Transcendental Pragmatism vs. Benjamin Chicka's Pragmatic Constructive Realism: A Comparison of Method and Metaphysics

In God the Created: Pragmatic Constructive Realism in Philosophy and Theology, Benjamin Chicka sets for himself some demanding problems. First, how do we say anything at all about a God who is the answer to the ontological question rather than half an answer? Here, Chicka sides with Robert Neville, affirming a wholly transcendent God, the creator of being-itself. However, Chicka finds Neville's God to be too transcendent. Having embraced the transcendent God, Chicka then asks how we can say anything theologically about God. Here, he is inspired by John Cobb's theological project of understanding God in relation to the concerns of the world, and so he seeks a God in intimate and so immanent relationship with the world. However, Chicka finds Cobb's process God not transcendent enough (God cannot be one actuality alongside others), and finally too constraining, such that the urgings of divine aims end up making the adventure of reality more a matter of destiny than of dance. Chicka rejects pansychism, both in the process tradition and in the agapism and evolutionary love of Charles Sanders Peirce. He finds Peirce's agapism too Hegelian. However, having jettisoned pansychism, Chicka needs a way to move from the world back to God. I am not convinced that he ever gets there.Chicka does not seek to resolve the debate between Neville and Cobb but rather to create a “mediating position” that extends the insights of both.1 A crucial move in this effort is his appeal to pragmatic notions of continuity. I find this to be the most exciting dimension of his project because at the very least it suggests ways to move pragmatic responses to Thomism beyond stale accusations of substance theism. Chicka, however, does not go this direction, despite his seeming desire to understand creation from which both the world and God emerge. At the end of the day, Chicka has only continuity to get us to knowledge of God, and this alone is insufficient.This paper is both a critique of Chicka's pragmatic constructive realism as it relates to knowledge of God and an effort to defend a counterproposal that covers much of the same territory as Chicka's proposal. It will begin with a more sustained discussion of Chicka and argue that once he takes metaphysical normativity off the table, he loses any ability to differentiate between good theology and bad theology. I then show that solving the problem of God-talk is essential to any specifically pragmatic theology because without claims about God that are not strictly negative in nature, God becomes a meaningless concept for pragmatism. I will then defend an argument for creation ex nihilo that draws on the work of Robert Spitzer, S. J. This argument places my counterproposal within the ground of being school of metaphysics (and so hopefully keeping the pressure on process thinkers who incorrectly dismiss such arguments), without having the difficulties created by Neville and Chicka's wild God. Finally, I will seek to show how the problem of God-talk can be overcome in a way that leaves the idea of God pragmatically meaningful. I will do so by drawing on the two possibilities for knowledge of God: Spitzer's proposal for “hyperphatic” knowledge of God; and transcendental pragmatism.Chicka argues that our abductive claims about God participate in God. He contends that “God is the sort of creator marked by Peirce's categories and semiotic activity.”2 Further, he writes, “Symbols, as determinate things, are part of God's nature that comes from creating.”3 At least two problems arise with these claims. First, they seem to be non sequiturs. There is no clear reason why claims made by beings must necessarily reveal the ground of being, especially if God is not one actuality alongside others. Emphasizing the continuity of the symbol makers with creation is insufficient for explaining what makes for a good symbol about God. If all symbols as determinate things are part of God's nature, then we do not yet have a way determining which symbols do a better job of revealing God's nature than others. Chicka does offer some clues. For example, he writes, “Neville's theory could gain some concrete traction if instead of finite/infinite contrasts and broken symbols, it is pushed in the direction of finite/infinite growth.”4 However, what constitutes growth is unclear. If, by virtue of its novelty, a symbol grows creaturely expressions of God, then any symbol would do this. If growth obtains come what may, we still do not know the difference between a good symbol of God and a bad one. If all symbols are symbols of God, then to say that a symbol reveals God does not tell us anything at all.There are clues of a strong teleology in Chicka's text. He writes, “God immanently revealed is that toward which everything is developing,”5 but Chicka does not provide a reason, so far as I can see, to believe that everything is developing toward anything at all. At best, nature develops, but that only means it changes. A Computational Review of Privacy-Preserving Mechanisms for the Smart Grid

