Asian Mega Deltas (AMD), including the Mekong Delta, are densely populated areas, biodiverse, fertile and productive food baskets, dominated by rice, fisheries, and aquaculture that also support millions beyond the deltas. Asian Mega Deltas are the world´s most important rice-growing areas. However, delta food systems are reaching a significant tipping point. The Asian Mega Deltas are likely to be hit by serious impacts of climate change, including more frequent and more intense floods, salinization, water shortages and climate extremes that will slow down economic growth, further erode food security, and trigger new poverty traps and emerging hotspots of hunger. The AMD Initiative has five focus areas of work packages (WP) that are mechanisms to pursue specific but complementary aims: 1. Adapting Deltaic Production Systems, 2. Nutrition-Sensitive Deltaic Agri-Food Systems, 3. Innovative Financing Mechanisms to De-risk Delta Value Chains, 4. Joined-up Governance for Gender Equitable and Socially Inclusive Natural Resource Food Systems and 5. Evidence-Based Delta Development Planning. Among of these five WPs, the AMD-WP4 is worked to implement the pilot on The Innovation Model for Integrated Decentralized Food System Governance at the District Level to conduct the research and documentation on improving food system governance to support the food system decentralization processes, build the connectivity between the community fisheries (CFis), community fish refuge (CFR), the irrigation system, and rice farming as an integrated food production system through improving water governance, promote the collaboration between the CFis, CFR and farmer water user communities (FWUC), community ecotourism and other relevant stakeholders to work together to manage the fishery, water, rice farming, and irrigation management based on collective approaches and interests to produce foods and support the livelihoods of local communities, promote the role district administration and Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Office and build the capacity of local communities.
This article seeks to review and identify potential sources of funds for implementation of planned activities within a fisheries co-management arrangement in the southern Lake Malawi, Mangochi District. In this review, we use secondary sources on fisheries co-management at both national and international levels. With adoption of the co-management or participatory fisheries management as it is alternatively called in Malawi, consideration of sustainable financing mechanisms is essential for implementation of planned activities by the local fisheries management authorities and beach village committees within a decentralization framework. Potential revenue sources include development of a fisheries fund and establishment of a benefit sharing mechanism with reference to a district user fee. Other sources include fees charged for conducting fisheries research on the lake, membership fee for joining beach village committees, levies on fish marketing and fees charged for use of facilities especially jetties, store rooms and fish processing facilities on a beach. The revenue collection is recommended as one of the incentives for co-management partners to ensure implementation of activities like law enforcement, licensing, training, community outreach services and research. We recommend that the legal provisions on the establishment of a fisheries fund and revenue sharing be implemented to ensure availability of funds for the fisheries sector. In addition, the existing by-laws with outlined financing mechanisms should be approved by the appropriate authorities.
This study was carried out to examine marketing of dried fish in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study used a combination of information discussions and questionnaires to collect data from 70 dried fish marketers in 2012. Data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and Gini coefficient analysis. The study revealed that dried fish marketing was dominated by active literate population that were most females and majority of the marketers finance their business through personal savings. Dried fish marketing channel in the study area was both centralized and decentralized. The profitability analysis suggests that dried fish marketing is a profitable venture in the study area. However, the marketing system was not efficient, indicating that the necessary marketing functions were not properly performed. Therefore, Government policies should be directed towards reducing labour cost, transportation charges, fish lost as waste and provision of credit by banks for the traders to expand their business.Key words: Dried fish, marketing, profitability analysis, marketing channel.
s - This study investigated the causal relationship between quantity of fish sold and marketing costs in Adamawa State. Specifically, the profitability was determined and distribution channels identified. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from 80 fish marketers using purposive and simple random sampling technique from Jimeta, Yola, Gurin and Labondo markets. Analytical tools used were descriptive statistics, market margin and multiple regression analysis. The result showed a margin of 39.8% which could be attributed to the marketing functions. The study identified a decentralized distribution channel in the area. Regression analysis revealed an R2 of 63.8%, F-value of 8.93 and a very low standard error of 0.38889. The result further revealed that initial capital, cost of fish, processing cost and handling charges were positive and significant at different levels indicating that they were the major determinants of selling prices of processed fish in the area. The study concluded that processed fish marketing in the study area was profitable. It recommended that marketers should form a strong co-operative society. There is also a need for government intervention by reducing tax and providing licence to increase the number of micro-credit finance institutions.
