A Blockchain Footprint for Authentication of IoT-Enabled Smart Devices in Smart Cities: State-of-the-Art Advancements, Challenges and Future Research Directions

Usman Khalil, Mueen-Uddin, Owais Ahmed Malik, Saddam Hussain

The mechanisms based on the distributed environment have become an obvious choice for solutions, while they have not been limited only to a specific domain (i.e., crypto-currency). Rather, it has influenced other industries to develop robust privacy and security solutions, such as smart houses, smart electrical grids, smart agriculture, smart health care, smart transportation, etc. These Cyber-Physical Systems heavily depend on IoT-based smart devices that constitute a networked system of devices dependent on each other for the smooth operation of the overall system. Hence, security and privacy have become an integral part of all the architectural frameworks they operate in. The adoption of these architectures, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Cyber-Physical Things (IoCPT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and Internet of Everything (IoE), has reinforced the need to develop solutions based on a distributed environment. Distributed ledger technology, i.e., Blockchain, has taken the lead and may support the development of solutions with robust privacy and security. We provide an updated review of authentication mechanisms developed on blockchain technology that enforce decentralized architectures. We discuss the security issues regarding the authentication of these IoT-enabled smart devices. We evaluate and analyze the study of the proposed literature schemes that pose authentication challenges in terms of computational costs, communication overheads, and models applied to attain robustness. Hence, lightweight solutions for managing, maintaining, processing, and storing authentication data of IoT-enabled assets are a must. From an integration perspective, cloud computing has provided strong support. In contrast, decentralized ledger technology, i.e., Blockchain, and lightweight cryptosystems are the areas for much more to explore. Finally, we discuss the future research challenges, which present an improvement standpoint to help address the ambiguities.

Design of Secure Mutual Authentication Scheme for Metaverse Environments Using Blockchain

Jongseok Ryu, Seunghwan Son, Joonyoung Lee, Yohan Park · 5 authors

During the COVID-19 pandemic, engagement in various remote activities such as online education and meetings has increased. However, since the conventional online environments typically provide simple streaming services using cameras and microphones, there have limitations in terms of physical expression and experiencing real-world activities such as cultural and economic activities. Recently, metaverse environments, three-dimensional virtual reality that use avatars, have attracted increasing attention as a means to solve these problems. Thus, many metaverse platforms such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite have been emerging to provide various services to users. However, such metaverse environments are potentially vulnerable to various security threats because the users and platform servers communicate through public channels. In addition, sensitive user data such as identity, password, and biometric information are managed by each platform server. In this paper, we design a system model that can guarantee secure communication and transparently manage user identification data in metaverse environments using blockchain technology. We also propose a mutual authentication scheme using biometric information and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) to provide secure communication between users and platform servers and secure avatar interactions between avatars and avatars. To demonstrate the security of the proposed mutual authentication scheme, we perform informal security analysis, Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic, Real-or-Random (ROR) model, and Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA). In addition, we compare the computation costs, communication costs, and security features of the proposed scheme with existing schemes in similar environments. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has lower computation and communication costs and can provide a wider range of security features than existing schemes. Thus, our proposed scheme can be used to provide secure metaverse environments.

A Privacy-Preserving Biometric Authentication System With Binary Classification in a Zero Knowledge Proof Protocol

Quang Nhat Tran, Benjamin Turnbull, Min Wang, Jiankun Hu

Biometric authentication is, over time, becoming an indispensable complementary component to traditional authentication methods that use passwords and tokens. As a result, the research interest in the protection techniques for the biometric template has also grown considerably. In this paper, we present a light-weight AI-based biometric authentication that operates based on the binary representation of a biometric instance. In details, a binary classifier will be trained using the binary strings that represent the intraclass and interclass biometric subjects. The Support Vector Machine and Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Network are chosen as the classifier to evaluate the fingerprint-based and iris-based authentication capability. Afterward, the authenticated biometric string is fed to a hash function to produce a hash value, which is to be used in a Zero-Knowledge-Proof Protocol for the purpose of privacy preservation. In order to improve the recognition of the classifier, we devise a simple yet efficient strategy to enhance the discriminativeness of the binary strings and name it the Composite Features Retrieval. We evaluated the proposed method with the four publicly available fingerprint datasets FVC2002-DB1, FVC2002-DB2, FVC2002-DB3, and FVC2004-DB2 and the iris dataset UBIRISv1. The promising performance shows this method's capability.

