SynergyGrids: blockchain-supported distributed microgrid energy trading

Moayad Aloqaily, Ouns Bouachir, Öznur Özkasap, Faizan Safdar Ali

Abstract Growing intelligent cities is witnessing an increasing amount of local energy generation through renewable energy resources. Energy trade among the local energy generators ( aka prosumers) and consumers can reduce the energy consumption cost and also reduce the dependency on conventional energy resources, not to mention the environmental, economic, and societal benefits. However, these local energy sources might not be enough to fulfill energy consumption demands. A hybrid approach, where consumers can buy energy from both prosumers (that generate energy) and also from prosumer of other locations, is essential. A centralized system can be used to manage this energy trading that faces several security issues and increase centralized development cost. In this paper, a hybrid energy trading system coupled with a smart contract named SynergyGrids has been proposed as a solution, that reduces the average cost of energy and load over the utility grids. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first attempt to create a hybrid energy trading platform over the smart contract for energy demand prediction. An hourly energy data set has been utilized for testing and validation purposes. The trading system shows 17.8% decrease in energy cost for consumers and 76.4% decrease in load over utility grids when compared with its counterparts.

Optimal Contract Power and Battery Energy Storage System Capacity for Smart Buildings

Zahra Foroozandeh, Sérgio Ramos, João Soares, Zita Vale

This paper proposed a Mixed Binary Linear Programming (MBLP) approach to find the optimal size of some components of a Smart Building (SB) attempting to reduce the overall cost. The considered SB is equipped with local resources such as Photovoltaic (PV) panels, Electrical Vehicles (EVs), and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Moreover, the SB is only connected with the grid by an Energy Management System (EMS) in which the whole SB has a single Contract Power (CP) such that EMS manages the power flow among external grid, local resources, apartments, and common services, for the goal of reducing the electricity bill. Hence, the wrong choice of CP and BESS capacity will impose unnecessary charges on the electricity bill. As a results, EMS has played a crucial role in SB in determining the best CP and BESS values. The obtained results of this work show the efficiency of the model in which by finding the optimal capacity of CP and BESS, the electricity bill improves by a 34% reduction.

Automated Scheduling Approach under Smart Contract for Remote Wind Farms with Power-to-Gas Systems in Multiple Energy Markets

Zhenya Ji, Zishan Guo, Hao Li, Qi Wang

The promising power-to-gas (P2G) technology makes it possible for wind farms to absorb carbon and trade in multiple energy markets. Considering the remoteness of wind farms equipped with P2G systems and the isolation of different energy markets, the scheduling process may suffer from inefficient coordination and unstable information. An automated scheduling approach is thus proposed. Firstly, an automated scheduling framework enabled by smart contract is established for reliable coordination between wind farms and multiple energy markets. Considering the limited logic complexity and insufficient calculation of smart contracts, an off-chain procedure as a workaround is proposed to avoid complex on-chain solutions. Next, a non-linear model of the P2G system is developed to enhance the accuracy of scheduling results. The scheduling strategy takes into account not only the revenues from multiple energy trades, but also the penalties for violating contract items in smart contracts. Then, the implementation of smart contracts under a blockchain environment is presented with multiple participants, including voting in an agreed scheduling result as the plan. Finally, the case study is conducted in a typical two-stage scheduling process—i.e., day-ahead and real-time scheduling—and the results verify the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Transaction Fees on a Honeymoon: Ethereum's EIP-1559 One Month Later

Daniël Reijsbergen, Shyam Sridhar, Barnabé Monnot, Stefanos Leonardos · 6 authors

Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559 was recently implemented to transform Ethereum's transaction fee market. EIP-1559 utilizes an algorithmic update rule with a constant learning rate to estimate a base fee. The base fee reflects prevailing network conditions and hence provides a more reliable oracle for current gas prices. Using on-chain data from the period after its launch, we evaluate the impact of EIP-1559 on the user experience and market performance. Our empirical findings suggest that although EIP-1559 achieves its goals on average, short-term behavior is marked by intense, chaotic oscillations in block sizes (as predicted by our recent theoretical dynamical system analysis [1]) and slow adjustments during periods of demand bursts (e.g., NFT drops). Both phenomena lead to unwanted inter-block variability in mining rewards. To address this issue, we propose an alternative base fee adjustment rule in which the learning rate varies according to an additive increase, multiplicative decrease (AIMD) update scheme. Our simulations show that the latter robustly outperforms the EIP-1559 protocol under various demand scenarios. These results provide evidence that variable learning rate mechanisms may constitute a promising alternative to the default EIP-1559-based format and contribute to the ongoing discussion on the design of more efficient transaction fee markets.

