BSM-6G: Blockchain-Based Dynamic Spectrum Management for 6G Networks: Addressing Interoperability and Scalability

David Cuellar, Muntadher Sallal, Christopher B. Williams

The radio frequency spectrum serves as a fundamental resource for wireless communication, encompassing various frequency bands allocated for diverse services and applications. Dynamic spectrum management (DSM) is essential to optimise the utilisation of this limited and valuable natural resource, with the aim of improving performance and adapting to changing wireless communication demands. Traditional static spectrum allocation methods have shown inefficiencies, leading to spectrum scarcity and under-utilisation. To address these challenges, the integration of blockchain and Cognitive Radio (CR) technologies has emerged as a promising approach. Blockchain, with its decentralised and secure attributes, can improve transparency and trust in spectrum allocation processes, while CR enables intelligent spectrum sensing and allocation to maximise utilisation. However, this promising approach comes with its own critical challenges, especially when dealing with the 6th Generation (6G) mobile communication. These challenges are related to the fact that the blockchain ecosystem needs to be interoperable and scalable enough to be compatible with the 6G high-demand and substantial resources. Specifically, integrating blockchain with CR requires efficient interoperability techniques where blockchain can easily and effectively interact with the CR platforms as well as radio spectrum environments. Furthermore, the spectrum management system over 6G networks needs to be designed in a way where massive 6G resources can be accommodated and managed without having any service performance degradation. This paper introduces a novel radio spectrum management model in 6G networks, named as BSM-6G, which integrates blockchain technology with CR where interoperability is preserved and scalability is maximised. Specifically, the proposed BSM-6G model merges blockchain’s transparent record keeping with CR’s intelligent spectrum management capabilities. To overcome the interoperability issue, BSM-6G provides an interoperable blockchain Oracle approach which facilitates the real-time interaction among the blockchain platform, the CR, and any data sources off-chain. This paper details all the technical and procedural challenges when implementing the proposed interoperability Oracle approach. To address the scalability challenge, BSM-6G utilizes the Proof-of-History (PoH) consensus protocol to align with the requirements of DSM in advanced networks like Beyond 5th Generation (B5G) and 6G. Evaluation results indicate that BSM-6G offers viable and less complex blockchain Oracle integration architecture measured by the technical implementation of BSM-6G, as well as low interoperability cost measured by transaction response time and transaction fee cost. Compared to state-of-the-art spectrum-based blockchain systems, BSM-6G shows a high scalable DSM-based blockchain in 6G networks measured by transactions per second (TPS).

Fatemah H. Alghamedy, Nahla El-Haggar, Albandari Alsumayt, Zeyad M. Alfawaer · 8 authors

The rapid advancement of technology has set higher standards for the next generation of wireless communication networks, known as 6G. These networks go beyond the simple task of connecting devices and aim to establish a self-sustaining system within society. One of the key factors in achieving this goal is the integration of AI services and apps through the Internet of Things (IoT), which will be made possible with the support of 6G technology. The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) will play a crucial role in enhancing the protocols, architectures, and operations of 6G networks. To achieve collaborative AI in IoT applications, Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a popular method. FL enables AI training without the need for data sharing, ensuring privacy and security. However, FL also faces challenges, such as the presence of malicious data and the risk of single-point failure. To address these concerns, blockchain technology (BCT) offers a secure and efficient solution. By leveraging blockchain, these issues can be effectively tackled, providing a reliable framework for implementing FL-IoT applications.

Towards a Blockgraph-Based Trustless Authentication Scheme for Future 6G Technology

David Cordova Morales, Thi Mai Trang Nguyen, Guy Pujolle

One of the most important paradigm shifts nowa-days regarding future 6G communication is related, from one side to the desire of bringing services and data as close as possible to the end users, and from another side, to empower the user with control over their data and personal information. In this vision, private 6G networks will shape trusted zones where data center services are placed at the edge of the network. The services will follow a Web3 approach, where decentralization and zero-trust mechanisms are predominant. In this environment, a decen-tralized authentication mechanism is needed. In this paper, we propose a 6G architecture and a blockchain-like authentication scheme based on Verifiable Credentials. Our model uses zero-trust technology for a better and more trusted Internet.

