Decision-Making Framework for Implementing Blockchain in Building Operations and Maintenance (O&M)

Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that verifies and records transactions simultaneously across a computer network, offering data dependability, traceability, and immutability. It has gained attention in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry. However, to justify its deployment costs, it is essential to identify where blockchain can generate the most value. This study proposes that the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase of a building’s life cycle, which has a significant environmental, social, and economic impact, can yield a higher return for blockchain. A literature review was conducted to investigate the implementation of blockchain in AECO, revealing a need for more attention to O&M. Inspired by the insights from the review and existing blockchain deployment frameworks, a high-level decision-making framework for blockchain adoption in O&M was developed. The paper also discusses various opportunities, challenges, and future research questions for a successful implementation of blockchain in buildings’ O&M.

Towards a comprehensive understanding of blockchain technology adoption in various industries in developing and emerging economies: a systematic review

The fast growth and wide range of applications of blockchain (BC) technology in various industries is irrefutable. Generally, BC technology is still in at an infant stage but it has generated significant interests in many sectors and industries. Nonetheless, despite an uptake of interest on the application of BC technology, the extent of its adoption in various industries in many countries remains partially understood. This paper aims to assess the current status of research on adoption of BC technology in various industries, particularly in developing and emerging economies. This study systematically reviewed the applied theories and models, adoption factors considered in each study, benefits, barriers and challenges of BC adoption intention in different industries from 86 articles published in the past five years from 2019 to end of June 2023. Findings showed several popular adoption models such as the Technology Acceptance Model, Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and Task Technology Fit in the reviewed articles. Benefits, barriers and challenges were evident from each of the industries, implying the need to further understand BC adoption and application in these industries. This review also identifies a few research gaps and provides recommendations for future researches.

A Review of Blockchain’s Role in E-Commerce Transactions: Open Challenges, and Future Research Directions

The Internet’s expansion has changed how the services accessed and businesses operate. Blockchain is an innovative technology that emerged after the rise of the Internet. In addition, it maintains transactions on encrypted databases that are distributed among many computer networks, much like digital ledgers for online transactions. This technology has the potential to establish a decentralized marketplace for Internet retailers. Sensitive information, like customer data and financial statements, should be routinely transferred via e-commerce. As a result, the system becomes a prime target for cybercriminals seeking illegal access to data. As e-commerce increases, so does the frequency of hacker attacks that raise concerns about the safety of e-commerce platforms’ databases. Owing to the sensitivity of customer data, employee records, and customer records, organizations must ensure their protection. A data breach not only affects an enterprise’s financial performance but also erodes clients’ confidence in the platform. Currently, e-commerce businesses face numerous challenges, including the security of the e-commerce system, transparency and trust in its effectiveness. A solution to these issues is the application of blockchain technology in the e-commerce industry. Blockchain technology simplifies fraud detection and investigation by recording transactions and accompanying data. Blockchain technology enables transaction tracking by creating a detailed record of all the related data, which can assist in identifying and preventing fraud in the future. Using blockchain cryptocurrency will record the sender’s address, recipient’s address, amount transferred, and timestamp, which creates an immutable and transparent ledger of all transaction data.

CBDC's FinTech Innovations

As the global financial landscape continues to transform to technological improvements, the emergence of CBDCs represents a significant turning point in financial systems. The central bank of a country issues and controls CBDCs, which are digital representations of sovereign money. Fintech and CBDCs are closely related because of the building pieces of the CBDC operation, which include blockchain or distributed ledgers, digital currency wallets, and dependable payment gateways. The adoption of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) has the potential to have a significant impact on the fintech industry and could, in some cases, result in a fintech boom. The goal of this study is to develop a comprehensive knowledge of CBDCs' integration with fintech, their wide-ranging effects on society, and the potential need for digital detoxification techniques to balance off the unwanted effects of growing digitalization which can lead to financial innovation and personal well-being in the digital era by looking at CBDCs from both a technology and human-centric standpoint.

