Currently, the halalness of a product may only be determined by the halal certificate or halal label displayed on the product packaging. Simply put, several halal-related issues, like cross-contamination, logistical issues, halal counterfeiting, global halal acceptance, and so forth, keep coming up. To address the numerous issues raised above, it is believed that a framework that can support worldwide halal provisions is necessary. The objective of this research is to create a blockchain smart contract framework for halal transparency, integrity, and traceability. Blockchain technology along with smart contracts can solve classic tracing problems including data leakage, manipulation, and invisible data. Organizational consistency across the halal production process and the availability of raw materials that adhere to sharia laws are two more basic challenges with halal certification that blockchain and smart contracts can resolve. The usual traceability problems, such as data explosion, material cross-contamination between halal and haram, and revelation of private information, can all be resolved by smart contracts that make use of on-chain, off-chain, and electronic product code information services (EPCIS).

Abstract Advancing cold‐chain medicine logistics and emergency supplies management necessitates a robust blockchain‐based traceability system. This specialized information system is essential for enhancing quality control and operational efficiency. Despite challenges like insufficient supplies, ineffective distribution, and delays, blockchain's transparency and traceability offer significant potential to revolutionize national emergency management. This paper presents a blockchain‐based traceability system tailored for cold‐chain medicine logistics. This system achieves traceability and automatic medicine quality assessment by integrating blockchain principles and leveraging hazard analysis theory combined with IoT technology. This system also enhances data reliability with a multi‐sensor data fusion algorithm, improving temperature accuracy beyond conventional methods. Additionally, the feasibility and necessity of integrating blockchain into cold‐chain pharmaceutical traceability processes is thoroughly examined. The proposed system fulfills traceability needs for emergency cold‐chain medicine while addressing industry challenges.
The popularity of virtual currencies has expanded dramatically in recent years. Seminars and conferences have been held to discuss the nature and feasibility of cryptocurrencies. Some argue that having a replacement for the current fiat currency system is a good idea since it does not need a bank account, tax payments, or audits, as cryptocurrencies do. Others argue that any means of payment other than the commonly recognised ones, such as cash, checks, DD, and so on, would allow for tax and audit evasion, which would have a huge detrimental impact on the government budget and the economy. The convergence of cryptocurrencies and Islamic finance has caused much controversy among the Muslim community about whether cryptocurrency transactions are permissible (halal) or prohibited (haram). This study investigates Islamic finance concepts as well as the technological and economic elements of cryptocurrencies in order to assess their conformity with Sharia law. It was found that cryptocurrencies are not Halal in Islam because they lack inherent value and are susceptible to additional regulatory oversight.

This research aimed at contributing on the urgency of formulating public regulation about cryptocurrency based on administrative reform, providing critical thinking about the use of cryptocurrency on economic activity in supporting sustainable tourism. Instead of focusing on economic, it focuses on the public administration to formulate the regulation of cryptocurrency circulation in Indonesia. It was underlying on descriptive qualitative method with postpositivism approach. It was conducted in Bali as the world tourism destination, and relied on tourism. The distribution of cryptocurrency is banned in Indonesia including Bali, regulated on Law No. 7 year 2011 about currency. It found the hegemony from tourists toward tourism entrepreneurs due to the demand of tourist to use crypto yet lack of regulation as legal payment. Three strategies of administrative reform applied i.e. taxation, structural and programs to implement administrative reform for cryptocurrency regulation. The practical implication shows that the regulation of legal cryptocurrency generates positive impacts on sustainable tourism growth in Bali, particularly on the tourism concept for preserving environment, social, cultural and economic. Moreover, it theoretically implicated the Public Regulation Theory on formulating public regulation that legalize crypto distribution, identifying potential issues, agenda arrangement, regulation formulation, policy approval, implementation and evaluation.
The issue of food safety has become a crucial public health issue worldwide. Blockchain technology allows consumers to track the flow of food and effectively record the sources and processes of their products, and reduces the elimination of associated food fraud phenomena, such as counterfeiting and dilution. Using signaling theory, structural equation model method and an online sample of 415 Chinese participants, this study investigates the impact of how blockchain-based food traceability system influences consumers' online purchase intentions of organic agricultural products. The results illustrate that: (1) blockchain-based food traceability system can increase consumers' willingness to buy organic agricultural products. (2) Blockchain-based food traceability system can increase consumers' product quality perceptions, product trust and environmental information transparency perceptions. (3) Product quality perceptions, product trust and environmental information transparency perceptions can also promote consumers' purchase intentions. (4) Product quality perceptions, product trust and environmental information transparency perceptions all have significant mediation effects in the in the relationship between blockchain-based food traceability system and consumer purchase intention. The findings of the research are valuable information for business managers and retailers who want to increase sales of their products, as well as helping relevant policy makers to achieve the ultimate goal of green and sustainable development in the food industry.