Resource allocation strategy for blockchain-enabled NOMA-based MEC networks

Jianjie Ding, Lina Han, Jie Li, Dajun Zhang

Abstract Blockchain technology is getting more and more attention due to its decentralization, independence and security features. However, in wireless networks it faces a computational challenge: the proof-of-work problem. Mobile edge computing (MEC) leads to a vaild scheme by providing cloud computing capabilities to mobile devices. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) exploits the diversity properties in the power domain to further increase system throughput and spectral efficiency. In this paper, we suggest a new NOMA-based MEC wireless blockchain network to minimize system energy consumption through task offloading decision optimization, user clustering, computing resource and transmit power allocation. In order to effectively figure out this non-convex problem, we first propose a offloading decision and user clustering algorithm, and then propose a computing resource allocation algorithm based on user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Finally, the transmission power can be easily determined. The numerical simulation results verify that the proposed joint optimization algorithm can effectively decrease the system energy consumption.

Exploring 6G Wireless Communication: Application Technologies, Challenges and Future Direction

Robina Rabnawaz, Mohamed Abid, Naeem Aslam, Fatima Khurram Bukhari

The data traffic has increased significantly along with the quick development of smart wireless technologies, and current 5G networks are still not completely prepared to handle future huge data traffic in the areas of services, data transfer, data storage, and processing. 6G is expected to offer very high-level extended 5G capabilities, such as a Tbps data transfer rate and a sub-millisecond response time. The main objective of this study is to be aware of new technologies being enhanced day by day and provide existing research content, issues, and directions for the future regarding 6G wireless networks. Therefore, a systematic literature review of research articles is provided by categorizing the selected studies published between 2019 and 2022 in terms of enabling technologies. First, the researcher discussed the need for 6G by predicting the explosive growth of mobile traffic from 2022 to 2030. Second, 6G requirements, trends, and services are addressed and contrasted with 5G in terms of a group of key performance indicators. Third, conduct a comparative analysis of 6G challenges and gaps, such as security and privacy, the need for a decentralized network, Omnipresent service coverage, and storage efficiency. So, it is essential to develop an accurate, faster, and well-organized system for the 6G wireless network. We have presented an efficient and secure mode R6GS, which combines blockchain and 6G to improve security from the lower to upper layers while also improving storage efficiency. Cybertwin technologies are used at the edge layer of the 6G network in the proposed model R6GS to improve security. The smart contracts, IPFS and Ethereum blockchain are used in the proposed R6GS model to enhance the 6G network's data integrity and data storage. It also processes and stores massive amounts of data at various network layers, which removes the large storage capacity issue of traditional P2P and Client/Server (C/S) networks due to centralized servers in 6G technology. For the performance evaluation, the model is evaluated through expert opinion. Moreover, the proposed R6GS model also improves time efficiency through the edge layer, because if a task is available at the edge layer, there is no need to send a request to the core layer. The server at the edge layer efficiently delivers data to end nodes. Furthermore, a taxonomy is presented in this study. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed methodology worked efficiently.

Rateless Coded Blockchain for Dynamic IoT Networks

Changlin Yang, Alexei Ashikhmin, Xiaodong Wang, Zibin Zheng

A key constraint that limits the implementation of blockchain in Internet of Things (IoT) is its large storage requirement resulting from the fact that each blockchain node has to store the entire blockchain. This increases the burden on blockchain nodes, and increases the communication overhead for new nodes joining the network since they have to copy the entire blockchain. In order to reduce storage requirements without compromising on system security and integrity, coded blockchains, based on error correcting codes with fixed rates and lengths, have been recently proposed. This approach, however, does not fit well with dynamic IoT networks in which nodes actively leave and join. In such dynamic blockchains, the existing coded blockchain approaches lead to high communication overheads for new joining nodes and may have high decoding failure probability. This paper proposes a rateless coded blockchain with coding parameters adjusted to network conditions. Our goals are to minimize both the storage requirement at each blockchain node and the communication overhead for each new joining node, subject to a target decoding failure probability. We evaluate the proposed scheme in the context of real-world Bitcoin blockchain and show that both storage and communication overhead are reduced by 99.6\% with a maximum $10^{-12}$ decoding failure probability.

Retracted: Distributed AI and Blockchain for 6G-Assisted Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks: Challenges and Future Directions

Prabhat Kumar, Randhir Kumar, A.K.M. Najmul Islam, Sahil Garg · 6 authors

The integration of Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (TNTNs) with the sixth-generation (6G) wireless ecosystem will revolutionize the futuristic communication networks by enabling comprehensive interconnection and quality of service. However, such an integrated network will raise serious security and privacy issues due to the insecure communication among untrusted participating entities over an open unsecured public channel. As a result, the entire ecosystem can be accessed by both legitimate users and adversaries. Distributed AI when integrated with blockchain has a great potential to provide a feasible alternative to solve the security and privacy issues of 6G-assisted TNTNs. As a case study, a distributed AI is first adopted to cooperatively participate in the training process of a global model directly on devices. This approach ensures privacy and security of user data, and also confirms that only valid data is used by smart contracts to execute consensus mechanism. The multiple parallel blockchain are employed to securely and efficiently manage, and share data at each layer of 6G-assisted TNTNs. The efficiency of the proposed framework is demonstrated by numerical findings. Finally, prospective open research issues in employing distributed AI and blockchain for 6G-assisted TNTNs are highlighted.

