The correlation strength of the most important cryptocurrencies in the bull and bear market

The article explores the correlation strength of the ten most important cryptocurrencies, emphasizing the examination of differences during the periods of rising and falling prices. The daily and weekly returns of selected cryptocurrencies are taken as the basis for calculating and determining the correlation strength using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The survey covers the period from the beginning of 2017 to Bitcoin’s last local bottom in mid-March 2020. Research findings are as follows: 1) the most important cryptocurrencies are mostly moderately positively correlated with each other over time; 2) correlation strength decreases slightly during the bull period, but mostly remain in the range of moderate correlation; 3) correlation strength increases significantly during the bear period, with most cryptocurrencies strongly correlated with each other. The results do not change significantly if the daily or weekly cryptocurrency returns are used as the basis. A strong correlation in the period of falling prices prevents the effective diversification of the cryptocurrency portfolio, which must be considered when investing funds in the cryptocurrency market.

Pandemic-related financial market volatility spillovers: Evidence from the Chinese COVID-19 epicentre

Utilising Chinese-developed data based on long-standing influenza indices, and the more recently-developed coronavirus and face mask indices, we set out to test for the presence of volatility spillovers from Chinese financial markets upon a broad number of traditional financial assets during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such indices are used to specifically measure the performance of Chinese companies who are inherently involved in the R&D and production of materials and products used to mitigate and counteract the effects of influenza and coronavirus, therefore, such indices present a unique barometer of broad population-based sentiment relating to COVID-19 in comparison to traditional Chinese influenza. Within days of the formal announcement of the COVID-19 outbreak, results indicate exceptionally pronounced and persistent impacts of the coronavirus pandemic upon Chinese financial markets, compared to that of the traditional and long-standing influenza index. Further, in a novel finding to date, COVID-19 is found to have had a substantial effect on directional spillovers upon the Bitcoin market. Cryptocurrency-based confidence appears to have been instigated through government-developed education schemes, which are identified as one possible explanation for our results, which are found to remain robust across both data-frequency and methodological variation.

Measuring Volatility Spillovers among cryptocurrencies: A Generalized VAR approach

This paper investigates volatility spillovers among six competitor Cryptocurrencies from August 8, 2015 to September 01, 2019. A Generalized VAR framework is used to measure time varying spillovers index. Results provide evidence of (i) a rise in volatility spillovers transmitted among monitored Cryptocurrencies since the second quarter of 2017. (ii) Ethereum acts as the major contributor on spillovers index, contrary to Ripple that presents the main recipient of spillovers. (iii) the pairwise (Monero-Ripple) and (Bitcoin-Ethereum) present a low connectedness level driving consequently beneficial diversification opportunities for cryptocurrency investors.

GARCH Modelling of High-Capitalization Cryptocurrencies’ Impacts During Bearish Markets

Abstract This study investigates how twelve cryptocurrencies with large capitalization get influenced by the three cryptocurrencies with the largest market capitalization (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple). Twenty alternative specifications of ARCH, GARCH as well as DCC-GARCH are employed. Daily data covers the period from 1 January 1 2018 to 16 September 2018, representing the intense bearish cryptocurrency market. Empirical outcomes reveal that volatility among digital currencies is not best described by the same specification but varies according to the currency. It is evident that most cryptocurrencies have a positive relationship with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple, therefore, there is no great possibility of hedging for crypto-currency portfolio managers and investors in distressed times.

Volatility Modelling and VaR: The Case of Bitcoin, Ether and Ripple

Abstract Since Bitcoin introduction in 2008, the cryptocurrency market has grown into hundreds-of-billion-dollar market. The cryptocurrency market is well known as very volatile, mainly for the fact that the cryptocurrencies have not the price to fall back upon and that anybody can join the trading (no license or approval is required). Since empirical literature suggests that GARCH-type models dominate as VaR estimators the overall objective of this paper is to perform comprehensive volatility and VaR estimation for three major digital assets and conclude which method gives the best results in terms of risk management. The methods we used are parametric (GARCH and EWMA model), non-parametric (historical VaR) and Monte Carlo simulation (given by Geometric Brownian Motion). We conclude that the best method for value-at-risk estimation for cryptocurrencies is the Monte Carlo simulation due to the heavy diffusion (stochastic) process and robustness of the results.

