An Efficient CPA-Secure Encryption Scheme with Equality Test

Han Jiang, Qiuliang Xu, Changyuan Liu, Zhe Liu

In this paper, we propose a CPA-Secure encryption scheme with equality test. Unlike other public key solutions, in our scheme, only the data owner can encrypt the message and get the comparable ciphertext, and only the tester with token who can perform the equality test. Our encryption scheme is based on multiplicative homomorphism of ElGamal Encryption and Non Interactive Zero Knowledge proof of Discrete Log. We proof that the proposed scheme is OW-CPA security under the attack of the adversary who has equality test token, and IND-CPA security under the attack of adversary who can not test the equality. The proposed scheme only suppose to compare two ciphertexts encrypted by same user, though it is less of flexibility, it is efficient and more suitable for data outsourcing scenario.

Post-Quantum Zero-Knowledge and Signatures from Symmetric-Key Primitives.

Melissa Chase, David Derler, Steven Goldfeder, Claudio Orlandi · 8 authors

We propose a new class of post-quantum digital signature schemes that: (a) derive their security entirely from the security of symmetric-key primitives, believed to be quantum-secure, and (b) have extremely small keypairs, and, (c) are highly parametrizable. In our signature constructions, the public key is an image y=f(x) of a one-way function f and secret key x. A signature is a non-interactive zero-knowledge proof of x, that incorporates a message to be signed. For this proof, we leverage recent progress of Giacomelli et al. (USENIX’16) in constructing an efficient sigma protocol for statements over general circuits. We improve this sigma protocol to reduce proof sizes by a factor of two, at no additional computational cost. While this is of independent interest as it yields more compact proofs for any circuit, it also decreases our signature sizes. We consider two possibilities for making the proof non-interactive, the Fiat-Shamir transform, and Unruh’s transform (EUROCRYPT’12,’15,’16). The former has smaller signatures, while the latter has a security analysis in the quantum-accessible random oracle model. By customizing Unruh’s transform to our application, the overhead is reduced to 1.6x when compared to the Fiat-Shamir transform, which does not have a rigorous post-quantum security analysis. We implement and benchmark both approaches and explore the possible choice of f, taking advantage of the recent trend to strive for practical symmetric ciphers with a particularly low number of multiplications and end up using LowMC.

How to explain modern security concepts to your children

Xavier Bultel, Jannik Dreier, Pascal Lafourcade, Malika More

At the main cryptography conference, CRYPTO, in 1989, Quisquater and colleagues published a paper showing how to explain the complex notion of zero-knowledge proof in a simpler way that children can understand. In the same line of work, this article presents simple and intuitive explanations of various modern security concepts and technologies, including symmetric encryption, public key encryption, homomorphic encryption, intruder models (CPA, CCA1, CCA2), and security properties (OW, IND, NM). The explanations given in this article may also serve in demystifying such complex security notions for non-expert adults.

A new e-voting scheme based on revised simplified verifiable re-encryption mixnet

Nazmul Islam, Kazi Md. Rokibul Alam, Shinsuke Tamura, Yasuhiko Morimoto

This paper proposes a new electronic voting (e-voting) scheme that exploits confirmation numbers (CNs) and revised simplified verifiable re-encryption mixnet (R-SVRM). R-SVRM is a recently introduced mechanism of mixnet also used to develop an e-voting scheme where a vote is decomposed to protect its voter from being coerced to cast a particular vote. Though the scheme avoids complicated zero knowledge proof (ZKP), the verification procedures of its cryptographic operations are still cumbersome. Again, another e-voting scheme based on CNs comes with benefits of vote verifiability and unlinkability between the vote and its voter, lags behind in adopting public keys for encryption and signature verification. Also its exploited mixnet is not verifiable; therefore requires a pair of signatures on each encrypted vote to ensure the verifiability of mixnet. Hence, the computation and communication overhead of the scheme becomes weighty, though ZKP is avoided. In contrast, the proposed scheme deploys both CNs and R-SVRM to eliminate these limitations. Hence, any coercer cannot force the voter to cast a specific vote as well as cryptographic operations and their verifications become simpler. Also the computation and communication overheads for involved entities get decreased. Finally, the security requirements of e-voting are achieved more elegantly.

Introduction to Blockchain Technology

Gurinder Singh, Vikas Garg, Pooja Tiwari

Abstract This chapter gives an introduction to blockchain technology which was proposed by the pseudonymous Nakamoto (2008) with his well-known Bitcoin paper to enable online payments in a decentralized digital cash system, solving the double-spending problem where someone can make two payments with the same coin. The chapter starts with an informal outline of the application of a blockchain and a brief explanation of how a blockchain network is able to reach consensus about the common state of a transaction history. Furthermore, it introduces the Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithmwhich needs to be donein order to extend the blockchain with new blocks. Since the PoW is a very costly computational algorithm, the transaction data is stored in previous blocks resistant to modification, and thus the PoW safeguards the order of blocks, forming a tamper-proof history of transactions. As a last step, it examines the double-spending attack, which is a fundamental attack to the integrity of a blockchain based system.

We present the first general-purpose digital signature scheme
\nbased on supersingular elliptic curve isogenies secure against quantum
\nadversaries in the quantum random oracle model with small key sizes.
\nThis scheme is an application of Unruh’s construction of non-interactive
\nzero-knowledge proofs to an interactive zero-knowledge proof proposed
\nby De Feo, Jao, and Plut. We implement our proposed scheme on an x86-
\n64 PC platform as well as an ARM-powered device. We exploit the stateof-the-art
\ntechniques to speed up the computations for general C and
\nassembly. Finally, we provide timing results for real world applications.

