The research focuses on the assessment of the criminal turnover of crypto currency as the most sought-after product of the distributed ledger technology (blockchain). The subject of the research is crimes in which the virtual currency is either a means or an object of criminal assault. The research objectives were the search for criminological regularities in the commission of crypto crimes and the assessment of advantages and risks of the virtual currency turnover. The methods of comparative, criminological and statistical analysis made it possible to analyze the above risks through the prism of economic and constructive features of distributed ledger technology (DLT) and identify the most common ways of committing crimes, while the classification of methods of criminal use of the blockchain supported by examples of judicial practices defined prospective areas of the preventive activity. Based on the research findings it was concluded that the cooperation between countries in monitoring crypto crimes and development of a legislative basis for their prevention needs to be expanded.

This thesis analyzes the texts of Bitcoin as a particular case for Neoliberal discourse as it is developed by Austrian School of Economics. Fundamental concepts of the Austrian School of Economics are based on individual liberty. This liberty considered to be possible only in the absence of the state in their theories. This absence defined in terms of states’ non-interference to market. The texts of Bitcoin follow a similar trail of thought and conceptualize freedom on the basis of individual liberty versus state and financial institutions. By claiming to bypass the intermediary institutions which are ‘hampering’ free-market, the texts of Bitcoin argue to overcome the control of the authorities. The main problematic of this thesis is to discuss how the market relations in Neoliberal discourse reduce the notion of freedom to financial freedom produced by market laws. Texts of Bitcoin claim to bypass authority of the state and intermediary institutions with the logic of free-market and the technology they propose. By discussing their main problematization and their claims this thesis aims to show what kind of governance Bitcoin aims to bring with the logic of pure market relations.

Distributing the Data Store Among Peers

The last step turned the blockchain data structure into an immutable, append-only data store that can serve as a tamper-resistant ledger for transaction data. Having a single, immutable, append-only history of transaction data in isolation may be of limited value for our goal of clarifying ownership based on a group of computers that serve as witnesses to ownership-related events. Hence, this step focuses on establishing a purely distributed peer-to-peer system that shares transaction information.

Variance: Secure Two-Party Protocol for Solving Yao's Millionaires' Problem in Bitcoin

Secure multiparty protocols are useful tools for parties wishing to jointly compute a function while keeping their input data secret. The millionaires’ problem is the first secure two-party computation problem, where the goal is to securely compare two private numbers without a trusted third-party. There have been several solutions to the problem, including Yao’s protocol [Yao, 1982] and Mix and Match [Jakobsson and Juels, 2000]. However, Yao’s Protocol is not secure in the malicious model and Mix and Match unnecessarily releases theoretically breakable encryptions of information about the data that is not needed for the comparison. In addition, neither protocol has any verification of the validity of the inputs before they are used. In this thesis, we introduce Variance, a privacy-preserving two-party protocol for solving the Yao’s millionaires’ problem in a Bitcoin setting, in which each party controls several Bitcoin accounts (public Bitcoin addresses) and they want to find out who owns more bitcoins without revealing (1) how many accounts they own and the balance of each account, (2) the addresses associated with their accounts, and (3) their total wealth of bitcoins while assuring the other party that they are not claiming more bitcoin than they possess. We utilize commitments, encryptions, zero knowledge proofs, and homomorphisms as the major computational tools to provide a solution to the problem, and subsequently prove that the solution is secure against active adversaries in the malicious model.

Spurred by interest from investors and those excited about its commercial and banking potential, the value of the cryptocurrency has seen its value greatly increase since its beginning in 2009. This project explains the underlying technology behind Bitcoin, how Bitcoin is and will change commerce, and what potential lies ahead for the digital currency.

