The Challenges of Blockchain Technology Adoption in the Agro-based Industries

Blockchain is one of the latest innovations in information technology, bringing a digital revolution to many industries by increasing transparency. But this technology needs to be explored a lot as of now. Agriculture supply chain management distributes agro-based products like vegetables, fruits, pulses, and cereals. This research is conducted to identify the agro-based industries' adoption of blockchain in their supply chain for achieving sustainability. The next step towards sustainable agriculture is primarily seen as blockchain-enabled agriculture. By making supply chains transparent, technology can follow products from the point of manufacture and prevent waste and inefficiency. A structured literature review helped determine the barriers to blockchain adoption in agro-based industries. This research is unique as no survey-based research on blockchain in the agriculture supply chain using structural equation modeling has been found. The seven proposed hypotheses support the blockchain challenges for adoption in agro-based industries. The findings of this study suggest that the blockchain can bring transparency and traceability and will remove the agro-industry inefficiencies.

In recent times, with technological advancements, businesses are looking at the digital transformation to create lucrative and sustainable methodologies to gain a competitive advantage over the competitors. With the awakening of consumers and stakeholders about the visible fraud in the operational activities and supply chain, the expectations from consumers regarding the supply chain are rapidly changing. Supply chain transparency, traceability, sustainability, and resilience have gained a lot of attention in recent years to end-users which potentially enables them to trace the goods and services flow and all the processes involved in manufacturing the raw materials to the final products. Maintaining a transparent supply chain has become a necessity rather than an additional service provided to the government, consumers, and other stakeholders. Companies around the globe are shifting towards technological advancements in the supply chain for effective utilization of resources and processes to gain an advantage by provisioning visibility in the Supply Chain Management (SCM). With the ability to maintain an immutable, distributed, unalterable ledger, Blockchain can be considered as one of the revolutionizing technologies in digital supply chain management. Blockchain technology can be used to overcome potential threats and vulnerabilities by channelizing the flow of information, thereby enhancing transparency and traceability in the process. Its potential can drive the SCM operations less costly and enrich the customer experience through transparency and traceability. In this paper we have proposed a novel framewok to avoid fraud in supply chain by using blockchain technology. Blockchain technology is considered more secure, however certain vulnerabilities may be possible due to service layers provided on the top of blockchain technology and it is not because of the core technology. Further scope to implement the proposed framework in the field of supply chain management.

A Literature Review of Blockchain-Based Applications in Supply Chain

Blockchain technology is an emerging technology, and cryptocurrency is the most well-known and successful blockchain application. With the development of the concept of blockchain technology, scientists and practitioners have found the potential of blockchain technology in the supply chain, which has led to much research on blockchain applications. There have been many reviews on the subject, but most of them are specific to particular supply chains and lack specific research on published papers. This paper addresses this research gap by examining, through qualitative analysis, the study finds that blockchain applications are moving in the direction of efficient automation. Appropriate consensus algorithms in different supply chain contexts will improve efficiency while reducing costs, while smart contracts play a huge role in security. Therefore, this paper explored articles related to the topic and explored articles in recent years by keyword combination.

SURVEY ON SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT USING BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

With the advancement of blockchain in every field, it is also used in the agri-food supply chain. As the food supply chain is such a network where no one knows from where and what quality of food is transported and how long it takes to reach its destination. The blockchain helps to keep track of the complete chain with the help of distributed ledger. Each transaction, the quality of food, and the time required to reach its destination are saved. Supply chain management carries out all the processes from raw material to the final product. The supply chain is divided into several stages from the farmer to the customer. Although the blockchain food supply chain provides immutability of data and records in the network. In the proposed system, all transactions are written to blockchain which ultimately up-loads the data to the Interplanetary File Storage System (IPFS), along with the auction system for the buying and selling of the food items directly from the farmer. The storage system returns a hash of the data which is stored on the blockchain and ensures an efficient, secure, and reliable solution. Our system provides smart contracts and their algorithms to show the interaction of entities in the system.