Blockchain-Based Authentication in Internet of Vehicles: A Survey

Sohail Abbas, Manar Abu Talib, Afaf Ahmed, Faheem Khan · 6 authors

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has emerged as an advancement over the traditional Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) towards achieving a more efficient intelligent transportation system that is capable of providing various intelligent services and supporting different applications for the drivers and passengers on roads. In order for the IoV and VANETs environments to be able to offer such beneficial road services, huge amounts of data are generated and exchanged among the different communicated entities in these vehicular networks wirelessly via open channels, which could attract the adversaries and threaten the network with several possible types of security attacks. In this survey, we target the authentication part of the security system while highlighting the efficiency of blockchains in the IoV and VANETs environments. First, a detailed background on IoV and blockchain is provided, followed by a wide range of security requirements, challenges, and possible attacks in vehicular networks. Then, a more focused review is provided on the recent blockchain-based authentication schemes in IoV and VANETs with a detailed comparative study in terms of techniques used, network models, evaluation tools, and attacks counteracted. Lastly, some future challenges for IoV security are discussed that are necessary to be addressed in the upcoming research.

Blockchain-Based Authentication and Registration Mechanism for SIP-Based VoIP Systems

Mwrwan Abubakar, Zakwan Jaroucheh, Ahmed Al Dubai, Bill Buchanan

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the principal signalling protocol in Voice over IP (VoIP) systems, responsible for initialising, terminating, and maintaining sessions amongst call parties. However, the problem with the SIP protocol is that it was not designed to be secure by nature as the HTTP digest authentication used in SIP is insecure, making it vulnerable to a variety of attacks. The current solutions rely on several standardised encryption protocols, such as TLS and IPsec, to protect SIP registration messages. However, the current centralised solutions do not scale well and cause algorithm overload when encoding and decoding SIP messages. In trying to rectify this issue, we propose in this paper a blockchain-based lightweight authentication mechanism, which involves a decentralised identity model to authenticate the SIP client to the SIP server. Our mechanism uses a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain to ensure trust, accountability and preserves user privacy. We provided a proof-of-concept implementation to demonstrate our work. Further analysis of this approach's usability, mainly CPU and memory usage, was conducted comparing to IPsec and TLS. Then we discussed our system's security and presented a security analysis. Our analysis proves that our approach satisfies the SIP protocol security requirements.

Bcvop2p: Decentralized Blockchain-Based Authentication Scheme for Secure Voice Communication

Mustafa Kara, Muhammed Ali Aydın, Hasan H. Balık

Peer-to-peer VoIP applications are exposed to threats in the Internet environment as they carry out conversations over the Internet, which is an electronic communication line, and its security has always been largely a matter of concern. Authentication of the caller is the first line of defense among the security principles and is an important principle to provide security in VoIP application. Authentication methods in VoIP applications are usually based on trusted third parties or through centralized architecture. This situation creates problems in terms of single point of failure and privacy in call security over IP based communications. However, blockchain technology with a distributed architecture offers an innovative solution to multimedia communication authentication model. In this paper, a blockchain-based mutual authentication scheme for VoIP applications is proposed. In addition, the model's having a comprehensive security structure against various threats is explained via security and communication cost analysis. The proposed schema shows better performance than the methods that make a verification through the centralized architecture in the literature. The proposed model has been formally verified using the AVISPA tool, and it has been proven that the model is safe against potential threats.