With 1.07% of the country's overall GDP coming from fishing, the fishing industry has huge significance in India. The supply chain and overall exports to foreign nations will be improved by revolutionizing this sector of the economy. Consumers are nowadays very much concerned about their health and in knowing about the quality of the goods they purchase or consume, particularly when it comes to nutrition. Fish must be consumed within a certain time frame and under the right circumstances because it is a perishable food. The government officials must also keep an eye on illicit fishing, which is another serious problem that disrupts ecosystems in many different places. In other words, consumers, the government, and society in general demand transparency throughout the entire value chain of fish products. In this research, the use of blockchain using Ethereum-based smart contracts to trace fish packages back and forth throughout the entire fisheries value chain is explored.

The halal industry today has achieved rapid development. Halal product is mandatory for Muslims and a big business for Indonesia. For others, it affirms the product's quality assurance and becomes a trending lifestyle. The product owner must submit an application and undergo several processes to obtain a halal certificate. However, there are challenges in the certification process and documentation. The proposed system automates the flow between certification processes through digital signing and stores the certificate and fatwa file. The study investigates the utilization of blockchain to manage the process and the integration of decentralized storage (IPFS) to store the digital version of the fatwa and certificate. A smart contract is designed and deployed on the Ethereum blockchain, and the transaction time and cost are analyzed. A smart contract enforces that certain actions are executed once the required conditions are fulfilled. The proposed system would cost 24.6 USD and require 227 seconds on average for the system setup. Each submission requires 9.86 USD and takes 92 seconds on average. Verification is free, and the average result can be obtained in one second. The appointed officer sets each entity to interact with the contract, and the digital documents (fatwa and certificate) are available online using IPFS. Progress of the certification is transparent to the public, increasing the public's trust. The study demonstrates a smart contract's capability to manage a product's certification process.
Waqf development in Malaysia benefits the economy and society, mostly in terms of facilities, education, investment, and others. Due to the massive development of the waqf industry, digitalization is deemed as a facilitative instrument in the operation of waqf. With the usage of digital platforms, the collection of waqf funds becomes more efficient and widely dispersed among Muslims. In this context, blockchain has become a new phenomenon, functioning as a ground-breaking innovation connected to bitcoin. The core idea behind a blockchain is that its users can access the ledger independently of a third party. Additionally, the blockchain counts all network nodes equally, taking human and computer communication into account without any special treatment or discrimination. Without realizing it, several waqf institutions have already applied this approach using their own platform. Therefore, this study aims to systematically review the potential application of blockchain in waqf institutions by referring to previous applications in other countries in the Middle East and Asia such as Oman, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Methodology wise, this paper employs the Systematic Literature Review which consists of the processes of identification in evaluation of the data from September 2022 until October 2022 by using related keywords to study. Secondly, is screening process which entails the process of choosing articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study screened all the 49 selected articles by choosing the criteria for articles selection which is done automatically based on the sorting function available in the database. Thirdly, eligibility which the authors manually monitored the retrieved articles to ensure all the remaining articles (after the screening process) are in line with the criteria. Lastly, the quality appraisal which to ensure that the substance of the articles was of high quality. The findings are important for waqf institutions to realize the potential benefit of blockchain in improving the efficiency of waqf operations towards attaining sustainable socio-economic development.
Medicine counterfeiting has raised significant concern in recent years. Falsified and counterfeit drug production and distribution are illegal and a public health concern. The intensity of this problem varies significantly among different countries, depending on how strongly a country’s laws and procedures are followed. Preventing counterfeit medicines has thus become a critical concern, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. This research aims, firstly, to outline the possible factors of medicine counterfeiting; secondly, to propose a blockchain-based framework to prevent medicine counterfeiting; and thirdly, to evaluate the proposed framework. A content analysis and a semi-structured interview with the key personnel related to the medicine manufacturing and distribution system in Bangladesh were carried out to derive the current scenario of medicine counterfeit. Based on the interviews and content analysis, a set of use cases for preventing medicine counterfeiting in the context of Bangladesh was explored. The required features for developing a digital solution were extracted considering the derived use cases. A blockchain-based framework for preventing medicine counterfeit was proposed by adopting the extracted features. A prototype was developed based on the proposed framework, and an evaluation study was performed to evaluate the prototype. The evaluation study showed that the average block execution time is 201 ms, and the average block time is 482 ms. Again, the proposed framework was found secure, scalable, customer-oriented, and practical compared to other systems.
The globalization of food markets has led companies to buy products not only locally, but also from other corners of the world. This has introduced complexity into supply chains, as products have to move longer distances and pass through more companies before reaching the end consumer. The meat industry has been no different. Events such as animal disease outbreaks have diminished consumer confidence in the industry and the supply chain. Coupled with this, consumers started demanding "more transparent" meat products. This has led companies to think about new traceability systems, which continue to enforce food safety and health rules, but at the same time enhance and make transparent to the consumer the origin and constitution of their products. This article proposes a traceability system in the agri-food (meat industry) with a multi-chain architecture, among them, blockchain. The use of blockchain in the traceability system helped to mitigate the omission of relevant data for the traceability process, allowing us to guarantee the immutability, reliability, and transparency of the data along the value chain. At the same time, the system was able to reduce the time of the traceability process by giving the user the possibility to access the traced information via a unique product identifier.

