccT issues guidelines for writing positionality statements, and in 2024, encouraged papers to include one. However, many researchers have trouble writing positionality statements that are meaningfully connected to the content of their work, particularly when the work does not directly concern a specific marginalized community. Positionality statements have also come under criticism for degrading the objectivity of science and for centering the interests of privileged authors. In this paper, we discuss three candidate views for the purpose of a positionality statement. The first view, positionality as proof of bias elimination, uses positionality statements to disclose sources of bias that prevent researchers from being neutral and objective. We argue that this is infeasible in an interdisciplinary conference like FAccT where there is disagreement over the putatively neutral epistemic norms. The second view, positionality as proof of solidarity, uses positionality statements to demonstrate trustworthiness to a marginalized group. We argue that this may be useful in certain research contexts to protect marginalized voices, but can also fragment the scientific community in a way that excuses hegemonic perspectives from accountability. We propose a third view that can be more useful for FAccT practice: that positionality statements should provide an interface for value contestation. They should stake out a critical position by defending the priors and methodological assumptions of an inquiry that are shaped by the researcher's self-endorsed social and political values. This practice can help surface epistemological and value disagreements at FAccT and enable a practice of cross-community contestation. We give four candidate guidelines for writing a positionality statement with this function: (1) ensure the statement gives deliberative reasons for decisions about framing, methodology, and the connection between data and theory, (2) open avenues for contestation that lie outside the paper's primary discipline, (3) center authors' normative and political commitments and theories of change, and (4) connect those normative and political commitments to the specific social context of the paper's audience. These four guidelines ensure that the positionality statement is related to the paper's methodology and result. Moreover, by encouraging discourse and debate between scientists who “fundamentally” disagree, it bolsters rather than degrades scientific objectivity and serves FAccT's aim of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue.
This paper introduces a systems-theoretic framework for understanding how high-coherence social structures emerge following the collapse of centralized ideological movements. Using the fragmentation of the Black Panther Party and the subsequent rise of Chicago-based organizations such as the Gangster Disciples and Black P. Stone Nation as a primary case study, the research analyzes how identity systems function as distributed governance mechanisms in high-threat environments. The paper argues that after a loss of centralized coordination capacity—accelerated in this case by external intervention such as COINTELPRO and internal organizational fragmentation—localized groups reconstruct coherence through symbolic and procedural frameworks. These identity systems, composed of geometric symbols, ritualized protocols, and codified behavioral rules (“The Literature”), act as low-cost identity verification mechanisms and enable rule-based behavioral alignment across decentralized networks. By applying a comparative systems lens, the study draws a functional analogy between these 20th-century urban dynamics and the historical nationalization of Israelite tribal identity in the ancient Near East (cf. William G. Dever). In both contexts, fragmented groups achieve large-scale coordination through the implementation of standardized identity codes, compliance signaling mechanisms (e.g., taxation/tithing), and boundary-maintaining symbolic systems. These mechanisms allow for structural persistence even in the absence of continuous centralized enforcement. The paper further develops the concept of distributed command, in which authority is embedded within the identity system itself rather than dependent on the physical presence of leadership figures such as Larry Hoover and Jeff Fort. This shift enables what is defined as Projected Threat Recursion, where adherence to system rules is maintained through internalized identity and anticipated enforcement rather than immediate coercion. To support operationalization, the study proposes a preliminary Coherence Coefficient (Cₛ) model, conceptualizing system stability as a function of alignment, response consistency, and identity strength relative to fragmentation and external distortion pressures. This model provides a foundation for analyzing resilience and failure dynamics in distributed human systems. The findings suggest that identity-mediated coordination is a persistent and scalable solution to systemic fragmentation, extending beyond historical or urban contexts. Comparable architectures are observable in decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), digital identity networks, insurgent systems, and platform-based communities. As modern systems experience increasing fragmentation, identity-based governance structures may represent a primary adaptive pathway for achieving long-term coordination and structural persistence. This work contributes to interdisciplinary discussions in systems theory, sociology, political science, and complexity studies by reframing identity not as a cultural byproduct, but as a functional infrastructure for distributed governance under constraint.
This chapter is for mathematicians, specifically number theory enthusiasts. It presents several identity schemes with which Alice and Bob, and sometimes Cathy and Denise, can prove to each other that both have a secret group key previously received from a trusted host by secure means. We need to be really sneaky; not only is the secret never revealed, but an interceptor cannot cryptanalyze it by overhearing the protocol interchange, even if overhearing the exchange many times. In the sneakiest schemes, Bob and the girls do not even know the secret group key itself; these schemes are called zero-knowledge proofs.