Blockchain adoption in supply chains: implications for sustainability

This study aims to systematically review the current academic literature on blockchain and supply chain management (SCM) to explore the antecedents and sustainable outcomes of blockchain adoption and identify factors that influence blockchain adoption at different stages of implementation in supply chains (SC). This review follows the 6 steps and 14 decisions of conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) to comprehensively review 69 papers published in Academic Journal Guide (AJG) 3 and above journals between 2008 and 2023. Based on the content analysis of the selected papers, this study identifies antecedents and outcomes for blockchain adoption. This study further identifies influential factors in each blockchain implementation stage. A conceptual framework is developed to facilitate the conceptual development of blockchain adoption for sustainability in SCs. This study extends the prior studies of blockchain adoption in SCM with the consideration of how blockchain affects the SCM from the aspects of economic, social, and environmental. This review identifies four major themes in the topic of blockchain implementation and SCM, thus assisting researchers in avoiding focusing on the investigation of mature and saturated topics. The research gaps are identified, and future research directions are recommended for scholars, thereby enabling the comprehensive development of blockchain adoption in SCs.

Key success drivers for implementation blockchain technology in UAE Islamic banking

The utilization of blockchain technology is increasingly emerging as a catalyst for significant changes across multiple industries, including the domain of Islamic finance. This study examines the influence of blockchain technology on the factors that contribute to the successful adoption of blockchain in Islamic banks located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The present study employs a cross-sectional survey methodology, encompassing a sample of 344 banking professionals. The investigation utilizes Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as a statistical technique to examine the association between several crucial variables, namely Trust, Financial Transfers, Operating Expenses, Safety and Security, and the effective implementation of blockchain technology. The results indicate that these variables have a major impact on the effectiveness of implementing blockchain technology, confirming its ability to boost the efficiency of transactions, decrease expenses, and enhance security while adhering to Shariah law. This work makes a vital contribution to the scholarly discourse around the deployment of technology in the context of Islamic banking. In particular, it emphasizes blockchain technology's part in fostering innovation within the sector and fostering a culture of compliance with the sector's ethical and operational standards.

Enhancing estate governance using blockchain technology through risk management in estate governance of business sustainability

The integration of blockchain technology into estate governance has the potential to revolutionize transparency, efficiency, and security in estate management. Traditional governance structures often grapple with inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and security issues in estate management. This paper comprehensively explores the impact of blockchain on estate governance, and then risk management and business sustainability. This research centers on the role of risk management on business sustainability to mediate and moderate the effect of estate governance on business sustainability. The results indicate that effective real estate governance positively affects risk management practices in real estate. However, both real estate governance and risk management contribute to business sustainability. Moreover, there are still gaps in the literature that require further investigation. Where policymakers and practitioners can develop informed strategies to strengthen governance structures, mitigate risks, and promote sustainable practices in real estate; Thus, promoting long-term success and resilience in the real estate industry. It is worth noting that future research should focus on empirical testing of the proposed hypotheses to provide a better understanding of these dynamics and their implications for risk management that can affect business sustainability.

Blockchain technology adoption in supply chain management: an investigation from UTAUT and information system success model

This study identifies the critical elements that play a substantial role in adopting blockchain technology (BT) in supply chain management (SCM). The blockchain is a system that provides a new and innovative way of documenting information through the internet, ensuring the data is encrypted and the transaction is secure. The adoption of the blockchain system, like software, can be explained by merging two widely accepted models (i.e., ISSM-information system success model and UTAUT) as the theoretical basis. The required data were obtained through a questionnaire from supply chain practitioners in China (Beijing) to accomplish the study objectives. The empirical findings determine that total quality, social influence, and performance expectancy positively impact user satisfaction. Furthermore, total quality, social influence, facilitating condition, performance expectancy, and user satisfaction positively influence the behavioural intention to use BT in SCM. Finally, user satisfaction and behavioural intention have a substantial positive impact on SCM's performance, with 32% of variance explained. The results of this study are discussed evidently, and accordingly, practical guidelines are offered to policymakers along with the limitation and future work.

In a smart city environment, various intelligent devices, applications, and digital networks collaborate to provide technological solutions for the public good. The exponential data generated from intelligent interactions among stakeholders within the smart city ecosystem raises concerns regarding security and privacy. Maintaining data openness while safeguarding it against social engineering attacks, network breaches, and data masking threats is paramount to achieving resilience. Blockchain technology has demonstrated great promise in addressing these challenges due to its decentralized, consistent, and tamper-proof nature. Our paper explores how blockchain can address the challenges of integrity, security, and privacy in smart city operations. Despite significant research efforts, the subject remains in need of a comprehensive survey. Consequently, we conduct a study on state-of-the-art blockchain-based reputation and trust management methods within the three fundamental components of a smart city: energy, healthcare, and transportation. The trust and reputation mechanisms are analyzed to identify their strengths and limitations. The investigation reveals that the existing trust schemes are resource-constrained and encounter scalability limitations, high energy consumption, and incompatibility with existing systems.

