BROKERS OF THE METAVERSE: HOW A WEB3 PLAY-TO-EARN GAMING GUILD ACTS AS CULTURAL MEDIATOR ON TWITTER

Violeta Camarasa San Juan, Dmitry Kuznetsov

Play-to-earn (P2E) games targeting users unfamiliar with cryptocurrencies are playing a key role within the industries known as blockchain, crypto or Web3. P2E gaming guilds (Elliott, 2021) are emerging as essential intermediaries bridging Web2 and Web3 ecosystems. Drawing from social network theory’s study of brokerage motivations, this paper examines the structure and communication practices of a P2E guild, Yield Guild Games (YGG) on Twitter. Through a computational analysis of YGG’s presence on Twitter, the paper compares two mention networks corresponding to a period of optimism, and a period of crisis. We used network analysis to examine the structure of YGG communication on Twitter (Rathnayake, 2023), analysed tweets using BERTopic topic modeling (Grootendorst, 2022), and extracted links to determine what information is shared within the network (Hoyng, 2023). The results demonstrate YGG’s role as a “cultural broker” (Foster & Ocejo, 2015) promoting the adoption of blockchain technologies, such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and ideologies (Swartz, 2017), ascribing legitimacy and value to particular actors and products in the Web3 ecosystem. The topic lists highlight prominent communication practices related to community building, such as AMA (ask me anything) sessions and airdrops.

Secure Sharing And Monitoring Of Patient Data Through A Blockchain-Based İot Healthcare Platform

Galal Abdulraheem Alı Ahmed, Danışman: Prof.Dr.

Across-Platform Detection of Malicious Cryptocurrency Accounts via Interaction Feature Learning

Zheng Che, Meng Shen, Zhehui Tan, Hanbiao Du · 9 authors

With the rapid evolution of Web3.0, cryptocurrency has become a cornerstone of decentralized finance. While these digital assets enable efficient and borderless financial transactions, their pseudonymous nature has also attracted malicious activities such as money laundering, fraud, and other financial crimes. Effective detection of malicious accounts is crucial to maintaining the security and integrity of the Web 3.0 ecosystem. Existing malicious account detection methods rely on large amounts of labeled data and suffer from low generalization. Label-efficient and generalizable malicious account detection remains a challenging task. In this paper, we propose ShadowEyes, a framework for detecting malicious accounts by leveraging interaction feature learning with only a small labeled dataset. Specifically, We first propose a generalized account representation named TxGraph, which captures the universal interaction features of Ethereum and Bitcoin. Then we carefully design an account representation augmentation method tailored to simulate the evolution of malicious accounts to generate positive pairs. We conduct extensive experiments using public datasets to evaluate the performance of ShadowEyes. The results demonstrate that it outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in four typical scenarios. Specifically, in the scenario of acrossplatform malicious account detection, ShadowEyes maintains an F1 score of around 90%, which is 10% higher than the SOTA method. In the zero-shot learning scenario, it can achieve an F1 score of 79.56% for detecting gambling accounts, surpassing the SOTA method by 10.44%.

InstaRand: Instantly Available and Instantly Verifiable On-chain Randomness.

Jacob Gorman, Lucjan Hanzlik, Aniket Kate, Pratyay Mukherjee · 6 authors

Web3 applications, such as on-chain gaming, require unbiased and publicly verifiable randomness that can be obtained quickly and cost-effectively whenever needed. Existing services, such as those based on Verifiable Random Functions (VRF), incur network delays and high fees due to their highly interactive nature. FlexiRand [CCS 2023] addressed these problems by hiding the output of the VRF and using that as a seed to derive many randomnesses locally. These randomnesses are instantly available for usage. However, these randomnesses can not be verified independently (or instantly) without disclosing the seed, leaving scope for malicious actors to cheat. To solve this problem, we introduce a new notion, called instantly-verifiable VRF (iVRF), which enables the generation of many randomnesses from one VRF output seed, such that each of them is verifiable independently - this enables the solution to generate randomnesses, such that they are and also . To instantiate we propose a generic construction called InstaRand - it combines any (possibly distributed) VRF at the server's end with another VRF at the client's end to construct an iVRF. Our specific instantiation uses the BLS-based GLOW-DVRF [Euro S&P 2021] at the server's end and the DDH-based VRF of Goldberg et al. [RFC 2023] at the client's end. We use the universal composability framework to analyze the security. Moreover, due to its generality, InstaRand can be instantiated with any post-quantum secure VRF to yield a post-quantum secure iVRF. Our experiments demonstrate that our instantiation of InstaRand is . The client incurs a cost to generate the seed (server's VRF output) by querying the GLOW-dVRF servers once. Once the seed is set up, the client locally generates the pseudorandom value on demand in , avoiding the client-server round-trip delay. Each value can be independently verified in . This yields a improvement in terms of output generation and improvement in verification cost over existing solutions.

