Artistic Creation in the Metaverse: A Case Study of Astrophotography and AI-Generated Art

[[abstract]]隨著元宇宙、區塊鏈與非同質化代幣(NFT)等技術的發展,數位藝術的創作、展示與流通方式都在改變。而數位作品長期面臨所有權與盜版的問題,使在數位創作的實務上存在各種挑戰,促使研究者思考與想像元宇宙與數位藝術結合的可能性與研究性。本研究在思考如果這些虛擬空間結合了區塊鏈與 NFT 技術與元宇宙之藝術創作,是否能改善數位藝術作品的所有權問題與協助觀眾理解Web3.0相關的概念。研究方法以創作實作為主,會在元宇宙空間中打造一個數位藝術展覽,展出創作者過去的天文攝影、AI 繪圖與影片,並透過 NFT 將這些作品上鏈,結合空間設計與互動安排,觀察實際運作情形。研究結果顯示,NFT上鏈機制可有效建立可追溯可建立版權的數位資產,改善數位作品盜版與複製的所有權問題,透過元宇宙展覽也能提供沉浸式體驗,融入區塊鏈知識提升反詐騙概念,展現出藝術創作與社會教育功能的可能性。 With the development of technologies such as the metaverse, blockchain, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the creation, exhibition, and circulation of digital art are undergoing significant transformations. However, digital artworks have long faced challenges related to ownership ambiguity and copyright infringement, posing practical difficulties for digital art creation. These issues have prompted researchers to explore the potential and feasibility of integrating metaverse environments with digital art practices. This study aims to examine whether the integration of blockchain and NFT technologies within metaverse-based art creation can improve ownership protection of digital artworks and assist audiences in understanding concepts related to Web3.0. A practice-based research approach was adopted, in which a digital art exhibition was constructed within a metaverse virtual environment. The exhibition presented the creator’s astronomical photography, AI-generated images, and video works, all of which were minted as NFTs on the blockchain. Spatial design and interactive arrangements were incorporated to observe and analyze the practical operation of the exhibition. The results indicate that NFT minting mechanisms can effectively establish traceable digital assets with verifiable ownership records, thereby mitigating issues related to unauthorized duplication and copyright disputes. Furthermore, metaverse-based exhibitions can provide immersive viewing experiences while integrating blockchain knowledge to enhance awareness of anti-fraud concepts, demonstrating the potential of digital art to function as both an artistic practice and a medium for social education.

Το αυξανόμενο ενδιαφέρον για εναλλακτικές επενδύσεις που προσφέρουν διαφοροποίηση και υψηλότερες αποδόσεις, καθοδηγείται από τους περιορισμούς των παραδοσιακών χρηματοπιστωτικών αγορών και τις εξελισσόμενες ανάγκες των σύγχρονων επενδυτών. Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή διερευνώνται οι μηχανισμοί μεταβολής των τιμών δύο τομέων εναλλακτικών επενδύσεων: των επενδύσεων με κριτήρια Περιβάλλοντος, Κοινωνίας και Διακυβέρνησης (Environmental, Social, and Governance – ESG), με έμφαση στις εισηγμένες εταιρείες που επιδεικνύουν περιβαλλοντική υπευθυνότητα, και των ψηφιακών περιουσιακών στοιχείων που βασίζονται στην τεχνολογία Blockchain, μέσα από ένα ενοποιημένο μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο. Το πρώτο μέρος της διατριβής εξετάζει τις χρηματοοικονομικές επιπτώσεις της Εταιρικής Περιβαλλοντικής Υπευθυνότητας (Corporate Environmental Responsibility – CER) στις επιχειρήσεις του δείκτη S&P 500 κατά τη διάρκεια δεκαπέντε ετών. Αξιολογείται η επίδραση της περιβαλλοντικής επίδοσης στην αποτίμηση της αγοράς μέσω δεικτών προσαρμοσμένων στον κίνδυνο, οι οποίοι βασίζονται στο υπόδειγμα CAPM και στην υπόθεση της αποτελεσματικής αγοράς. Η ανάλυση, η οποία στηρίζεται σε τεχνικές παλινδρόμησης δεδομένων πάνελ, όπως οι εκτιμήσεις OLS και 3SLS, εισάγει την έννοια του «Πράσινου Premium» — ενός μετρήσιμου αντισταθμίσματος μεταξύ περιβαλλοντικής υπευθυνότητας και αποδόσεων των επενδυτών. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι, ενώ η CER συσχετίζεται θετικά με λειτουργικούς δείκτες, όπως οι πωλήσεις και τα κέρδη, η χρηματιστηριακή απόδοση παραμένει κατώτερη, γεγονός που υποδηλώνει ένα διαρκές μειονέκτημα για τις επιχειρήσεις με περιβαλλοντικό προσανατολισμό στα μάτια των επενδυτών. Το δεύτερο μέρος της διατριβής επικεντρώνεται στη χρηματοοικονομική διάσταση του Blockchain, παρέχοντας μια ολοκληρωμένη ανάλυση της συμπεριφοράς τιμών των Μη Εναλλάξιμων Διακριτικών (Non-Fungible Tokens – NFTs) μέσω σύγχρονων μεθόδων μηχανικής μάθησης. Δεδομένα που αντλήθηκαν απευθείας από πλατφόρμες Blockchain και μετασχηματίστηκαν μέσω προηγμένων τεχνικών μηχανικής χαρακτηριστικών, χρησιμοποιούνται για την αξιολόγηση της προβλεπτικής ικανότητας των μοντέλων Random Forest, XGBoost και Πολυεπίπεδου Αντιληπτή (Multilayer Perceptron). Το τελικό σύνολο δεδομένων προέκυψε από μια προηγμένη διαδικασία μετασχηματισμού χαρακτηριστικών, εμπλουτισμένη με σύνθεση χαρακτηριστικών βάσει εξειδικευμένης γνώσης και Deep Feature Synthesis, αναδιαμορφωμένο μέσω Ανάλυσης Κύριων Συνιστωσών (Principal Component Analysis – PCA) και βελτιστοποιημένο μέσω τεχνικών επιλογής χαρακτηριστικών για βέλτιστη ερμηνευσιμότητα και μείωση διαστασιμότητας. Από τα μοντέλα που εξετάστηκαν, το XGBoost παρουσίασε τη μεγαλύτερη ακρίβεια πρόβλεψης, με τα ιστορικά δεδομένα τιμών να αποτελούν τον πιο καθοριστικό παράγοντα πρόβλεψης. Συνολικά, τα δύο μέρη της διατριβής συμβάλλουν στη διεύρυνση της βιβλιογραφίας σχετικά με τις μη παραδοσιακές κατηγορίες επενδυτικών στοιχείων, μέσω της εφαρμογής ισχυρών αναλυτικών μεθόδων σε διαφορετικά επενδυτικά πεδία. Τα αποτελέσματα παρέχουν εξειδικευμένες γνώσεις σχετικά με τους παράγοντες που διαμορφώνουν την αξία των περιουσιακών στοιχείων και θεμελιώνουν ένα μεταβιβάσιμο μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο για την πρόβλεψη τιμών περιουσιακών στοιχείων σε αναδυόμενες και ετερογενείς αγορές.