DMLBC: Dependable machine learning for seaports using blockchain technology

The technological shifts driven by Industry 4.0 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has ushered new challenges for seaports, necessitating a transformation in their information and communications systems to enhance global competitiveness. As the United Nations (UN) International Maritime Organization mandates the adoption of a Maritime Single Window in short time, seaports are compelled to adapt their operations. Addressing these challenges, this research introduces the Dependable Machine Learning for seaports using Blockchain (DMLBC) method, offering a secure technological system that integrates transactional data among various logistics stakeholders. DMLBC enhances efficiency in document control, traceability, loading processes, and collaborative workflows. The method employs a architecture grounded in Blockchain (BC) and harnesses Machine Learning Techniques. In a practical application, DMLBC is implemented in a real case study, demonstrating its efficacy for decision making of port operations. The research discusses the contributions that the DMLBC method has compared to what exists in the bibliographic review and in other port industries worldwide. Describes future exploration directions and It emphasizes the potential for generating additional predictions by incorporating others Key Performance Indicators (KPI)s, integrating DMLBC with Decision Support System (DSS), and delving into the realm of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) to fortify the security of seaport operations in the evolving technological landscape.

Analyzing the improvement of estate governance and management in Jordan using blockchain

The potential for transforming the estate management industry through the resolution of common inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and security concerns is presented by the use of blockchain technology into estate governance. The purpose of this article is to clarify how incorporating blockchain technology would affect estate operations and governance. This study is based on quantitative information that was collected from 317 estate management professionals using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. SmartPLS4 analysis demonstrates that blockchain governance has a statistically significant and robust influence on estate governance in Jordan. The impact of Blockchain Governance on Jordanian Estate Management appears to be negligible and unimportant. Furthermore, there appears to be a negligible and insignificant correlation between Jordanian estate management and estate planning methods. In-depth analysis of these theories is done in this article, which also offers insights into how blockchain technology affects estate governance dynamics and how it can affect Jordan's estate management procedures. The consequences go beyond theoretical understandings; they promote the use of blockchain technology in estate governance frameworks as a game-changing means of ensuring the safe, transparent, and effective administration of frozen estates in Jordan and elsewhere.

Since 2008, the blockchain technology has been developed and rapidly gains the attention among the world especially in the Islamic finance decision makers and policymakers. The adoption of blockchain technology in Islamic Fintech is remarkable and confronts numerous challenges and questions on the basis of feasibilities and also an uptick growth rate in Islamic financial assets. Several financial institutions or organizations endeavour to implement the disruptive technologies as reducing risk and time costs through the decentralised and keeping open book ledger system. So this work is entitled as A Study on the impact of blockchain technology on Islamic Finance System; challenges and opportunities. In addition, this paper also exposes emerging literature reviews on blockchain technology in the Islamic financial system and also find out the various positive and negative impacts of Distributed ledger technology in the Islamic finance sectors, so it will literally assist the financial industrialists, academicians and policymakers to understand the processes, application and challenges of blockchain technology in the Islamic finance sectors. It will literally draw a path way towards investors, businessmen and laymen with detailed information.

Thanks to developments in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, cyber security, and other game-changing technologies, the information technology (IT) landscape is changing quickly. With an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), multi-cloud strategies, cybersecurity resilience, quantum computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), DevOps, blockchain, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) activities, this article offers a thorough examination of current IT developments influencing companies in 2024. Business operations are being completely transformed by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), which improve automation and personalization while bringing up moral questions of justice and transparency. Organizations are using AI-driven threat detection and zero-trust architecture more frequently as cyber threats increase in order to strengthen cybersecurity resilience. As cloud computing advances toward multi-cloud and hybrid models, businesses can benefit from increased scalability, flexibility, and reduced vendor lock-in. Though they are still in the experimental stage, emerging technologies like quantum computing offer promising improvements in computational capacity and the ability to solve complicated problems.
