Construction Payment Automation through Smart Contract-based Blockchain Framework

Han Luo, Moumita Das, Jun Wang, Jack C.P. Cheng

A construction contract facilitates payments through the supply chain by integrating people, activities, and events throughout the project period through obligations, permissions, and prohibitions in its terms and conditions. The management of payments is a manual process and is more difficult in the case of construction projects as different stakeholders at different levels of the project organizational structure are bound by different contracts. Moreover, payments are strongly affected by the lack of clarity in the definitions of the obligations, responsibilities, and liabilities of various stakeholders in construction contracts. This intensifies disputes and causes delays in construction payments leading to additional expenditure, cash flow problems, and lack of trust. Therefore, to address these problems, we propose a methodology to automate construction payments by formalizing them into smart contracts and executing on a decentralized blockchain based framework. We formalize the payment logic that binds the prohibitions and liabilities associated with financial commitments, such as interim payments on completion of tasks in a construction project, and convert it into a computer-executable code. A framework based on blockchain is used to host this smart contract and to automate actions such as the triggering of payments after achieving consensus among the relevant project stakeholders. This framework also address the conditions required for the security of information in construction projects, such as confidentiality and information integrity in a multi-party environment. The proposed framework is demonstrated through a case-based scenario. © 2019 International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction I.A.A.R.C. All rights reserved.

The Potential of Blockchain in Building Construction

Zakaria Dakhli, Zoubeir Lafhaj, Alan Mossman

Construction customers want more complex facilities delivered faster and at a lower cost. Transaction costs account for a significant proportion of each new or refurbished facility (a 2017 report from the Infrastructure Client Group in the UK suggests as high as 50%), yet they contribute no value to the customer. Blockchain is being suggested as a way to reduce transaction costs by eliminating the need for intermediaries to build trust as a prerequisite for successfully executed agreements. This study first describes the thinking that underpins blockchain technology, outlining how it works, and the potential limitations of the technology. Second, using a case study, reviews the potential cost savings from the use of blockchain for a real estate company. The results reveal a potential cost savings from blockchain deployment at 8.3% of the total cost of residential construction, with a standard deviation of 1.26%. Third, we explore the implications, risks and applications of blockchain technology for improving flow in the end-to-end design and construction process and we identify opportunities for future research on blockchain applications in construction.

Improving Opportunities in Healthcare Supply Chain Processes via the Internet of Things and Blockchain Technology

Raja Jayaraman, Khaled Salah, Nelson King

Despite key advances in healthcare informatics and management, little progress to address supply chain process-related problems has been made to date. Specifically, key healthcare supply chain processes include product recalls, monitoring of product supply shortages, expiration, and counterfeits. Implementing and executing these processes in a trusted, secure, efficient, globally accessible and traceable manner is challenging due to the fragmented nature of the healthcare supply chain, which is prone to systemic errors and redundant efforts that may compromise patient safety and impact health outcomes adversely. Blockchain, combined with the Internet of things (IoT), is an emerging technology that can offer a practical solution to these challenges. Accordingly, IoT blockchain offers a superior way to track and trace products via a peer-to-peer distributed, secure, and shared ledger of the blockchain network. This article highlights key challenges related to healthcare supply chains, and illustrates how IoT blockchain technologies can play a role in overcoming these challenges now and in the near future.

Potential of blockchain technology to solve fake diploma problem

Rakibul Hasan Sayed

Blockchain technology is a revolutionary technology for its potential to build systems where strangers can transact with each other without the need of any intermediary to oversee the transaction between the parties. In our traditional degree certificate system, employers need to trust the intermediaries e.g. certificate holder, teacher and university officials for the legitimacy of the certificate. Because of trust, there are vulnerabilities to fraudulent activities by the intermediaries to produce fake diplomas or fake degree certificates. Fake certificates cause significant damages to the society. In this research, using design science research methodology (DSRM) process model, we have developed a conceptual model of a blockchain-based certificate system where blockchain technology replaces the need of trust on intermediaries in the certificate system and prevent the fraudulent activities to produce fake or illegitimate certificates. Our conceptual model addresses the fraudulent activities which are not addressed by the existing blockchain-based certificate systems. Developed artefact the conceptual model can be used for developing prototype and further research. This research also contributes to the research field of blockchain technology as a trust-free technology and fraud activities in degree certificate system.

Exploring How Blockchain Impacts Loyalty Program Participation Behaviors: An Exploratory Case Study

Lu Wang, Xin Luo, Ying Hua, Jing Wang

How to keep customers motivated in participative behaviors remains one major challenge in extant loyalty program (LP) studies. While some companies have initiated efforts to utilize blockchain-based distributed ledgers and smart contract capabilities to enhance customer experience and improve LP efficiencies, academic assessment of blockchain application in the LP context remains scarce. This research attempts to establish a theoretical overview of how the key natures of blockchain influence customers’ varying motivations (economy, autonomy, competence and relatedness) and perceived value, which consequently induce participative behaviors in a loyalty points context. Then, using an exploratory case study of Bubichain in China, we verify that the blockchain-enabled loyalty points scheme not only improves customers’ economic perceived value by meeting their economic motives, as the traditional one does, but also enhances their social interaction and psychological self-fulfillment value perception by meeting their intrinsic motivations, thus increasing customers’ experience and participation behaviors.