Decentralized Loan Management Application Using Smart Contracts on Block Chain

K. S. Arikumar, Deepak Kumar A, GowthamC, Sahaya Beni Prathiba

The most shocking events were was the recent discovery of the fraudulent activities in the Punjab National Bank. This is due to frequent systemic failures that detect human errors. Blockchain technology is the greatest solution for this issue. It is surprisingly common for the information settlement mechanism like SWIFT to be on a isolated ledger from the payment settlement mechanism. If the banks uses a ledger that stores information settlement distributed across all the participants, then the fraudulent user may reflect on all the available participants in the transactions, auditors and regulators. Our Paper is a Decentralised Loan Management Web Application (DApp) built on Ethereum blockchain which targets on preventing such fraudulent attacks on Loans sanctions by decentralising the processes. The security features authentication of the user identity, authentication of bank officials and multiple levels of verification of details are implemented using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

Private attacks in longest chain proof-of-stake protocols with single secret leader elections

Sarah Azouvi, Daniele Cappelletti

Single Secret Leader Elections have recently been proposed as an improved leader election mechanism for proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchains. However, the security gain they provide has not been quantified. In this work, we present a comparison of PoS longest-chain protocols that are based on Single Secret Leader Elections (SSLE) - that elect exactly one leader per round - versus those based on Probabilistic Leader Elections (PLE) - where one leader is elected on expectation. Our analysis shows that when considering the private attack - the worst attack on longest-chain protocols [14] - the security gained from using SSLE is substantial: the settlement time is decreased by ~ 25% for a 33% or 25% adversary. Furthermore, when considering grinding attacks, we find that the security threshold is increased by 10% (from 0.26 in the PLE case to 0.36 in the SSLE case) and the settlement time is decreased by roughly 70% for a 20% adversary in the SSLE case.

Attacks and Security Proofs of Password Authenticated Key-Exchange Protocols

SALA, Petra

The vast majority of communication on the Internet and private networks heavily relies on Public-key infrastructure (PKI). One possible solution, to avoid complexities around PKI, is to use Password Authenticated Key-Exchange (PAKE) protocols. PAKE protocols enable a secure communication link between the two parties who only share a low-entropy secret (password). PAKEs were introduced in the 1990s, and with the introduction of the first security models and security proofs in the early 2000s, it was clear that PAKEs have a potential for wide deployment - filling the gap where PKI falls short. PAKEs' PKI-free nature, resistance to phishing attacks and forward secrecy are just some of the properties that make them interesting and important to study. This dissertation includes three works on various aspects of PAKEs: an attack on an existing PAKE proposal, an application of PAKEs in login (for password leak detection) and authentication protocols (HoneyPAKEs), and a security analysis of the J-PAKE protocol, that is used in practice, and its variants. In our first work, we provide an empirical analysis of the zkPAKE protocol proposed in 2015. Our findings show that zkPAKE is not safe against offline dictionary attacks, which is one of the basic security requirements of the PAKE protocols. Further, we demonstrate an implementation of an efficient offline dictionary attack, which emphasizes that, it is necessary to provide a rigorous security proof when proposing a new protocol. In our second contribution, we propose a combined security mechanism called HoneyPAKE. The HoneyPAKE construction aims to detect the loss of password files and ensures that PAKE intrinsically protects that password. This makes the PAKE part of the HoneyPAKE more resilient to server-compromise and pre-computation attacks which are a serious security threat in a client-server communication. Our third contribution facilitates the wider adoption of PAKEs. In this work, we revisit J-PAKE and simplify it by removing a non-interactive zero knowledge proof from the last round of the protocol and derive a lighter and more efficient version called sJ-PAKE. Furthermore, we prove sJ-PAKE secure in the indistinguishability game-based model, the so-called Real-or-Random, also satisfying the notion of perfect forward secrecy.

