Electronic Student Records on Ethereum: File Management Model and Comparative Analysis

Academic departments frequently exchange exam materials, assignment submissions, grade reports, attendance logs and durable student records. Conventional Learning Management Systems (LMS) centralize control and provide limited, non-portable audit trails which hinders cross-department collaboration and independent verification. This paper defines Electronic Student Records as encrypted, content-addressed documents anchored on Ethereum while data remain off chain and presents a practical model with a comparative analysis for department-level sharing. The model uses Sign-In with Ethereum (SIWE) for authentication, verifiable credentials for roles and consent, a minimal on-chain registry that records Keccak-256 digests, content identifiers, and timestamps with a policy reference and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) storage with institutional pinning and multiple gateways. Access control adopts proxy re-encryption, enforced with time windows and periodic key rotation. Updates always re-encrypt and re-upload so each version receives a new Content Identifier (CID) and digest. A compact evaluation contrasts Ethereum Layer 1 with Zero-Knowledge (ZK) rollups for registry events, single versus multi-gateway IPFS with two or more replicas and Proxy Re-Encryption (PRE) versus Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) as alternative keying strategies. The system reports metrics include chain cost, one-gateway (p50) and two-gateway (p95) read latency, availability under replication and revocation time under the re-upload policy. Findings indicate ZK rollups suit routine registry events, Layer1 suits high-value anchors, multi-gateway pinning improves tail latency and success rate and time-bounded PRE enables low-overhead revocation. The model offers a feasible path to privacy-preserving, auditable Electronic Student Records (ESRs) that integrate with existing LMS.

An Analysis of Patent Grants Between the Years 2015 and 2023 in Conjunction With Academic Publications to Obtain Complementary Information and Build Educator Confidence in Web3 Integration

The advent of the metaverse has sparked global interest, particularly in their potential to revolutionize various sectors, including education. This study examines the readiness of educational institutions for the transition from Web2 to Web3, focusing on the decentralized nature of the latter. It highlights the importance of analyzing both patents and academic papers to grasp the nuances of technological advancements and their implications for education. Employing a machine learning technique known as class-based TF-IDF (c-TF-IDF), the research analyzes 3317 patent grants and 4694 academic papers from 2015 to 2023. The findings reveal key technology specifications relevant to education in the Web3 era. The study adopts a four-layered approach to discuss these specifications, encompassing adaptive learning, innovative teaching methods, comprehensive evaluation, and a blend of scientific management with personalized service. The insights gained are synthesized into a proposed framework for Web3-enabled education, setting the stage for further exploration and discussion in this burgeoning field. This condensed overview serves to inform stakeholders in the education sector about the current landscape and future directions of Web3 technologies and their educational applications.

Reimagining Decentralized University Education in Africa: Toward a Scalable Framework for Industry-Linked Learning Hubs Inspired by ALU and CSA Rwanda

This study investigates how decentralized, industry-linked learning hubs can address Africa’s enduring higher education challenges of access, affordability, and employability. It proposes a scalable framework combining the African Leadership University (ALU)’s multi-city model with the Community Services Association (CSA) Rwanda’s district-based learning ecosystem. The study is guided by three research questions: RQ1: What systemic enablers support the diffusion of industry-linked university hubs in Africa? RQ2: What key barriers limit diffusion, and how do they vary across countries? RQ3: How can proven models (e.g., ALU, CSA) be adapted and costed for scale? (2)Methodology. A qualitative comparative analysis was conducted using 35 high-credibility secondary sources filtered via a PRISMA-adapted protocol from an initial 245 records (2010–2025). Four cases—ALU, CSA, Ashesi University, and UNICAF—were analyzed through the lenses of Diffusion of Innovation, Triple Helix, and Experiential Learning theory. Although the study relies exclusively on secondary sources, we applied light-touch text-mining in MAXQDA: policy documents were tokenised, stop-words removed, and coded with an unsupervised LDA algorithm (k = 6) to surface latent themes that triaged sources for qualitative comparative analysis; no clustering or association-rule modelling was undertaken. Visual tools—including causal-loop diagrams, scorecards, and a Gantt-style scale-up roadmap—supported synthesis. (3) Findings. Five core enablers emerged: policy alignment, institutional autonomy, Triple Helix linkages, diversified finance, and contextualized curricula. Barriers included regulatory rigidity, funding fragility, governance gaps, and digital divides. The proposed Pan-African Learning Hub Framework blends ALU’s experiential pedagogy with CSA’s grassroots model, enabling vertical progression from district-level cooperatives to regional research hubs. A three-year scale-up plan (USD 400–4,000 per student/year) suggests viability under flexible policy conditions. (4) Research Limitations / Implications. Secondary-data reliance constrains causal attribution and excludes francophone/North African contexts. Field validation and financial modeling are recommended for future work. (5) Practical Implications. Policymakers and institutions can use this framework to pilot scalable, employment-linked hubs without constructing new campuses. (6) Originality / Value. This is the first study to align Africa-wide policy ambitions with operational design and costing of university-linked hub models.