Virtually Disposable: A Theory and History of Digital Trash

Virtually Disposable: A Theory and History of Digital Trash historicizes and critically analyzes the conditions under which the cultural category of trash does and does not come into play in historical and contemporary digital environments, from the American 1980s to the present. Understanding the determination of real-world objects as trash as a reflexive, cross-cultural aspect of the maintenance of physical space, this dissertation evaluates the criteria according to which modern users and web platforms perform the same calculus in their management of digital files, from the machine-readable forms of data collected by corporate entities to artifacts as potentially personally meaningful as a photo stored on one’s cell phone. Chapter 1 traces the development of delete functions on business-oriented personal computers, posing the graphical representation of delete in trash can-styled icons on user-facing interfaces as a design response to the limited storage affordances of local machines in the 1980s. This chapter locates the trash can icon as part of the same genealogy of digital waste-management strategies as commercial content-moderation of the Web 2.0 era (ca. 2006–) but advances their respective models of digital disposability in terms of “data custodians” (local, determined by storage) and “content janitors” (non-local, informed by hygiene). Chapter 2 thinks about the contemporary management of user-generated content by platforms in terms of archive, arguing that the cloud has ushered in a post-storage moment. The tacit valuation of user-generated content as data under platform capitalism may account for its seemingly indefinite maintenance online, but the same conditions of preservation and display on the user profile provoke new anxieties in the user that act upon their online self-representation in digital space, resulting in curated, digitally hygienic archives that are neither truly personal nor all that personally revealing. Chapter 3 then assesses the extent to which the value reflexively assigned to user-generated content (with a particular interest in digital images, in this case) under platform capitalism may reliably translate into extra-digital systems of value. This chapter catalogs various failed attempts on the part of relatively empowered cultural institutions such as the museum and art world to confer value on born-digital visual art and reads them in conversation with similarly doomed efforts to stabilize digital images as financial commodities, most notably in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Although digital media may appear virtual, digital culture of our post-cloud, post-Web 2.0 moment relies upon material infrastructure, the ongoing support of which depends upon the consumption of rare-earth minerals, energy, and water and which results in the generation of toxic e-waste. Virtually Disposable builds upon research located at the intersection of critical discard studies and environmental media studies by questioning the implicit determinations of value that inform and have informed the personal and corporate maintenance and disposal of digital files both today and historically. Analyzing the logics according to which a digitally mediated thing becomes disposable, as well as attending to the functional suspension of trash as a cultural category under the cloud and financial imperatives of platform capitalism, this dissertation accounts for a variable in the equation seldom examined in existing studies of the flows of e-waste alone: that the physical machines that afford file-storage reach their breaking points in no small part due to the deluge of value-unclear files they are now made to store and process.

