Design and Implementation of a Secure and Transparent Decentralized Voting System using Blockchain Technology

Bishwa Prakash Prajapati

Abstract—The integrity and transparency of voting systems are fundamental to the democratic process; however, traditional voting mechanisms often encounter issues such as fraud, manipulation, limited transparency, and centralized control. To address these challenges, this research proposes a decentralized voting system utilizing blockchain technology. The system leverages the Ethereum blockchain, smart contracts developed in Solidity, and a React.js-based frontend integrated with Web3.js and MetaMask to ensure secure voter authentication, transparent vote casting, and immutable vote recording. Voter and candidate registrations are managed through decentralized smart contracts, and all transactions are permanently stored on the blockchain, providing public verifiability while preserving voter anonymity. Development and testing were conducted in a simulated environment using Ganache and the Truffle Suite, allowing for extensive validation of system functionalities. Experimental results demonstrate enhanced security, real-time result computation, prevention of double voting, and elimination of any single point of failure. This decentralized architecture significantly improves trust, transparency, and security in electoral processes, offering a scalable and reliable model for the future of electronic voting systems. Index Terms— Blockchain, Decentralized Voting, Ethereum, Smart Contracts, Solidity, Web3.js, MetaMask, Ganache, Truffle Framework, E-voting Systems.

BlockShare – Blockchain Based Secure Data Sharing Platform

Rajnikanth Mohanty

Abstract - In the rapidly advancing digital era, the requirement for secure, transparent, and reliable data-sharing mechanisms has become increasingly critical across various sectors. Traditional centralized data-sharing models suffer from inherent limitations, including vulnerability to data breaches, unauthorized access, single points of failure, and insufficient transparency in data access and audit trails. These challenges compromise not only the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data but also erode stakeholder trust in digital systems. To overcome these issues, this paper presents BlockShare, a blockchain-powered, decentralized framework designed to facilitate secure, tamper-proof, and efficient data exchange. BlockShare leverages the foundational principles of blockchain technology—namely decentralization, immutability, and transparency—to enhance the robustness and reliability of data-sharing architectures. The proposed system eliminates central authority dependence by distributing data storage and control across a decentralized ledger, thereby minimizing potential attack vectors and ensuring continuous data availability. To regulate data access and maintain policy enforcement, smart contracts written in Solidity are integrated within the system. These smart contracts autonomously manage permissions and user authentication, ensuring that only verified and authorized parties can access specific datasets, with every action recorded immutably on the blockchain. Moreover, data confidentiality is preserved through the implementation of AES-256 encryption, a widely recognized standard for high-security data protection. Prior to storage, all data is encrypted and then uploaded to a decentralized file system, specifically the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), which provides enhanced fault tolerance, redundancy, and distributed access. This dual-layered approach—combining blockchain for governance and IPFS for storage—ensures that data remains protected both in transit and at rest. By integrating smart contract-based automation, robust encryption protocols, and distributed storage solutions, BlockShare delivers a scalable and resilient infrastructure for data exchange. The system is particularly applicable in domains requiring stringent data protection and transparency, such as healthcare, finance, legal, and government sectors. Through this innovative approach, BlockShare aims to redefine trust in digital interactions and lay the groundwork for the next generation of secure data-sharing ecosystems. Keywords - Blockchain, Data Sharing, Decentralized Storage, Smart Contracts, Encryption, IPFS, Ethereum, Security, Data Privacy, AES-256, Web3, Authentication, DApp, Decentralization, Access Control.

Block Chain-Based Secure Document Sharing

Sai Sandeep N, Magna Yadlapalli

The Blockchain-Based Secure Document Sharing project offers a decentralized approach to secure, transparent, and efficient document sharing, resolving the weaknesses of conventional centralized systems. Utilizing Ethereum blockchain, smart contracts, and the Inter Planetary File System (IPFS), the system provides immutability, strong access control, and auditability. Smart contracts handle document ownership, versioning, and permissioned sharing, while IPFS facilitates decentralized storage of encrypted files, with content identifiers being stored on-chain for integrity checks. The frontend, implemented in React with Web3.js integration, has a user-friendly interface for wallet management, document upload, and secure sharing using protected routes and Bootstrap to make it responsive. The backend, implemented with Express.js, performs file upload through Multer and emulates IPFS interaction, with a plan to fully integrate IPFS. Local development is done using Ganache and Truffle to test and deploy the blockchain. Key features are tamper-proof audit trails, attribute-based access control, and real-time global accessibility, making the system ideal for industries such as healthcare, finance, and education. Scalability and reliability challenges such as IPFS integration, Web3 provider error handling, and contract address configuration are being tackled to make the system scalable and reliable. Through blockchain's immutability coupled with IPFS's decentralized storage, this project presents a safe and affordable substitute to centralized document storage systems, while promoting compliance and trust as it simplifies collaboration. Planned for the future include layer-2 scalability solutions as well as wider testing to improve production readiness.