EPS-Ledger: Blockchain Hyperledger Sawtooth-Enabled Distributed Power Systems Chain of Operation and Control Node Privacy and Security

Abdullah Ayub Khan, Asif Ali Laghari, Desheng Liu, Aftab Ahmed Shaikh · 7 authors

A distributed power system operation and control node privacy and security are attractive research questions that deliver electrical energy systems to the participating stakeholders without being physically connected to the grid system. The increased use of renewable energy in the power grid environment creates serious issues, for example, connectivity, transmission, distribution, control, balancing, and monitoring volatility on both sides. This poses extreme challenges to tackle the entire bidirectional power flow throughout the system. To build distributed monitoring and a secure control operation of node transactions in the real-time system that can manage and execute power exchanging and utilizing, balancing, and maintaining energy power failure. This paper proposed a blockchain Hyperledger Sawtooth enabling a novel and secure distributed energy transmission node in the EPS-ledger network architecture with a robust renewable power infiltration. The paper focuses on a cyber-physical power grid control and monitoring system of renewable energy and protects this distributed network transaction on the blockchain and stores a transparent digital ledger of power. The Hyperledger Sawtooth-enabled architecture allows stakeholders to exchange information related to power operations and control monitoring in a private ledger network architecture and investigate the different activities, preserved in the interplanetary file systems. Furthermore, we design, create, and deploy digital contracts of the cyber–physical energy monitoring system, which allows interaction between participating stakeholders and registration and presents the overall working operations of the proposed architecture through a sequence diagram. The proposed solution delivers integrity, confidentiality, transparency, availability, and control access of the distribution of the power system and maintains an immutable operations and control monitoring ledger by secure blockchain technology.

Proposed framework for blockchain technology in a decentralised energy network

Oliver Dzobo, Bessie Malila, Lindokhuhle Sithole

Abstract The integration of distributed renewable energy sources into the conventional power grid has become a hot research topic, all part of attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emission. There are many distributed renewable energy sources available and the network participants in energy delivery have also increased. This makes the management of the new power grid with integrated distributed renewable energy sources extremely complex. Applying the technical advantages of blockchain technology to this complex system to manage peer-to-peer energy sharing, transmission, data storage and build smart contracts between network participants can develop an optimal consensus mechanism within the new power grid. This paper proposes a new framework for the application of blockchain in a decentralised energy network. The microgrid is assumed to be private and managed by local prosumers. An overview description of the proposed model and a case study are presented in the paper.

A Cost-Efficient-Based Cooperative Allocation of Mining Devices and Renewable Resources Enhancing Blockchain Architecture

Mohamed A. Mohamed, Seyedali Mirjalili, Udaya Dampage, Saleh H. Salmen · 6 authors

The impressive furtherance of communication technologies has exhorted industrial companies to link-up these developments with their own abilities with the target of efficiency enhancement through smart supervision and control. With this in mind, the blockchain platform is a prospective solution for merging communication technologies and industrial infrastructures, but there are several challenges. Such obstacles should be addressed to effectively adopt this technology. One of the most recent challenges relative to adopting blockchain technology is the energy consumption of miners. Thus, providing an accurate approach that addresses the underlying cause of the problem will carry weight in the future. This work addresses managing the energy consumption of miners by using the advantage of distributed generation resources (DGRs). Along the same vein, it appears that achieving the optimal solution requires executing the modified reconfirmation of DGRs and miners (indeed, mining pool systems) in the smart grid. In order to perform this task, this article utilizes the Intelligent Priority Selection (IPS) method since this method is up to snuff for corporative allocation. In order to find practical solutions for this problem, the uncertainty is also modeled as a credible index highly correlated with the load and generation. All in all, it can be said that the outcome of this research study can help researchers in the field of enhancement of social welfare by using the proposed technology.