Energy-Efficient Blockchain-enabled User-Centric Mobile Edge Computing

Langtian Qin, Hancheng Lu, Yuang Chen, Zhuojia Gu · 6 authors

In the traditional mobile edge computing (MEC) system, the availability of MEC services is greatly limited for the edge users of the cell due to serious signal attenuation and inter-cell interference. User-centric MEC (UC-MEC) can be seen as a promising solution to address this issue. In UC-MEC, each user is served by a dedicated access point (AP) cluster enabled with MEC capability instead of a single MEC server, however, at the expense of more energy consumption and greater privacy risks. To achieve efficient and reliable resource utilization with user-centric services, we propose an energy-efficient blockchain-enabled UC-MEC system where blockchain operations and resource optimization are jointly performed. Firstly, we design a resource-aware, reliable, replicated, redundant, and fault-tolerant (R-RAFT) consensus mechanism to implement secure and reliable resource trading. Then, an optimization framework based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to minimize the total energy consumed by wireless transmission, consensus, and task computing, where AP clustering, computing resource allocation, and bandwidth allocation are jointly considered. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed UC-MEC system over reference schemes, with at most 33.96% reduction in the total delay and 48.77% reduction in the total energy consumption.

Blockchain-Based Lightweight Multifactor Authentication for Cell-Free in Ultra-Dense 6G-Based (6-CMAS) Cellular Network

Adnan Shahid Khan, Mohd Izzat Bin Yahya, Kartinah Zen, Johari Abdullah · 8 authors

Cell-Free mMIMO is a part of technology that will be integrated with future 6G ultra-dense cellular networks to ensure unlimited wireless connectivity and ubiquitous latency-sensitive services. Cell-Free gained researchers’ interest as it offers ubiquitous communication with large bandwidth, high throughput, high data transmission, and greater signal gain. Cell-Free eliminates the idea of cell boundary in cellular communication that reduces frequent handover and inter-cell interference issues. However, the effectiveness of the current authentication protocol could become a serious issue due to the dynamic nature of Cell-Free in densely distributed, high number of users, high mobility, and frequent data exchange. Secondly, secure communication may be achieved in such a dynamic environment at the expense of high authentication overhead, high communication and computational costs. To address the above security challenges, we proposed a lightweight multifactor mutual authentication protocol for Cell-Free communication using ECC-based Deffie Hellman (ECDH). This scheme utilizes timestamping, one-way hash function, Blind-Fold Challenge scheme with public key infrastructure. The proposed cryptosystem integrates with blockchain technology using proof of staked (POS) as a consensus mechanism to ensure integrity, non-repudiation and traceability. The proposed scheme can enforce the mitigation of several major security attacks on communication links such as spoofing attacks, eavesdropping, user location privacy issues, replay attacks, denial of service attacks, and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, which is one of the significant features of the scheme. Furthermore, this scheme contributes to reducing authentication, communication, and computational overheads with an average of 32.8%, 52.4% and 53.2% better performance respectively as compared baseline authentication protocols.

Blockchain and 6G-Enabled IoT

Houshyar Honar Pajooh, Serge Demidenko, Saad Aslam, Muhammad Harris

Ubiquitous computing turns into a reality with the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) adopted to connect massive numbers of smart and autonomous devices for various applications. 6G-enabled IoT technology provides a platform for information collection and processing at high speed and with low latency. However, there are still issues that need to be addressed in an extended connectivity environment, particularly the security and privacy domain challenges. In addition, the traditional centralized architecture is often unable to address problems associated with access control management, interoperability of different devices, the possible existence of a single point of failure, and extensive computational overhead. Considering the evolution of decentralized access control mechanisms, it is necessary to provide robust security and privacy in various IoT-enabled industrial applications. The emergence of blockchain technology has changed the way information is shared. Blockchain can establish trust in a secure and distributed platform while eliminating the need for third-party authorities. We believe the coalition of 6G-enabled IoT and blockchain can potentially address many problems. This paper is dedicated to discussing the advantages, challenges, and future research directions of integrating 6G-enabled IoT and blockchain technology for various applications such as smart homes, smart cities, healthcare, supply chain, vehicle automation, etc.