A Blockchain-Based Multi-Factor Authentication Model for a Cloud-Enabled Internet of Vehicles

Victor R. Kebande, Feras M. Awaysheh, Richard A. Ikuesan, Sadi Alawadi · 5 authors

Continuous and emerging advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have enabled Internet-of-Things (IoT)-to-Cloud applications to be induced by data pipelines and Edge Intelligence-based architectures. Advanced vehicular networks greatly benefit from these architectures due to the implicit functionalities that are focused on realizing the Internet of Vehicle (IoV) vision. However, IoV is susceptible to attacks, where adversaries can easily exploit existing vulnerabilities. Several attacks may succeed due to inadequate or ineffective authentication techniques. Hence, there is a timely need for hardening the authentication process through cutting-edge access control mechanisms. This paper proposes a Blockchain-based Multi-Factor authentication model that uses an embedded Digital Signature (MFBC_eDS) for vehicular clouds and Cloud-enabled IoV. Our proposed MFBC_eDS model consists of a scheme that integrates the Security Assertion Mark-up Language (SAML) to the Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities for a connected edge to cloud ecosystem. MFBC_eDS draws an essential comparison with the baseline authentication scheme suggested by Karla and Sood. Based on the foundations of Karla and Sood's scheme, an embedded Probabilistic Polynomial-Time Algorithm (ePPTA) and an additional Hash function for the Pi generated during Karla and Sood's authentication were proposed and discussed. The preliminary analysis of the proposition shows that the approach is more suitable to counter major adversarial attacks in an IoV-centered environment based on the Dolev-Yao adversarial model while satisfying aspects of the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad.

EthClipper: A Clipboard Meddling Attack on Hardware Wallets with Address Verification Evasion

Nikolay Ivanov, Qiben Yan

Hardware wallets are designed to withstand malware attacks by isolating their private keys from the cyberspace, but they are vulnerable to the attacks that fake an address stored in a clipboard. To prevent such attacks, a hardware wallet asks the user to verify the recipient address shown on the wallet display. Since crypto addresses are long sequences of random symbols, their manual verification becomes a difficult task. Consequently, many users of hardware wallets elect to verify only a few symbols in the address, and this can be exploited by an attacker. In this work, we introduce EthClipper, an attack that targets owners of hardware wallets on the Ethereum platform. EthClipper malware queries a distributed database of pre-mined accounts in order to select the address with maximum visual similarity to the original one. We design and implement a EthClipper malware, which we test on Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey wallets. To deliver computation and storage resources for the attack, we implement a distributed service, ClipperCloud, and test it on different deployment environments. Our evaluation shows that with off-the-shelf PCs and NAS storage, an attacker would be able to mine a database capable of matching 25% of the digits in an address to achieve a 50% chance of finding a fitting fake address. For responsible disclosure, we have contacted the manufactures of the hardware wallets used in the attack evaluation, and they all confirm the danger of EthClipper.

Secure Online Examination with Biometric Authentication and Blockchain-Based Framework

Xiaoling Zhu, Chenglong Cao

E-learning has been carried out all over the world and then online examinations have become an important means to check learning effect during the outbreak of COVID-19. Participant authenticity, data integrity, and access control are the assurance to online examination. The existing online examination schemes cannot provide the protection of biometric features and fine-grained access control. Particularly, they did not discuss how to resolve some disputes among students, teachers, and a platform in a fair and reasonable way. We propose a novel biometric authentication and blockchain-based online examination scheme. The examination data are encrypted to store in a distributed system, which can be obtained only if the user satisfies decryption policy. And the pieces of evidence are recorded in a blockchain network which is jointly established by some credible institutions. Unlike other examination authentication systems, face templates in our scheme are protected using a fuzzy vault and a cryptographic method. Furthermore, educational administrative department can determine who the real initiator of malicious behavior is when a dispute arises using a dispute determination protocol. Analysis shows that no central authority is required in our scheme; the collusion of multiple users cannot obtain more data; even if the authorities compromise, biometric features of each user will not be leaked. Therefore, in terms of privacy-preserving biometric templates, fine-grained access, and dispute resolution, it is superior to the existing schemes.