Single contract power optimization: A novel business model for smart buildings using intelligent energy management

Zahra Foroozandeh, Sérgio Ramos, João Soares, Zita Vale · 5 authors

Typically, residential buildings neither allow flexibility in the individual contract power capacity nor considers buildings as unique electricity consumers. In this work, a smart building is designed that each electricity customer has flexible contract power and the whole collective residential building has a single contract power. A management entity is considered to manage all energy resources of the building such as the photovoltaic generation, electric vehicles, and battery energy storage system, taking into consideration the consumption from apartments and common services, to minimize the electricity bill. Hence, the best/optimal contract power capacity will contribute to minimizing electricity costs. Therefore, finding the optimal decision of the contract power value has received a significant role from the energy management in smart buildings. In this paper, a mixed binary optimization problem is formulated in which not only the optimal value of contract power is yield but the optimal schedule of the electric vehicle/battery storage charge and discharge are found, taking into consideration the photovoltaic generation and load consumption profiles. The proposed model is implemented for three scenarios, and the obtained results show that the model efficiency has a high performance with a significant electricity cost reduction, around 47%. The results pointed that using an optimal value of single contract power and intelligent management system, the building electricity costs decrease remarkably.

DLT-based equity crowdfunding on the techno-economic feasibility of solar energy investments

Ugur Halden, Ümit Cali, Marthe Fogstad Dynge, Joseph Stekli · 5 authors

Advancements in material science and production technologies of solar photovoltaics (PV) system components, have obvious impacts in terms of Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) reductions over time. Beside such technologies in physical sciences, digitalization technologies have increasingly positive impacts on the cost efficient operation and investment planning of the solar energy investments and keep the current cost decline trajectory for the PV industry. One option to achieve this may be through digital financial innovations such as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) based crowdfunding for project finance. This option would enable multiple small investors to offer loans with lower interest rates and longer debt tenors than traditional financiers, such as banks, while increasing the acceptable debt fraction for a project due to the higher risk tolerance of individual investors coupled with the risk reduction that this innovation could allow. This new aspect of the digital partial ownership of the energy projects is demonstrated using a functional DLT-based crowdfunding mechanism. Furthermore, impacts of the proposed approach is demonstrated by calculating the LCOE values for the European countries by comparing with the traditional investment options. According to the findings of this study digitalization technologies especially DLT has positive impact in terms of reducing the financial costs and also LCOE values of solar energy projects. Additionally, these estimated cost values are used for analyzing the grid parity of PV systems in each assessed country. This article presents a digitization based methodology that has a high potential to accelerate the Digital Green Shift in future.

Blockchain-based solution for energy demand-side management of residential buildings

Arman Kolahan, Seyed Reza Maadi, Zahra Teymouri, Corrado Schenone

Smart homes, connected through a network, can optimize the energy consumption and general load shape of their area. In this work, a blockchain-based smart solution is presented for demand-side management of residential buildings in a neighborhood to improve Peaks to Average Ratios (PAR) of power load, reduce energy consumption, and increase the thermal comfort of occupants by modeling heating, illumination, and appliance systems. For real-time power and temperature monitoring of the neighborhood, a transient numerical physical model has been developed. The simulator has been validated with data measured from a building in Northern Italy. Then, a neighborhood with 2,000 households has been modeled for different occupancy patterns, initial values, and boundary conditions. Two different control scenarios, namely basic and smart, have been considered. In the basic scenario, everything is managed by occupants except the boiler, which is controlled by the indoor temperature of the home. Instead, in the smart scenario, a blockchain-based network has been introduced for buildings to exchange a parameter called the Probability of the Next Hour (PNH). Ethereum Solidity has been deployed for smart contract development in the blockchain. The results show that using blockchain-connected smart controllers aimed at demand-side management can improve PAR, comfort level, and energy efficiency of buildings, which can bring about CO2 reduction on an urban and even global scale.