Adoption of IoT by telecommunication companies in GCC: The role of blockchain

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become essential for business. The adoption rate of IoT has dropped recently and this could be due to security, privacy, and trust issues. Blockchain (BC) has the potential to mitigate the risk of security, privacy, and trust. However, few studies examined the integration between IoT and BC in the context of developing countries. The purpose of this study is to examine the predictors of IoT adoption by telecommunication companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In addition, the study aims to examine the moderating role of BC as well as the effect of using IoT and BC on the competitive advantage of companies. Based on technology acceptance model, social exchange theory, and resource-based view, the study proposed that security, privacy, trust, communication quality, perceived ease of use (PEOU), and perceived usefulness (PU) affect positively the adoption of IoT. BC is proposed as a moderating variable and expected with IoT to affect the competitive advantage of companies. The population includes all the telecommunication companies in GCC. Data was collected using purposive sampling from IT professionals. The results of data analysis using SmartPLS showed that security, privacy, trust, PU, and PEOU positively affected the adoption of IoT. BC and IoT adoption have a positive effect on competitive advantage. Further, BC moderated only the effect of security and privacy on the adoption of IoT. Services providers must enhance the security, privacy, and trust of IoT services by deploying BC technology. Effective integration of IoT and BC will lead to the achievement of competitive advantages.

A Review of Blockchain-based Internet of Things

The use of smart network applications based on the Internet of Things is increasing, which increases the attractiveness of malicious activities, leading to the need to increase the adequate security of these networks. In this paper, the latest recent breakthroughs in blockchain for the Internet of Things are examined in the context of electronic health (e-health), smart cities, smart transportation, and other applications in this article. Research gaps and possible solutions are discussed, such as security, connection, transparency, privacy, and the IoT’s blockchain regulatory challenges. In addition, the most important consensus algorithms used in the blockchain have been discussed, including Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, and Proof of Authority, each of which operates within certain rules.

Investment opportunity of blockchain technology in the education sector of Saudi Arabia: A systematic literature review

The primary objective of this research is to explore the literature on blockchain technology and its investment opportunity in the education sector. Studies on the investment opportunities of blockchain technology in education have remained limited and little is known about the existing state of knowledge and practice of blockchain technology in the education sector of Saudi Arabia, especially for its sustainable development. In this study, the author tried to synthesise literature on blockchain technology to understand the difficulties and prospects of this technology in Saudi Arabia. A total of 15 empirical studies from 2017 to 2020 were reviewed. The descriptive and thematic analysis identified four types of challenges of blockchain technology in the education sector. They include leaking privacy and security, processing cost, setting the boundaries, and weakening school credentials. The review also revealed several opportunities for adopting blockchain technology such as certifying identity authentication, improving learning assessment, maintaining student records, enhancing trust, and reducing costs. Implications and recommendations related to education for sustainable development are provided accordingly.

Blockchain Applications for Construction Contract Management: A Systematic Literature Review

Recently, there has been increasing interest in the research of blockchain applications in construction contract management (CCM). CCM is currently flawed, mainly lacking in information sharing, on-time payment processes, and an easily traceable supply chain. Applying blockchain-based applications can achieve autotransaction processes, create a secure information delivery environment, and promote collaboration among organizations. This research aims to discuss the application of blockchain technology in construction contract management, evaluate the benefits and drawbacks associated with blockchain application, and propose recommended strategies to facilitate the smooth implementation of blockchain technology for improved construction contract management practices. A systematic literature review is used as the main research, and content analysis is employed for analyzing the literature. The literature analysis shows that blockchain application in CCM mainly falls under three areas: information management; payment management; and supply chain management. Under each area, the current drawbacks in CCM, as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with blockchain applications, are presented. This research is one of the first attempts to examine the application of a blockchain in CCM systematically; it also provides construction contract managers or administrators with practical guidelines on leveraging blockchain technology to improve CCM practices.

