Interaction mechanism between blockchain and IPFS

Feng Yang, Zongya Ding, Yankuan Yu, Yi Sun

Blockchains can provide integrity and authenticity, but their limited storage capacity can be a challenge when it comes to storing large amounts of data. To address this issue, off-chain storage solutions such as the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) can be utilized. This has led to the emergence of various applications that utilize both blockchain and IPFS. After reviewing a large body of literature utilizing blockchain and IPFS, we found that the coordinated interaction between blockchain and IPFS can help solve many problems and provide many research opportunities. Therefore, this survey paper aims to introduce the interaction mechanism between blockchain and IPFS. We first provide a general overview and comparison of different P2P data networks to help understand why IPFS is suitable as the storage layer for blockchains. Subsequently, we use select applications that leverage blockchain and IPFS to show how the mechanism works and explore new developments in this area. Specifically, we identify research areas and provide a qualitative comparison of these different applications. From the comparison, we derive research goals related to the interaction mechanism between blockchain and IPFS.

Liquidity Management Attacks on Lending Markets

Arjmand, Alireza, Khabbazian, Majid

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) continues to open up promising opportunities for a broad spectrum of users, with lending pools emerging as a cornerstone of its applications. While prominent platforms like Compound and Aave maintain a large share of the funds in lending pools, numerous other smaller pools also exist. Many of these smaller entities draw heavily from the design principles of their larger counterparts due to the complex nature of lending pool design. This paper asserts that the design approaches that serve larger pools effectively may not necessarily be the most beneficial for smaller lending pools. We identify and elaborate on two liquidity management attacks, which can allow well-funded attackers to exploit specific circumstances within lending pools for personal gain. Although large lending pools, due to their vast and diverse liquidity and high user engagement, are generally less vulnerable to these attacks, smaller lending protocols may need to employ specialized defensive strategies, particularly during periods of low liquidity. We also show that beyond the six leading lending protocols, there exists a market value exceeding $1.75 billion. This considerable sum is dispersed among over 200 liquidity pools, posing a potentially attractive target for bad actors. Furthermore, we evaluate existing designs of lending pools and suggest a novel architecture that distinctly separates the liquidity and logic layers. This unique setup gives smaller pools the adaptability they need to link with larger, well-established pools. Despite encountering certain constraints, these emerging pools can leverage the considerable liquidity from larger pools until they generate sufficient funds to form their own standalone liquidity pools. This design cultivates a setting where multiple lending pools can integrate their liquidity components, thus encouraging a more diverse and robust liquidity environment.

Building Better with Blocks – A Novel Secure Multi-Channel Internet Memory Information Control (S-MIMIC) Protocol for Complex Latency Sensitive Applications

Blake Douglas Bryant

Multimedia networking is the area of study associated with the delivery of heterogeneous data including, but not limited to, imagery, video, audio, and interactive content. Multimedia and communication network researchers have continually struggled to devise solutions for addressing the three core challenges in multimedia delivery: security, reliability, and performance. Solutions to these challenges typically exist in a spectrum of compromises achieving gains in one aspect at the cost of one or more of the others. Networked videogames represent the pinnacle of multimedia presented in a real-time interactive format. Continual improvements to multimedia delivery have led to tools such as buffering, redundant coupling of low-resolution alternative data streams, congestion avoidance, and forced in-order delivery of best-effort service; however, videogames cannot afford to pay the latency tax of these solutions in their current state. The Secure Multi-Channel Internet Memory Information Control (S-MIMIC) protocol was developed as a novel solution to address these challenges by leveraging recent developments in blockchain and distributed ledger technology. Multiple algorithms were developed within the S-MIMIC protocol to perform create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) interactions via distributed ledger and blockchain technologies. Performance of the the S-MIMIC protocol was evaluated by porting its capabilities into an open source First-Person Shooter (FPS) videogame developed within the Unity3D game engine. SMIMIC efficacy was evaluated across the dimensions of confidentiality, integrity, availability and read/write performance. Though performance evaluation of the S-MIMIC focused on implementation within videogames, this protocol may be used to augment data delivery in multiple industries to include: medical information, legal documents, financial transactions, and many other applications that require security, reliability and performance guarantees.