Blockchain based decentralized local energy flexibility market

Claudia Antal, Tudor Cioara, Marcel Antal, Vlad Mihailescu · 13 authors

Large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources brings new challenges for smart grid management requiring the development of decentralized solutions and active participation of prosumer and non-grid-owned assets. Local energy flexibility markets can help in monitoring energy flows, motivate changes in prosumers’ energy supply and demand, achieving local energy balance, and optimization of electricity flows. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based decentralized energy flexibility market enabling small-scale prosumers to trade in a peer-to-peer fashion their flexibility in terms of load modulation concerning the baseline energy profiles. We have defined an energy flexibility token for digitizing the flexibility of prosumers allowing to be traded on the market as an asset and self-enforcing smart contracts for decentralized market operation including functions such as the placement of flexibility bids/offers, trading session management, or energy and financial settlement of energy flexibility transactions. For matching the flexibility bids and offers, a solution based on a greedy heuristic and a bipartite graph is proposed for minimizing the number of flexibility transactions and reducing the blockchain-associated costs, while Oracles are used to assure its secure integration with the blockchain. The blockchain-based flexibility market was validated with the help of the Terni city Distribution System Operator, showing promising results in enabling the self-consumption of renewable energy generated in a small scale urban micro-grid considering live energy monitoring data, and in assuring the local balancing of the demand side in a simulated environment considering many market participants and historical energy data.

Smart Contract: Blockchain-based Energy Exchange Framework with reduced Transaction Cost

G. Divya, P. Supraja

Smart grid is an innovation in a communication network, interconnected power framework, advanced control technology, and smart metering has been applied to work on the usage of renewable energy resources and alleviate the energy emergency somehow. Blockchain is basically a decentralized accounting ledger with the potential to enable, manage, track and verify thousands of energy transactions per second. The blockchain energy market is proposed to be utilized by networks that share a nanogrid. The application permits nanogrid participants that have an abundance of electrical energy, to offer that energy to different clients of the nanogrid. The application gives a decentralized marketplace for executing electrical energy. Since this blockchain energy market is implemented by Ethereum smart contract, it suffers from the high operating costs that result from the contract's high gas consumption. Ethereum smart contracts are implemented by reworking on acceptoffer function to verifies its validity and withdraw function which uses a single function call for multiple energy transfer contracts to decrease the operation cost.

Optimal operation and management of multi‐microgrids using blockchain technology

Misagh Dehghani Ghotbabadi, Saeed Daneshvar Dehnavi, Hadi Fotoohabadi, Hasan Mehrjerdi · 5 authors

Abstract This paper tries to address the optimal operation of networked microgrid from the reliability perspective in a correlated atmosphere for the wind generators. The suggested approach performs based on unscented transformation in the form of a nonlinear projection and the heuristic method as the optimizer. The proposed structure is arranged as a complex constraint optimization problem with several targets seeing the varied objectives such as energy not supplied, system interruption frequency, system interruption duration and energy losses. Owing to the interrelated natural surroundings of multi‐microgrids, it is a necessity for the microgrids to let the each other access the operation info and with the central unit. In this situation, it is quite wise to provide a secured construction made of the blockchain for the assurance of the reliability and adequate security of data sharing in the microgrids. With the aim of validation of the proposed model, an IEEE standard system is considered and divided into four interrelated microgrids with one side connection to the main grid. The simulation results show the high capability of the proposed framework for enhancing the operation and reliability indices. Moreover, it is seen that almost 0.6% and 0.77% additional cost is imposed to the system in the deterministic framework in the first and second scenarios, respectively.

Trading platform for cooperation and sharing based on blockchain within multi-agent energy internet

Xiaohui Wang, Peng Liu, Zhixiang Ji

With the release of the electricity sales side, large-scale small-capacity distributed power generation units are connected to the distribution side, forming multi-type market entities such as microgrids, integrated energy systems, and virtual power plants. With the large-scale integration of distributed energy, the energy market under the energy internet is different from a traditional transmission grid. It is currently developing in the direction of diversified entities and commodities, a flat structure, and a flexible and competitive multi-agent market mechanism. In this context, this study analyzes the value of combining blockchain and the electricity market presents the design of a blockchain trading framework for multi-agent cooperation and sharing of the energy internet. The nodes in market transactions are modeled through power system modeling in the physical layer and the transaction consensus strategy in the cyber layer; moreover, the nodes are verified in a modified IEEE 13 testing feeder of a distribution network. A transaction example is demonstrated using the multi-agent cooperation and sharing transaction platform based on the Ethereum private blockchain.

Blockchain for Smart Grid Flexibility - Handling Settlements Between the Aggregator and Prosumers

Lasse Berntzen, Qian Meng, Boban Vesin, Marius Rohde Johannessen · 6 authors

This paper shows how the Ethereum blockchain can register settlements between an aggregator and prosumers in a smart grid. By providing flexible use of electricity to the aggregator, customers get rewarded. The flexibility is valuable for the aggregator since the power infrastructure may be used more efficiently. Blockchain is an exciting technology for handling settlements which, however, also has some clear limitations. For example, the cost per transaction on the public Ethereum blockchain is too high compared to the value of the actual transactions. A private blockchain is an alternative but removes some of the original benefits of using the public blockchain. The paper concludes that blockchain is a promising technology, and a private blockchain is more suitable for transactions containing minimal amounts.