Regulatory Equivalence in Blockchain Systems: The Role of Public Values and Legitimacy

Primavera De Filippi, Morshed Mannan

Abstract In this chapter, we develop the concept of ‘regulatory equivalence’. As opposed to functional equivalence, used to extend the scope of existing legal frameworks to new technological arrangements, regulatory equivalence refers to the use of technological guarantees to serve the same purpose as traditional legal formalities. This approach goes beyond the use of technology to execute certain legal formalities, but involves analysis of the equivalence between the values undergirding legal rules and the affordances of technological artifacts. This chapter draws on the distinct properties of blockchain-based systems, such as notarization systems, Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO)s, and privacy pools, to demonstrate the opportunities and challenges they present to establishing regulatory equivalence. Public actors, however, are hesitant to recognize regulatory equivalence, due to competing perceptions of legitimate governance between participants within these systems and external actors such as regulators. We explore this tension before concluding that this challenge can be overcome through co-regulatory engagement between public authorities and actors within blockchain-based systems, and public authorities more explicitly stating the values they seek to promote within blockchain-based systems.

Integration of Tokenomics and Multifactor Assessment of Business Project Value in the DeFi Sector

Pavlo V. Ivakhno, Oleksandr Manoylenko

The article addresses the scientific problem of forming an efficient approach to assessing the market value of business projects in the rapidly evolving area of decentralized finance (DeFi) within the digital economy. The article analyzes the limitations of applying traditional financial evaluation methods, specifically discounted cash flow (DCF) models and economic value added (EVA), which lose their relevance in the DeFi context due to the instability of cash flows, absence of centralized reporting, and the specific profitability structure of tokenized assets. In order to overcome the mentioned limitations in the study, a new multifactor model has been proposed, which combines classical financial indicators with key tokenomic metrics: total value locked (TVL), the utility function of the token in governance, liquidity mining incentives, as well as the distribution of tokens over time (vesting schedules). An empirical validation of the model’s efficiency was conducted through the construction of a multiple linear regression based on data from 20 leading DeFi projects for the years 2023–2024. The results obtained demonstrated a high statistical significance of the included tokenomic variables (p < 0.01) and a high explanatory power of the model (R? = 0.92), confirming its efficiency for predicting the market capitalization of digital assets. It is demonstrated that tokenomic characteristics have a decisive impact on the value of DeFi projects, while traditional indicators (DCF, EVA) are secondary or insignificant due to the changing nature of value in the Web3 economy. The proposed model enables the development of a sound methodology for the strategic analysis of investment attractiveness of decentralized platforms, particularly from the perspective of DAO organizations, venture funds, and analytical agencies.

The Possibilities and Challenges of Blockchain Technology Reshaping the E-Commerce Industry

In nearly two decades of rapid development, the e-commerce industry’s centralized platform-centered operation model has improved transaction efficiency, but it has also brought about problems such as data monopoly, trust crisis and inefficient cross-border payments. The decentralization, transparency and automatic execution characteristics of blockchain technology provide a new solution for the e-commerce industry. This paper explores how blockchain can improve the current e-commerce ecosystem through an in-depth analysis of its core technologies, including decentralized ledgers, smart contracts and Token Economy models. However, despite the potential advantages of blockchain, its large-scale application in e-commerce still faces many challenges, such as technical performance limitations, regulatory uncertainties, and business model sustainability. Based on summarizing the existing studies and case studies, this paper proposes a progressive integration path and suggests constructing an adaptive framework in terms of technological optimization, policy support and user education, so as to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the development of e-commerce in the Web3 era.