Web3

Bin Cao, Zheng Yan, Xu Xia

Different from “read” based Web1 and “read-write” based Web2, “read-write-own” based Web3 is proposed as a typical user-centric internet to open the new generation of World Wide Web, which is expected to not allow the power to rest with a few big internet companies. Generally, Web3 is decentralized and semantic depending on user behavior, and thus the zero-trust architecture should be created initially. To hasten its arrival, a comprehensive discussion on its architecture and enabling technologies is inspired. Specifically, to access Web3, it is essential to study how to establish an identity management system. Meanwhile, for resource description and data verification, it is necessary to set up decentralized identifiers (DID), and link the data to identifiers in the form of DID document. In particular, a decentralized network operating system is an indispensable underlying technology for Web3, incorporating concepts such as decentralization and user-driven philosophy. Therefore, the corresponding technologies for the operating system such as blockchain and distributed ledger technology should be further studied and developed. Moreover, in order to reduce the consensus cost, a large-scale incentive mechanism is also the basis of long-term sustainability, which can attract and motivate distributed players to participate in the maintenance of Web3. Last but not the least, Web3 is built on a physical infrastructure relying on communication, networking, storage and computing, which is crucial to establishing an effective and secure Web3. This encourages us to study communication, networking, storage and computing in Web3, as well as the specific requirements of running Web3.

OSCMS: A Decentralized Open-Source Coordination Management System Using a Novel Triple-Blockchain Architecture

Jiakai Chen, Yishi Zhao, Xiao Chen, Ying Shi

Open-source systems help to manage the rapid development of software, while governing open-source systems properly can effectively promote software and software engineering. However, some significant problems, such as code controls, incentives, interaction and cooperation, automation, transparency and fairness of rights and responsibilities, cannot be properly solved by traditional methodologies. The decentralization, immutability, change in trust mode and smart contract programming of blockchain provide new solutions. In order to solve the problems of traditional centralized open-source governance, this paper proposes a decentralized open-source coordination management system using a novel triple-blockchain architecture. Through the analysis of traditional and blockchain-based research, the business and technical issues that need to be addressed in decentralized open-source governance systems have been emphatically studied. Combined with triple-blockchain architecture, smart contracts, oracles and continuous integration tools, we study the decentralization of open-source businesses and make them more trustworthy, automated and coordinated. An identity authentication mechanism is designed for permission control and inter-community collaboration. A decentralized open-source reputation is proposed for incentive and reference. We also improved the DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake) consensus under triple-blockchain architecture to reduce repeated elections. By constructing the OSCMS prototype based on the proposed architecture model, many comparative experiments were conducted under different parameters and conditions and showed good feasibility, scalability, reliability and performance. The OSCMS not only solves the shortcomings of previous research but also provides a comprehensive and feasible reference for the decentralized practice of open-source governance.

When is a Cryptocurrency Transfer International in Distributed Ledger Technology-Based Systems?

Burcu Yüksel Ripley

Cryptocurrencies, introduced in 2009 with the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, have grown significantly in recent years and attracted attention globally. One of the main characteristics of cryptocurrencies and their key innovation is that they are underpinned by distributed ledger technology (DLT) or blockchain as a type of DLT. This technology enables cryptocurrencies to be transferred, stored or traded electronically within DLT-based systems in a peer-to-peer manner among (pseudonymous) system participants across the world without the involvement of the usual central trusted authorities or intermediaries such as banks. This raises the question of if, and how, one should ascertain internationality for cryptocurrency transfers taking place within truly global systems underpinned by DLT for private international law purposes. This article aims to raise awareness of and address the question of internationality in the context of cryptocurrency transfers in DLT-based systems. It considers internationality in private international law, potential factors that might be relevant in ascertaining internationality for cryptocurrency transfers through a comparison to that for electronic funds transfers (EFTs), and the approaches of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) and the Hague Conference for Private International Law (HCCH) on internationality in their current projects concerning digital assets and digital economy respectively.

