This paper proposes a new approach for change point detection in multivariate Hawkes processes using Fréchet statistic of a network. The method splits the point process into overlapping windows, estimates kernel matrices in each window, and reconstructs the signed Laplacians by treating the kernel matrices as the adjacency matrices of the causal network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through experiments on both simulated and cryptocurrency datasets. Our results show that our method is capable of accurately detecting and characterizing changes in the causal structure of multivariate Hawkes processes, and may have potential applications in fields such as finance and neuroscience. The proposed method is an extension of previous work on Fréchet statistics in point process settings and represents an important contribution to the field of change point detection in multivariate point processes.

Bitcoin as a cryptocurrency has been one of the most important digital coins and the first decentralized digital currency. Deep neural networks, on the other hand, has shown promising results recently; however, we require huge amount of high-quality data to leverage their power. There are some techniques such as augmentation that can help us with increasing the dataset size, but we cannot exploit them on historical bitcoin data. As a result, we propose a shallow Bidirectional-LSTM (Bi-LSTM) model, fed with feature engineered data using our proposed method to forecast bitcoin closing prices in a daily time frame. We compare the performance with that of other forecasting methods, and show that with the help of the proposed feature engineering method, a shallow deep neural network outperforms other popular price forecasting models.
What are the optimal times for an Internet of Things (IoT) device to act as a blockchain miner? The aim is to minimize the energy consumed by low-power IoT devices that log their data into a secure (tamper-proof) distributed ledger. We formulate a multiple stopping time Bayesian sequential detection problem to address energy-efficient blockchain mining for IoT devices. The objective is to identify $L$ optimal stops for mining, thereby maximizing the probability of successfully adding a block to the blockchain; we also present a model to optimize the number of stops (mining instants). The formulation is equivalent to a multiple stopping time POMDP. Since POMDPs are in general computationally intractable to solve, we show mathematically using submodularity arguments that the optimal mining policy has a useful structure: 1) it is monotone in belief space, and 2) it exhibits a threshold structure, which divides the belief space into two connected sets. Exploiting the structural results, we formulate a computationally-efficient linear mining policy for the blockchain-enabled IoT device. We present a policy gradient technique to optimize the parameters of the linear mining policy. Finally, we use synthetic and real Bitcoin datasets to study the performance of our proposed mining policy. We demonstrate the energy efficiency achieved by the optimal linear mining policy in contrast to other heuristic strategies.
UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is rapidly gaining traction in various human activities and has become an integral component of the satellite-air-ground-sea (SAGS) integrated network. As high-speed moving objects, UAVs not only have extremely strict requirements for communication delay, but also cannot be maliciously controlled as a weapon by the attacker. Therefore, an efficient and secure communication method designed for UAV networks is necessary. We propose a communication mechanism ESCM. For high efficiency, ESCM provides a routing protocol based on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to accelerate communications between UAVs. Meanwhile, we use blockchain to guarantee the security of UAV networks. However, blockchain has unstable links in high-mobility networks resulting in low consensus efficiency and high communication overhead. Consequently, ESCM introduces digital twin (DT), which transforms the UAV network into a static network by mapping UAVs from the physical world into Cyberspace. This virtual UAV network is called CyberUAV. Then, in CyberUAV, we design a blockchain consensus based on network coding, named Proof of Network Coding (PoNC). Analysis and simulation show that the above modules in ESCM have advantages over existing schemes. Through ablation studies, we demonstrate that these modules are indispensable for efficient and secure communication of UAV networks.