Smart grid technologies have rapidly become one of the largest and most comprehensive sources of data for the modern utility. For the most part, data streams are seen as an essential tool that enable utilities to carry their day-to-day business operations, but they also create the need for efficient and secure data management strategies. In the context of the smart grid, ensuring data privacy is becoming an increasing concern due to a combination of factors that range from shifts in operational paradigms and rapid technology evolution to changes in legislation. Furthermore, researchers have highlighted the risks associated with improperly protected energy records. For example, energy consumption data from homes could be used to infer the behaviors and habits of home occupants through activity recognition or user profiling (Fan, 2017), which may lead to unfair service pricing, targeted advertising, or other personal security violations. Similarly, Electric Vehicles’ (EVs) charging metadata could be used to reveal private information about the owner such as their payment methods, preferred charging stations, and other locational and timing information that could be used to reconstruct the vehicle owner’s behaviors. The privacy of user data, even when used for statistical analysis or machine learning training processes, also needs to be carefully considered, as an individual’s private traits may still be vulnerable if their inclusion/exclusion greatly impacts the result or could be linked to a public dataset through cross-reference. The breach of user privacy also has severe impacts for organizations that store, transmit, or work on the data in the form of diminishing the public’s trust in them while potentially incurring legal consequences (e.g., fines and suspensions under the European Union General Data Protection Regulation, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, etc.). Because of these risks, several privacy-preserving mechanisms are available to help organizations comply with privacy legislations and prevent the unauthorized and malicious use of user data. In light of these concerns, this report focuses on performing a computational review of privacy-preserving mechanisms that have received a significant amount of interest in literature. It specifically focuses on 1) homomorphic encryption, 2) zero-knowledge proofs, 3) differential privacy, and 4) federated learning. It is worth noting that although many of the methods presented in this document rely on cryptographic primitives, their intent is not to provide perfect secrecy, but rather to enable users to maintain privacy, and thus they shall not be compared or equated to other constructs that are aimed to address cybersecurity constructs.

Model Complexity Reduction for ZKML Healthcare applications

Web 3.0 represents the next significant evolution of the internet that embodies the underlying decentralized network architectures, distributed ledgers, and advanced AI capabilities. Though the technologies are maturing rapidly, considerable barriers exist to high-scale adoption. The author discusses the barriers and the mitigations through specific technologies maturing to solve those issues in an earlier paper titled Moving Beyond POCs and Pilots, published in 2023 in Blockchain in Healthcare Today. These include privacy-preserving technologies, off-chain and on-chain design optimizations, and the multi-dimensional approach needed in planning and adopting these technologies. As an extension, this paper discusses one such enabler, zero knowledge machine learning (ZKML), which merges two streams of technology in unique ways to address problems in privacy and the cost of inference. Zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) allow one party to prove the validity of a statement to another party without revealing any additional information about the statement itself. The ZKML combines the cryptographic principle of ZKP with machine learning (ML) techniques. It is still a maturing technology and needs baselines for applications in global healthcare. In this effort, the authors conceptualize the technical and operational feasibility of using ZKML and implement a reference healthcare implementation using the synthetic International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) in the evaluation phase in a global healthcare setting for high-volume data collection, including patient-reported outcomes. Model complexity reduction is researched and reported for the ICHOM diabetes dataset to advance the usage of ML models in global standards of healthcare data collection in network decentralized architectures for increased data protection and efficiencies.

Privacy-preserving credential smart contracts using Zokrates

The need for secure user authentication in blockchain-based applications has been growing with the increased adoption of Decentralized Identity (DID) credentials in blockchain.Zokrates, a tool designed to protect user privacy within smart contracts, had a limitation in that it could not accept authenticated user information such as credentials, only allowing the use of manually inputted data.In this paper, we propose a smart contract system that securely validates DID credentials to overcome the limitations of traditional centralized authentication systems.This system ensures the safe identification of users within blockchain-based applications by authenticating their identities in a trusted manner within the blockchain.As the demand for user authentication in blockchain rises, this paper emphasizes the significance of a blockchain-based identity verification system that guarantees both privacy and security.Leveraging the Zero-Knowledge Proof method and utilizing the Zokrates tool, this innovative approach aims to provide solutions for the digital identity verification process, thereby expanding the scope of blockchain technology applications.Moreover, we also provide a CLI for each entity.We help anyone who wants to authenticate their identity using the tool to safely verify it on-chain.

