Multi-chain Storage Scheme Based on Hash Calendar and Recursive Zero-knowledge Proof

Chao Wang, Zhongyuan Yao, Yong Zhang, Shangkun Guo · 6 authors

Blockchain technology is currently a research hotspot in the computer field. However, with the rapid development of blockchain technology, poor storage scalability limits its further application. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a multi-chain storage scheme based on hash calendar and recursive zero-knowledge proof, which consists of two parts: off-chain and on-chain. The off-chain part uses hash calendar technology to store account information, and through recursive zero-knowledge proof of account state transitions, ensures the verifiability of off-chain state transitions and improves the security of the solution; and sets up proof generators and transactions The two roles of the executor improve the efficiency of transaction execution. A dynamically addable main and sub-chain array is designed on the chain. The sub-chains store the brief information of transactions and the world state. The main chain is responsible for verifying the correctness of off-chain state transitions. On-chain and off-chain collaborative storage reduces the space occupied by data., to realize the storage expansion of the blockchain. Finally, simulation experiments show that this scheme can effectively realize the storage expansion of blockchain.

A Distributed Ledger Technology Design using Hyperledger Fabric and a Clinical Trial Use Case

D. Richard Kuhn, Joshua Roberts, David Ferraiolo, Joanna F. DeFranco

Industry continues to be challenged when attempting to share data among organizations, especially when the data comes from different database management systems (DBMS) and different DBMS schemas. Another concern is that privacy laws may require some types of data to be protected under local access policies. We describe a secure data sharing solution using Next-generation Database Access Control (NDAC) and the Data Block Matrix (DBM). A clinical trial data use case is discussed, as well as a description of a proof-of-concept implementation of the DBM using Hyperledger Fabric. The solution described allows data access where the data resides, rather than exchanging or being centrally stored. Additionally, it solves the conflict between conventional blockchain use and privacy regulations, by using a form of distributed ledger technology that meets ‘right to erasure’ requirements.

Indy528 — Federated Learning Model Tokenization with Non-Fungible Tokens(NFT) and Model Cards

Eranga Bandara, Xueping Liang, Sachin Shetty, Ravi Mukkamala · 6 authors

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are used to represent ownership of unique items. The tokens provide means to validate integrity. That is, the item is unique and cannot be replaced with something else. NFTs are securely stored in the blockchain-based decentralized storage in the format of ERC721 tokens, so it is technically difficult to modify the record of ownership or duplicate a new NFT token. Currently, NFTs are used to tokenise objects such as arts, collectables, and even real estate. In this research, we propose an open platform “Indy528” and utilize NFT tokens to represent federated machine learning (FML) models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first research that tries to represent machine learning models as NFTs. Different peers in the blockchain network can build FML models using a blockchain-enabled coordinator-less FML system. The data provenance information of the FML models, which records the model data changes from the origin, is recorded as Model Cards. The FML model ownership, storage locations of the FML models and data provenance information(with Model Cards) are encoded into NFT tokens and stored in the decentralized ledger. We design a novel NFT token schema i528 (which is an extension of ERC721) to represent machine learning models as NFTs. As a use-case of Indy528, we propose a concept of the NFT-based decentralized FML model marketplace. Model creators can train the FML models and publish them in the marketplace as NFTs. Parties who want to use the models can buy them from the model creators as NFTs. The buyers can view model information, accuracy, training process etc via the model card objects stored with the NFT. This design methodology provides enhanced transparency and auditability to the federated learning process while providing an open platform to share and trade machine learning models in the marketplace.

Simulation of the Lightweight Blockchain Technique Based on Privacy and Security for Healthcare Data for the Cloud System

Preeti Rani, Sonia Verma, Satya Prakash Yadav, Bipin Kumar · 6 authors

Information about healthcare is derived from healthcare data. Healthcare data sharing helps make healthcare systems more efficient as well as improving healthcare quality. Patients should own and control healthcare information, one of their most valuable assets, instead of letting data be spread out among health care providers differ. This protects data from being shared between healthcare systems and privacy. Public ledger accompanied by a decentralized network of peer's compromises patient has been demonstrated to be able to achieve trusted, auditable computing by blockchain. The use of access control and cryptographic primitives are insufficient in addressing modern cyber threats all privacy and security concerns associated with a cloud-based environment. In this paper, the authors proposed a lightweight blockchain technique based on privacy and security for healthcare data for the cloud system. The cost-effectiveness of our system's smart contracts is evaluated, as well as the procedures used for data processing in order to encrypt and pseudonymize patient data.