Blockchain-Assisted Intelligent Symbiotic Radio in Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks

Runze Cheng, Yao Sun, Lina Mohjazi, Ying‐Chang Liang · 5 authors

In a space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN), managing resources for the growing number of highly-dynamic and heterogeneous radios is a challenging task. Symbiotic communication (SC) is a novel paradigm, which leverages the analogy of the natural ecosystem in biology to create a radio ecosystem in wireless networks that achieves cooperative service exchange and resource sharing, i.e., service/resource trading, among numerous radios. As a result, the potential of symbiotic communication can be exploited to enhance resource management in SAGIN. Despite the fact that different radio resource bottlenecks can complement each other via symbiotic relationships, unreliable information sharing among heterogeneous radios and multi-dimensional resources managing under diverse service requests impose critical challenges on trusted trading and intelligent decision-making. In this article, we propose a secure and smart symbiotic SAGIN (S^4) framework by using blockchain for ensuring trusted trading among heterogeneous radios and machine learning (ML) for guiding complex service/resource trading. A case study demonstrates that our proposed S^4 framework provides better service with rational resource management when compared with existing schemes. Finally, we discuss several potential research directions for future symbiotic SAGIN.

Mobile Edge Computing, Metaverse, 6G Wireless Communications, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain: Survey and Their Convergence

Yitong Wang, Jun Zhao

With the advances of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G/6G wireless communications, the paradigms of mobile computing have developed dramatically in recent years, from centralized mobile cloud computing to distributed fog computing and mobile edge computing (MEC). MEC pushes compute-intensive assignments to the edge of the network and brings resources as close to the endpoints as possible, addressing the shortcomings of mobile devices with regard to storage space, resource optimisation, computational performance and efficiency. Compared to cloud computing, as the distributed and closer infrastructure, the convergence of MEC with other emerging technologies, including the Metaverse, 6G wireless communications, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain, also solves the problems of network resource allocation, more network load as well as latency requirements. Accordingly, this paper investigates the computational paradigms used to meet the stringent requirements of modern applications. The application scenarios of MEC in mobile augmented reality (MAR) are provided. Furthermore, this survey presents the motivation of MEC-based Metaverse and introduces the applications of MEC to the Metaverse. Particular emphasis is given on a set of technical fusions mentioned above, e.g., 6G with MEC paradigm, MEC strengthened by blockchain, etc.

Deep Q-Learning Technique for Offloading Offline/Online Computation in Blockchain-Enabled Green IoT-Edge Scenarios

Arash Heidari, Mohammad Ali Jabraeil Jamali, Nima Jafari Navimipour, Shahin Akbarpour

The number of Internet of Things (IoT)-related innovations has recently increased exponentially, with numerous IoT objects being invented one after the other. Where and how many resources can be transferred to carry out tasks or applications is known as computation offloading. Transferring resource-intensive computational tasks to a different external device in the network, such as a cloud, fog, or edge platform, is the strategy used in the IoT environment. Besides, offloading is one of the key technological enablers of the IoT, as it helps overcome the resource limitations of individual objects. One of the major shortcomings of previous research is the lack of an integrated offloading framework that can operate in an offline/online environment while preserving security. This paper offers a new deep Q-learning approach to address the IoT-edge offloading enabled blockchain problem using the Markov Decision Process (MDP). There is a substantial gap in the secure online/offline offloading systems in terms of security, and no work has been published in this arena thus far. This system can be used online and offline while maintaining privacy and security. The proposed method employs the Post Decision State (PDS) mechanism in online mode. Additionally, we integrate edge/cloud platforms into IoT blockchain-enabled networks to encourage the computational potential of IoT devices. This system can enable safe and secure cloud/edge/IoT offloading by employing blockchain. In this system, the master controller, offloading decision, block size, and processing nodes may be dynamically chosen and changed to reduce device energy consumption and cost. TensorFlow and Cooja’s simulation results demonstrated that the method could dramatically boost system efficiency relative to existing schemes. The findings showed that the method beats four benchmarks in terms of cost by 6.6%, computational overhead by 7.1%, energy use by 7.9%, task failure rate by 6.2%, and latency by 5.5% on average.