Dual JPEG Compatibility: a Reliable and Explainable Tool for Image Forensics

Given a JPEG pipeline (compression or decompression), this paper demonstrates how to find the antecedent of an 8x8 block. If it exists, the block is considered compatible with the pipeline. For unaltered images, all blocks remain compatible with the original pipeline; however, for manipulated images, this is not necessarily true. This article provides a first demonstration of the potential of compatibility-based approaches for JPEG image forensics. It introduces a method to address the key challenge of finding a block antecedent in a high-dimensional space, relying on a local search algorithm with restrictions on the search space. We show that inpainting, copy-move, and splicing, when applied after JPEG compression, result in three distinct mismatch problems that can be detected. In particular, if the image is re-compressed after modification, the manipulation can be detected when the quality factor of the second compression is higher than that of the first. Through extensive experiments, we highlight the potential of this compatibility attack under varying degrees of assumptions. While our approach shows promising results-outperforming three state-of-the-art deep learning models in an idealized setting-it remains a proof of concept rather than an off-the-shelf forensic tool. Notably, with a perfect knowledge of the JPEG pipeline, our method guarantees zero false alarms in block-by-block localization, given sufficient computational power.

Ensuring workforce compliance has become a critical priority for global enterprises, particularly in sectors such as banking, healthcare, aviation, and logistics, where safety, security, and regulatory adherence are non-negotiable. Traditional drug testing, alcohol screening, and background verification workflows often rely on fragmented, paper-based, or siloed digital systems that introduce inefficiencies, data integrity risks, and audit challenges. These limitations hinder organizations from meeting the increasing demands of multi-jurisdictional compliance frameworks while also exposing them to reputational and legal risks. This article explores the design and implementation of a blockchain-enabled workforce compliance platform that reimagines the verification pipeline through the principles of immutability, decentralization, and cryptographic security. The proposed architecture leverages permissioned blockchain networks, integrated with smart contracts and distributed identity frameworks, to ensure that drug and alcohol testing results, criminal background checks, and employment verification records are securely stored, transparently auditable, and accessible only to authorized stakeholders. We present a comparative framework highlighting how blockchain-based compliance pipelines outperform traditional systems in areas such as tamper-proof recordkeeping, cross-border interoperability, and regulatory audit readiness. The study also emphasizes integration strategies with enterprise HR systems, third-party verification agencies, and global regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, OSHA, and aviation compliance codes). Furthermore, the role of privacy-preserving technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs and decentralized identifiers (DIDs) is discussed in enabling compliance without compromising employee confidentiality. The findings demonstrate that blockchain-enabled compliance solutions deliver significant strategic value, including enhanced trust with regulators, reduced operational overhead, real-time verification capabilities, and a resilient defense against fraud or record tampering. By adopting a secure, transparent, and auditable compliance pipeline, global enterprises can build workforce ecosystems that are not only regulatory-compliant but also future-ready for emerging challenges in cross-border governance and digital workforce management.

Federation Chain for Data Privacy Protection in Industrial Internet of Things: The Perspective From 5G Core Networks

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) faces serious data privacy issues, such as the risk of data leakage during aggregation and transmission. However, existing studies rarely consider data privacy protection from the perspective of 5G core networks (CNs). This article proposes a federation chain-based data privacy protection system for the control plane in 5G CN to facilitate secure and decentralized communications between IIoT devices and other networks components, enhancing data integrity and confidentiality. Using XPRO instrument, 5G CN signaling storm simulation test platform, Free5GC, UERANSIM simulator, and Kali platform, the system simulates and generates realistic control plane data streams in IIoTs. To prevent unauthorized data access, we design an authentication algorithm based on the Bulletproofs zero-knowledge proof technique. Additionally, we implement a data encryption and decryption algorithm based on the Paillier partially homomorphic encryption for user privacy. We design a foundation model-based anomaly flow detection and analysis module to improve the security of the system for anomalous signaling flows. The feasibility and effectiveness of the system are validated on a 5G CN simulation testing platform, and experimental results show that the proposed approach ensures robust and scalable IIoT data privacy protection.

Proofs are powerful tools for integrity and privacy, enabling the verifier to delegate a computation and still verify its correct execution, and enabling the prover to keep the details of the computation private. Both CCP and ZKP can achieve soundness and zero-knowledge but with important differences. CCP relies on hardware trust assumptions, which yield high performance and additional confidentiality protection for the prover but may be unacceptable for some applications. CCP is also often easier to use, notably with existing code, whereas ZKP comes with a large prover overhead that may be unpractical for some applications.