Reference Architecture for Blockchain-Native Distributed Information System

Itzhak Aviv, Artem Barger, Alexander Kofman, Roye Weisfeld

The blockchain paradigm and its application of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) are now enabling technologies for the worldwide development of trustworthy and decentralized solutions. DLT offers enormous potential to accommodate the intricate architectural patterns of individual Distributed Information Systems (DIS). Despite its immense potential, the current research effort is not focused on deploying DLT inside the DIS area. We identified sixteen essential DIS Architectural Properties (APs) that offer issues for DIS system architects using Grounded Theory. Then, we assessed the capabilities of the major DLT platform and highlighted its prospects and limits with regard to supporting DIS APs. Using the meta-analysis research technique, we demonstrated that DLT might serve as a development platform for a blockchain-native DIS (BN-DIS) that enables design and development processes. A BN-DIS utilizes DLT infrastructure and blockchain design principles to expand internationally, support thousands of distributed nodes, and employ DIS APs unique to the Blockchain. Lastly, we give a case study illustrating how DLT handles DIS APs in a real-world context, giving empirical proof of the DLT’s efficacy in servicing DIS APs.

SoK: Privacy-Enhancing Technologies in Finance

Carsten Baum, Chiang, James Hsin-yu, Bernardo David, Tore Kasper Frederiksen

Recent years have seen the emergence of practical advanced cryptographic tools that not only protect data privacy and authenticity, but also allow for jointly processing data from different institutions without sacrificing privacy. The ability to do so has enabled implementations of a number of traditional and decentralized financial applications that would have required sacrificing privacy or trusting a third party. The main catalyst of this revolution was the advent of decentralized cryptocurrencies that use public ledgers to register financial transactions, which must be verifiable by any third party, while keeping sensitive data private. Zero Knowledge (ZK) proofs rose to prominence as a solution to this challenge, allowing for the owner of sensitive data (e.g. the identities of users involved in an operation) to convince a third party verifier that a certain operation has been correctly executed without revealing said data. It quickly became clear that performing arbitrary computation on private data from multiple sources by means of secure Multiparty Computation (MPC) and related techniques allows for more powerful financial applications, also in traditional finance.
\nIn this SoK, we categorize the main traditional and decentralized financial applications that can benefit from state-of-the-art Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) and identify design patterns commonly used when applying PETs in the context of these applications. In particular, we consider the following classes of applications: 1. Identity Management, KYC & AML; 2. Markets & Settlement; 3. Legal; and 4. Digital Asset Custody. We examine how ZK proofs, MPC and related PETs have been used to tackle the main security challenges in each of these applications. Moreover, we provide an assessment of the technological readiness of each PET in the context of different financial applications according to the availability of: theoretical feasibility results, preliminary benchmarks (in scientific papers) or benchmarks achieving real-world performance (in commercially deployed solutions). Finally, we propose future applications of PETs as Fintech solutions to currently unsolved issues. While we systematize financial applications of PETs at large, we focus mainly on those applications that require privacy preserving computation on data from multiple parties.

Touching Space: Distributed Ledger Technology for Tracking and Tracing Certificates

Pascal Moriggl, Petra Asprion, Bettina Schneider, Christopher Scherb

Components built into space vehicles and equipment (space products) must meet different regulatory requirements; in detail, each component must be certified and sustainably traceable at all times. Space engineers have expressed the need for an interoperable system to collect, manage and route certifications for components, parts and materials that go into space products. The lack of a unified approach in the European space industry is a challenge for companies involved in product development. This research proposes an open-source, secure, fast and distributed ledger technology (DLT) based solution that fits into any IT environment and is well adapted to the needs of manufacturing companies in the space sector. The results show that a blockchain-based solution based on 'Hyperledger Fabric' combined with the InterPlanetary File System is viable. The results can guide other researchers and practitioners to consider DLTs when changing their certification management paradigm with suppliers, customers and auditors.