Blockchain technology and internet of things: review, challenge and security concern

<span>Blockchain (BC) has received high attention from many researchers recently because it has decentralization, trusted auditability, and transparency as its main properties. BC has contributed fundamentally to the development of applications like cryptocurrencies, health care, the internet of things (IoT), and so on. The IoT is envisioned to include billions of pervasive and mission-critical sensors and actuators connected to the internet. This network of smart devices is expected to generate and have access to vast amounts of information, creating unique opportunities for new applications, but significant security and privacy issues emerge concurrently because it does not contain robust security systems. BC provides many services like privacy, security, and provenance to the systems that depends on. This research includes analyzing and a comprehensive review of BC technologies. Moreover, the proposed solutions in academia with the methodologies that used to integrate blockchain with IoT are presented. Also, the types of attacks on blockchain are collected and classified. Furthermore, the main contributions and challenges that are included in the literature are explored, then the relevant recommendations for solving the explored challenges are proposed. In conclusion, the integration of BC with IoT could produce promising results in enhancing the security and privacy of IoT environment.</span>

Understanding the Determinants of Blockchain Technology Adoption in the Construction Industry

Blockchain has great potential for facilitating the development of the construction industry but has not been widely used to this end. The objective of this study was to identify the factors affecting the adoption of blockchain in the construction industry from the technical, organizational, and environmental dimensions with the help of theories related to technology adoption. Empirical results showed that relative advantage, compatibility, competitive pressure, technological maturity, organizational readiness, and policy have an impact on intention to adopt blockchain in the construction industry through perceived usefulness or perceived ease of use. Competitive pressure has the greatest impact on the internal variables of the technology acceptance model (TAM) (0.696). Perceived cost of adoption does not have a significant effect on blockchain adoption behavior. However, in contrast to previous research, organizational readiness has a negative effect (−0.03) on perceived usefulness. The research results provide inspiration for further research on the impact mechanisms of blockchain adoption in the construction industry, as well as guidance for governments to formulate blockchain adoption policies and guidance for the widespread application of blockchain in construction.

Characteristics of Blockchain and Smart Services, for Smart Governments: A systematic review of the literature

The interest in blockchain technology has grown rapidly, day by day. This is simply because of the security and decentralization that it provides. Nevertheless, most government services around the world run on inefficient systems loaded with heavy bureaucracy. They lead to non-transparent systems and a loss of public confidence in government services. The present systematic review of the literature on this topic aims to highlight the characteristics of blockchain technology that demonstrate its uniqueness, together with the characteristics of the smart government services that are required for efficient service delivery. It was found that the dominant characteristics of blockchain technology that are expected to provide the highest value for customers are decentralization and the capacity to be shared and public, whereas the most desired characteristics for the efficient service delivery of smart government services are speed, trust and participation. The paper went on to examine how the use of blockchain technology in government services is impacting on their delivery to customers by using examples from all around the world and to conduct a SWOT analysis of the use of blockchain in the government sector. Its findings are expected to help governments to develop a blockchain strategy that helps smart government services to adopt blockchain successfully.

Strengthening Supply Chain Visibility With Blockchain: A PRISMA-Based Review

Over the last 5 years, research into the use of blockchain technology in supply chains (SCs) has increased significantly. This is because many firms are faced with the necessity of enhancing SC visibility not just to fulfill statutory obligations, but also to streamline operations, assure the quality of deliverables, and ensure the sustainability of activities. This review article provides a summary of all scientific work published since 2016, with a special emphasis on the business management & accounting and decision science domains, in order to better comprehend the constantly rising knowledge clusters linked with this topic. The prominent contributors and knowledge clusters were identified using suitable bibliometric algorithms on a review corpus of 308 articles extracted from the SCOPUS database. There are five identified knowledge clusters: 1) blockchain for food SC transparency, 2) distributed ledger for sustainable SCs, 3) traceability systems using smart contracts, 4) internet of things for logistics, and 5) the emergence of Ethereum and hyperledger in SCs. This scholarly assessment, in conjunction with PageRank analysis and content mining, assisted in identifying research articles that are prominent in each cluster, which in turn helped in formulating future research avenues for aspiring researchers.