Reval Prabhu Puneeth, G Parthasarathy

Blockchain is regarded as a significant innovation and shows a set of promising features that can certainly address existing issues in real time applications. Decentralization, greater transparency, improved traceability and secure architecture can revolutionize healthcare systems. With the help of advancement in computer technologies, most healthcare institutions try to store patient data digitally rather than on paper. Electronic health records are regarded as some of the most important assets in healthcare system and are required to be shared among different hospitals and other organizations to improve diagnosis efficiency. While sharing patients' details, certain basic standards such as integrity and confidentiality of the information need to be considered. Blockchain technology provides the above standards with features of immutability and granting access to stored information only to authorized users. The examination approach depends on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (or PRISMA) rules and an efficient planned search convention is utilized to look through multiple scientific databases to recognize, investigate and separate every important publication. In this paper, we present a solid systematic review on the blockchain and healthcare domain to identify the existing challenges and benefits of applying blockchain technology in healthcare systems. More than 150 scientific papers published in the last ten years are surveyed, resulting in the identifications and summarization of observations made on the different privacy-preserving approaches and also assessment of their performances. We also present a significant architectural solutions of blockchain to achieve interoperability. Thereby, we attempt to analyse the ideas of blockchain in the medical domain, by assessing the advantages and limitations, subsequently giving guidance to other researchers in the area.

Secure Access Control Realization Based on Self-Sovereign Identity for Cloud CDM

Yunhee Kang, Young B. Park

Public healthcare has transformed from treatment to preventive care and disease management. The Common Data Model (CDM) provides a standard data structure defined to utilize hospitals’ data. Digital identity takes a significant role as the body of information about an individual used by computer systems to identify and establish trust among organizations. The CDM research network, composed of users handling medical information, has several digital identities associated with their activity. A high central authority cost can be reduced by Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). It enables users to control their identities independently of a third party. To preserve the privacy of researchers in clinical studies, secure identification is the main concern of identifying the researcher and its agents. To do so, they should pose a legally verifiable credential in the cloud CDM. By presenting the proof represented by the capability that the user has, each identity has access control that is linked to an authentication credential that the cloud CDM can verify. Assurance in one’s identity is confirmed by asserting claims with the identity and its capability, providing its verifiable credential to the authentication entity in the cloud CDM. This paper describes the user-centric claim-based identity operation model based on use cases to handle researcher identity in the cloud CDM. In this model, credentials are designed as a capability and presented to them to access SPs in the cloud CDM. To provide well-controlled access control in the cloud CDM, we build and prototype a capability based CDM management system.

OpenDSU: Digital Sovereignty in PharmaLedger

Michael Sammeth, Nicu-Cosmin Ursache, Sînică Alboaie

Introduction: Distributed ledger networks, chiefly those based on blockchain technologies, currently are heralding a next-generation of computer systems that aims to suit modern users’ demands. Over the recent years, several technologies for blockchains, off-chaining strategies, as well as decentralised and respectively self-sovereign identity systems have shot up so fast that standardisation of the protocols is lagging behind, severely hampering the interoperability of different approaches. Moreover, most of the currently available solutions for distributed ledgers focus on either home users or enterprise use case scenarios, failing to provide integrative solutions addressing the needs of both. Methods: Herein, we introduce the OpenDSU platform that allows to interoperate generic blockchain technologies, organised–and possibly cascaded in a hierarchical fashion–in domains. To achieve this flexibility, we seamlessly integrated a set of well conceived components that orchestrate off-chain data and provide granularly resolved and cryptographically secure access levels, intrinsically nested with sovereign identities across the different domains. The source code and extensive documentation of all OpenDSU components described herein are publicly available under the MIT open-source licence at https://opendsu.com . Results: Employing our platform to PharmaLedger, an inter-European network for the standardisation of data handling in the pharmaceutical industry and in healthcare, we demonstrate that OpenDSU can cope with generic demands of heterogeneous use cases in both, performance and handling substantially different business policies. Discussion: Importantly, whereas available solutions commonly require a pre-defined and fixed set of components, no such vendor lock-in restrictions on the blockchain technology or identity system exist in OpenDSU, making systems built on it flexibly adaptable to new standards evolving in the future.