Invariant neural architecture for learning term synthesis in instantiation proving

The development of strong CDCL-based propositional (SAT) solvers has greatly advanced several areas of automated reasoning (AR). One of the directions in AR is therefore to make use of SAT solvers in expressive formalisms such as first-order logic, for which large corpora of general mathematical problems exist today. This is possible due to Herbrand's theorem, which allows reduction of first-order problems to propositional problems by instantiation. The core challenge is synthesizing the appropriate instances from the typically infinite Herbrand universe. In this work, we develop a machine learning system targeting this task, addressing its combinatorial and invariance properties. In particular, we develop a GNN2RNN architecture based on a graph neural network (GNN) that learns from problems and their solutions independently of many symmetries and symbol names (addressing the abundance of Skolems), combined with a recurrent neural network (RNN) that proposes for each clause its instantiations. The architecture is then combined with an efficient ground solver and, starting with zero knowledge, iteratively trained on a large corpus of mathematical problems. We show that the system is capable of solving many problems by such educated guessing, finding proofs for 32.12% of the training set. The final trained system solves 19.74% of the unseen test data on its own. We also observe that the trained system finds solutions that the iProver and CVC5 systems did not find.

VERICONDOR: End-to-End Verifiable Condorcet Voting with support for Strict Preference and Indifference

Condorcet voting is widely regarded as one of the most important voting systems in social choice theory. However, it has seen little adoption in practice, due to complex tallying and the need to break ties when there is a Condorcet cycle. Several online Condorcet voting systems have been developed to perform digital tallying and tie-breaking procedures, but they require voters to completely trust the server. Additionally, many end-to-end (E2E) verifiable e-voting systems require trustworthy authorities to perform complex decryption and tallying operations. We propose VERICONDOR, the first E2E verifibbolable Condorcet e-voting system without tallying authorities. VERICONDOR allows a voter to fully verify the tallying integrity by themselves while providing strong protection of ballot secrecy. We present novel zero-knowledge proof techniques to prove the well-formedness of an encrypted ballot with exceptional efficiency. VERICONDOR supports ranking candidates with strict preference, as well as indifference. The computational cost is exceptionally efficient for strict preferences at \(\mathcal{O}(n^{2})\) per ballot for \(n\) candidates, while remaining practical for indifferences at \(\mathcal{O}(n^{3})\) . In the case of ties, we show how to apply known Condorcet methods to break them in a publicly verifiable manner. Finally, we present a proof of concept implementation and evaluate its performance.

Group Signatures with Designated Traceability over Openers' Attributes from Symmetric-Key Primitives

A group signature scheme in which signers are able to designate openers by specifying access structures over openers' attributes was introduced at CANDAR 2021, which is called GSdT. In this paper, we present a construction of GSdT from only symmetric-key primitives; pseudorandom functions, hash functions and commitments. Due to the features, our GSdT is expected to be secure against computational power of quantum computers. We first introduce syntax and security definitions in the static group model. Then, in our construction, the key ingredient is a non-interactive zero-knowledge proof of knowledge system that is constructed from the primitives in the “MPC-in-the-head” paradigm, owing the technique that was developed by Katz, Kolesnikov and Wang (ACM-CCS 2018). Our approach starts with their group signature scheme, but non-trivially extends the Merkle tree so that signers can treat (all-AND) boolean formulas as the access structures. According to our estimation, the signing time is less than 3.0 sec and the signature size is less than 0.5 MB in a scenario that the numbers of group members and attributes are 27and 23, respectively, and security to be attained is 128 bit quantum security.

PrVFL: Pruning-Aware Verifiable Federated Learning for Heterogeneous Edge Computing

In the era emphasizing the privacy of personal data, verifiable federated learning has garnered significant attention as a machine learning approach to safeguard user privacy while simultaneously validating aggregated result. However, there are some unresolved issues when deploying verifiable federated learning in edge computing. Due to the constraint resources, edge computing demands cost saving measurements in model training such as model pruning. Unfortunately, there is currently no protocol capable of enabling users to verify pruning results. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce PrVFL, a verifiable federated learning framework that supports model pruning verification and heterogeneous edge computing. In this scheme, we innovatively utilize zero-knowledge range proof protocol to achieve pruning result verification. Additionally, we first propose a heterogeneous delayed verification scheme supporting the validation of aggregated result for pruned heterogeneous edge models. Addressing the prevalent scenario of performance-heterogeneous edge clients, our scheme empowers each edge user to autonomously choose the desired pruning ratio for each training round based on their specific performance. By employing a global residual model, we ensure that every parameter has an opportunity for training. The extensive experimental results demonstrate the practical performance of our proposed scheme.