NxGenT: A decentralized trust system for B5G and 6G networks based on blockchain and smart contracts

The submitted work contains the following highlights: • We detail NxGenT, a decentralized reputation system for B5G and 6G networks. • We propose a three-phase reputation mechanism based on smart contracts. • We implement NxGenT and release its source code as open-source software. • We analyze NxGenT’s design and resilience against relevant trust attacks. • We evaluate NxGenT’s functionality and performance through experimental analysis. The evolution towards Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G networks presents highly heterogeneous and dynamic scenarios in which numerous entities, including network operators, service providers and end users, interact in environments of mutual trust. However, the open nature of these networks poses significant challenges regarding security and trust, as traditional centralized mechanisms may prove inadequate or insufficient in such scenarios. In this context, decentralized trust systems are positioned as a promising solution to assess the reliability of entities participating in B5G and 6G networks, thereby enhancing decision-making processes and resilience of these environments. This paper introduces NxGenT , a decentralized reputation system based on blockchain and smart contracts for B5G/6G networks that guarantees the immutability and transparency of the collected evidence on entities’ performance and behavior, while decentralizing and automating the reputation mechanism. NxGenT is a decentralized, trustless system in which entities establish and verify compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLA) and provide feedback or subjective opinions about the entities they interact with in order to compute and assign reputation scores. To evaluate the proposal, we implement a local B5G testbed that deploys the primary components of this type of network, along with a second cloud-based testbed to analyze scalability in networks of different sizes. Finally, we contextualize NxGenT within the 6GENABLERS project as a representative use case of the proposed trust system, thus demonstrating its applicability in real scenarios.

Detecting bitcoin fraud using graph neural networks

The rise of Bitcoin has revolutionized the financial landscape, but it has also opened the door to a new era of criminal activities. Criminals take advantage of the anonymity provided by Bitcoin to conduct illicit transactions and engage in fraudulent activities. To address this issue, this paper proposes a detection model using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to detect fraudulent activities in the complex financial systems of Bitcoin. From the GNNs, we use EvolveGCN and EvolveGGCN to compare between them and find a powerful model that can investigate the network construction of financial transactions and capture patterns and anomalies that traditional methods may miss. In the literature, there have been a limited number of studies on Bitcoin fraud detection using GNNs, especially EvolveGGCN. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the detection of fraud in the Bitcoin network using EvolveGCN and EvolveGGCN. In addition, we used a more recent dataset called Elliptic++, which is an extension of the Elliptic Dataset. The dataset provides valuable information on the behavior and patterns of fraudulent actions in the Bitcoin network. The results show that EvolveGGCN outperforms other models in terms of precision, recall, F1 score, and micro-F1 score. With an F1-score of 0.90 and micro-F1 of 0.93 for detecting illicit transactions in the early time steps.

The article examines the role of blockchain and financial technologies in ensuring the transparency of operations with virtual assets in the context of the digital transformation of the financial system. It is substantiated that the development of financial technologies is one of the key drivers of the modernization of contemporary financial markets, shaped by global processes of digitalization, innovation, and changes in the economic behavior of market participants. It is determined that financial technologies form a new architecture of the financial system and contribute to increased efficiency, accessibility, and transparency of financial services.The study analyzes global and national factors influencing the development of financial technologies. Among them, particular emphasis is placed on the digitalization of the economy, the advancement of blockchain technologies and decentralized finance, changes in consumer expectations, the globalization of financial markets, as well as institutional, regulatory, and infrastructural challenges at the national level. It is demonstrated that the combination of these factors determines the pace and directions of the implementation of innovative financial solutions, particularly in the sphere of virtual asset circulation.The paper explores the economic essence of virtual assets as digital objects that possess value and operate within a digital environment based on distributed ledger technologies. The main types of virtual assets include cryptocurrencies, tokens, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Their economic functions, specific characteristics, and risks associated with high volatility and the cross-border nature of their circulation are systematized.Special attention is paid to the impact of financial technologies on the management of virtual assets. It is substantiated that the use of blockchain platforms, smart contracts, analytical and monitoring financial solutions, digital custodial services, and regulatory instruments contributes to enhancing transparency, accountability, and controllability of operations with virtual assets.The study systematizes practical solutions for ensuring the transparency of operations with virtual assets and identifies their impact on building trust, reducing operational risks, and improving the effectiveness of financial control.It is concluded that the transparency of operations with virtual assets is formed through the comprehensive integration of blockchain and financial technologies into a unified digital financial infrastructure, where the maximum effect is achieved through their combined application. Ensuring transparency in virtual asset operations is systemic in nature and requires the integration of technological, organizational, and regulatory instruments. In this context, blockchain and financial technologies act not only as technical tools for recording transactions but also as key drivers of trust, efficiency, and stability in digital financial markets.The necessity of combining technological, organizational, and regulatory instruments is emphasized, along with maintaining a balance between the transparency of financial operations and the protection of confidential data. Prospects for further research are identified, including the evaluation of the effectiveness of financial technology implementation across different segments of the financial market and the development of regulatory models for the circulation of virtual assets.
