Securing e-voting based on blockchain in P2P network

Haibo Yi

Electronic voting (e-voting) is an electronic means for casting and counting votes. It is an efficient and cost-effective way for conducting a voting procedure, which has characteristic of being magnanimous data and real time and requesting high safety. However, concerns on security of networking and privacy of communication for e-voting have been grown. Securing e-voting is very urgent and has becoming a popular topic in the area of communications and networking. We present techniques to exploit blockchain in P2P network to improve the security of e-voting. First, we design a synchronized model of voting records based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) to avoid forgery of votes. Second, we design a user credential model based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) to provide authentication and non-repudiation. Third, we design a withdrawal model that allows voters to change their vote before a preset deadline. By integrating the above designs, a blockchain-based e-voting scheme in P2P network is proposed for essential requirements of e-voting process. To prove and verify the scheme, a blockchain-based e-voting system for multiple candidates has been designed on Linux platforms in P2P network. The system involves electronic voting theory, cryptography, and software engineering theory. The implementation result shows that it is a practical and secure e-voting system, which solves the problem on forgery of votes during e-voting. The blockchain-based e-voting system can be applied to a variety of networking applications directly.

Compress-Store on Blockchain: A Decentralized Data Processing and Immutable Storage for Multimedia Streaming

Åžuayb S. Arslan, Turguy Goker

Decentralization for data storage is a challenging problem for blockchain-based solutions as the blocksize plays the key role for scalability. In addition, specific requirements of multimedia data calls for various changes in the blockchain technology internals. Considering one of the most popular applications of secure multimedia streaming, i.e., video surveillance, it is not clear how to judiciously encode incentivization, immutability and compression into a viable ecosystem. In this study, we provide a genuine scheme that achieves this encoding for a video surveillance application. The proposed scheme provides a novel integration of data compression, immutable off-chain data storage using a new consensus protocol namely, Proof-of-WorkStore (PoWS) in order to enable fully useful work to be performed by the miner nodes of the network. The proposed idea is the first step towards achieving greener application of blockchain-based environment to the video storage business that utilizes system resources efficiently.

Integrating Privacy Enhancing Techniques into Blockchains Using Sidechains

Reza M. Parizi, Sajad Homayoun, Abbas Yazdinejad, Ali Dehghantanha · 5 authors

Blockchains are turning into decentralized computing platforms and are getting worldwide recognition for their unique advantages. There is an emerging trend beyond payments that blockchains could enable a new breed of decentralized applications, and serve as the foundation for Internet's security infrastructure. The immutable nature of the blockchain makes it a winner on security and transparency; it is nearly inconceivable for ledgers to be altered in a way not instantly clear to every single user involved. However, most blockchains fall short in privacy aspects, particularly in data protection. Garlic Routing and Onion Routing are two of major Privacy Enhancing Techniques (PETs) which are popular for anonymization and security. Garlic Routing is a methodology using by I2P Anonymous Network to hide the identity of sender and receiver of data packets by bundling multiple messages into a layered encryption structure. The Onion Routing attempts to provide low-latency Internet-based connections that resist traffic analysis, deanonymization attack, eavesdropping, and other attacks both by outsiders (e.g. Internet routers) and insiders (Onion Routing servers themselves). As there are a few controversies over the rate of resistance of these two techniques to privacy attacks, we propose a PET-Enabled Sidechain (PETES) as a new privacy enhancing technique by integrating Garlic Routing and Onion Routing into a Garlic Onion Routing (GOR) framework suitable to the structure of blockchains. The preliminary proposed GOR aims to improve the privacy of transactions in blockchains via PETES structure.

Towards Blockchain Interoperability: Improving Video Games Data Exchange

Léo Besançon, Catarina Ferreira da Silva, Parisa Ghodous

Current solutions for designing and building decentralized blockchain applications lack interoperability. Consequently, blockchains and existing technologies do not integrate well in a unified framework. This integration is necessary to work around some of the blockchains constraints, such as scalability of transactions and ergonomics. Indeed, blockchains are not suitable for huge data storage, but there are distributed data storage solutions that can be used in a decentralized blockchain application. Regarding ergonomics, the use of blockchain technology should be in the background and transparent for users that may not know how to set up and secure a blockchain-based application. We propose an architecture aiming to easily link existing decentralized technologies and blockchains. We then discuss the impact of this architecture for the video game industry. As a result, we propose an original data representation of blockchain gaming assets in order to improve data exchanges in this industry.