BENS−B5G: Blockchain-Enabled Network Slicing in 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) Networks

Saurabh Singh, C. Rajesh Babu, Kadiyala Ramana, In-Ho Ra · 5 authors

Fifth-generation (5G) technology is anticipated to allow a slew of novel applications across a variety of industries. The wireless communication of the 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) networks will accommodate a wide variety of services and user expectations, including intense end-user connectivity, sub-1 ms delay, and a transmission rate of 100 Gbps. Network slicing is envisioned as an appropriate technique that can meet these disparate requirements. The intrinsic qualities of a blockchain, which has lately acquired prominence, mean that it is critical for the 5G network and B5G networks. In particular, the incorporation of blockchain technology into B5G enables the network to effectively monitor and control resource utilization and sharing. Using blockchain technology, a network-slicing architecture referred to as the Blockchain Consensus Framework is introduced that allows resource providers to dynamically contract resources, especially the radio access network (RAN) schedule, to guarantee that their end-to-end services are effortlessly executed. The core of our methodology is comprehensive service procurement, which offers the fine-grained adaptive allocation of resources through a blockchain-based consensus mechanism. Our objective is to have Primary User-Secondary User (PU-SU) interactions with a variety of services, while minimizing the operation and maintenance costs of the 5G service providers. A Blockchain-Enabled Network Slicing Model (BENS), which is a learning-based algorithm, is incorporated to handle the spectrum resource allocation in a sophisticate manner. The performance and inferences of the proposed work are analyzed in detail.

Blockchain‐Empowered Dynamic Spectrum Management for Space‐Air‐Ground Integrated Network

Zuguang LI, Wei Wang, Jia Guo, Youwen Zhu · 6 authors

Space-air-ground integrated network is capable of providing seamless and ubiquitous services to cater for the increasing wireless communication demands of emerging applications. However, how to efficiently manage the heterogeneous resources and protect the privacy of connected devices is a very challenging issue, especially under the highly dynamic network topology and multiple trustless network operators. In this paper, we investigate blockchain-empowered dynamic spectrum management by reaping the advantages of blockchain and software defined network (SDN), where operators are incentive to share their resources in a common resourced pool. We first propose a blockchain enabled spectrum management framework for space-air-ground integrated network, with inter-slice spectrum sharing and intra-slice spectrum allocation. Specifically, the inter-slice spectrum sharing is realized through a consortium blockchain formed by the upper-tier SDN controllers, and then a graph coloring based channel assignment algorithm is proposed to manage the intra-slice spectrum assignment. A bilateral confirmation protocol and a consensus mechanism are also proposed for the consortium blockchain. The simulation results prove that our proposed consensus algorithm takes less time than practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm to reach a consensus, and the proposed channel assignment algorithm significantly improves the spectrum utilization and outperforms the baseline algorithm in both simulation and real-world scenarios.

Security and QoS issues in blockchain enabled next-generation smart logistic networks: A tutorial

Anjali Vaghani, Keshav Sood, Shui Yu

The blockchain-enabled smart logistics market is expected to grow worth USD 1620 billion and at a compound annual growth rate of 62.4%. Smart logistics ensures intelligence infrastructure, logistics automation, real-time analysis of supply chain data synchronization of the logistics process, cost transparency, unbroken shipment tracking all the way down to the transportation route, etc. In the smart logistics domain, significant advancement and growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) sensors are evident. However, the connectivity of IoT systems, including Tactile Internet, without proper safeguards creates vulnerabilities that can still be deliberately or inadvertently cause disruption. In view of this, we primarily notice two key issues. Firstly, the logistics domain can be compromised by a variety of natural or man-made activities, which eventually affect the overall network security. Secondly, there are thousands of entities in the supply chain network that use extensive machine-learning algorithms in many scenarios, and they require high-power computational resources. From these two challenges, we note that the first concern can be addressed by adding blockchain to IoT logistic networks. The second issue can be addressed using 6G. This will support 1-μs latency communications, support seamless computing at the edges of networks, and autonomously predict the best optimal location for edge computing. Motivated by this, we have highlighted motivational examples to show the necessity to integrate 6G and blockchain in smart logistic networks. Then, we have proposed a 6G and blockchain-enabled smart logistic high-level framework. We have presented the key intrinsic issues of this framework mainly from the security and resource management context. In this paper, recent state-of-the-art advances in blockchain enabled next-generation smart logistic networks are analyzed. We have also examined why 6G and not 5G would be compatible with the smart network. We have introduced five different use cases of blockchain technology in smart logistics. Later, this paper discusses some important concerns that blockchain in smart logistics might face. We have also provided potential solutions to tackle these concerns.