Bitcoins as a determinant of stock market movements: A comparison of Indian and Chinese Stock Markets

The present paper aims to examine the relationship between price movement of cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) and stock exchange movements of two major global economies i.e. India and China. 1133 number of observations on daily basis were taken from 1st January 2015 to 29th November 2019 and analysed using statistical software E-views. Statistical techniques like Granger Causality, Johnsen Co-integration and VECM have been employed to achieve the objective of the paper. The empirical results of the paper depict that long run relationship exists between Bitcoin and stock exchanges of India and China. Sensex has the unidirectional causality with Bitcoin. The significant t-statistics imply an influential role of Sensex in Bitcoin price movement. The results further indicate that there is no evidence of any causal relationship between Bitcoin and Chinese Stock exchange, which suggests a better risk-return mechanism for the global investors and policy makers. The findings of the paper can be imparted as guidelines for the global investors for diversifying their portfolios.

Causality and dynamic spillovers among cryptocurrencies and currency markets

Abstract This paper utilizes two methods to uncover the causality dynamic between the three leading cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple, and nine major foreign currency markets. Firstly, we implement the technique of Diebold–Yilmaz to compute the spillover index between cryptocurrencies and currency markets. We find a significant return spillover effect between Bitcoin and Litecoin in the first three quarters of 2017. Still, the return spillover is merely meaningful in the first three quarters of 2015 for Ripple. However, the total volatility spillover index in the system decreases in the fourth quarter of 2017. Secondly, we apply the Bayesian graphical structural vector, autoregressive estimations, and find that the current level of Bitcoin depends only on the previous level of the Chinese Yuan. The current level of Ripple strongly depends on the prior levels of Bitcoin, followed by Litecoin. The current level of Litecoin strongly depends on the previous level of Ripple, followed by the Chinese Yuan. These results indicate that there is a significant causal relationship among cryptocurrencies. However, except for the Chinese Yuan, major traditional currencies do not significantly affect cryptocurrencies.

Investors Attitude towards Cryptocurrency- based on Gender

The purpose of this study was to analyse and understand the attitude of gender towards cryptocurrency. The questionnaire was formed to collect data about knowledge, experience, trust, and other investment factors of the gender towards cryptocurrency. This paper will be beneficial to the upcoming or existing companies of cryptocurrency to estimate their future viability based on gender. The research was also aimed  to the detection of gender differences within the areas of awareness, investing, mining and paying with the cryptocurrencies.  The research aimed to analyse the data collected and conclude the overall attitude of male/ female towards cryptocurrency. The findings confirmed the existence of gender differences in attitude towards crypto currencies, as the male respondents were more willing to use the crypto currencies in most of the cases.

Impact of macroeconomic news, regulation and hacking exchange markets on the volatility of bitcoin

We study whether news and sentiment about bitcoin regulation, the hacking of bitcoin exchanges and scheduled macroeconomic news announcements affect the volatility of bitcoin, measured as realized variance and its jump component. Our results show that realized variance and its jump component exhibit similar dynamics and react similarly to various types of news. Volatility of bitcoin reacts most strongly to news on bitcoin regulation, positive investor sentiment regarding bitcoin regulation extracted using Google searches, and most notably, hacking attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges. Quantile regression reveals that hacking attacks have particularly strong impact on the upper conditional distribution of bitcoin volatility. We also find that the volatility of bitcoin is not influenced by most scheduled US macroeconomic news announcements, such as government budget deficits, inflation, or even monetary policy announcements. On the other hand, bitcoin responds with increased volatility to announcements of forward-looking indicators, such as the consumer confidence index.

Cryptocurrencies value‐at‐risk and expected shortfall: Do regime‐switching volatility models improve forecasting?

Abstract This paper evaluates the presence of regime changes in the log‐returns volatility dynamics of cryptocurrencies using Markov‐Switching GARCH (MS‐GARCH) models. The empirical study compares the prediction performance of MS‐GARCH against traditional single‐regime GARCH methods for one‐, five‐ and ten‐steps‐ahead volatility forecasting of six leading digital coins such as Bitcoin, Dashcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero and Ripple. Using a Bayesian approach, different MS‐GARCH structures are estimated considering specifications up to three regimes, three scedastic functions and six error distributions, resulting in a total of 54 models for each cryptocurrency. Forecasts are compared according to an economic criterion, that is, through the estimation of Value‐at‐Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES) risk measures. The results support the evidence of regime changes in the volatility process of selected cryptocurrencies and show that MS‐GARCH models do provide more accurate VaR and ES forecasts than their single‐regime counterparts.