Design and Implementation of Blockchain-based College Education Integrity System

Shenglong Lin, Zhigang Li, Shuai Zhao, Heshan Zhao · 6 authors

The paper firstly takes the requirements of the college education integrity system (CEIS) issued by the local education authority as the research object, proposes a restricted blockchain model with auditing and its consensus algorithm, and then proposes two improved MPT tree search algorithms to improve the search efficiency. Finally, the system adopts the Ethereum blockchain for system design, implementation and verification. The system is deployed in the NodeJS, with the Truffle framework to configure and write smart contracts to create decentralized DApp. The front-end is built with LAYUI, and the back-end is written in Solidity for smart contracts. MongoDB and Redis are used for data interaction with DApp. Ganache is used to build an Ethereum simulation network for system testing and realize the application and transfer of Ethereum in units of accounts. The blockchain-based college integrity system can solve the problems of high cost, low efficiency and data reliability risks in centralized systems.

Incentive EMR Sharing System Based on Consortium Blockchain and IPFS

Wanbing Zhan, Chin‐Ling Chen, Wei Weng, Woei-Jiunn Tsaur · 6 authors

Electronic medical records (EMRs) are extremely private data in the medical industry. Clinicians use the patient data that the EMR stores to quickly assess a patient's status and save diagnostic information. In the conventional medical model, it is easy for duplicate exams, medical resource waste, or the loss of medical records to happen when a patient is transferred between several medical facilities due to problems with data sharing and exchange, inadequate data privacy, security, confidentiality, and difficulties with data traceability. This paper recommends a Hyperledger Fabric-based strategy to promote the exchange of EMR models. With the use of Hyperledger Fabric, EMR stakeholders can be brought into the channel to facilitate data sharing. Attribute-based access control (ABAC) allows users to design the data access control policy, and the data access control may improve security. Any record stored in the blockchain can be viewed using the Hyperledger Fabric feature and it cannot be altered or destroyed, ensuring data traceability. Through proxy re-encryption, which makes sure that the data is not leaked during data exchange, data secrecy can be ensured. A module for medical tokens has now been added. Many foreign medical institutions currently use the medical token system, and the system described in this paper can use the tokens to pay for some medical expenses. The tokens are obtained by the patient's initiative to share their EMR with the medical institution for research, which is how many foreign medical institutions currently use the medical token mechanism. This paradigm can encourage the growth of medical data by enabling stakeholders to collaborate and share EMR trust.

Ethereum Blockchain-Based Authentication Approach for Data Sharing in Cloud Storage Model

Geethu Mary George, L. S. Jayashree

The development of the cloud plays a wide role in commencing secured communication among users. However, privacy and managing large databases is a major problem in a cloud model. This affects the data sharing due to a lack of trust amongst the stakeholders. Thus, we proposed a new blockchain-assisted authentication and access control technique to provide reliable data integrity verification between the cloud owners and the requester without relying on end-users. The proposed blockchain-based authentication and access control mechanism effectively increases the throughput and reduces the cost by addressing the issues of failure in the cloud model. This method integrates the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) and Ethereum blockchain for sharing the data effectively between the cloud owner and the requester. This framework distributes the secret key to the requester and the data is encrypted by adapting data policies to attain access controls over data. The keyword search function on ciphertext is executed on the basis of smart contract and Ethereum blockchain. The proposed Blockchain-based access control and authentication mechanism obtained better results with a genuine user detection rate of 95%, maximum search accuracy of 95%, and minimum responsiveness of 2.25 sec for 500 Blockchain size.

L2DART: A Trust Management System Integrating Blockchain and Off-Chain Computation

Andrea De Salve, Luca Franceschi, Andrea Lisi, Paolo Mori · 5 authors

The blockchain technology has been gaining an increasing popularity for the last years, and smart contracts are being used for a growing number of applications in several scenarios. The execution of smart contracts on public blockchains can be invoked by any user with a transaction, although in many scenarios there would be the need for restricting the right of executing smart contracts only to a restricted set of users. To help deal with this issue, this article proposes a system based on a popular access control framework called RT, Role-based Trust Management, to regulate smart contracts execution rights. The proposed system, called Layer 2 DecentrAlized Role-based Trust management (L2DART), implements the RT framework on a public blockchain, and it is designed as a layer-2 technology that involves both on-chain and off-chain functionalities to reduce the blockchain costs while keeping blockchain auditability, i.e., immutability and transparency. The on-chain costs of L2DART have been evaluated on Ethereum and compared with a previous solution implementing on-chain all the functionalities. The results show that the on-chain costs of L2DART are relatively low, making the system deployable in real-world scenarios.

