Developing a BIM Single Source of Truth Prototype Using Blockchain Technology

Amer A. Hijazi, Srinath Perera, Ali Mohammed Alashwal, Rodrigo N. Calheiros

Blockchain technology has been proposed as a potential solution for coordinating information and trust to aid the development of a single source of the truth data model, going beyond peer-to-peer cash transactions. It is, therefore, argued that the construction supply chain (CSC) will resolve issues related to the lack of reliable platforms for construction and asset management operations once blockchain technology and Building Information Modelling (BIM) are integrated. Though there is no longer any debate about the importance of integrating blockchain technology with BIM, there is still a lack of academic literature on its proof of concept. This study aims to create a thorough proof of concept for integrating blockchain technology and BIM for supply chain data delivery. It demonstrated a step-by-step methodology starting from understanding the current business scenario and proposing logical system architecture, followed by selecting a blockchain platform, designing system architecture related to technologies, prototyping, and evaluating through a virtual business scenario. The software prototype presented in this paper helps establish the technological viability of a single source of the truth data model for integrating blockchain technology and BIM. The supply chain data delivery for handover was considered in this software prototype. However, the process used to create this software prototype can be replicated in future work on blockchain technology-based built environment applications or digital transformation in the built environment research.

Blockchain-Based E-Commerce: An Evaluation

Ebru Aydoğan, Muhammed Fatih Aydemir

The e-commerce sector has grown beyond predictions with the help of the most recent technological developments, changes in consumer preferences, and the COVID-19 pandemic. E-commerce activities assume a subsidiary role of brick-and-mortar shops with the benefits it offers to all parties, which have also resulted in new problems such as privacy, security, transparency, and costs, unlike traditional businesses. Blockchain technology is among the promising technologies in solving the problems of the e-commerce sector with its decentralized structure that does not require third-party intermediaries, and its features (such as privacy, immutability, security, transparency, and auditability). In this study—which examines, under five titles, the benefits that blockchain can offer to e-commerce—it is concluded that blockchain can reshape e-commerce activities by enabling integrated e-commerce systems that include all parties and offering low transaction costs, high transaction speed, traceability of transactions, strong security standards, and low risks. In this direction, blockchain-based e-commerce platforms can push existing e-commerce platforms into the background.

Effects of supply chain transparency, alignment, adaptability, and agility on blockchain adoption in supply chain among SMEs

Mohammad Iranmanesh, Parisa Maroufkhani, Shahla Asadi, Morteza Ghobakhloo · 6 authors

This study aims to investigate the extent to which the contributions of blockchain technology to supply chain parameters influence blockchain adoption among SMEs. Drawing on contingency theory, the study investigates the moderating effect of market turbulence. The data were collected from 204 SMEs in Malaysia’s manufacturing sector and analysed using the partial least squares technique. The results showed that the intention of SMEs’ managers to adopt blockchain is influenced by the contributions of blockchain to supply chain transparency and agility. Supply chain transparency, alignment, adaptability, and agility are interrelated. Market turbulence moderates positively the association between agility and intention to adopt blockchain. This study extends the literature by decomposing the concept of relative advantages and investigating the influences of blockchain benefits on blockchain adoption. The moderating effect of market turbulence indicates that the influence of blockchain on agility is more important for SMEs operating in a turbulent environment than the SMEs in a stable market. The findings help the policymakers and blockchain vendors in developing effective plans and strategies to speed up the adoption of blockchain among SMEs. Furthermore, the results give confidence to the managers and owners of SMEs that blockchain can be a valuable competitive advantage source.

Blockchain in Human Resource Management to Hire the Right Candidate

Md. Mijanur Rahman, Md. Fahad Mollik, Mahmudul Hasan, Moriom Akter

Nowadays, blockchain technology is a great and immersive technology like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the internet of things. Blockchain is a complex and secure distributed ledger system that stores data with other information such as timestamp, and hash value in a block, and each block is connected with the other. With the help of blockchain technology, many problems can be solved. After conceptualizing blockchain technology, it has changed many sectors, such as health, education, and business, as well as human resource management (HRM). However, still, there are some gaps in this area. So in this paper, we are going to investigate and solve those. Hiring employees is a vital role of the human resource (HR) but it is not so easy to hire the right candidate. To hire the right candidate, checking the performance appraisals of his previous organization is a great method to know about him. HR often needs to know the candidate's performance appraisals from his previous organization as feedback, which is not as easy and trustworthy as the traditional way. A performance appraisal is a systematic way to review or evaluate an employee's organizational performance. This could be an incredible, reliable system for an organization's HR. In this paper, a blockchain-based performance appraisal system will be used to check the performance of an employee of a previous organization. This system will be trustworthy, secure, and anonymous.