Examining the Factors Affecting the Adoption of Blockchain Technology in the Banking Sector: An Extended UTAUT Model

Technology innovation has dramatically transformed banks over time. Digital innovation in the banking sector began with the introduction of money to replace barter systems, and then gradually replaced wax seals with digital signatures. One such disruptive innovation that is transforming the banking sector around the world is blockchain technology (BCT). The banking sector in India has also started adopting blockchain technology in various financial transactions. However, they are encountering some difficulties in adapting to and implementing this new technology. The successful and speedy adoption of blockchain in banking largely depends on the users’ intention to use the services. Therefore, this study extended “the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology” (UTAUT) to understand the significant predictors of the bankers’ intention to use blockchain technology. The data was collected from leading banking institutions and FinTech firms in the country to empirically test and validate the extended model. The results found that facilitating conditions, performance expectancy, and initial trust, are the significant antecedents to predicting the bankers’ intention to use blockchain in banking transactions. The study also established the significant mediating role of initial trust in predicting usage intention to use blockchain. This study’s results would help government authorities, decision-makers, and technocrats to improve banking instructions for the speedy and smooth adoption of blockchain technology. The study suggested an extended UTAUT model that incorporates contextual factors based on the scope and usage of blockchain in Indian banking activities. The study helped to identify the key factors influencing blockchain adoption among Indian bankers. The proposed model and the findings make more sense in promoting the adoption of blockchain in the Indian banking sector.

A comprehensive and bibliometric review on the blockchain-enabled IoT technology for designing a secure supply chain management system

Abstract Blockchain is a well-known prominent technology that has gotten a lot of interest beyond the financial industry, attracting researchers and practitioners from numerous businesses and fields. Specific uses of blockchain in supply chain management (SCM) are addressed in business practice. By combining two perspectives on blockchain in SCM, this study provides comprehensive knowledge in this field using a bibliometric approach. We will explore the worldwide research trend in related topic areas. By collecting data from the Web of Science, we collected 400 articles related to our research topic from 2016 until early 2021. We eliminated research in the form of technical reports, editorials, comments, and consultancy articles to maintain the quality of the data gathering. VOSviewer is used to create visualization maps based on text and bibliographic information. The examination uncovered helpful information, such as annual publishing and citation patterns, the top research topic, the top authors, and the most supporting funding organizations in this field.

DELINEATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY IN FINANCE: A SCIENTOMETRIC VIEW

Blockchain technology has attracted a lot of attention due to its revolutionary potential to upend the established economic structures, leading to a deluge of literature on the topic. Academics and business leaders alike are eager to see this technology used in the financial industry, although its full potential and limitations are currently unknown. To bridge this knowledge gap, 3312 records from the Dimensions database were obtained between 2014 and 2022 and used for bibliometrics and network analysis on the subject of blockchain technology in the financial sector. This analysis articulates the various potentials of blockchain literature as well as its adoption by various countries and authors, collaboration patterns, and applications of blockchain in finance using the visual mapping technique provided by VOSviewer. The top two innovators in the field, China and the USA, have used blockchain more extensively in financial research. Furthermore, the results show that the coverage of blockchain in finance has exploded in the last three years. Although India ranks third in documentation, behind China and the USA, it is lacking in citations and networking opportunities. The results, which identify important journals and authors in this field, will aid future researchers in better understanding the literature and conducting a PRISMA-based systematic review. This research is unique because it is the first bibliometric study to use the Dimensions AI database to look into how blockchain technology can be used in the financial sector.

A Review of Contemporary Governance Challenges in Oman: Can Blockchain Technology Be Part of Sustainable Solutions?

Oman is considering adopting the latest e-governance technology, including Blockchain-based. While much research was conducted into the benefits and risks of Blockchain-based in information systems and finance fields, fewer researchers investigated the opportunities and risks associated with adopting Blockchain-based frameworks for governance and public administration, especially in highly bureaucratic, centralized rentier states, such as Oman. As the first phase of an exploratory sequential mixed-methods study, our purpose was to identify key governance problems in contemporary Oman and analyze each problem against evidence drawn from the relevant parts of the Blockchain-based and e-governance literature to evaluate the potential utility, risks and limitations associated with adopting block-chained e-governance solutions in the Sultanate. Our initial results indicate that there are advantages for states, such as Oman, from being an early mover into block-chained e-governance systems, including greater cost efficiency, drastically improved accuracy and reliability of information systems, transparency and accountability of public services, and an upgrade in the overall level of legitimacy and public trust in the institutions of governance. However, more research into the risks related to reconciling block-chained systems with the dynamics of labor, tax reforms and centralized authority in a rentier social contract is required.

