Organisational factors that influence the Blockchain adoption in Ireland: A study by J. E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics in association with the Blockchain Association of Ireland

Research carried out at NUI Galway has found a 40% blockchain adoption rate among Irish enterprises to date. The study investigated why implementation in Ireland is relatively low, and proposes recommendations to increase blockchain awareness and adoption that can provide opportunities not only for economic growth but also create a new foundation for how Irish organisations and government conduct business.

Chronicle of a Clash Foretold: Blockchains and the GDPR's Right to Erasure

GDPR abiding blockchain systems are feasible. Jurists, programmers, and other experts are increasingly working on this aim nowadays. Still, manifold blockchain networks functioning out there suggest a new generation of data protection issues brought about by this technology. Some of these issues will likely concern the right to erasure set up by Art. 17 of the EU data protection regulation (‘GDPR’). These cases will soon be discussed before national authorities and courts, and will likely test the technical solutions explored in this paper, such as hashing-out methods, keys destruction, chameleon hash functions, and more. By taking into account matters of design and the complex architecture of blockchains, we shall distinguish between blockchains that have been thought about to expressly meet the requirements of the EU regulation, and blockchains that, for one reason or another, e.g. ante GDPR designed blockchains, trigger some sort of clash with the legal order, that is, (i) matters of principle on e.g. political decentralization; (ii) standards on security and data protection; (iii) a mix of them; and, (iv) social clash. It is still unclear how the interplay of legal regulation, technological constraints, social norms, and market interests, will end up in this context. Rulings and court orders will be instructive. It is a clash foretold, after all.

Blockchains in IHE-Based Networks

INTRODUCTION: Interoperability of health information systems is one of the key challenges of modern healthcare systems. A weak spot in this technology stack of interoperability protocols as defined by HL7 and IHE is cross affinity domain exchange of access control information and policies. In several industries the Blockchain technology had a major breakthrough. The goal of this paper is to elaborate how to exchange cross affinity domain access information enhancing well established IHE networks with block chain technology. METHODS: Using literature analysis and research on current interoperability standards the state of the art of securely exchanging medical information was elaborated. We enhanced this system with the capabilities of the peer2peer based Blockchain network elaborating the workflows of exchanging the access control specific information. RESULTS: We extended an IHE based affinity domain by adding a block chain ledger to the deployment. This ledger is fed with XACML based policies which are propagated through the peer2peer based system. Using the Blockchain protocol other affinity domains are informed of the change and can retrieve the information. Acting as an additional source of policies and consents the policy decision point is capable of querying this network and building a decision based on the retrieved information.

Digital model of sharing economy: blockchain technology management

The modernization of traditional process and service industries, organization of trading and procurement procedures, related financial and logistical operations, change in the structure of consumption associated with the through penetration of information technologies and digitization of economic processes creates the basis for formation of new markets and conditions for their functioning. As employees, consumers, businesses, and manufacturing processes become increasingly related as a single digital space, digitalization offers wide possibilities for new decision-making models being the basis for ongoing global economic and social transformations which change business and consumer models, one of which is the sharing economy. The digital model of sharing economy will be developed and transformed in the next few years to achieve the main purpose – the use of unengaged or underused assets in the economy. In this regard, the search for new tools and technologies for business models development is vital. The authors present the content, advantages, current state and prospects for development of the distributed registry technology (blockchain). It is presented that it will increase transparency, security and efficiency of transactions of economic entities in various financial and non-financial fields. A transactional model of the economic system based on the blockchain technology is presented. The sharing economy features and characteristics are given.

The First Original Copy and the Role of Blockchain in the Reproduction of Cultural Heritage

Abstract The First Original Copy refers to any first true 3D facsimile of a digitally reproduced physical object. The notion of a copy being the first and original implies that it is unique and therefore the approach used for managing rights and ownership influences its value. Whilst virtual goods traded within virtual worlds are subject to rules and policies, the production of digital objects in the real world does not have a mechanism from which rarity and uniqueness can be guaranteed. Digital copies are subject to further copying and thus, the value of even an exact copy can never be perceived to be equivalent to its original. Through what means can we imbue 3D reproductions of cultural objects with value that is at least asymptotic to their originals? There may be a candidate solution. Discussed in this article is a possible approach for resolving a long-term issue related to authenticity, ownership, perpetuity, and the quantitative tracking of value associated with 3D copies. Blockchains essentially bring the systemic management of virtual objects within virtual worlds into the real world. This forum article examines the candidate solution by answering the questions above, and discusses the issues associated with the concept of the First Original Copy.

It has the potential to revolutionize the way we do business, and it can be combined with other technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) or Artificial Intelligence (AI) to increase its disruptive effect. In this paper we study the impact of the implementation of a blockchain solution in the area of solar energy. The results of this research demonstrate that blockchain technology can disrupt the energy sector in various ways including, among others, disruption in process, product, position and paradigm, and platform innovation.

The Implementation of Halal Supply Chain With Private Blockchain in Indonesia

Since Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population, the demand for halal products is increasing. Indonesia has not taken the advantage of these opportunities, such as, the implementation of supply chain activities were not integrated with stakeholders like suppliers, factories, transportation, logistics and retailers. This is what has happened in PT Multi Terminal Indonesia warehousing with their halal storage. This paper explains the problem with a private blockchain technology that will help the integration and transparency of every data activities from stakeholders. This paper uses SWOT analysis and Qualitative research to determine the impact and to clearly describe the application of this system. The result of the analysis of the occurrence of collaboration between stakeholders in halal supply chain activities is synergistic and transparent. The use of the Private Blockchain will increase customer trust in halal products which raises awareness of the importance of halal supply chain. Moreover, private blockchain in transportation and logistics activities can be accessed by the customer through smartphones QR code to achieve lean logistics. It changes the mindset of consumers to switch and believe in using products based on the Halal supply chain so that Indonesians escape from the current issue of religion. The writers’ propose is to manage the Halal supply chain with the Private Blockchain in Indonesia by the Government,in this case the designated State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). To introduce this system the government must socialize the above and below the Line.

Unveiling the Key Challenges to Achieve the Breakthrough of Blockchain: Insights from the Payments Industry

The emergence of blockchain technology has led to an animated discussion among both researchers and practitioners about its future prospects. Similar to other upcoming technologies, in the foreground of the analysis are often the potential benefits of blockchain. Much less discussed are the challenges the technology must overcome before achieving breakthrough in traditional areas, such as the financial services sector. To close this gap, and to identify the challenges blockchain needs to overcome, we explore its impact in the payments industry, which represents a major pillar of banking and the cradle of blockchain. For this purpose, we performed a Delphi study and subsequently conducted a number of dedicated interviews. The findings enable us to delineate six key challenges that have to be tackled. Our study contributes to the literature on blockchain and has important practical implications as it indicates issues that should be addressed in order to foster its dissemination.