Securing biometric authentication system using blockchain

Youn Kyu Lee, Jongwook Jeong

Biometric authentication systems have major security weaknesses: risk of biometric information leakage, unreliability of authentication modules, and non-transparency of biometric information management. This paper presents BDAS, a new biometric authentication system using blockchain, which provides a decentralized and distributed mechanism for processing biometric authentication and an auditable mechanism for managing biometric information. BDAS’s evaluation demonstrates that it provides reliable and secure authentication compared to existing methods while introducing negligible performance overhead in real-world scenarios.

Xu Yang, Xuechao Yang, Xun Yi, Ibrahim Khalil · 8 authors

Over the past decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) is widely adopted in various domains, including education, commerce, government, and healthcare. There are also many IoT-based applications drawn significant attentions in recent years. With the increasing numbers of the connected devices in the IoT system, one of the challenging tasks is to ensure devices’ authenticity, which allows users to have a high confidence in the decision. In addition, due to the heterogeneity of the IoT system and the resource-constrained devices, how to efficiently manage such system and guarantee the security and privacy for devices is concerned. In this article, we proposed a new blockchain-based authentication scheme to meet the challenges. Our proposed framework combines the blockchain technique and the modular square root algorithm to achieve an effective authentication process. Besides, we demonstrate the security and utility of the proposed scheme by providing the security analysis and the detailed experiment.

Identity and access management using distributed ledger technology: A survey

Fariba Ghaffari, Komal Gilani, E. Bertin, Noël Crespi

Summary As the basic building block of any information security system, identity and access management (IAM) solutions play vital role in enterprise's security programmes. Providing centric solutions for IAM is inefficient in terms of having single point of failure, high cost, duplication and complexity to the users. Recently, emerging the distributed ledger technology (DLT) has attracted significant scientific interests in research areas like identity management, authentication and access control processes. In these contexts, Blockchain can offer greater data and rule confidentiality and integrity, as well as increasing the availability of the system by removing the single point of failure in the procedure. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the IAM solutions based on their basic components including identity management, authentication and access control. In the identity concept, we discuss about self‐sovereign identity which enhances privacy and security of distributed digital identities by providing individual's consolidated digital identity and verified attributes for enabling them to utilize their ownership. To offer a clearer understanding of the state of the art, we propose taxonomy to categorize them based on their features. For the conclusion of the paper, we compare the existing methods based on proposed taxonomy. Also, considering the advantages and disadvantages of existing methods, we discussed about the possible future directions.

A Scalable Block Chain Framework for User Identity Management in a Decentralized Network

R. Geetha, T. V. Padmavathy, G. Umarani Srikanth

Abstract In a decentralized network every user makes use of personal identity details at different places for various services and these details are shared with third-parties without their consent and stored at an unknown location. Organizations like government, banks and social platforms are considered to be the weakest point in the current identity management system as they are vulnerable which leads to compromising billions of user identity data. Block chain based User Identity Management is a solution which provides a decentralized environment that manages the user identity data and their related Know-Your-Customer (KYC) documents in a distributed ledger. All the transactions of the network are stored in the block which is a type of a data structure and these blocks are validated using the powerful consensus algorithms and linked to form a block chain. Smart contracts will act as an interface between the client and the block chain network. User’s information cannot be provided to any third party vendors without the explicit consent of the user. This paper proposes a framework for User Identity Management using Block chain technology in a decentralized Network. The proposed framework ensures a high level privacy and security for the personal identity details and the documents. In addition to that the performance analysis of the framework is presented in terms of Transaction, Mining Resource and Difficulty Variation.