Toward Transparent and Modular DApps: A Web3 SaaS Prototype for Token Lifecycle Management

Priyanshu P. Wadke

Abstract- The evolution of blockchain and Web3 technologies has paved the way for decentralized application platforms that enable transparent, tamper-proof transactions without relying on centralized servers. However, existing solutions such as Gitcoin and Giveth are either too complex or unsuitable for modular deployment in educational and lightweight environments. This paper proposes MetaSuite, a role-based, blockchain-driven Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that enables users to create, transfer, and donate tokens while allowing an administrator to securely withdraw funds. Built entirely on the Ethereum blockchain using Solidity smart contracts, MetaSuite operates without a backend and integrates wallet-based authentication via MetaMask and Ethers.js. The platform ensures transparent fund management through on-chain event logging and role-based access controls. Performance evaluations on the Ethereum HoleskyTestnet demonstrate the system’s reliability, gas-efficiency, and real-time responsiveness. By eliminating backend dependencies and emphasizing traceability, MetaSuite serves as a minimalistic yet scalable Web3 solution suitable for academic, experimental, and small-scale real-world deployments. Keywords—Blockchain, Web3, Smart Contracts, Ethereum, MetaMask, Tokenization, SaaS, Ethers.js, Decentralized Applications.

Web3 Multimedia Applications: Under the Impact of Decentralization

Hao Wu, Maha Abdallah, Yuanfang Chi, Lehao Lin · 5 authors

In the Web3 ecosystem, multimedia applications exhibit significant potential by leveraging decentralization, regarded as the core spirit of Web3. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the potential of decentralization in shaping multimedia applications in the Web3 ecosystem. Through a systematic review of the academic research conducted over the past decade on Web3 decentralization, we identify the two key distinctive decentralization characteristics (decentralized assets and decentralized participation). Subsequently, we comprehensively analyze Web3 applications from both technology and application dimensions. Building upon this, we focus on multimedia-related aspects and propose an architecture for Web3 multimedia applications. In contrast to the broader scope of Web3 applications, the unique aspects of Web3 multimedia applications reside in their core application components (non-fungible tokens and smart contract-based rules) and core application domains (art, games, and social media). Based on this architecture, we provide a precise definition of Web3 multimedia applications. Lastly, through the lens of the two identified distinctive decentralization characteristics, we investigate the advantages, development, and limitations of Web3 multimedia applications within the three core application domains, namely crypto art, blockchain games, and blockchain on social media (BOSM). Furthermore, we share our insights into several promising yet challenging directions, covering the interoperability and potential of increasingly valuable multimedia content, as well as the delicate balance between centralization and decentralization.

Exploring the potential of ChatGPT in detecting logical vulnerabilities in smart contracts

Qingyuan Liu, Meng Wu, Jiachi Chen, Ting Chen · 9 authors

With the rapid expansion of blockchain applications, smart contracts are becoming increasingly complex, making the automated detection of contract vulnerabilities more critical than ever. Large language models, due to their advanced code comprehensive ability, are considered to have the potential to undertake the task of automated software vulnerability discovery. Although there have been empirical studies on ChatGPT's automated discovery of contract vulnerabilities, the current empirical research has not addressed how well ChatGPT can detect logical vulnerabilities in smart contracts or whether ChatGPT's detection performance for logical vulnerabilities can be improved. To fill this gap, this study collected and organized seven types of logical vulnerability source codes from 6165 real smart contract audit reports and three datasets, such as Web3Bugs, and used this database to validate ChatGPT's detection capability for logical vulnerabilities. To improve ChatGPT's accuracy in detecting logical vulnerabilities, we fine-tuned ChatGPT with a dataset marked with a specific method, achieving an average accuracy rate of 95% for single vulnerability detection per training session. We improved the original marking method to increase further the number of vulnerabilities that a single model can detect. We used a specific completion marking format, ultimately enabling ChatGPT to detect various logical vulnerabilities. In terms of enhancing model scalability, we found a special training set marking method that allows for the addition of detectable vulnerability types through secondary training.

