Towards a Generic NFT-Driven Digital Twin Simulation Platform

A new approach to asset management and traceability emerges upon the integration of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and Digital Twin (DT) technology. While NFTs are widely used in digital art and gaming, their potential for securing real-world assets in DT simulations remains under-explored. A generic NFT-driven DT simulation platform could transform asset management by enhancing traceability, optimizing operations, and fostering sustainability within and across industries. In livestock management, DTs can model individual animals in real time, capturing data on health and growth. Linking this data to NFTs ensures ownership and provenance, improving traceability and accountability. Similarly, in manufacturing, DTs can identify inefficiencies, reducing waste and energy use. It is pressing to improve decision-making and operational efficiencies throughout distinct contexts. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA. The goal was to build a solid, unbiased foundation for our research, contribute lasting value to the community, and identify where our work can make the most impact. From an initial set of 114 papers, the authors screened and classified the most relevant. This led to a final selection of 8 papers for full-text reading and in-depth analysis. They are presented in detail and compared in order to depict the current state of the art in the field. Results reveal a significant gap concerning the topic, particularly highlighting the absence of simulation environments that align with the previous proposal presented by the authors: a comprehensive NFT-driven and DT simulation platform that transforms NFT-based asset management from static ownership records to dynamic, provides simulation operational tools, enables real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance optimization for real-world assets.

A Blockchain-Based G-Code Protection Approach for Cyber-Physical Security in Additive Manufacturing

Abstract As an emerging technology, additive manufacturing (AM) is able to fabricate products with complex geometries using various materials. In particular, cyber-enabled AM systems have recently become widely applied in many real-world applications. It significantly improves the flexibility and productivity of AM but poses the system under high risks of cyber-physical attacks. For example, cyber-physical attack could maliciously tamper the product design and process parameters, which, in turn, leads to significant alteration of the desired properties in AM products. Therefore, there is an urgent need in incorporating advanced technologies to improve the cyber-physical security for the cyber-enabled AM systems. In this study, two common types of cyber-physical attacks regarding the G-code security were investigated, namely, unintended design modifications and intellectual property theft. To effectively secure the G-code against these two attacks, a new methodology is developed in this study, which consists of a novel blockchain-based data storage approach and an effective asymmetry encryption technique. The proposed method was also applied to a real-world AM case for ensuring the cyber-physical security of the face shield fabrication, which is critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the proposed methodology, malicious tampering can be accurately detected in time, and meanwhile, the risk of unauthorized access of the G-code file is greatly eliminated as well.

A framework for personalized production based on digital twin, blockchain and additive manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0

The booming customized and personalized demands call for new production paradigms that complies with that change. The ubiquitous connection, digitization and sharing in the context of Industry 4.0 present an opportunity for next-generation production paradigm-personalized production, to meet the booming personalized demands with individual needs and preferences. Personalized production refers to a customer-centric production paradigm, where individual needs and preferences are transformed into personalized products and services at an affordable cost, by maximizing the benefit of connection and sharing throughout the product life-cycle. This paper reviews and identifies the evolution of production paradigms. A framework for personalized production based on digital twin, blockchain and additive manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0 is proposed. Besides, the impact of the implementation of personalized production is discussed from the aspects of customer-centric business model, social and environmental effects and challenges of data ownership. This paper provides helpful guidance and reference for personalized production paradigm.
