Blockchain adoption at German logistics service providers

Oliver Kühn, Axel Jacob, Michael Schüller

Purpose: The study provides a recent overview of the diffusion of blockchain technology in the logistics industry. It reveals the adoption of blockchain technology at German logistics service providers (LSPs) and their expectations regarding the future relevance of the technology. Based on the TOE Framework adoption supporting and inhibiting factors are identified. Methodology: In a first step, LSPs listed in the “Die Top 100 der Logistik 2016/2017” were contacted and questioned about their blockchain activities. Based on the responses, qualitative interviews were conducted with seven participants as part of a three-stage Delphi study. Findings: In particular small and medium-sized German LSPs are currently hardly involved in blockchain technology. Larger LSPs are beginning to define their own use cases and are trying to develop them further in joint projects with partners. A systematic use is currently not taking place. Originality: The study reveals the current discrepancy between rapidly evolving theoretical approaches for the use of blockchain technology in logistics, on the one hand, and the absence of the technology in everyday operations on the other hand. It also reveals a reluctant attitude of the management towards the technology.

Smart Contracts verändern den Weltgebrauchtwagenmarkt

Pit Heimes, Jan Hicking

Sending Transactions

Santiago Palladino

After reviewing in the previous chapter how to read data and monitor changes on the network, we will now go into how to write this data by sending transactions. We will start by setting up a development environment for easily playing with smart contracts, then move into a web3-enabled context, and finally go into the details of issuing transactions and monitoring their lifecycle. Once again, we will wrap up with a sample application that puts all the learnings of the chapter together.

User Onboarding

Santiago Palladino

The complex user onboarding experience is one of the main issues for achieving mass adoption in Ethereum. Users new to the space need to install a dedicated browser or extension, create and back up an account, and then acquire ETH just to begin interacting with a DApp. While in previous chapters we have worked with web3-enabled users, in this chapter we will look into ways for simplifying the onboarding experience for new ones.

Using the web3.js APIs

Wei-Meng Lee

In the previous chapters, you have learned the basics of Smart Contracts and how to deploy them onto the blockchain. So far, all interactions with the Smart Contracts have been through the Remix IDE. While the Remix IDE provides an easy way for developers to test their Smart Contracts, it is not suitable for use by end users. To allow end users to interact with your Smart Contracts, you need to build front end that hides the complexity of interacting with the Smart Contracts in the back end. For this purpose, you need an API.

Faster switching of energy suppliers – a blockchain-based approach

Michael Hinterstocker, Florian Haberkorn, Andreas Zeiselmair, Serafin von Roon

Only a small share of German households make use of the opportunity to regularly switch their electricity supplier in order to fulfill their needs. Besides the relatively low possible monetary savings, another reason is the fact of long running contracts. The process of supplier switching for stakeholders in the energy market is quite time-consuming. This is caused by inefficient design of the process steps due to a lack of automation, of common data management and of direct communication between these stakeholders. Two options for optimizing this by means of a blockchain-based system are described and discussed here. These allow simplified communication between participating parties and therefore potentially quicker completion of the process. They enable automation of the whole process, prevent delays due to inconsistent data and therefore, allow intraday switching. An exemplary proof-of-concept implementation on the Ethereum blockchain shows the feasibility of the approach. Nevertheless, the advantages and disadvantages when compared to an alternative automated implementation, which is not blockchain-based, are still to be thoroughly examined.

Theoretische und praktische Smart Contracts - Realisierung eines Investmentfonds

Jakob Felix Schneider

Otto Jockel, Sebastian Stommel