Exploring Time-Ordered Triadic Closure in Online Social Networks

Alessia Galdeman, Cheick Tidiane Bâ, Matteo Zignani, Sabrina Gaito

Online social platforms for digital communication necessitate an in-depth understanding of their evolving dynamics, especially after the renewal requests brought about by new paradigms, such as Web3. The dynamics within online social networks (OSNs) are influenced by numerous factors, encompassing user behavior, content generation, platform features, and technological advancements, with triadic closure standing out as a prominent and influential element. In this study, we focus on the temporal aspects of triadic closure and its role in the evolution of OSNs, especially after the advent of the Web3 paradigm. By analyzing networks with timestamped links from diverse platforms based on different architectures, including communication, Web3-based, and trade networks, we developed a comprehensive analytical pipeline to support the study of triadic closure patterns. This pipeline includes an algorithm for the census of time-ordered triads, a vector-based model for representing growing networks (growth triadic profile), the identification of triadic closure rules (TERs), and the evaluation of the speed of the formation of closed triads. Our findings reveal significant variations in the impact of triadic closure across different OSNs, marked by diverse growth triadic profiles and varying formation speeds of closed triads as well as diversity in the predictability of evolutionary patterns based on triads. This study not only enhances the comprehension of triadic closure in the temporal evolution of OSNs but also provides valuable insights to be taken into account for the design and administration of online social platforms.

Beyond Visual Confusion: Understanding How Inconsistencies in ENS Normalization Facilitate Homoglyph Attacks

Jianwei Huang, Sridatta Raghavendra Chintapalli, Mengxiao Wang, Guofei Gu

In recent years, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has garnered significant attention within the community for enabling the use of Unicode in domain names, thereby facilitating the inclusion of a wide array of character sets such as Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, and Chinese. While this feature enhances the versatility and global accessibility of domain names, it concurrently introduces a substantial security vulnerability due to the presence of homoglyphs-characters that are visually similar to others across Unicode and ASCII sets. These similarities can be exploited in homoglyph attacks, posing a distinct threat to domain name integrity. Despite community efforts to counteract this issue through a normalization process prior to domain resolution, our analysis uncovers significant discrepancies in how the normalization processes are applied across various applications. This inconsistency could result in the same domain name being resolved to different addresses in different applications, underscoring a critical vulnerability. We also discovered the new attack scenario in ENS which may cause legitimate domains resolved into malicious addresses even when they are verified by authorities. To systematically evaluate this inconsistency, we designed a tool for detecting application-level discrepancies in domain normalization process without requiring access to the application's source code. Our evaluation on hundreds of real-world Web3 applications identifies widespread deviations from established homoglyph mitigation practices, with more than 60% digital wallets and 80% dApps (decentralized applications) not able to produce consistent ENS resolving results, potentially impacting millions of users. This analysis underscores the urgent need for a standardized implementation of normalization processes to safeguard the integrity and security of ENS domains.

The Next Frontiers of Online Privacy1

Mary C. Lacity, Dan Conway, Kiran Garimella, Erran Carmel

This chapter has two purposes. First, we describe how information system (IS) scholars approach privacy research and summarize major findings. IS scholars are concerned with information privacy and have discovered that individuals have serious information privacy concerns. These concerns, however, do not prevent individuals from disclosing personal identifiable information (PII) to centralized platform providers, a phenomenon called the privacy paradox . We highlight four common explanations for the privacy paradox: privacy calculus, privacy fatigue, trust, and lack of choice. Most IS privacy research, to date, has investigated Web2 applications – which is the foundation for today’s global online economy. With Web2, users rely on centralized platforms for online searching, shopping, banking, data storage, social media, and other services. Second, we introduce scholars to the next frontiers of human privacy with three emerging solutions: decentralization (Web3), multi-party computation (MPC), and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). Web3 applications enhance information privacy compared to Web2 because individuals can access services without disclosing PII to a central authority. The privacy objective is achieved technically through a combination of digital wallets, cryptography, and distributed ledgers (a.k.a. blockchain). Multi-party computation is an innovative approach to calculating information among trusted parties without revealing anyone’s confidential data. It’s a way to answer common questions among trusted parties, such as “Am I paying the same for materials?” and “Does anyone else see suspicious cybersecurity activity on their networks?” Finally, we explain ZKP as a method by which one party can prove to another that they possess a particular identity, item, or piece of knowledge without revealing the specifics of what that identity, item, or knowledge is. Unlike MPC, some types of ZKPs do not require a priori trust; instead, trading partners trust mathematical proofs. Together, Web3, MPC, and ZKPs potentially offer organizations and individuals enhanced online privacy but collectively require more research and field experience.