Summary This paper explores the potential of blockchain technology (BCT) in promoting sustainable food production and consumption (SFPC) from a consumer perspective. India, a significant global food producer, faces challenges related to affordability and food logistics due to transport and labour constraints. Food safety concerns, that is, foodborne illnesses and quality issues, alongside unexpected events like COVID‐19 and geopolitical conflicts, threaten SFPC. In recent times, consumer focus has shifted a lot towards food safety and security. The study adopted exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify the factors strengthening consumer trust through BCT. The EFA helped classify the items into five factors, that is, reliability, sustainability, impact on health, trust and switching intentions. The results reveal that these factors are the most significant reasons consumers are willing to accept a blockchain‐enabled food system over a traditional system. The study findings will benefit organisations willing to introduce blockchain within their operations to improve the consumer base. It will also prove to be helpful for researchers and academicians to understand consumer perspectives towards BCT for SFPC.

In light of the current global scenario, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder expectations for the aquaculture supply chain are more demanding than ever. The latest EU strategies for aquaculture aim to ensure its economic, environmental, and social long-term sustainability through green, technological, and social transformations. This objective is as ambitious as it is complex, involving not only the enhancement of key sustainability aspects but also the assurance of transparency, trust, and security standards across the entire supply chain. In this context, the present paper proposes a novel blockchain framework, along with the strategic implementation of smart contracts, specifically designed to effectively address the prevalent environmental challenges within the aquaculture supply chain.

Blockchain technology has emerged as a tool with the potential to enhance transparency, trust, security, and decentralization in supply chain management (SCM). This study presents a comprehensive review of the interplay between blockchain technology and SCM. By analyzing an extensive dataset of 943 articles, our exploration utilizes the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method to delve deep into the thematic structure of the discourse. This investigation revealed ten central topics ranging from blockchain’s transformative role in supply chain finance and e-commerce operations to its application in specialized areas, such as the halal food supply chain and humanitarian contexts. Particularly pronounced were discussions on the challenges and transformations of blockchain integration in supply chains and its impact on pricing strategies and decision-making. Visualization tools, including PyLDAvis, further illuminated the interconnectedness of these themes, highlighting the intertwined nature of blockchain adoption challenges with aspects such as traceability and pricing. Despite the breadth of topics covered, the paper acknowledges its limitations due to the fast-evolving nature of blockchain developments during and after our analysis period. Ultimately, this review provides a holistic academic snapshot, emphasizing both well-developed and nascent research areas and guiding future research in the evolving domain of blockchain in SCM.
Blockchain offers decentralized, trustworthy and immutable data storage based on distributed ledger technology. Blockchain technology is recognized as an innovation enabler in many areas, with the food supply chain being one of them. This paper provides a systematic literature review of the current state of adoption of blockchain technology in the agri-food sector, specifically with a focus on the wine supply chain. Blockchain has the potential to improve the traceability and authenticity of the data provenance of wine products, increase consumer trust, and reduce fraud and errors. With these goals in mind, this study identifies the main research questions pertinent to the value proposition and competitive advantage of blockchain technology in the wine value chain and key players involved in the authentication and value chain recording. The PRISMA methodology was adopted to identify, screen and select only the relevant studies that were included in the analysis. This study also addresses the limitations and challenges for adoption, such as high implementation cost and lack of competences, and the need for standardized protocols and regulations. Finally, this systematic literature review includes an analysis of reports of blockchain applications in the wine sector and outlines the recommendations for future research to further explore the potential of blockchain-based solutions that could benefit all stakeholders across the wine value chain.