Bitcoin som diversifiering : En kvantitativ studie som undersöker korrelationen mellan bitcoin och finansiella tillgångar

Pengar har under en lång tid spelat en central roll i människans samhälle och dagens samhälle präglas av allt mer handel. Utifrån detta har nya betalningsmetoder utvecklats. En förändring i konsumentbeteendet har bidragit till att allt fler individer väljer elektroniska betalningstjänster. En relativt ny innovation är kryptovalutan bitcoin som erbjuder betalning mellan köpare och säljare utan inblandning av en tredje part. Ett flertal studier har gjorts med syftet att fastställa om bitcoin är en valuta eller en tillgång, något som visat sig vara svårt. Något som varit tydligare är att bitcoins värdeförändringar inte tycks vara korrelerad med andra investeringsalternativ. I en studie av Brière et al. (2015) drogs slutsatsen att bitcoin är en intressant tillgång för en investerare tack vare bitcoins låga korrelationskoefficient med andra tillgångar. Denna studie grundar sig i de teoretiska utgångspunkterna om Famas (1970) hypotes om den effektiva marknaden, Markowitz (1952) moderna portföljteori och Rogers (2003) teori om spridning av innovationer. Med detta som utgångspunkt är syftet med denna studie att undersöka hur korrelationskoefficienten mellan bitcoin och traditionella investeringstillgångar som aktier, valutor och råvaror ser ut idag samt hur dessa har förändrats över tid. Med hjälp av Famas (1970) teori om effektiva marknader och Rogers (2003) teori om spridning av innovationer kommer en diskussion om huruvida bitcoins egenskaper som investering i den moderna portföljen har förändrats i takt med att bitcoin blivit mer använd, både som betalningsmedel och investeringsalternativ. För att besvara dessa frågor undersöks korrelationskoefficienterna mellan bitcoin och elva andra tillgångar i kombination med en analys av en deskriptiv statistik. Med en undersökningsperiod som sträcker sig från 18 augusti 2011 till 17 mars 2017. Denna period har även delats upp i mindre tidsperioder för att utifrån detta analysera om det skett några förändringar i korrelationen mellan bitcoin och de traditionella tillgångarna i studien. Resultatet visade att bitcoin inte är korrelerad med andra traditionella tillgångar, oavsett vilken tidsperiod som undersöks. Det visade sig att bitcoin i förhållande till andra tillgångar är en riskfylld investering på grund av bland annat en hög volatilitet. Dock kompenseras detta av bitcoins höga årlig avkastning. Av resultatet framgår det även att volatiliteten för bitcoin har minskat med tiden och att kryptovalutan inte är lika riskfylld idag jämfört med tidigare.

We discuss the current state of the Canadian real estate market and the impact blockchain technology could have on it. We start with a review of the current popular and scholarly literary landscape relating to blockchain technology and its real estate applications. Special focus is given to the impact the technology could have on transaction costs, transaction times and fraud deterrence in this market. Preliminary recommendations are provided in the form of blockchain based bidding and transaction systems.

Lightweight Energy Proficient Anonymous Routing for Low-Power MANET

Low-power Ad Hoc systems are the most challenging aspect for secured Ad Hoc systems. The resource constrained devices were easily tampered due to the limited operated environment. Over the past decade, the usage rate of Ad Hoc systems are rapidly increased in modern communication systems. However, the security is still a research factor for Lowpower Ad Hoc systems. Offering Security and Anonymity is an important research issue in Low-power Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (LPMANET). Various anonymous routing protocols presented to maintain anonymity in adverse environment, these protocols proven significant results in Ad Hoc systems but failure to improved the anonymity efficiency in Low-power Ad hoc networks. In this paper, a Lightweight Energy Efficient Anonymous Routing (LEEAR) protocol is proposed to offer energy efficient anonymity and security in an adverse environment by combining modified zero knowledge proof, bloom filter and cryptography techniques. We designed the LEEAR protocol to determine the efficiency in-terms security and energy against routing level and traffic level attacks. We simulated the experiment in NS2 simulator the determine the results and ensure importance of the proposed LEEAR protocol in accomplishing energy efficiency and anonymity.