Tokenization

Carsten Sørensen, Christophe Viguerie, Juan Camilo Giraldo-Mora, Thamim Ahmed

The public World Wide Web is over 30 years old and has facilitated a whirlwind of innovation. Whereas the first phase (Web1) democratized access to information in publicly controlled infrastructures, and the second phase (Web2) democratized peer-to-peer interaction, this has also led to the dominance of global digital platforms that have privatized access to and orchestrated in digital infrastructures. Thus, while digital platforms enable consumer engagement at a truly global scale, they also hinder innovation in flexible inter-organizational collaboration. The Web3 vision, however, represents the hope of the “Goldilocks” balancing of the public and the private by facilitating inter-organizational collaboration through blockchain-based tokenization. The development of this digital infrastructure arguably inherits the best from the open and private arrangements by rendering each participant a governing member in inter-organizational arrangements. This chapter outlines the foundational assumptions behind the Web3 vision for inter-organizational collaboration through blockchain-based tokenization, provides examples of such tokenization, and outlines a research agenda for further work.

Hunting in the Dark Forest: A Pre-trained Model for On-chain Attack Transaction Detection in Web3

Zhiying Wu, Jiajing Wu, Hui Zhang, Zibin Zheng · 5 authors

In recent years, a large number of on-chain attacks have emerged in the blockchain empowered Web3 ecosystem. In the year of 2023 alone, on-chain attacks have caused losses of over 585 million. Attackers use blockchain transactions to carry out on-chain attacks, for example, exploiting vulnerabilities or business logic flaws in Web3 applications. A wealth of efforts have been devoted to detecting on-chain attack transactions through expert patterns and machine learning techniques. However, in this ever-evolving ecosystem, the performance of current methods is limited in detecting new on-chain attacks, due to the obsoleting of attack recognition patterns or the reliance on on-chain attack samples. In this paper, we propose a universal approach for detecting on-chain attacks even when there are few or even no new on-chain attack samples. Specifically, an in-depth analysis of the transaction characteristics is conducted, and we propose a new insight to train a generic attack transaction detecting model, i.e., transaction reconstruction. Particularly, to overcome the over-fitting in the transaction reconstruction task, we use the web-scale function comments related to transactions as supervision information, rather than expert-confirmed labels. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach surpasses the supervised state-of-the-art by 13% in AUC, with just 30 known on-chain attack samples. Moreover, without any known attack samples, our method can still detect new on-chain attacks in the wild (with a precision of 61.83%). Among attacks detected in the wild, we confirm 1,692 address poisoning attacks, a new type of on-chain attack targeting token holders. Our code is available at: https://github.com/wuzhy1ng/attack_trans_detection_www25.

vApps: Verifiable Applications at Internet Scale

Isaac Zhang, Kshitij Kulkarni, Tan Li, Daniel Wong · 9 authors

Blockchain technology promises a decentralized, trustless, and interoperable infrastructure. However, widespread adoption remains hindered by issues such as limited scalability, high transaction costs, and the complexity of maintaining coherent verification logic across different blockchain layers. This paper introduces Verifiable Applications (vApps), a novel development framework designed to streamline the creation and deployment of verifiable blockchain computing applications. vApps offer a unified Rust-based Domain-Specific Language (DSL) within a comprehensive SDK, featuring modular abstractions for verification, proof generation, and inter-chain connectivity. This eases the developer's burden in securing diverse software components, allowing them to focus on application logic. The DSL also ensures that applications can automatically take advantage of specialized precompiles and hardware acceleration to achieve consistently high performance with minimal developer effort, as demonstrated by benchmark results for zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs). Experiments show that native Rust execution eliminates interpretation overhead, delivering up to an 197x cycle count improvement compared to EVM-based approaches. Precompiled circuits can accelerate the proof by more than 95%, while GPU acceleration increases throughput by up to 30x and recursion compresses the proof size by up to 230x, enabling succinct and efficient verification. The framework also supports seamless integration with the Web2 and Web3 systems, enabling developers to focus solely on their application logic. Through modular architecture, robust security guarantees, and composability, vApps pave the way toward a trust-minimized and verifiable Internet-scale application environment.