ParkChain: An IoT Parking Service Based on Blockchain

Z. Zinonos, Panayiotis Christodoulou, Andreas S. Andreou, Savvas A. Chatzichristofis

The IoT ecosystem is evolving quickly, developing several applications in different sectors. The majority of these applications use centralized infrastructures something that poses several challenges especially related to trust and data security. Recently, blockchain has been introduced as an effective solution to IoT applications trying to provide solutions to these challenges. In this paper, we introduce a new decentralized IoT application using blockchain technology, namely, ParkChain. The ParkChain application operates in a way that no one can delete, revert, hack or question the time a registered vehicle securely entered a parking area. In order to evaluate ParkChain, we have implemented the smart contract on top of Ethereum Blockchain along with a traditional Image Processing / Computer Vision approach for License Plate Recognition, and using a Raspberry Pi we control the access on a parking place. We report on several experiments that assess the performance of ParkChain application.

ARCHANGEL: Tamper-proofing Video Archives using Temporal Content Hashes on the Blockchain

Tu Bui, Daniel Cooper, John Collomosse, Mark Bell · 11 authors

We present ARCHANGEL; a novel distributed ledger based system for assuring the long-term integrity of digital video archives. First, we describe a novel deep network architecture for computing compact temporal content hashes (TCHs) from audio-visual streams with durations of minutes or hours. Our TCHs are sensitive to accidental or malicious content modification (tampering) but invariant to the codec used to encode the video. This is necessary due to the curatorial requirement for archives to format shift video over time to ensure future accessibility. Second, we describe how the TCHs (and the models used to derive them) are secured via a proof-of-authority blockchain distributed across multiple independent archives. We report on the efficacy of ARCHANGEL within the context of a trial deployment in which the national government archives of the United Kingdom, Estonia and Norway participated.

Bitcoin and Blockchain: Security and Privacy

Ehab Zaghloul, Tongtong Li, Matt W. Mutka, Jian Ren

Blockchain is a technology that was proposed to enable the decentralized digital currency, Bitcoin. Since its inception, blockchain has been widely used in many other areas, including tracing sensor data and mitigating its duplication in IoT applications, the healthcare industry, and e-voting. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review and analysis of the major security and privacy issues of Bitcoin and blockchain, the major challenges, and opportunities in utilizing the technology. First, we present a comprehensive background of Bitcoin and the preliminary on security. Second, the major security threats and countermeasures of Bitcoin are investigated. We analyze the risk of double-spending attacks, evaluate the probability of success in performing the attacks, and derive the profitability for the attacker to perform such attacks. Third, we analyze the underlying Bitcoin peer-to-peer network security risks and Bitcoin storage security. We compare three types of Bitcoin wallets in terms of security, types of services, and their tradeoffs. Finally, we discuss the security and privacy features of alternative cryptocurrencies and present an overview of emerging technologies today. Our results can help Bitcoin users to determine a tradeoff between the risk of double-spending attempts and the transaction time delay or confidence before accepting transactions. These results can also assist miners to develop suitable strategies to get involved in the mining process and maximize their profits.

Privacy-Preserving Smart Parking System Using Blockchain and Private Information Retrieval

Wesam Al Amiri, Mohamed Baza, Karim Banawan, Mohamed Mahmoud · 6 authors

Searching for available parking spaces is a major problem for drivers especially in big crowded cities, causing traffic congestion and air pollution, and wasting drivers' time. Smart parking systems are a novel solution to enable drivers to have real-time parking information for pre-booking. However, current smart parking requires drivers to disclose their private information, such as desired destinations. Moreover, the existing schemes are centralized and vulnerable to the bottleneck of the single point of failure and data breaches. In this paper, we propose a distributed privacy-preserving smart parking system using blockchain. A consortium blockchain created by different parking lot owners to ensure security, transparency, and availability is proposed to store their parking offers on the blockchain. To preserve drivers' location privacy, we adopt a private information retrieval (PIR) technique to enable drivers to retrieve parking offers from blockchain nodes privately, without revealing which parking offers are retrieved. Furthermore, a short randomizable signature is used to enable drivers to reserve available parking slots in an anonymous manner. Besides, we introduce an anonymous payment system that cannot link drivers' to specific parking locations. Finally, our performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can preserve drivers' privacy with low communication and computation overhead.