Regenerative Finance : a new proposal to address sustainability

Hackman, Yamilin

Regenerative Finance emerged in response to the Great Recession of 2007-2008 and the subsequent financial crisis, which exposed the erosion of the financial system. Its foundation is on Regenerative Economics, proposing a new economic system and framework for a regenerative civilisation that will reshape the future of Finance. It contrasts with various other propositions, such as ESG, DEI, and Green Finance. This thesis aims to define Regenerative Finance and how it differs from traditional extractive Finance and investment business models. How “ReFi” challenges the habitual mindset behind the Financial industry, which prioritises maximising profits at the expense of communities, living ecosystems, and the environment, generating “a triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss”. How it plans to transform the financial system, addressing inequality, and setting forth regeneration. The study employed secondary data collection gathered from official sources, including the UNFCCC. The presentation is descriptive and employs thematic analysis, identifying core themes typical of social science projects. This research examines the technology substructure, which serves as an intersection between Web3, characterised by DAOs, blockchain, Decentralised Finance (DeFi), Crypto, NFTs, and tokenisation as its tools for regeneration. It explores all their technical specifications, the principles behind these innovations, implementation, and challenges. Additionally, there are Natural Capital-Backed Assets (VCM, Biochar, etc.), which function as a novel solution to preserve natural resources, employing technologies such as Tokenization. It encompasses socio-economic and political aspects, examples of ongoing ReFi projects, criticism, challenges, and/or fraud that ReFi may encounter in practice, beyond the theoretical.

Decentralized Exchanges (Dexs) And Sustainable Entrepreneurship In India: Opportunities, Challenges, And Policy Implications

M. Jayanthi Kiruthika Kv

The financial market has gone into paradigm shift from strict, highly regulated centralized system to open, easily accessible and permission less infrastructure for the last decades. These are powered by blockchain technologies. Decentralize Exchange is the primary source for this transformation which enables the direct person to person trading without intermediaries. DEXs also facilitates innovative entrepreneurial models in the Web3 which is an internet-built block chain technology where information is stored across multiple computers rather than central servers that create peer to peer communication without intermediaries. It also helps in the DeFi ecosystem, which is an emerging financial system using blockchain and crypto currencies to enable direct transactions without intermediaries. DEXs offer wide opportunities for SMEs, Startups, and marginalized communities in India. Despite its potential financial inclusion, sustainable growth and capital democratization still remain challenges in adoption of technology due to regulatory ambiguity, socio cultural barriers and complexity of technology. This paper examines the potential of Decentralized Exchange in fostering inclusive digital entrepreneurship in India. This study also analyzes the Tamil Nadu readiness in adopting blockchain technology. It develops a conceptual framework of linking DEX adoption, sustainability, and socio-economic outcomes. The study includes the theories like the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Institutional Theory (IT), and Diffusion of innovation (DOF) and proposes testable hypothesis and proposition to guide empirical research and policy formulation.

Design paradigms and efficiency trade-offs in blockchain frameworks: A comprehensive comparative

Ram Kumar Solanki, Ganesh R. Pathak, Amit Gadekar, Abhishek Dhore · 6 authors

The spread of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) beyond its roots in cryptocurrency has led to a proliferation of blockchain frameworks with differing architectural philosophies, performance attributes, and applications in mind. This non-uniformity poses a significant problem for enterprises and developers who aim to find the best platform that suits them. The paper is based on a rigorous, multi-dimensional comparison of the four most crucial blockchain frameworks that encompass the breadth of the current DLT: Ethereum as an early smart contracts and decentralized application pioneer, Hyperledger Fabric for permissioned blocks designed to work in enterprise consortia, R3 Corda as a privacy-oriented ledger that is suitable to regulated industries, and Solana as a high-performance public blockchain that was developed to support web-scale applications. The paper breaks down the major architectural building blocks of each framework, including their permissioning models, data models, consensus models, and execution environments for smart contracts. Next, it compares their scalability and performance by combining the findings of notable benchmark experiments with relevant performance metrics (throughput and latency). Moreover, the paper investigates practical adoption by examining notable examples in financial services, supply chain management, and the fundamental growth of the Web3 economy. The most valuable output of this study is a synthesized framework selection matrix, which aligns platform abilities with the particular business and technical requirements as an evidence-based (observed in the field) guide that practitioners can use; at the same time, it will serve as a well-structured point of departure in future academic studies and research on the topic of distributed systems.

The article explores the essence of cryptocurrencies as a phenomenon of the digital economy through a conceptual and categorical analysis and typology, combining their financial, technological, and institutional characteristics. The study addresses the challenge of defining the concept of "cryptocurrency" in the context of the rapid digital transformation of the economy. It presents an analysis of key approaches to the typology of cryptocurrencies as money, investment assets, and technological platforms. The paper substantiates the relevance of applying a flexible functional approach that accounts for the use and evolution of cryptocurrencies within the digital economy. It is argued that the term "cryptocurrency" cannot be reduced to a single universal definition, as it reflects the multidimensional nature of digital assets undergoing constant transformation. The analysis of their functional orientation demonstrates that contemporary cryptocurrencies perform a wide range of tasks within the digital economy — from payment solutions to cross-chain interaction, from privacy protection to servicing logistics and media. This justifies the need to rethink approaches to their definition, considering both the economic context and the technical architecture of cryptocurrency operations. The study concludes that in the digital economy, cryptocurrencies are evolving beyond purely monetary functions — such as accumulation, speculation, and payments — toward acquiring the features of a technological unit of value operating within various digital ecosystems. Future research should focus on the development of a functional classification of cryptocurrencies, the analysis of their interaction with the traditional financial system, and the assessment of the impact of emerging technologies (in particular, Web3, DeFi, and AI) on the evolution of cryptocurrency ecosystems.