Factors affecting the blockchain application in construction management in China: an ANP-SWOT hybrid approach

Yu Gao, Oskar Casasayas, Jiayuan Wang, Xiaoxiao Xu

As a decentralised ledger and data management technology, blockchain has attracted increasing interest and has been effectively applied in various areas. Despite its promising potential, there are few studies proposing effective strategies for promoting blockchain, particularly in providing a strategic analysis of blockchain in China's construction management. This study aims to investigate the external and internal environments of blockchain application and determine the roadmaps and strategies for blockchain application in construction management in China. A strength, weaknesses, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis is employed to draw a panorama of the blockchain development status. Six roadmaps and strategies for blockchain application are proposed. By using the Analytic Network Process (ANP), a quantitative analysis was conducted to determine the ranking of SWOT sub-factors and roadmaps and strategies. The results show that ‘traceability of information’, ‘high application threshold’, ‘national policy support’, and ‘low informatization level of the construction industry’ are the most important sub-factors in strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats respectively. The best roadmaps and strategies are ‘improving the informatization level of the construction industry’, followed by ‘promoting the technological innovation of blockchain’ and ‘providing standard’. This study facilitates an in-depth understanding of the blockchain application in China's construction management. It will not only help researchers to conduct targeted blockchain research for more efficient project management, but also help practitioners to develop effective strategies for adopting blockchain.

Supply chain finance: What are the challenges in the adoption of blockchain technology?

Yutong Bai, Yang Liu, Wee Meng Yeo

As an emerging information technology, blockchain has aroused extensive discussions around the world and been suggested as a solution to address current issues in supply chain finance (SCF). The Chinese government also attaches great importance to this technology, and many Chinese state-owned enterprises have invested in establishing their own blockchain research and development centres. However, there is a lack of studies on identifying challenges when deploying this technology; theoretical framework and conceptual exposition are also scarcely seen. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the challenges and obstacles in the adoption of blockchain technology in SCF. An exploratory case study of a Chinese state-owned enterprise was conducted to build up an initial conceptual framework. Semi-structured interview was applied to collect data from the case firm's employees, top management, and technical specialists. The results of the analysis indicate that in the adoption of blockchain technology, there are technological, operational, and other challenges. From a technological perspective, framework identification, cross-chain interoperability, and data governance are major barriers; whereas, from an operational perspective, the new business process and transformation in the entire supply chain are identified as challenges. Besides, other obstacles such as the elimination of jobs and regulatory issues are also not neglectable. This study contributes to research on blockchain and supply chains by shedding light on the challenges of blockchain adoption through an exploratory case study of a Chinese state-owned enterprise. A conceptual framework was generated as a basis for future research, and the findings also provide insights for companies that may or are planning to adopt blockchain technology.

An exploratory study of the perceptions of auditors on the impact on Blockchain technology in the United Arab Emirates

Abdollah Mohammad Parmoodeh, Esinath Ndiweni, Yasser Barghathi

The purpose of this paper is to explore the prospects of blockchain technology (BCT) on audit practice. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with practitioners from the Big Four and non‐Big Four firms; their responses were analysed thematically. The findings are significant regarding the three main themes identified: namely, audit practice, procedures and the challenges associated with the adoption of BCT. The adoption of BCT has the potential to impact audit procedures to a certain extent. The interviewees believed that BCT would transfer Audit 3.0 to Audit 4.0. For instance, external confirmations could be enhanced by the move towards a more automated verification process. In addition, the audit budget time could be decreased with the help of this technology in the long run. The need for physical observation could be diminished because of this technology, as it could track observations on a real‐time basis. This technology could also facilitate analytical procedures, as it has the potential to incorporate other analytical tools simultaneously. Furthermore, it could reduce the costs associated with fraud detection to a great extent, as it provides a tamper‐proof, immutable audit trail.