DMind Benchmark: Toward a Holistic Assessment of LLM Capabilities across the Web3 Domain

Enhao Huang, Pengyu Sun, Shuxun Wang, Zixin Lin · 16 authors

The Web3 ecosystem, underpinned by cryptographic primitives and decentralized consensus, represents a high-stakes environment where software vulnerabilities and incentive misalignments translate directly into financial loss. As Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly integrated into this domain for tasks ranging from smart contract auditing to decentralized finance analytics, ensuring their reliability is paramount. However, general-purpose benchmarks fail to capture the specialized reasoning required for these adversarial and protocol-driven settings. To bridge this gap, we introduce DMind Benchmark, a comprehensive evaluation suite designed to rigorously assess LLM proficiency across the Web3 stack. DMind Benchmark encompasses nine distinct subdomains (spanning infrastructure, smart contracts, token economics, etc.) and combines objective knowledge retrieval with complex open-ended reasoning tasks that emulate real-world operational challenges. We conduct an extensive evaluation of 31 leading proprietary and open-weights models, employing a contamination-aware pipeline and verifying the statistical robustness of our scoring protocol through rigorous cross-judge consistency checks. Our analysis reveals a critical dichotomy: while models demonstrate competence in foundational infrastructure concepts, they exhibit significant vulnerabilities in high-reasoning tasks such as security auditing. Furthermore, we provide a Pareto analysis to guide cost-effective deployment and demonstrate through adversarial experiments that high performance on DMind Benchmark necessitates genuine reasoning rather than superficial memorization. Since its open-source release in April 2025, DMind Benchmark achieved the #1 trending position on Hugging Face for nearly a week and accumulated over 13k downloads by June 2026, establishing itself as a standard for advancing secure and trustworthy AI in Web3.

Cybersquatting in Web3: The Case of NFT

Kai Ma, Ningyu He, Jintao Huang, B. X. Zhang · 6 authors

Cybersquatting refers to the practice where attackers register a domain name similar to a legitimate one to confuse users for illegal gains. With the growth of the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) ecosystem, there are indications that cybersquatting tactics have evolved from targeting domain names to NFTs. This paper presents the first in-depth measurement study of NFT cybersquatting. By analyzing over 220K NFT collections with over 150M NFT tokens, we have identified 8,019 cybersquatting NFT collections targeting 654 popular NFT projects. Through systematic analysis, we discover and characterize seven distinct squatting tactics employed by scammers. We further conduct a comprehensive measurement study of these cybersquatting NFT collections, examining their metadata, associated digital asset content, and social media status. Our analysis reveals that these NFT cybersquatting activities have resulted in a significant financial impact, with over 670K victims affected by these scams, leading to a total financial exploitation of $59.26 million. Our findings demonstrate the urgency to identify and prevent NFT squatting abuses.

Damodar Bihani, Bright Chibunna Ubamadu, Andrew Ifesinachi Daraojimba

The evolution of Web3 has ushered in a paradigm shift from centralized control to decentralized, user-centric ecosystems powered by blockchain technology. At the core of these ecosystems lies tokenomics—the strategic design and management of token economies—which plays a crucial role in ensuring long-term sustainability, scalability, and user engagement. This paper presents a strategic framework for understanding and optimizing tokenomics within Web3 ecosystems, integrating insights from game theory, behavioral economics, and blockchain governance. It identifies key components of effective tokenomic models, including token utility, supply mechanisms, distribution strategies, and incentive alignment. The proposed framework emphasizes the importance of balancing inflationary and deflationary forces, designing value accrual mechanisms that benefit both users and network developers, and embedding governance protocols that enhance transparency and resilience. Additionally, this study explores the interplay between token utility and network effects, underscoring how strategic token design can accelerate ecosystem growth while maintaining decentralization. By analyzing successful Web3 projects such as Ethereum, Polkadot, and Cosmos, the paper extracts best practices and highlights potential pitfalls that hinder ecosystem scalability and trust. Furthermore, it evaluates regulatory implications, sustainability challenges, and market volatility, proposing adaptive policy mechanisms to future-proof token economies. The framework provides a roadmap for developers, investors, and policymakers aiming to build or assess blockchain ecosystems that are not only technologically sound but also economically viable. In doing so, this research bridges the gap between technical blockchain design and economic sustainability, offering actionable insights for fostering inclusive, community-driven, and robust Web3 infrastructures. As blockchain adoption accelerates globally, strategic tokenomics will be pivotal in shaping the next generation of digital economies, ensuring equitable value creation and distribution in decentralized environments.