The Double Edge of Absolute Trust: The Ethical Paradox of Blockchain

José Martin Leonardo Marquez Vaamonde

Introduction:The study examined blockchain technology as a pillar of Web3, highlighting its principles of immutability, transparency, and decentralization. It analyzed the paradox that these same virtues could become disadvantages when it was necessary to correct errors, delete data, or deal with malicious uses, generating legal and ethical tensions.Development:Cases and studies were reviewed that showed how immutability guaranteed integrity and resistance to censorship but was incompatible with rights such as the “right to be forgotten” under the GDPR. Situations were also documented in which decentralization empowered both legitimate actors and criminals, eliminating consumer protection mechanisms. Faced with these dilemmas, solutions such as off-chain storage, updatable smart contracts, decentralized identity, and zero-knowledge proofs were evaluated. The proposal for double validation was highlighted, which incorporated a layer of smart contract verification to authenticate the origin and legitimacy of information before it was recorded. The validation of sensitive content by the people involved was also proposed as a strategy to prevent defamation, misinformation, or the dissemination of illegal material. Conclusion:The paper concluded that the potential of blockchain lay in its integration within an ethical, legal, and social framework. The implementation of mandatory verification and validation mechanisms strengthened accountability and individual protection, transforming blockchain into a tool that is not only secure and transparent, but also fair and socially responsible.

Design and implementation of solvency proof system based on zero knowledge proofs

Siyu Chen, Renhong Diao, Jiameng Xu

Abstract The aim of this study is to design and implement a system that allows centralized blockchain institutions to prove their solvency. This system ensures that institutions do not misappropriate user assets and enhances trust between users and institutions. The article introduces the Groth‐16 zero‐knowledge proof algorithm from ZK‐SNARK (zero‐knowledge succinct non‐interactive argument of knowledge). The R1CS arithmetic circuit in the Groth‐16 algorithm effectively guarantees the authenticity and tamper‐resistance of the system's raw data sources. Additionally, it combines the use of Merkle Sum Trees and Sparse Merkle trees. The former enables users to perform distributed verification of solvency proofs, while the latter effectively hides the overall number of users. Finally, users verify the balances and the private key signatures of addresses in the institution's bulletin board. Together, these components form a comprehensive and distributed solvency proof solution. This solution is a pioneering solution in the field of blockchain solvency proofs and provides a secure, efficient, and privacy‐preserving method for centralized cryptocurrency service providers or Web3 enterprise custodians. It effectively addresses the challenge of proving an institution's possession of sufficient reserves to cover user assets without compromising user privacy or disclosing the institution's scale.

Trustworthy AI for Whom in Smart Cities?

Igor Calzada

As generative AI (GenAI) technologies proliferate in urban governance, the challenge of building trustworthy AI systems becomes increasingly urgent. This chapter critically examines “trustworthiness” not as a purely technical attribute, but as a socio-political construct shaped by power, participation, and policy. Focusing on smart cities as testbeds of algorithmic governance, it explores how decentralized Web3 technologies—such as blockchain, DAOs, and data cooperatives—can offer structural alternatives to centralized, opaque systems. Drawing on action research from the Horizon Europe ENFIELD project and framed by EU policy developments like the AI Act and the Draghi Report, the chapter proposes a multi-layered governance model. It evaluates seven emerging techniques to strengthen GenAI accountability: (i) federated learning, (ii) blockchain provenance tracking, (iii) zero-knowledge proofs, (iv) DAO-based verification, (v) digital watermarking, (vi) explainable AI (XAI), and (vii) privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML). The chapter ultimately argues that trustworthy AI must be embedded in participatory governance, algorithmic transparency, and plural civic oversight. By reframing trust as a relational, institutional, and democratic issue, it contributes to reimagining smart cities not as technocratic projects, but as inclusive arenas for data justice and democratic renewal.