Energy-Efficient and Physical Layer Secure Computation Offloading in Blockchain-Empowered Internet of Things

Yiliang Liu, Zhou Su, Yuntao Wang

This article investigates computation offloading in blockchain-empowered Internet of Things (IoT), where the task data uploading link from sensors to a base station (BS) is protected by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted physical-layer security (PLS). After receiving task data, the BS allocates computational resources provided by mobile-edge computing (MEC) servers to help sensors perform tasks. Existing blockchain-based computation offloading schemes usually focus on network performance improvements, such as energy consumption minimization (ECM) or latency minimization, and neglect the Gas fee for computation offloading, resulting in the dissatisfaction of high Gas providers. Also, the secrecy rate during the data uploading process cannot be measured by a steady value because of the time-varying characteristics of IRS-based wireless channels, thereby computational resources allocation with a secrecy rate measured before data uploading is inappropriate. In this article, we design a Gas-oriented computation offloading scheme that guarantees a low degree of dissatisfaction of sensors, while reducing energy consumption. Also, we deduce the ergodic secrecy rate of IRS-assisted PLS transmission that can represent the global secrecy performance to allocate computational resources. The simulations show that the proposed scheme has lower energy consumption compared to existing schemes and ensures that the node paying higher Gas gets stronger computational resources.

After implementing 5G technology, academia and industry started researching 6th generation wireless network technology (6G). 6G is expected to be implemented around the year 2030. It will offer a significant experience for everyone by enabling hyper-connectivity between people and everything. In addition, it is expected to extend mobile communication possibilities where earlier generations could not have developed. Several potential technologies are predicted to serve as the foundation of 6G networks. These include upcoming and current technologies such as post-quantum cryptography, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), enhanced edge computing, molecular communication, THz, visible light communication (VLC), and distributed ledger (DL) technologies such as blockchain. From a security and privacy perspective, these developments need a reconsideration of prior security traditional methods. New novel authentication, encryption, access control, communication, and malicious activity detection must satisfy the higher significant requirements of future networks. In addition, new security approaches are necessary to ensure trustworthiness and privacy. This paper provides insights into the critical problems and difficulties related to the security, privacy, and trust issues of 6G networks. Moreover, the standard technologies and security challenges per each technology are clarified. This paper introduces the 6G security architecture and improvements over the 5G architecture. We also introduce the security issues and challenges of the 6G physical layer. In addition, the AI/ML layers and the proposed security solution in each layer are studied. The paper summarizes the security evolution in legacy mobile networks and concludes with their security problems and the most essential 6G application services and their security requirements. Finally, this paper provides a complete discussion of 6G networks' trustworthiness and solutions.

Blockchain-Based Federated Learning in UAVs Beyond 5G Networks: A Solution Taxonomy and Future Directions

Deepti Saraswat, Ashwin Verma, Pronaya Bhattacharya, Sudeep Tanwar · 7 authors

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained attention due to increased use-cases in healthcare, monitoring, surveillance, and logistics operations. UAVs mainly communicate with mobile base stations, ground stations (GS), or networked peer UAVs, known as UAV swarms. UAVs communicate with GS, or UAV swarms, over wireless channels to support mission-critical operations. Communication latency, bandwidth, and precision are of prime importance in such operations. With the rise of data-driven applications, fifth-generation (5G) networks would face bottlenecks to communicate at near-real-time, at low latency and improved coverage. Thus, researchers have shifted towards network designs that incorporate beyond 5G (B5G) networks for UAV designs. However, UAVs are resource-constrained, with limited power and battery, and thus centralized cloud-centric models are not suitable. Moreover, as exchanged data is through open channels, privacy and security issues exist. Federated learning (FL) allows data to be trained on local nodes, preserving privacy and improving network communication. However, sharing of local updates is required through a trusted consensus mechanism. Thus, blockchain (BC)-based FL schemes for UAVs allow trusted exchange of FL updates among UAV swarms and GS. To date, limited research has been carried out on the integration of BC and FL in UAV management. The proposed survey addresses the gap and presents a solution taxonomy of BC-based FL in UAVs for B5G networks due to the open problem. This paper presents a reference architecture and compares its potential benefits over traditional BC-based UAV networks. Open issues and challenges are discussed, with possible future directions. Finally, a logistics case study of BC-based FL-oriented UAVs in 6G networks is presented. The survey aims to aid researchers in developing potential UAV solutions with the key integrating principles over a diverse set of application verticals.