Due to advantages in security and privacy, blockchain is considered a key enabling technology to support 6G communications. Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) and RAFT are seen as the most applicable consensus mechanisms (CMs) in blockchain-enabled wireless networks. However, previous studies on PBFT and RAFT rarely consider the channel performance of the physical layer, such as path loss and channel fading, resulting in research results that are far from real networks. Additionally, 6G communications will widely deploy high-frequency signals such as terahertz (THz) and millimeter wave (mmWave), while performances of PBFT and RAFT are still unknown when these signals are transmitted in wireless PBFT or RAFT networks. Therefore, it is urgent to study the performance of non-ideal wireless PBFT and RAFT networks with THz and mmWave signals, to better make PBFT and RAFT play a role in the 6G era. In this paper, we study and compare the performance of THz and mmWave signals in non-ideal wireless PBFT and RAFT networks, considering Rayleigh Fading (RF) and close-in Free Space (FS) reference distance path loss. Performance is evaluated by five metrics: consensus success rate, latency, throughput, reliability gain, and energy consumption. Meanwhile, we find and derive that there is a maximum distance between two nodes that can make CMs inevitably successful, and it is named the active distance of CMs. The research results analyze the performance of non-ideal wireless PBFT and RAFT networks, and provide important references for the future transmission of THz and mmWave signals in PBFT and RAFT networks.

In the traditional mobile edge computing (MEC) system, the availability of MEC services is greatly limited for the edge users of the cell due to serious signal attenuation and inter-cell interference. User-centric MEC (UC-MEC) can be seen as a promising solution to address this issue. In UC-MEC, each user is served by a dedicated access point (AP) cluster enabled with MEC capability instead of a single MEC server, however, at the expense of more energy consumption and greater privacy risks. To achieve efficient and reliable resource utilization with user-centric services, we propose an energy efficient blockchain-enabled UC-MEC system where blockchain operations and resource optimization are jointly performed. Firstly, we design a resource-aware, reliable, replicated, redundant, and fault-tolerant (R-RAFT) consensus mechanism to implement secure and reliable resource trading. Then, an optimization framework based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to minimize the total energy consumed by wireless transmission, consensus and task computing, where APs clustering, computing resource allocation and bandwidth allocation are jointly considered. Simulation results show superiority of the proposed UC-MEC system over reference schemes, at most 33.96% reduction in the total delay and 48.77% reduction in the total energy consumption.

Satellite-ground integrated digital twin networks (SGIDTNs) are regarded as innovative network architectures for reducing network congestion, enabling nearly-instant data mapping from the physical world to digital systems, and offering ubiquitous intelligence services to terrestrial users. However, the challenges, such as the pricing policy, the stochastic task arrivals, the time-varying satellite locations, mutual channel interference, and resource scheduling mechanisms between the users and cloud servers, are critical for improving quality of service in SGIDTNs. Hence, we establish a blockchain-aided Stackelberg game model for maximizing the pricing profits and network throughput in terms of minimizing overhead of privacy protection, thus performing computation offloading, decreasing channel interference, and improving privacy protection. Next, we propose a Lyapunov stability theory-based model-agnostic metalearning aided multi-agent deep federated reinforcement learning (MAML-MADFRL) framework for optimizing the CPU cycle frequency, channel selection, task-offloading decision, block size, and cloud server price, which facilitate the integration of communication, computation, and block resources. Subsequently, the extensive performance analyses show that the proposed MAMLMADFRL algorithm can strengthen the privacy protection via the transaction verification mechanism, approach the optimal time average penalty, and fulfill the long-term average queue size via lower computational complexity. Finally, our simulation results indicate that the proposed MAML-MADFRL learning framework is superior to the existing baseline methods in terms of network throughput, channel interference, cloud server profits, and privacy overhead.

Over the years, the popularity and usage of wearable Internet of Things (IoT) devices in several healthcare services are increased. Among the services that benefit from the usage of such devices is predictive analysis, which can improve early diagnosis in e-health. However, due to the limitations of wearable IoT devices, challenges in data privacy, service integrity, and network structure adaptability arose. To address these concerns, we propose a platform using federated learning and private blockchain technology within a fog-IoT network. These technologies have privacy-preserving features securing data within the network. We utilized the fog-IoT network’s distributive structure to create an adaptive network for wearable IoT devices. We designed a testbed to examine the proposed platform’s ability to preserve the integrity of a classifier. According to experimental results, the introduced implementation can effectively preserve a patient’s privacy and a predictive service’s integrity. We further investigated the contributions of other technologies to the security and adaptability of the IoT network. Overall, we proved the feasibility of our platform in addressing significant security and privacy challenges of wearable IoT devices in predictive healthcare through analysis, simulation, and experimentation.