Proofs of Proof-of-Stake with Sublinear Complexity

Shresth Agrawal, Joachim Neu, Ertem Nusret Tas, Dionysis Zindros

Popular Ethereum wallets (like MetaMask) entrust centralized infrastructure providers (e.g., Infura) to run the consensus client logic on their behalf. As a result, these wallets are light-weight and high-performant, but come with security risks. A malicious provider can mislead the wallet by faking payments and balances, or censoring transactions. On the other hand, light clients, which are not in popular use today, allow decentralization, but are concretely inefficient, often with asymptotically linear bootstrapping complexity. This poses a dilemma between decentralization and performance. We design, implement, and evaluate a new proof-of-stake (PoS) superlight client with concretely efficient and asymptotically logarithmic bootstrapping complexity. Our proofs of proof-of-stake (PoPoS) take the form of a Merkle tree of PoS epochs. The verifier enrolls the provers in a bisection game, in which honest provers are destined to win once an adversarial Merkle tree is challenged at sufficient depth. We provide an implementation for mainnet Ethereum: compared to the state-of-the-art light client construction of Ethereum, our client improves time-to-completion by 9x, communication by 180x, and energy usage by 30x (when bootstrapping after 10 years of consensus execution). As an important additional application, our construction can be used to realize trustless cross-chain bridges, in which the superlight client runs within a smart contract and takes the role of an on-chain verifier. We prove our construction is secure and show how to employ it for other PoS systems such as Cardano (with fully adaptive adversary), Algorand, and Snow White.

Fair Cloud Auditing Based on Blockchain for Resource-Constrained IoT Devices

Lei Zhou, Anmin Fu, Guomin Yang, Yansong Gao · 6 authors

Internet of Things (IoT) devices upload their data into the cloud for storage because of their limited resources. However, cloud storage data has been subject to potential integrity threats, and consequently auditing techniques are demanded to ensure the integrity of stored data. Unfortunately, existing auditing approaches require owners to undertake expensive tag calculations, which is unsuitable for resource-constrained IoT devices. To resolve the issue, we present aFairCloudAuditing proposal by employing theBlockchain (FCAB). We combine certificateless signatures with the designed dynamic structure to constructively offload the cost of tag computation from the IoT device to the introduced fog node, significantly reducing the local burden. Considering that fog nodes may behave dishonestly during auditing, FCAB enables the IoT device to verify the audit result's authenticity by extracting reliable checking records from the blockchain, thereby achieving auditing fairness, which ensures that thehonestcloud and fog node will gain the corresponding reward. Finally, FCAB is proved to satisfy tag unforgeability, proof unforgeability, privacy preserving, and auditing fairness. Experiment evaluations affirm that FCAB is computationally and communicationally efficient and retains a smaller and fixed computation locally at the data processing stage (mainly including tag computation) than existing auditing methods.

APPREHENSIONS WITH CRYPTOCURRENCY IN INDIA

Samaira Tomer

The growth in information and communication technology has led to phenomenons in the financial sector as well. This primarily alludes to the introduction of cryptocurrencies, a decentralised medium of exchange, which provides an alternative to the centuries-old idea of physical money. There is a visible relationship between the principles of behavioural finance and the value/returns that these cryptocurrencies have. These currencies are not dependent on the behaviour of the financial markets and economy but instead on the supply and demand of the currency along with its popularity which is dependent purely on the individuals.

An Effective Security Comparison Protocol in Cloud Computing

Yuling Chen, Junhong Tao, Tao Li, Jiangyuan Cai · 5 authors

Abstract Secure comparison protocol is an important branch of secure multi-party computation(SMPC), which compares the size of input data without disclosing any information between participants. The development of cloud computing provides an application platform for SMPC, but it also brings new challenges. In cloud computing with SMPC, clients need to process their own data and submit the processed data to a cloud server, which then performs the computation. In this process, not only the clients need to maintain an honest state at all times, but sensitive data on the cloud server side may also be exposed. In this paper, zero-knowledge proof and homomorphic encryption techniques are used to improve Damgård-Geisler-KrØigaard(DGK) comparison protocol. The improved secure comparison protocol can not only safely calculate private data, but also be applicable to malicious participant model. Finally, the security analysis shows that the proposed scheme not only ensures the privacy security of participants, but also ensures the data fairness of comparison protocols.

Implementation of Blockchain based Electronic Health Record System using Java Eclipse and MongoDB

Mehar Nasreen, Sunil Kumar Singh

With the advancement in technologies, Healthcare systems are facing different issues and challenges. Increase in population, increases the health issues. Large amount of health data is being generated and to store these data, centralized EHRs (Electronic Health Records) are used, due to which the problem of data security and privacy also increases. To overcome this situation, a distributed-ledger technology (DLT), Blockchain is developed. Its far-reaching potential has stretched its capabilities beyond the initial goal and impacted a wide range of fields. Blockchain can innovate community-based healthcare models. It stores the data in distributed database and uses the concept of cryptography for security. This paper stores the EHRs in Blockchain and for its implementation, Java programming language is used. EHRs are accessed from MongoDB and stored in the Blockchain. Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism is applied, to provide security to the health data.

