Interplay between Bitcoin price and its mining difficulty

Ondruška, Daniel

Cryptocurrencies are well known asset that almost everyone at least heard of. Some of these cryptocurrencies have all of its supply already in circulation, while others do not. Two biggest cryptocurrencies, Ethereum and Bitcoin, have their supply being increased every day through the process known as mining, which many never even heard of. This process and its interaction with price are the main topic of this thesis. Price and hash rate, which is good and flexible index of difficulty of mining, of Bitcoin and Ethereum are studied and it is shown, that there is an interplay among both currencies but also withing the currency itself.

BITCOIN MINING AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS

Şerif Dilek, Yunus Furuncu

Bitcoin, with its market value among cryptocurrenciesand being the biggest in terms of its processing volume, carries greatpotential in terms of low cost, speedy processing and low-level risk while alsobringing with it important global-level change and transformation. On the otherhand, the fact that cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin specifically are new, ofunclear legal status, and carry the risk of being involved in illegal activity, there is the potential for their use as an extremely volatile and speculativeinvestment tool and have environmental effects. This study examines Bitcoinmining and blockchain technology and investigates the high amounts of energyconsumed by Bitcoin and its environmental effects. It is argued that the energyconsumed as a result of increased Bitcoin mining will have environmental andsocial consequences, such as global warming and climate change.

Bitcoin mining is about to become a lot less profitable

William J. Buchanan

Imagine being told that your wage was going to be cut in half. Well, that’s what’s soon going to happen to those who make money from Bitcoin mining, the process of earning the online currency Bitcoin. The current expected date for this change is 11 July 2016. Many see this as the day when Bitcoin prices will rocket and when Bitcoin owners could make a great deal of money. Others see it as the start of a Bitcoin crash. At present no one quite knows which way it will go.Bitcoin was created in 2009 by someone known as Satoshi Nakamoto, borrowing from a whole lot of research methods. It is a cryptocurrency, meaning it uses digital encryption techniques to create bitcoins and secure financial transactions. It doesn’t need a central government or organisation to regulate it, nor a broker to manage payments.Conventional currencies usually have a central bank that creates money and controls its supply. Bitcoin is instead created when individuals “mine” for it by using their computers to perform complex calculations through special software. The algorithm behind Bitcoin is designed to limit the number of bitcoins that can ever be created. All Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public database known as a blockchain. Every time someone mines for Bitcoin, it is recorded with a new block that is transmitted to every Bitcoin app across the network, like a bank updating its online records.

Variance structure of the Bitcoin currency

Pátek, Martin

The purpose of this thesis is to explain how Bitcoin works, analyze the Bitcoin total variation and to separate the jump component of realized variance from the continuous part. In order to do so, we use estimates of quadratic variation and integrated variance. We detect jumps using a test which is based on the difference between realized variance and bipower variation. The results for BTC/USD exchange rate are then compared with the results for EUR/USD exchange rate, price of gold and for the S&P 500 index. In case of all datasets, we use data with five-minute frequency. It seems that no other work analyzing the Bitcoin total variation using the same methods to separate the jump component from the continuous part of a price process has been written so far. We found that jumps in the Bitcoin total variation are stronger than for other analyzed instruments. The results also suggest that the duration between jumps for Bitcoin considerably prolonged during the monitored period which may indicate that the behavior of price of bitcoin has stabilized over time. We also found out that the variance of price of bitcoin is higher during the monitored period in comparison with other analyzed instruments. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Action, Norms and Critique

Michaël Foessel

IntroductionOn several occasions, Paul Ricoeur used expression of to characterize his philosophical enterprise and its unity. We know for a fact that after having investigated finitude of act of willing and evil that pervades human freedom, Ricoeur's project was to dedicate an entire volume to creative capacity of acting consciousness. That type of creation, understood against backdrop of a poetics, should emphasize function of imagination, which consists in practical power to innovate, rather than psychological function of reproducing perceptions. This projected completion of philosophy of will in a poetics never saw light of day; because of this, Ricoeur's philosophy is caught up in a sort of incompleteness. Probably because he saw it fit to accentuate mediations that separate subject from his or her origins and potencies, he never dedicated a book to practical imaginary. Instead of a poetics of will, Ricoeur published his book on Freud, in which he explores discovery of unconscious and its consequences for concept of interpretation.1Does this necessarily mean that project of a of had simply been abandoned? Actually, Ricoeur never ceased to reflect upon rela- tion between symbolic imaginary and human action. If we no longer seem to find topic of will thematically analyzed in his work, this is without a doubt due to his increasing suspicion towards a topic that stems from both psychology and metaphysics. However, we can find many texts which attest to fact that he continued to approach action and imaginary together. The 1976 article Imagination in Discourse and in Action,2 to mention only one, explicitly takes up thread of an investigation to which he earlier gave the ambitious name of poetics of will.3 As its title indicates, this text elaborates on passage of theory of productive imagination from sphere of discourse to that of action. This extension of imagination from semantics to praxis was, from that moment on, presented as a necessary introduction to a poetics of will, now grounded in a redefinition of potencies of imaginary. If, therefore, it is true that Ricoeur revived his earlier project, it must be added that this was done through a radical redefinition of its meaning. And that transformation is in itself a sound proof of evolution of his philosophy from a theory of consciousness to a hermeneutics of capacities. This evolution, which is confirmed by Ricoeur himself, is due to an inner logic in his work, and I cannot explicate it fully here. Instead, I will focus on what is at stake in approaching action through powers of imaginary. In fact, originality of Ricoeur's method lies in his decision to place imagination at heart of a practical anthropology attentive to capacities of each individual. Ricoeur constantly reasserts fundamental claim according to which there is no pure action, no action that can be described independently of language that expresses it and concrete modes of its effectuation. Ricoeur's anthropol- ogy is an anthropology of capacities, that is, of action; and this not in mode of subjective virtuality but rather as a real potency. This phenomenology of capable human being is loosely inspired by Merleau-Ponty's practical rewriting of cogito: Consciousness is in first place not a matter of 'I think that' but of 'I can.'4 By encompassing in same approach action and imagination, Ricoeur remains faithful to methodological principle that grants priority to description of possible over that of actual. As a faculty of producing fictions, imagination acquires a fundamental heuristic function: it is not only that which guides action, but also what makes it intelligible for philosophy.Ricoeur's own trajectory regarding this question is one that goes from definition of imaginary as a faculty of knowing, towards approaching imagination as a practical faculty shedding light on human capacities. …