Decentralized Fundraising Application Using Blockchain

It is critical for a donor to understand where and how their money is being used. This will not only make them happy, but it will also encourage them to donate again and propose or publicise donations, resulting in a large donation amount for the needy. This paper proposes a decentralized application which utilizes blockchain and smart contracts which is built with the aim of helping the needy and underprivileged people by providing a platform that is secured, flawless, easy to use and transparent with the funds. Fundraising applications have come into existence to help people and communities alike. But these applications have been far from perfect. People have shown general distrust in a third-party to securely handle their funds before reaching the people donations were meant for. Some reports of misuse of collected funds have worsened the situation. The lack of transparency and involvement of third-party has hindered people from donating at times and have left many needy people without any help. To combat these issues, we have decided to build a fundraising website accessible to everyone whose working will be transparent. Registered users, once verified, can donate to various charity drives and funds and also ask for funds when in need. using Machine learning recommendations of similar fundraisers are made who like to donate to some particular charity drives. To acheive transparency, the blockchain technology is used to store records of donations made by the users. Decentralization of fundraising process also eliminates involvement of any third-party group.

Cold Supply Chain Planning including Smart Contracts: An Intelligent Blockchain-based approach

Vaccinating the global population against Covid-19 is one of the biggest supply chain management challenges humanity has ever faced. Rapid supply of Covid-19 vaccines is essential for successful global immunization, but its effectiveness depends on a transparent supply chain that can be monitored. In this research, we have proposed an approach based on blockchain technology, which is used to ensure seamless distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine with transparency, data integrity, and full traceability of the supply chain to reduce risk, ensure safety, and immutability. A vaccine supply chain needs to update the status of the vaccine at every stage, and any problem in the supply and distribution path can lead to irreparable damage. Currently, the research conducted on the use of blockchain in supply chains is still in the early stages. In this paper, the use of blockchain technology to monitor the vaccine supply and distribution system will be investigated. A model close to reality of today's vaccine supply chains in developing countries is considered and then a new intelligent system for vaccine monitoring in the vaccine supply chain is designed based on the considered model. Also, smart contracts based on a blockchain network is designed to check consumer vaccination records as well as vaccine circulation from beginning to end. The implementation and design of the vaccine supply chain is done using smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain network. Additionally, the system has been tested on both local networks, the HardHat suite and Rinkbey's test network. The system has also been developed to work seamlessly when it is using an integrated IoT chip that can automatically update a batch's location, temperature, and other physical conditions periodically.

Implications of Blockchain Application to Accounting Education and Accounting Practice

Accounting is part of the information system of a company that generates the most important information for the decision-making process. This process should be supported by new technologies to respond to all business requirements. Disruptive technologies change the way of performing business transactions and their implementation in business practice was notably accelerated by the pandemic. In this context, Blockchain technology has been articulated as the future of the accounting profession and there is a growing body of research regarding the impact of the blockchain on accounting practice and the accountancy profession. Many advantages arise from blockchain technology's distinctiveness, but also many risks that need special attention. Consequently, evolving conditions require professional accountants around the world to master new skills related to emerging information technologies. Being accustomed to information technologies is one of the basic prerequisites for the quality service that professional accountants offer to clients. Accounting education, especially at universities, has an important role in forming competent professional accountants and enabling required skills that are an essential part of professional competence. Accounting education has a challenging role in this context to incorporate and transfer knowledge regarding new technologies. This paper aims to analyse the recent research to investigate the impact of blockchain technology on accounting practice. The paper also focuses on the analyses of means of the inclusion of blockchain technology into accounting education and curriculum, by conducting a literature review of relevant sources. Research findings enable further understanding of the implications of blockchain technology in the accounting context, both for accounting practice and accounting education. Results can serve accounting educators since this topic is not sufficiently explored and needs further analysis.