Blockchain has been deemed as a promising solution for providing security and privacy protection in the next-generation wireless networks. Large-scale concurrent access for massive wireless devices to accomplish the consensus procedure may consume prohibitive communication and computing resources, and thus may limit the application of blockchain in wireless conditions. As most existing consensus protocols are designed for wired networks, directly apply them for wireless users may exhaust their scarce spectrum and computing resources. In this paper, we propose AirCon, a byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus protocol for wireless users via the over-the-air computation. The novelty of AirCon is to take advantage of the intrinsic characteristic of the wireless channel and automatically achieve the consensus in the physical layer while receiving from the end users, which greatly reduces the communication and computational cost that would be caused by traditional consensus protocols. We implement the AirCon protocol integrated into an LTE system and provide solutions to the critical issues for over-the-air consensus implementation. Experimental results are provided to show the feasibility of the proposed protocol, and simulation results to show the performance of the AirCon protocol under different wireless conditions.
Classifying brain signals collected by wearable Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, especially brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), is one of the fastest-growing areas of research. However, research has mostly ignored the secure storage and privacy protection issues of collected personal neurophysiological data. Therefore, in this article, we try to bridge this gap and propose a secure privacy-preserving protocol for implementing BCI applications. We first transformed brain signals into images and used generative adversarial network to generate synthetic signals to protect data privacy. Subsequently, we applied the paradigm of transfer learning for signal classification. The proposed method was evaluated by a case study and results indicate that real electroencephalogram data augmented with artificially generated samples provide superior classification performance. In addition, we proposed a blockchain-based scheme and developed a prototype on Ethereum, which aims to make storing, querying and sharing personal neurophysiological data and analysis reports secure and privacy-aware. The rights of three main transaction bodies - construction workers, BCI service providers and project managers - are described and the advantages of the proposed system are discussed. We believe this paper provides a well-rounded solution to safeguard private data against cyber-attacks, level the playing field for BCI application developers, and to the end improve professional well-being in the industry.