True versus Spurious Long Memory in Cryptocurrencies

We test whether the selected cryptocurrencies exhibit long memory behavior in returns and volatility. We use data on five most traded cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and XRP. Using recent tests of long memory developed against persistent and nonlinear alternatives, this paper finds that long memory is mostly rejected in returns. The tests fail to reject the null hypothesis of long memory in most cases across different volatility proxies and cryptocurrencies. The estimated memory parameters show that volatility is persistent, and when volatility is measured by log range, it is borderline nonstationary.

Bitcoin Network Mechanics: Forecasting the BTC Closing Price Using Vector Auto-Regression Models Based on Endogenous and Exogenous Feature Variables

The Bitcoin (BTC) market presents itself as a new unique medium currency, and it is often hailed as the “currency of the future”. Simulating the BTC market in the price discovery process presents a unique set of market mechanics. The supply of BTC is determined by the number of miners and available BTC and by scripting algorithms for blockchain hashing, while both speculators and investors determine demand. One major question then is to understand how BTC is valued and how different factors influence it. In this paper, the BTC market mechanics are broken down using vector autoregression (VAR) and Bayesian vector autoregression (BVAR) prediction models. The models proved to be very useful in simulating past BTC prices using a feature set of exogenous variables. The VAR model allows the analysis of individual factors of influence. This analysis contributes to an in-depth understanding of what drives BTC, and it can be useful to numerous stakeholders. This paper’s primary motivation is to capitalize on market movement and identify the significant price drivers, including stakeholders impacted, effects of time, as well as supply, demand, and other characteristics. The two VAR and BVAR models are compared with some state-of-the-art forecasting models over two time periods. Experimental results show that the vector-autoregression-based models achieved better performance compared to the traditional autoregression models and the Bayesian regression models.

A Cryptocurrency Spectrum Short Analysis

Technological development brings about economic changes that affect most citizens, both in developed and undeveloped countries. The implementation of blockchain technologies that bring cryptocurrencies into the economy and everyday life also induce risks. Authorities are continuously concerned about ensuring balance, which is, among other things, a prudent attitude. Achieving this goal sometimes requires the development of standards and regulations applicable at the national or global level. This paper attempts to dive deeper into the worldwide operations, related to cryptocurrencies, as part of a general phenomenon, and also expose some of the intersections with cybercrime. Without impeding creativity, implementing suggested proposals must comply with the rules in effect and provide sufficient flexibility for adapting and integrating them. Different segments need to align or reposition, as alteration is only allowed in a positive way. Adopting cryptocurrency decisions should be unitary, based on standard policies.

Fed and ECB: which is informative in determining the DCC between bitcoin and energy commodities?

Purpose This paper provides an important perspective to the predictive capacity of Fed and European Central Bank (ECB) meeting dates and production announcements for the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) between Bitcoin and energy commodities returns and volatilities during the period from August 11, 2015 to March 31, 2018. Design/methodology/approach To assess empirically the unanticipated component of the US and ECB monetary policy, the authors pursue the Kuttner's approach and use the federal funds futures and the ECB funds futures to assess the surprise component. The authors use the approach of DCC as introduced by Engle (2002) during the period from August 11, 2015 to March 31, 2018. Findings The authors’ results suggest strong significant DCCs between Bitcoin and energy commodity markets if monetary policy surprises are incorporated in variance. These results confirmed the financialization of Bitcoin and commodity energy markets. Finally, the DCC between Bitcoin and energy commodity markets appears to respond considerably more in the case of Fed surprises than ECB surprises. Originality/value This study is a crucial topic for policymakers and portfolio risk managers.

Bitcoin and other prominent cryptocurrencies have gained much attention since the last several years. Globally known as digital coin and virtual currency, this cryptocurrency is gained and traded within the blockchain system. The blockchain technology adopted in using the cryptocurrency has raised the eyebrows within the banking sector, government, stakeholders and individual investors. The rise of the cryptocurrency within this decade since the inception of Bitcoin in 2009 has taken the market by storm. Cryptocurrency is anticipated as the future currency that might replace the current paper currency worldwide. Even though the interest has caught the attention of users, many are not aware of its opportunities, drawbacks and challenges for the future. Researches on cryptocurrencies are still lacking and still at its infancy stage. In providing substantial guide and view to the academic field and users, this paper will discuss the opportunities in the cryptocurrency such as the security of its technology, low transaction cost and high investment return. The originality of this paper is on the discussion within law and regulation, high energy consumption, possibility of crash and bubble, and attacks on network. The future undertakings of cryptocurrency and its application will be systematically reviewed in this paper.