Fast Mutual Authentication Using RSA Moduli

А. В. Анисимов, Andrey Novokshonov

We describe a fast three-round mutual authentication protocol for parties A and B belonging to the same coalition group. Parties A and B keep their own independent long-term private keys that are used in the process of authentication and can be used for other purposes. The scheme assumes an initial setup with a trusted third party T. This party initiates another secret information that includes factors of a large RSA modulus. For authentication, both parties must demonstrate each other the knowledge of their private keys without revealing them and the ability to factorize a large RSA modulus. Thus, the protocol based on the suggested scheme provides reciprocal authentication. The scheme possesses all desirable properties of an interactive proof, i.e., completeness, soundness, and zero-knowledge. The security of the protocol relies on assumptions of difficulty of the RSA factorization and existence of a cryptographic hash function.

Blockchain-IoT Sensor (BIoTS): A Solution to IoT-Ecosystems Security Issues

Carlos González-Amarillo, Cristian Leonardo Cárdenas-García, Miguel Mendoza-Moreno, Gustavo Ramírez-González · 5 authors

Sensor devices that act in the IoT architecture perception layer are characterized by low data processing and storage capacity. These reduced capabilities make the system ubiquitous and lightweight, but considerably reduce its security. The IoT-based Food Traceability Systems (FTS), aimed at ensuring food safety and quality, serve as a motivating scenario for BIoTS development and deployment; therefore, security challenges and gaps related with data integrity are analyzed from this perspective. This paper proposes the BIoTS hardware design that contains some modules built-in VHDL (SHA-256, PoW, and SD-Memory) and other peripheral electronic devices to provide capabilities to the perception layer by implementing the blockchain architecture's security requirements in an IoT device. The proposed hardware is implemented on FPGA Altera DE0-Nano. BIoTS can participate as a miner in the blockchain network through Smart Contracts and solve security issues related to data integrity and data traceability in an Blockchain-IoT system. Blockchain algorithms implemented in IoT hardware opens a path to IoT devices' security and ensures participation in data validation inside a food certification process.

Security Enhancement in Smart Vehicle Using Blockchain-based Architectural Framework

S. Smys, Haoxiang Wang

The concept of interconnecting smart vehicles and advancements in automotive automation leads to beneficial outcomes, such as a reduction in road fatalities and congestion. However, including a chain of automation in the attack surface will expand the attack surface and expose the security of automobiles to malicious infiltration. The proposed methodology provides access to specific users while restricting the third party requests. Moreover, it also makes use of data exchange that takes place between the roadside units and vehicle to track the vehicle status without compromising the in-vehicle network. To ensure a valid and authentic communication, vehicles with a proper and verifiable record will only be allowed to exchange messages in the blockchain network. Using qualitative arguments, we have identified that the proposed work is resilient to identified attacks. Similarly, quantitative experimentation indicates that this methodology shows a storage size compatibility and suitable response time in realistic scenarios. Simulation results indicate that, the proposed work shows positive results to secure vehicular networks, vehicular forensics and trust management.

Steganographic Analysis of Blockchains

Alexandre Augusto Giron, Jean Everson Martina, Ricardo Felipe Custódio

Steganography is one of the ways to hide data between parties. Its use can be worrisome, e.g., to hide illegal communications. Researchers found that public blockchains can be an attractive place to hide communications; however, there is not much evidence of actual use in blockchains. Besides, previous work showed a lack of steganalysis methods for blockchains. In this context, we present a steganalysis approach for blockchains, evaluating it in Bitcoin and Ethereum, both popular cryptocurrencies. The main objective is to answer if one can find steganography in real case scenarios, focusing on LSB of addresses and nonces. Our sequential analysis included 253 GiB and 107 GiB of bitcoin and ethereum, respectively. We also analyzed up to 98 million bitcoin clusters. We found that bitcoin clusters could carry up to 360 KiB of hidden data if used for such a purpose. We have not found any concrete evidence of hidden data in the blockchains. The sequential analysis may not capture the perspective of the users of the blockchain network. In this case, we recommend clustering analysis, but it depends on the clustering method's accuracy. Steganalysis is an essential aspect of blockchain security.