It begins by tracing the evolution from Web1 – a static, information-centric era – to Web2, characterized by interactive, user-generated content and the rise of social media. The chapter then introduces Web3 as a transformative leap, driven by blockchain technology, digital wallets, and decentralized applications (dApps) that empower individuals with true ownership over their digital assets and data. Real-world examples in decentralized finance, non-fungible tokens, and social networks illustrate how these innovations challenge centralization and reshape online interactions. Additionally, the discussion highlights ongoing challenges such as usability, security, and regulatory uncertainty, laying a solid foundation for understanding Web3’s revolutionary potential.

A DAOs-Based Publishing System for Advancing Open Access

The development of the scientific publishing system has remarkably enhanced global accessibility to research findings and substantially increased the visibility and dissemination of academic publications. However, significant challenges still exist in effectively safeguarding the intellectual property rights of contributors, such as the unauthorized usage of materials, the complexity of enforcing intellectual property rights across various legal jurisdictions, and high instances of plagiarism and content misuse. Additionally, financial barriers related to open access may restrict the participation of economically disadvantaged researchers, potentially biasing scientific records towards more affluent research initiatives. To address these issues, a novel decentralized framework is formulated to ensure truly open access. This framework leverages blockchain for immutable record-keeping and clear attribution of authorship, to prevent unauthorized usage and plagiarism. Besides, it also utilizes a copyright-sharing model based on decentralized autonomous organizations and operations (DAOs), where smart contracts automatically enforce copyright and access policies to ensure fair compensation for authors and researchers. Furthermore, the copyright sharing model based on non-fungible tokens (NFT) and gradual ownership optimization (GOO) mechanism is proposed to ensure fair and accurate recognition and compensation for scholarly contributions.

BC4ECO - Using Visual Tools for a Shared Understanding and Pedagogical Approach across an Interdisciplinary Consortium

Effective communication is crucial when working on complex or wicked problems in interdisciplinary, international teams. Developing a shared understanding of critical concepts and aligning knowledge, focus, and resources can be problematic when stakeholders speak different languages, span several disciplines and work within different national or industry-based norms. Using visual tools to represent critical concepts and their relations, and map out our strategic goals has greatly helped combat such issues. This paper recounts the use and impact of adopting visual tools within the transnational and interdisciplinary collaborative environment in the BC4ECO project's international consortium. The Miro Board and the canvas approach greatly helped represent, visualise, and thus concretise the structure and contents of our collaboration, which takes place within a 3 years ERASMUS+ framework that builds and delivers Summer School, MOOCS as well as teacher and multiplier events about harnessing the potential of Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) for environmental sustainability. As the materials and MOOCS are expected to become Open Education Resources and have a wide impact, it is particularly crucial to get the contents as well as the pedagogy right, in spite of the team's differences in almost any dimension of background and culture.

The Internet has revolutionized education and learning, presenting both opportunities and challenges with the continuous evolution of web-based technologies. The earlier version of the web, known as Web 1.0, was primarily a readonly medium, while Web 2.0 allowed for greater interactivity with read/write capabilities. Now, the emerging version of the web, Web 3.0, is considered to be a technologically advanced medium that not only facilitates read/write capabilities but also enables a machines to carry out some of the thinking that was previously expected only of humans. In a relatively short period of time, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 have introduced new tools and technologies that have greatly facilitated web-based education and learning. This paper will explore the definition, evolution, and characteristics of Web 3.0, as well as discuss potential future technologies, trends, tools, and services that can support online learning, personalization, and knowledge construction powered by the Semantic Web.

A Blockchain-based Educational Record Repository

The Blockchain technology was initially adopted to implement various cryptocurrencies. Currently, Blockchain is foreseen as a general purpose technology with a huge potential in many areas. Blockchain-based applications have inherent characteristics like authenticity, immutability and consensus. Beyond that, records stored on Blockchain ledger can be accessed any time and from any location. Blockchain has a great potential for managing and maintaining educational records. This paper presents a Blockchain-based Educational Record Repository (BcER2) that manages and distributes educational assets for academic and industry professionals. The BcER2 system allows educational records like e-diplomas and e-certificates to be securely and seamless transferred, shared and distributed by parties.