With the development of blockchain and communication techniques, the Metaverse is considered as a promising next-generation Internet paradigm, which enables the connection between reality and the virtual world. The key to rendering a virtual world is to provide users with immersive experiences and virtual avatars, which is based on virtual reality (VR) technology and high data transmission rate. However, current VR devices require intensive computation and communication, and users suffer from high delay while using wireless VR devices. To build the connection between reality and the virtual world with current technologies, mobile augmented reality (MAR) is a feasible alternative solution due to its cheaper communication and computation cost. This paper proposes an MAR-based connection model for the Metaverse, and proposes a communication resources allocation algorithm based on outer approximation (OA) to achieve the best utility. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is able to provide users with basic MAR services for the Metaverse, and outperforms the benchmark greedy algorithm.
The safety-critical scenarios of artificial intelligence (AI), such as autonomous driving, Internet of Things, smart healthcare, etc., have raised critical requirements of trustworthy AI to guarantee the privacy and security with reliable decisions. As a nascent branch for trustworthy AI, federated learning (FL) has been regarded as a promising privacy preserving framework for training a global AI model over collaborative devices. However, security challenges still exist in the FL framework, e.g., Byzantine attacks from malicious devices, and model tampering attacks from malicious server, which will degrade or destroy the accuracy of trained global AI model. In this paper, we shall propose a decentralized blockchain based FL (B-FL) architecture by using a secure global aggregation algorithm to resist malicious devices, and deploying practical Byzantine fault tolerance consensus protocol with high effectiveness and low energy consumption among multiple edge servers to prevent model tampering from the malicious server. However, to implement B-FL system at the network edge, multiple rounds of cross-validation in blockchain consensus protocol will induce long training latency. We thus formulate a network optimization problem that jointly considers bandwidth and power allocation for the minimization of long-term average training latency consisting of progressive learning rounds. We further propose to transform the network optimization problem as a Markov decision process and leverage the deep reinforcement learning based algorithm to provide high system performance with low computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that B-FL can resist malicious attacks from edge devices and servers, and the training latency of B-FL can be significantly reduced by deep reinforcement learning based algorithm compared with baseline algorithms.
Hypoglycemia is an unpleasant phenomenon caused by low blood glucose. The disease can lead a person to death or a high level of body damage. To avoid significant damage, patients need sugar. The research aims at implementing an automatic system to detect hypoglycemia and perform automatic sugar injections to save a life. Receiving the benefits of the internet of things (IoT), the sensor data was transferred using the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) protocol. To ensure the safety of health-related data, blockchain technology was utilized. The glucose sensor and smartwatch data were processed via Fog and sent to the cloud. A Random Forest algorithm was proposed and utilized to decide hypoglycemic events. When the hypoglycemic event was detected, the system sent a notification to the mobile application and auto-injection device to push the condensed sugar into the victims body. XGBoost, k-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree were implemented to compare the proposed models performance. The random forest performed 0.942 testing accuracy, better than other models in detecting hypoglycemic events. The systems performance was measured in several conditions, and satisfactory results were achieved. The system can benefit hypoglycemia patients to survive this disease.

The convergence of mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain is transforming the current computing services in wireless Internet-of-Things networks, by enabling task offloading with security enhancement based on blockchain mining. Yet the existing approaches for these enabling technologies are isolated, providing only tailored solutions for specific services and scenarios. To fill this gap, we propose a novel cooperative task offloading and blockchain mining (TOBM) scheme for a blockchain-based MEC system, where each edge device not only handles computation tasks but also deals with block mining for improving system utility. To address the latency issues caused by the blockchain operation in MEC, we develop a new Proof-of-Reputation consensus mechanism based on a lightweight block verification strategy. To accommodate the highly dynamic environment and high-dimensional system state space, we apply a novel distributed deep reinforcement learning-based approach by using a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed TOBM scheme in terms of enhanced system reward, improved offloading utility with lower blockchain mining latency, and better system utility, compared to the existing cooperative and non-cooperative schemes. The paper concludes with key technical challenges and possible directions for future blockchain-based MEC research.

This article considers an Internet-of-Things (IoT) blockchain wireless network consisting of a leader node and various follower nodes which together implement the reliable, replicated, redundant, and fault-tolerant (RAFT) consensus protocol to verify a blockchain transaction, as requested by a blockchain client. Furthermore, two kinds of active attacks, that is, jamming and impersonation, are considered on the IoT blockchain network due to the presence of multipleactivemalicious nodes in the close vicinity. When the IoT network is under a jamming attack, we utilize the stochastic geometry tool to derive the closed-form expressions for the coverage probabilities for both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) IoT transmissions (which eventually translate to the blockchain transaction success rate). On the other hand, when the IoT network is under an impersonation attack, we propose a novel method that enables a receive IoT node to exploit the pathloss of a transmit IoT node as its fingerprint to implement a binary hypothesis test for transmit node identification. To this end, we also provide the closed-form expressions for the probabilities of false alarms, missed detection, and misclassification. Finally, we present detailed simulation results that indicate the following: 1) the coverage probability (and hence the blockchain transaction success rate) improves as the jammers’ locations move away from the IoT network and 2) the three error probabilities decrease (i.e., chances of corruption of the blockchain ledger data due to false data injection by malicious node decrease) as a function of the quality of the link between the transmit and receive IoT nodes.