Randomness, Informational Entropy, and Volatility Interdependencies among the Major World Markets: The Role of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The main purpose of our paper is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on randomness in volatility series of world major markets and to examine its effect on their interconnections. The data set includes equity (Bitcoin and Standard and Poor’s 500), precious metals (Gold and Silver), and energy markets (West Texas Instruments, Brent, and Gas). The generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model is applied to the return series. The wavelet packet Shannon entropy is calculated from the estimated volatility series to assess randomness. Hierarchical clustering is employed to examine interconnections between volatilities. We found that (i) randomness in volatility of the S&P500 and in the volatility of precious metals were the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, while (ii) randomness in energy markets was less affected by the pandemic than equity and precious metal markets. Additionally, (iii) we showed an apparent emergence of three volatility clusters: precious metals (Gold and Silver), energy (Brent and Gas), and Bitcoin and WTI, and (iv) the S&P500 volatility represents a unique cluster, while (v) the S&P500 market volatility was not connected to the volatility of Bitcoin, energy, and precious metal markets before the pandemic. Moreover, (vi) the S&P500 market volatility became connected to volatility in energy markets and volatility in Bitcoin during the pandemic, and (vii) the volatility in precious metals is less connected to volatility in energy markets and to volatility in Bitcoin market during the pandemic. It is concluded that (i) investors may diversify their portfolios across single constituents of clusters, (ii) investing in energy markets during the pandemic period is appealing because of lower randomness in their respective volatilities, and that (iii) constructing a diversified portfolio would not be challenging as clustering structures are fairly stable across periods.

Forecasting Bitcoin Trends Using Algorithmic Learning Systems

This research has examined the ability of two forecasting methods to forecast Bitcoin's price trends. The research is based on Bitcoin-USA dollar prices from the beginning of 2012 until the end of March 2020. Such a long period of time that includes volatile periods with strong up and downtrends introduces challenges to any forecasting system. We use particle swarm optimization to find the best forecasting combinations of setups. Results show that Bitcoin's price changes do not follow the "Random Walk" efficient market hypothesis and that both Darvas Box and Linear Regression techniques can help traders to predict the bitcoin's price trends. We also find that both methodologies work better predicting an uptrend than a downtrend. The best setup for the Darvas Box strategy is six days of formation. A Darvas box uptrend signal was found efficient predicting four sequential daily returns while a downtrend signal faded after two days on average. The best setup for the Linear Regression model is 42 days with 1 standard deviation.

Deep Learning Methods for Modeling Bitcoin Price

A precise prediction of Bitcoin price is an important aspect of digital financial markets because it improves the valuation of an asset belonging to a decentralized control market. Numerous studies have studied the accuracy of models from a set of factors. Hence, previous literature shows how models for the prediction of Bitcoin suffer from poor performance capacity and, therefore, more progress is needed on predictive models, and they do not select the most significant variables. This paper presents a comparison of deep learning methodologies for forecasting Bitcoin price and, therefore, a new prediction model with the ability to estimate accurately. A sample of 29 initial factors was used, which has made possible the application of explanatory factors of different aspects related to the formation of the price of Bitcoin. To the sample under study, different methods have been applied to achieve a robust model, namely, deep recurrent convolutional neural networks, which have shown the importance of transaction costs and difficulty in Bitcoin price, among others. Our results have a great potential impact on the adequacy of asset pricing against the uncertainties derived from digital currencies, providing tools that help to achieve stability in cryptocurrency markets. Our models offer high and stable success results for a future prediction horizon, something useful for asset valuation of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

An Application of Autoregressive Extreme Value Theory to Cryptocurrencies

We study the tails’ behavior of four major Cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and Ripple) by employing the Autoregressive Fr´echet model for conditional maxima. Using five-minute-high-frequency data, we report time-evolving tails as well as provide a straightforward measure of tails asymmetry for positive and negative intra-day returns. We find that only Bitcoin has a notable more massive tail for positive returns asymmetry while the remaining three Cryptocurrencies have a general tendency towards more massive negative intra-day tails. All considered Cryptocurrencies depict lighter tails as the market matures.