Decentralized Information Resource Management: Leveraging Blockchain for Sustainable Development and Security

The present study offers a comprehensive examination of blockchain technology as a revolutionary instrument to foster progress across multiple industries, such as finance, healthcare, and agriculture. The analysis of data resource management, the decentralized structure of blockchain, and its function in enhancing transaction security and transparency is the goal of the study. The potential of blockchain technology to tackle significant sustainability issues like data exchange integrity, on-chain transmission, and resource management capabilities is examined. Here, we present a novel blockchain model that addresses integration issues by emphasizing security, privacy, and compatibility while demonstrating how blockchain technology can help realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. This architecture is constructed in layers to increase security and anonymity. It incorporates elements of both public and private blockchains along with state-of-the-art cryptographic techniques like multi-party computing and zero-knowledge proof. It analyzes the adoption barriers of blockchain, such as scalability, regulatory compliance, and compatibility with existing systems, critically and provides solutions and recommendations for further research. This paper presents findings from a number of studies and theoretical analyses to show that blockchain can encourage social inclusion, a circular economy, and cultural inquiry by offering a comprehensive outline of the possibilities and constraints.

The challenge we address in this thesis is to design a peer-to-peer threshold-based group key generation protocol where there is no centralized authority and peers do not learn anything about the generated key other than their shares albeit they are involved in the key generation. To address this challenge, we propose a password-authenticated threshold-based group key agreement protocol that resembles secret sharing. However, the construction of our proposal is the opposite. In legacy secret-sharing schemes, a trusted third party shares a secret value that it initially knows. In our proposal, principals collaborate to create shares without the knowledge of the constructed group key in a peer-to-peer fashion. We employ zero-knowledge protocols for verifying the authenticity of principals' contributions to the protocol. Zero-knowledge proofs help principals verify the veracity of data without sharing the data. In addition to the threshold-based group key agreement protocol, we also propose a novel zero-knowledge proof scheme based on equal partition problems on groups and prove that this novel zero-knowledge proof scheme is secure. We present the security and performance analysis of the proposed protocols.

Tatami Printer: Physical ZKPs for Tatami Puzzles

Tatami puzzles are pencil puzzles with an objective to partition a rectangular grid into rectangular regions such that no four regions share a corner point, as well as satisfying other constraints. In this paper, we develop a physical card-based protocol called Tatami printer that can help verify solutions of Tatami puzzles. We then use the Tatami printer to construct zero-knowledge proof protocols for two such puzzles: Tatamibari and Square Jam. These protocols enable a prover to show a verifier the existence of the puzzles' solutions without revealing them.

Falic: An FPGA-Based Multi-Scalar Multiplication Accelerator for Zero-Knowledge Proof

In this paper, we propose Falic, a novel FPGA-based accelerator to accelerate multi-scalar multiplication (MSM), the most time-consuming phase of zk-SNARK proof generation. Falic innovates three techniques. First, it leverages globally asynchronous locally synchronous (GALS) strategy to build multiple small and lightweight MSM cores to parallelize the independent inner product computation on different portions of the scalar vector and point vector. Second, each MSM core contains just one large-integer modular multiplier (LIMM) that is multiplexed to perform the point additions (PADDs) generated during MSM. We strike a balance between the throughput and hardware cost by batching the appropriate number of PADDs and selecting the computation graph of PADD with proper parallelism degree. Finally, the performance is further improved by a simple cache structure that enables the computation reuse. We implement Falic on two different FPGAs with different hardware resources, i.e., the Xilinx U200 and Xilinx U250. Compared to the prior FPGA-based accelerator, Falic improves the MSM throughput by$3.9\boldsymbol{\times}$. Experimental results also show that Falic achieves a throughput speedup of up to$1.62\boldsymbol{\times}$and saves as much as$8.5\boldsymbol{\times}$energy compared to an RTX 2080Ti GPU.

Evaluating Blockchain's Potential for Secure and Effective Digital Identity Management

The conventional core digital identity management structure (DIMS) is vulnerable to hazards like disintegrated identity, single point of breakdown, inner assaults, and security leaks. Arising blockchain innovation enables DIMSs to be executed in it, which helps many of the issues triggered via the core 3rd party, yet its built-in openness and absence of security constitute significant challenges to DIMSs. In this context, this study uses smart contracts as well as zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) techniques to enhance the present assert identity framework on the blockchain to achieve identity unlink ability, successfully preventing the disclosure of characteristic possession. In addition, we apply BZDIMS, a framework model that enables users to specifically open up their control of characteristics to service providers to safeguard users’ conduct security. When contrasted with the previous framework, our approach accomplishes successful characteristic security safeguarding and a broader usage opportunity based on performance and security assessment.