A blockchain framework data integrity enhanced recommender system

May Altulyan, Lina Yao, Salil S. Kanhere, Chaoran Huang

Abstract Recommender system for the IoT (RSIoT) has attracted considerable attention. By leveraging emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and blockchain, RSIoT improves various indicators of residents' life. However, data integrity threats may affect the accuracy and consistency of the data particularly in the IoT environment where most devices are inherently dynamic and have limited resources that could fail in ensuring the quality of data transmission. Prior work has focused on processing big data and ensuring their integrity by considering cloud storage service as the popular way. In this article, we address integrity of data leveraging blockchain capabilities to ensure the integrity of the critical data. We adapted the Ethereum blockchain to our RCS for ensuring integrity of data during sharing them between doctor and patient without handling their data by third party. We build four smart contracts that enable our system of gaining more advantage of blockchain. We evaluated the performance of our smart contracts in Kovan and Rinkeby test networks. The preliminary results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solution.

A multi-chain synchronization protocol that leverage zero knowledge proof to minimize communication trust base

Sinka Gao, Guo Qiang Li, Hong Fei Fu, Heng Zhang

Delphinus cross-chain aggregator is a universal firmware which synchronise states between different smart contracts on different block-chains. In the world of block-chains, synchronization challenges are two-folded. Firstly, contracts from different main block-chain can not communicate with each other which makes it hard to establish a trustworthy communication channel for them to share and maintain a universal state between each other. Secondly, transactions on different block-chains can hardly be ordered thus conflicts are common and we need a novel way to avoid and handle these conflicts. Delphinus cross-chain aggregator is a ZKSNARK based multi-block-chain layer on top of which rich cross chain applications can run safely and efficiently.

A Secure and Traceable Vehicles and Parts System Based on Blockchain and Smart Contract

Chin‐Ling Chen, Zhipeng Zhu, Ming Zhou, Woei-Jiunn Tsaur · 6 authors

As society advances, so does the total number of vehicles on the road, creating a massive consumer market for automobiles. According to statistics, a major portion of today's traffic difficulties are caused by accidents caused by subpar cars and auto parts. As a result, each country has, over time, enacted equivalent rules and regulations to prevent such tragedies. However, in the face of profit, some people are desperate enough to employ illegal parts and illegally modified cars, and auto fraud is rampant. As a result, we employ the blockchain of the symmetrical Blockchain's digital ledger and smart contract technology to build a decentralized supply chain system that can identify specific parts. In this study, we design and discuss the proposed system framework by user functions and the flow of parts based on blockchain, and we discuss communication protocols that use the symmetry and asymmetry cryptography, algorithms, properties, and security of the mechanism while providing related analysis and comparing the properties and costs of the system with other studies. Overall, the proposed method has the potential to successfully address the issue of automobile fraud.

Authentication, Authorization, and Selective Disclosure for IoT Data Sharing Using Verifiable Credentials and Zero-Knowledge Proofs

Nikos Fotiou, Iakovos Pittaras, Spiros Chadoulos, Vasilios A. Siris · 7 authors

As IoT becomes omnipresent vast amounts of data are generated, which can be used for building innovative applications. However, interoperability issues and security concerns, prevent harvesting the full potentials of these data. In this paper we consider the use case of data generated by smart buildings. Buildings are becoming ever "smarter" by integrating IoT devices that improve comfort through sensing and automation. However, these devices and their data are usually siloed in specific applications or manufacturers, even though they can be valuable for various interested stakeholders who provide different types of "over the top" services, e.g., energy management. Most data sharing techniques follow an "all or nothing" approach, creating significant security and privacy threats, when even partially revealed, privacy-preserving, data subsets can fuel innovative applications. With these in mind we develop a platform that enables controlled, privacy-preserving sharing of data items. Our system innovates in two directions: Firstly, it provides a framework for allowing discovery and selective disclosure of IoT data without violating their integrity. Secondly, it provides a user-friendly, intuitive mechanisms allowing efficient, fine-grained access control over the shared data. Our solution leverages recent advances in the areas of Self-Sovereign Identities, Verifiable Credentials, and Zero-Knowledge Proofs, and it integrates them in a platform that combines the industry-standard authorization framework OAuth 2.0 and the Web of Things specifications.