In this paper, we study a new latency optimization problem for blockchain-based federated learning (BFL) in multi-server edge computing. In this system model, distributed mobile devices (MDs) communicate with a set of edge servers (ESs) to handle both machine learning (ML) model training and block mining simultaneously. To assist the ML model training for resource-constrained MDs, we develop an offloading strategy that enables MDs to transmit their data to one of the associated ESs. We then propose a new decentralized ML model aggregation solution at the edge layer based on a consensus mechanism to build a global ML model via peer-to-peer (P2P)-based blockchain communications. Blockchain builds trust among MDs and ESs to facilitate reliable ML model sharing and cooperative consensus formation, and enables rapid elimination of manipulated models caused by poisoning attacks. We formulate latency-aware BFL as an optimization aiming to minimize the system latency via joint consideration of the data offloading decisions, MDs' transmit power, channel bandwidth allocation for MDs' data offloading, MDs' computational allocation, and hash power allocation. Given the mixed action space of discrete offloading and continuous allocation variables, we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning scheme with a parameterized advantage actor critic algorithm. We theoretically characterize the convergence properties of BFL in terms of the aggregation delay, mini-batch size, and number of P2P communication rounds. Our numerical evaluation demonstrates the superiority of our proposed scheme over baselines in terms of model training efficiency, convergence rate, system latency, and robustness against model poisoning attacks.
This article investigates computation offloading in blockchain-empowered Internet of Things (IoT), where the task data uploading link from sensors to a base station (BS) is protected by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted physical-layer security (PLS). After receiving task data, the BS allocates computational resources provided by mobile-edge computing (MEC) servers to help sensors perform tasks. Existing blockchain-based computation offloading schemes usually focus on network performance improvements, such as energy consumption minimization (ECM) or latency minimization, and neglect the Gas fee for computation offloading, resulting in the dissatisfaction of high Gas providers. Also, the secrecy rate during the data uploading process cannot be measured by a steady value because of the time-varying characteristics of IRS-based wireless channels, thereby computational resources allocation with a secrecy rate measured before data uploading is inappropriate. In this article, we design a Gas-oriented computation offloading scheme that guarantees a low degree of dissatisfaction of sensors, while reducing energy consumption. Also, we deduce the ergodic secrecy rate of IRS-assisted PLS transmission that can represent the global secrecy performance to allocate computational resources. The simulations show that the proposed scheme has lower energy consumption compared to existing schemes and ensures that the node paying higher Gas gets stronger computational resources.
This paper investigates an endogenous security architecture for computation offloading in the Internet of Things (IoT), where the blockchain technology enables the traceability of malicious behaviors, and the task data uploading link from sensors to small base station (SBS) is protected by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted physical layer security (PLS). After receiving task data, the SBS allocates computational resources to help sensors perform the task. The existing computation offloading schemes usually focus on network performance improvement, such as energy consumption minimization, and neglect the Gas fee paid by sensors, resulting in the discontent of high Gas payers. Here, we design a Gas-oriented computation offloading scheme that guarantees the degree of satisfaction of sensors, while aiming to reduce energy consumption. Also, we deduce the ergodic secrecy rate of IRS-assisted PLS transmission that can represent the global secrecy performance to allocate computational resources. The simulations show that the proposed scheme ensures that the node paying higher Gas gets stronger computational resources, and just raises $4\%$ energy consumption in comparison with energy consumption minimization schemes.
The paper develops a blockchain protocol for a social media network (BE-SMN) to mitigate the spread of misinformation. BE-SMN is derived based on the information transmission-time distribution by modeling the misinformation transmission as double-spend attacks on blockchain. The misinformation distribution is then incorporated into the SIR (Susceptible, Infectious, or Recovered) model, which substitutes the single rate parameter in the traditional SIR model. Then, on a multi-community network, we study the propagation of misinformation numerically and show that the proposed blockchain enabled social media network outperforms the baseline network in flattening the curve of the infected population.
