Optimization of Zakat Management Based on Ethereum Blockchain and Its Impact on Cost Efficiency

Ilham Ardhiyansyah, Ahmad Furqon, Mashilal Mashilal

Zakat is a fundamental component of Islamic social finance, intended to reduce inequality and strengthen community welfare. However, traditional zakat systems face recurring issues, including inefficiency, lack of transparency, and low public trust. This study aims to optimize zakat management using Ethereum blockchain technology, particularly the Layer 2 (Base) network, with a focus on its impact on cost efficiency and system transparency. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research designs and simulates a blockchain-based zakat distribution model that incorporates smart contracts for automated fund allocation to eight categories of ashnaf, along with off-chain verification for Sharia compliance. A simulation of USDC 1,000 zakat fund distribution demonstrates that the blockchain system ensures accurate, traceable, and tamper-proof transactions, while reducing transaction costs by over 98% compared to conventional methods. Smart contracts automate the disbursement process, while all transaction records are stored on a public ledger, which supports real-time auditing and enhances institutional accountability. These results demonstrate that the integration of blockchain technology not only improves operational efficiency and transparency but also supports Islamic legal and ethical governance. In conclusion, this model provides a practical and scalable framework for modernizing zakat management with a strong emphasis on cost efficiency, public trust, and Sharia compliance.

Bridging Legal Pluralism Through Community-Based Islamic Education: Enhancing Sharia Literacy on Cryptocurrency and NFTs in Indonesia

Muhammad Farid Romadhoni Alqodr, A. Fajar Awaluddin, Annas Fajar Rohmani, Muhammad Salman Al Farisi

The rapid development of digital finance has led to widespread adoption of cryptocurrency and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), including among Indonesian Muslims. However, a gap remains between state policy and Islamic legal perspectives on the legitimacy of these digital assets. While the Indonesian government recognizes cryptocurrency as a tradable commodity, Islamic authorities such as the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) consider it haram due to elements of gharar (uncertainty) and maysir (gambling). This normative divergence, coupled with the absence of integrated sharia-based digital education, creates confusion and increases the risk of speculative or unethical practices. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach through library research, drawing on academic literature, state regulations, fatwas, and digital media content. The findings reveal that community-based Islamic education—rooted in platforms such as pesantren, majelis taklim, and digital Muslim communities—plays a strategic role in enhancing sharia literacy. Digital educational media like YouTube, podcasts, and e-learning serve as powerful tools for contextualizing Islamic teachings in the digital economy. Collaborative educational initiatives involving scholars, educators, and influencers have shown positive outcomes in building awareness and ethical understanding of digital financial instruments. This research suggests that integrating fintech content into Islamic educational curricula and empowering da'i and PAI teachers with digital literacy skills are essential to developing an ethically grounded and technologically literate Muslim society.

Public Resistance to Cryptocurrency and Its View From the Islamic Perspective

Farid Fathony Ashal

Cryptocurrency appeared amid digital technology's growth tremendously, offering fast, transparent, auditable, and secure features. However, its presence and status in Islamic law are still debatable among the Community. Cryptocurrency is based on blockchain and has decentralized finance, contrary to the current conventional system, namely central banks. The purpose of this study is to see community resistance over cryptocurrencies and its views on the Islamic perspective. This study is qualitative with a phenomenology approach. Data sources were obtained through in-depth interviews and structured ones. The analysis carried out in this study used the maqashid sharia approach, fiqh rules, and ushul fiqh. The result of this study showed that the concept of decentralized finance has yet to be able to take over the role of central banks. The majority of perspectives provided by the ulama, who were consulted as primary sources in this research, maintain the belief that cryptocurrency remains an unreliable medium of exchange and a risky long-term asset.

Dinamika Transaksi Cryptocurrency: Antara Haram Dan Halal

Nova Yanti Maleha, Waldi Nopriansyah, Bagus Setiawan

Crypto is a digital currency that is contained in a network that does not have a concrete object. However, this cryptocurrency has several types, the more common being bictoin. The problem with Bictoin is that it is a network of consensus systems into a new form of payment transaction using blockchain in this Cryptocurrency transaction. It doesn't have physical objects, it's only digital goods. Therefore, this article discusses the dynamics of Cryptocurrency transactions. This type of research is qualitative in the form of literature research with a normative approach. The author concludes that Cryptocurrency transactions are developing in Indonesia, but transactions still contain elements of ambiguity (gharar), speculation (masyir) so that this is the basis for the Islamic prohibition of Cryptocurrency transactions in Indonesia. However, if it is managed according to Islamic rules, Cryptocurrency transactions can be legalized in transactions.

Blockchain zakat: An integrated financial inclusion strategy to manage Indonesia’s potential zakat funds

Afifah Nur Millatina, Risanda Alirastra Budiantoro, Rahmad Hakim, Febrianur Ibnu Fitroh Sukono Putra

The research aims to analyze the potential of using blockchain to promote integrated financial inclusion through Indonesian potential zakat funds. We use a qualitative approach (the business model canvas) as the analysis tool. We generate the data using the literature study. The essence of the zakat funds management implies that zakat assets should not be left idle. Further, greater zakat funds collected, managed, and distributed will deliver more benefits to mauquf alayh, greater divine rewards to the wakif, and greater funds received by nazir. Our results indicate that the zakat blockchain programs offer various benefits because blockchain facilitates more decentralized and borderless transactions. The benefits include achieving targets more effectively; avoiding overlap; developing zakat more systematically; monitoring more effectively in planning, organizing, actuating, and evaluating nazhir zakat; and contributing to short, medium, and long-term national socioeconomic objectives. In sum, we conclude that more decentralized and borderless blockchain-facilitated transactions potentially enhance Indonesian zakat funds' potential collection and utilization.

Halal Haram Cryptocurrency

Idrus Idrus

The invention of the computer which was originally a calculating machine (Difference Engine no. 1) which was discovered by Charles Babbage (1791- 1871) is something very famous in the history of computer development and is the first automatic calculator. With the very rapid development of the digital world, in 1983 an American cryptography expert David Chaum used cryptographic electronic money called e-cash, and in 1995, he implemented it through Digichash, which became the initial form of collaboration between the digital world of computers and Money, which is a cryptographic electronic payment instrument that requires user software to pull notes from the bank and designate a specific encrypted key before it can be sent to the recipient. And in 1996, the NSA, namely the United States National Security Agency, which was founded by President Harry S. Truman on November 4, 1952, had the task and function of collecting and analyzing communications from other countries, as well as protecting information belonging to the United States. The agency published a paper entitled How to Make a Mint: The Cryptography of Anonymous Electronic Cash, describing the Crypto currency system that first published it on the MIT mailing list, later in 1997, in the journal The American Law Review (Vol. 46, Issue 4). It was these researches that eventually led the developers to start developing what is known today as blockchain which is basically a distributed open ledger to record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way. The discovery of Bit coin in 2009 which was declared as electronic money was developed by an institution or individual who has the initials Satoshi Nakamoto, the technology used is using a peer to peer network without centralized storage so that verification can be done anywhere in the world anywhere that dedicates a computer, to do this or it is called mining. Since 2009 other coins and tokens have started to appear, as we can see on CoinMarketcap which has more than 6000 coins and tokens. The utilization and use of this technology is still being debated from the point of view of Muslims in Indonesia, as stated by Yenny Wahid in the activities carried out by the Islamic Law Firm (ILF), this is due to the uncertainty of the asset value which can change at any time.