Blockchain Based Metering and Billing System Proposal with Privacy Protection for the Electric Network

Ahmet Onder Gur, Safak Oksuzer, Enis Karaarslan

Measurement of energy especially electricity consumption becomes an issue in big cities. Electricity usage monitoring is becoming more crucial and there is a need for the instant view of active energy usage. Solutions like smart grids are possible. Smart grids give a view in macro-level, there is also a need of a micro-level view. We mean a small region's or customer's usage when we mean micro-level view. The privacy of the personal data and the user's trust in the system should also be considered in these scenarios. This study aims to propose such an alternative system which uses blockchain technology and Internet of Things (IoT) devices for the metering and billing of the customer for the electric network. The trust and privacy issues are aimed to be solved. Blockchain can provide safer and more transparent solutions with its decentralized structure. Raspberry Pi is used to simulate metering, Hyperledger Fabric is selected as a blockchain system. A scalable and energy efficient energy tracking system with blockchain and IoT devices is proposed. A prototype system is formed and the possible usage scenario is simulated on the prototype.

A comparison between the secp256r1 and the koblitz secp256k1 bitcoin curves

Azine Houria, Bencherif Mohamed Abdelkader, Abderezzak Guessoum

Bitcoin uses elliptic curve cryptography for its keys and signatures, but the specific secp256k1 curve used is rather unusual. The ECDSA keys used to generate Bitcoin addresses and sign transactions are derived from some specific parameters. Due to this characteristic, several questions come up concerning Satoshi’s choice of this curve rather than that of the NIST standard secp256r1 curve. Former President Dan Brown’s address to Bitcoin users on the Bitcoin talk.org online forum concerning the use of secp256k1 in Bitcoin of SECG showed his surprise to see someone uses SECG secp256k1 instead of secp256r1 of NIST.In this article, we will analyze the random secp256r1 curve and the Koblitz Secp256k1 curve (parameters, equation, automorphism…), by giving the strengths and weaknesses of each one of them, in order to justify the choice of Bitcoin’s creator, and then we will tackle the mining using the new graphic cards.

Prospective Applications of Blockchain and Bitcoin Cryptocurrency Technology

Nasser Taleb

This paper presents a literature review of Blockchain and Bitcoin technology future applications. Recently Blockchain has received special attention and is used as a new platform for digital information and to store encrypted data and process secure digital transactions. Noticeably, the majority of Blockchain cryptocurrency is structured based on the elliptic curves digital signature algorithm (ECDSA). In particular, Bitcoin uses special ECDSA called secp256k1. Losses of personal and organizational data occurred due to security breaches of data at small and large scales using traditional transactional and financial platforms. Furthermore, data on Blockchain and Bitcoin platforms are assumed to be highly encrypted and in secured state.

Probabilistic Smart Contracts: Secure Randomness on the Blockchain

Krishnendu Chatterjee, Amir Kafshdar Goharshady, Arash Pourdamghani

In today's programmable blockchains, smart contracts are limited to being deterministic and non-probabilistic. This lack of randomness is a consequential limitation, given that a wide variety of real-world financial contracts, such as casino games and lotteries, depend entirely on randomness. As a result, several ad-hoc random number generation approaches have been developed to be used in smart contracts. These include ideas such as using an oracle or relying on the block hash. However, these approaches are manipulatable, i.e. their output can be tampered with by parties who might not be neutral, such as the owner of the oracle or the miners. We propose a novel game-theoretic approach for generating provably unmanipulatable pseudorandom numbers on the blockchain. Our approach allows smart contracts to access a trustworthy source of randomness that does not rely on potentially compromised miners or oracles, hence enabling the creation of a new generation of smart contracts that are not limited to being non-probabilistic and can be drawn from the much more general class of probabilistic programs.