Blockchain-Based Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading and Charging Payment System for Electric Vehicles

Prince Waqas Khan, Yung-Cheol Byun

The world is moving rapidly from carbon-producing vehicles to green transportation systems. Electric vehicles (EV) are a big step towards a friendly mode of transport. With the constant rise in the number of electric vehicles, we need a widespread and seamless charging infrastructure that supports seamless charging and billing. Some users generate electricity using solar panels and charge their electric vehicles. In contrast, some use charging stations, and they pay for vehicle charging. This raises the question of trust and transparency. There are many countries where laws are not strictly enforced to prevent fraud in payment systems. One of the preeminent problems presently existing with any of the trading systems is the lack of transparency. The service provider can overcharge the customer. Blockchain is a modern-day solution that mitigates trust and privacy issues. We have proposed a peer-to-peer energy trading and charging payment system for electric vehicles based on blockchain technology. Users who have excess electricity which they can sell to the charging stations through smart contracts. Electric vehicle users can pay the charging bills through electronic wallets. We have developed the electric vehicle’s automatic-payment system using the open-source platform Hyperledger fabric. The proposed system will reduce human interaction and increase trust, transparency, and privacy among EV participants. We have analyzed the resource utilization and also performed average transaction latency and throughput evaluation. This system can be helpful for the policymakers of smart cities.

Enhanced Profitability of Photovoltaic Plants By Utilizing Cryptocurrency-Based Mining Load

Bilal M. Eid, Md. Rabiul Islam, Rakibuzzaman Shah, Abdullah-Al Nahid · 6 authors

The grid connected photovoltaic (PV) power plants (PVPPs) are booming nowadays. The main problem facing the PV power plants deployment is the intermittency which leads to instability of the grid. In order to stabilize the grid, either energy storage device - mainly batteries - or a power curtailment technique can be used. The additional cost on utilizing batteries make it not preferred solution, because it leads to a drop in the return on investment (ROI) of the project. A good alternative, is using a customized load (such as; cryptocurrency-based loads) which consumes the surplus energy. This paper investigating the usage of a customized load - cryptocurrency mining rig - to create an added value for the owner of the plant and increase the ROI of the project. These devices are widely used to perform the required calculations for validating the transactions on the network of the Blockchain. A comparison between the ROI of the mining rig and the battery have been conducted in this study. Based on this study the mining rig has superior ROI of 7.7% - in the case with the lowest ROI - compared to 4.5% for battery. Moreover, an improved controlling strategy is developed to combine both the battery and mining rig in the same system. The developed strategy is able to keep the profitability as high as possible during the fluctuation of the mining network.

A Novel Bitcoin and Block Chain Based Energy Exchange in a New Microgrid Design

Dr. Ghous Bakhsh, Ghulam Rasool

We are proposing an approach employing microgrid through which community can efficiently fulfill each other needs of energy. This model will allow micro-grid prosumers to produce, consume and trade energy deprived of any barrier. At present, such a system is not accepted because it requires the “collaboration” of central energy distributors. In our solution, we visualize the use of a blockchain system with the support of smart contracts to provide decentralization. The energy is sent to the central energy storage from the prosumer and is stored there until the consumer claims it. Using smart energy (electricity) meters the flow of electricity can be tracked accurately in both ways, neighbors can purchase spare electricity using tokens rather than paying money. As blockchain takes care of the accounting part, it records the terms of the contracts, tracks how many energy credits have been sold, by whom and to whom. The micro-grid is facilitated by its own smart contract and it can share a desired amount of energy to a connected energy consumer. The customer is aware of how much consumption energy is available at any time in the central storage. The smart contract of the micro-grid takes as input HECs (helios coin) or a bit coin and then releases the energy that corresponds to the calculated amount of HECs or bit coin received by the sender in form of the payment. The test is to monitor these exchanges and repay purchasers and dealers likewise. This project is an effort to utilize blockchain methodology for the trade of sun-based power among members effectively, without any need of third party vendors.