At present, there is a notable divergence in viewpoints among Islamic scholars pertaining to the legality of Bitcoin transactions. A subset of these scholars categorically prohibits its use, while another endorses it. This disparity has precipitated confusion within the Muslim community, thereby complicating the task of adopting one stance over the other. The primary aim of this study is to meticulously examine and analyze the arguments presented by both subsets, with the objective of shedding light on the underlying causes of this divergence of viewpoints. To achieve this, the study utilizes a blend of descriptive and inductive analytical methodologies. The findings indicate that the scholars who prohibit Bitcoin largely base their arguments on external factors, with a minority of objections directly related to the inherent attributes of Bitcoin itself. In contrast, the subset that endorses the use of Bitcoin tends to focus on the intrinsic system of Bitcoin, often minimizing the importance of external factors. However, even the endorsers of Bitcoin acknowledge that current Bitcoin transactions are not without risks. They suggest that these risks should be addressed by the appropriate authorities through the implementation of effective preventive measures
Blockchain is a decentralized and tamper-resistant digital ledger technology that records and stores transactions or information in a secure and transparent manner across a network of computers. Each transaction, or “block,” is linked to the previous one, creating a continuous chain of information. This technology ensures data integrity, transparency, and trust among participants, as changes to the blockchain require consensus from the network, making it highly resistant to manipulation or unauthorized alterations. It is a technology that has the potential to dramatically transform the supply chains. This study investigates the opportunities and challenges of blockchain technology in transforming supply chains, and the legitimacy of its implementation into the dairy industry. By conducting a comprehensive review of recent literature at the intersection of blockchain, sustainable supply chain, and the dairy supply chain, this paper aims to determine the best blockchain-based solution for improving the efficiency and sustainability of dairy supply chains.

Purpose Blockchain technology has encouraged more transparent transactions process through decentralized protocols and has identified multi-dimensional benefits. However, value innovation–based blockchain for the particular industry requires further elaboration since there appears to be a vague understanding. Therefore, this study aims to provide a profound perspective of value innovation based blockchain, which has the potential to be applied in the halal industry. Design/methodology/approach This study developed a typology model that describes a profound understanding of blockchain adoption for value innovation. Empirical research was conducted using multiple case studies to justify the model. The case selection in this study was based on the halal industry in Indonesia. This study employed few sources to derive sufficient data through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and archival records. In particular, this study drew upon specific theories to elaborate on the blockchain-enable value innovation. Findings A blockchain is identified as having the opportunity to promote value innovation in the halal industry through its features. This study defines a typology model of value innovation-based blockchain for the halal industry that takes place on a particular spectrum. The model built in this study classifies blockchain adoption for the halal industry from specific dimensions: the degree of blockchain-based system complexity and the intensity of value innovation. Then, this study finds that these cases have different classifications and are evenly distributed in the quadrants of the model. Originality/value The typology model in this study can be a reference for decision-making when considering blockchain to leverage a value innovation in particular systems. Although blockchain technology can potentially be applied in vast areas, the decision-makers should understand that technology adoption should provide distinct values to its stakeholders, notably in multi-dimensional areas such as the halal industry. Thus, this study contributes significantly to blockchain technology usage for the halal industry.

The integration of AI and IoT technologies offers unprecedented opportunities to revolutionize various aspects of tourism, from personalized recommendations to real-time data collection. The research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state, challenges, and future direction of STDs in the context of AI and IoT integration. It explores various AI techniques and IoT-enabled data collection mechanisms that can enrich the traveler experience and improve destination management. However, challenges such as privacy and data security issues need to be addressed. The research also provides foresight into future technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) that can further enhance STDs. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of smarter, visitor-oriented tourism destinations. The research highlights the significance of AI in shaping STDs and emphasizes the importance of addressing ethical considerations, data quality, interpretability, and human-AI collaboration to ensure responsible and effective use of AI in the tourism industry.

The traceability system optimized the food supply chain management. Blockchain technology promises a new distributed ledger, which provides various uses by solving several traceability issues. Unfortunately, the present study does not completely address the use, opportunities, and challenges of blockchain technology in the food supply chain. Therefore, this study investigates the general knowledge regarding blockchain technology (the concept, features, and type of blockchain) and its use in the food supply chain. The findings of this study assist in gaining a better understanding and information regarding how to strengthen the traceability system in the food supply chain by optimizing the use of blockchain technology. The findings confirmed that the use of blockchain technology in the food supply chain was primarily for traceability, with public/private blockchain assisting as a popular platform. The transaction data is about the product origin information, transaction information, and product label information. The use of blockchain in the food supply chain has the benefit of enhancing food supply chain traceability and transparency. The challenges are the need for significant financial, human resources, and infrastructure investment, limited technical knowledge of stakeholders, significant product changes, the rapid development of the global supply chain, the potential for data manipulation, and policy change.