Measurement and Analysis of the Bitcoin Networks: A View from Mining Pools

Canhui Wang, Xiaowen Chu, Yang Qin

Mining pools, the main components of the Bitcoin network, dominate the computing resources and play essential roles in network security and performance aspects. Although many existing measurements of the Bitcoin network are available, little is known about the details of mining pool behaviors (e.g., empty blocks, mining revenue and transaction collection strategies) and their effects on the Bitcoin end users (e.g., transaction fees, transaction delay and transaction acceptance rate). This paper aims to fill this gap with a systematic study of mining pools. We traced over 1.56 hundred thousand blocks (including about 257 million historical transactions) from February 2016 to January 2019 and collected over 120.25 million unconfirmed transactions from March 2018 to January 2019. Then we conducted a board range of measurements on the pool evolutions, labeled transactions (blocks) as well as real-time network traffics, and discovered new interesting observations and features. Specifically, our measurements show the following. 1) A few mining pools entities continuously control most of the computing resources of the Bitcoin network. 2) Mining pools are caught in a prisoner's dilemma where mining pools compete to increase their computing resources even though the unit profit of the computing resource decreases. 3) Mining pools are stuck in a Malthusian trap where there is a stage at which the Bitcoin incentives are inadequate for feeding the exponential growth of the computing resources. 4) The market price and transaction fees are not sensitive to the event of halving block rewards. 5) The block interval of empty blocks is significantly lower than the block interval of non-empty blocks. 6) Feerate plays a dominating role in transaction collection strategy for the top mining pools. Our measurements and analysis help to understand and improve the Bitcoin network.

Scalable and Privacy-Preserving Design of On/Off-Chain Smart Contracts

Chao Li, Balaji Palanisamy, Runhua Xu

The rise of smart contract systems such as Ethereum has resulted in a proliferation of blockchain-based decentralized applications including applications that store and manage a wide range of data. Current smart contracts are designed to be executed solely by miners and are revealed entirely on-chain, resulting in reduced scalability and privacy. In this paper, we discuss that scalability and privacy of smart contracts can be enhanced by splitting a given contract into an off-chain contract and an on-chain contract. Specifically, functions of the contract that involve high-cost computation or sensitive information can be split and included as the off-chain contract, that is signed and executed by only the interested participants. The proposed approach allows the participants to reach unanimous agreement off-chain when all of them are honest, allowing computing resources of miners to be saved and content of the off-chain contract to be hidden from the public. In case of a dispute caused by any dishonest participants, a signed copy of the off-chain contract can be revealed so that a verified instance can be created to make miners enforce the true execution result. Thus, honest participants have the ability to redress and penalize any fraudulent or dishonest behavior, which incentivizes all participants to honestly follow the agreed off-chain contract. We discuss techniques for splitting a contract into a pair of on/off-chain contracts and propose a mechanism to address the challenges of handling dishonest participants in the system. Our implementation and evaluation of the proposed approach using an example smart contract demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in Ethereum.

A systematic literature review of blockchain cyber security

Paul J. Taylor, Tooska Dargahi, Ali Dehghantanha, Reza M. Parizi · 5 authors

Since the publication of Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper on Bitcoin in 2008, blockchain has (slowly) become one of the most frequently discussed methods for securing data storage and transfer through decentralized, trustless, peer-to-peer systems. This research identifies peer-reviewed literature that seeks to utilize blockchain for cyber security purposes and presents a systematic analysis of the most frequently adopted blockchain security applications. Our findings show that the Internet of Things (IoT) lends itself well to novel blockchain applications, as do networks and machine visualization, public-key cryptography, web applications, certification schemes and the secure storage of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This timely systematic review also sheds light on future directions of research, education and practices in the blockchain and cyber security space, such as security of blockchain in IoT, security of blockchain for AI data, and sidechain security.

Giving State to the Stateless: Augmenting Trustworthy Computation with Ledgers

Gabriel Kaptchuk, Matthew Green, Ian Miers

In this work we investigate new computational properties that can be achieved by combining stateless trusted devices with public ledgers. We consider a hybrid paradigm in which a client-side device (such as a co-processor or trusted enclave) performs secure computation, while interacting with a public ledger via a possibly malicious host computer. We explore both the constructive and potentially destructive implications of such systems. We first show that this combination allows for the construction of stateful interactive functionalities (including general computation) even when the device has no persistent storage; this allows us to build sophisticated applications using inexpensive trusted hardware or even pure cryptographic obfuscation techniques. We further show how to use this paradigm to achieve censorship-resistant communication with a network, even when network communications are mediated by a potentially malicious host. Finally we describe a number of practical applications that can be achieved today. These include the synchronization of private smart contracts; rate limited mandatory logging; strong encrypted backups from weak passwords; enforcing fairness in multi-party computation; and destructive applications such as autonomous ransomware, which allows for payments without an online party.