Bitcoin and Quantum Computing

Louis Tessler, Tim Byrnes

Bitcoin is a digital currency and payment system based on classical cryptographic technologies which works without a central administrator such as in traditional currencies. It has long been questioned what the impact of quantum computing would be on Bitcoin, and cryptocurrencies in general. Here, we analyse three primary directions that quantum computers might have an impact in: mining, security, and forks. We find that in the near-term the impact of quantum computers appear to be rather small for all three directions. The impact of quantum computers would require considerably larger number of qubits and breakthroughs in quantum algorithms to reverse existing hash functions.

The Evolution of Improvised Cryptocurrency – UVCoin

Jasmine Bedi, Utkarsh Wadhwa, Vivek Tomar

Cryptocurrencies which evolved with bitcoin has a decentralized structure based on the ledger which is handled via proof of work mechanism, indeed generating a monetary supply. We all agree that decentralization save us from the cruel national political system but has a limitation of computational cost involved and problem related to scalability. The idea is to introduce a new cryptocurrency named UV Coin which is a cryptocurrency framework having control of the central banks but involves distributed set of authorities to prevent double spending. This coin will maintain enough transparency. The proof of the benefits is partial centralization such as elimination of wasteful hashing and involves a scalable system to avoid double spending attack.

Integrity, authentication and confidentiality in public-key cryptography

Houda Ferradi

This thesis presents new results in three fundamental areas of public-key cryptography: integrity, authentication and confidentiality. In each case we design new primitives or improve the features of existing ones. The first chapter, dealing with integrity, introduces a non-interactive proof for proper RSA public key generation and a contract co-signature protocol in which a breach in fairness provides the victim with transferable evidence against the cheater. The second chapter, focusing on authentication, shows how to use time measurements to shorten zeroknowledge commitments and how to exploit bias in zero-knowledge challenges to gain efficiency. This chapter also generalizes Fiat-Shamir into a one-to-many protocol and describes a very sophisticated smart card fraud illustrating what can happen when authentication protocols are wrongly designed. The third chapter is devoted to confidentiality. We propose public-key cryptosystems where traditional hardness assumptions are replaced by refinements of the CAPTCHA concept and explore the adaptation of honey encryption to natural language messages. Our final contributions focus on identity-based encryption (IBE) showing how to add broadcast features to hierarchical IBE and how to use IBE to reduce vulnerability exposure time of during software patch broadcast.

Verifiable Message-Locked Encryption

Sébastien Canard, Fabien Laguillaumie, Paindavoine

One of today’s main challenge related to cloud storage is to maintain the functionalities and the efficiency of customers’ and service providers’ usual environments while protecting the confidentiality of sensitive data. Deduplication is one of those functionalities: it enables cloud storage providers to save a lot of memory by storing only once a file uploaded several times. However, classical encryption schemes block deduplication. One needs to use a “message-locked encryption” scheme (MLE), which allows the detection of duplicates and the storage of only one encrypted file on the server, which can be decrypted by any owner of the file. However, in most existing scheme, a user can bypass this deduplication protocol. In this article, we provide servers verifiability for MLE schemes: the servers can verify that the ciphertexts are well-formed. This property forces a customer to prove that she complied to the deduplication protocol, thus preventing her to deviate from the prescribed functionality of MLE. Then, we provide an MLE scheme satisfying this new security property. To achieve the deduplication consistency, our construction primarily relies on zero-knowledge proofs. Unlike Abadi et al.’s MLE, we instantiate those proofs, so<br> that we obtain a more efficient scheme, secure in the random oracle model.

PhotoProof: Cryptographic Image Authentication for Any Set of Permissible Transformations

Assa Naveh, Eran Tromer

Since the invention of the camera, photos have been used to document reality and to supply proof of events. Yet today it is easy to fabricate realistic images depicting events that never happened. Thus, dozens of papers strive to develop methods for authenticating images. While some commercial cameras already attach digital signatures to photographs, the images often undergo subsequent transformations (cropping, rotation, compression, and so forth), which do not detract from their authenticity, but do change the image data and thus invalidate the signature. Existing methods address this by signing derived image properties that are invariant to some set of transformations. However, these are limited in the supported transformations, and often offer weak security guarantees. We present PhotoProof, a novel approach to image authentication based on cryptographic proofs. It can be configured, according to application requirements, to allow any permissible set of (efficiently computable) transformations. Starting with a signed image, our scheme attaches, to each legitimately derived image, a succinct proof of computational integrity attesting that the transformation was permissible. Anyone can verify these proofs, and generate updated proofs when applying further permissible transformations. Moreover, the proofs are zero-knowledge so that, for example, an authenticated cropped image reveals nothing about the cropped-out regions. PhotoProof is based on Proof-Carrying Data (PCD), a cryptographic primitive for secure execution of distributed computations. We describe the new construction, prove its security, and demonstrate a working prototype supporting a variety of permissible transformations.

Cryptocurrency

Siddharth Misra, Vishal Kashyap, Poonacha K.B., Arjun Mukund · 5 authors

Cryptocurrencies

Xun Yi, Xuechao Yang, Andrei Kelarev, Kwok‐Yan Lam · 5 authors
