Agility of Construction Curricula in Adopting Emerging Technologies
Abstract
This study reviews technology-related aspects of construction management programs across US universities. The construction industry is experiencing rapid digital transformation, with firms accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and advanced building information modeling (BIM) since 2022. This momentum is reshaping industry expectations, yet construction curricula often fail to adapt within the traditional six-year accreditation cycle. Projected growth in global construction and the anticipated productivity gains from AI and automation underscore the urgency of aligning education with evolving industry needs. Despite these shifts, many programs lag in preparing graduates. Proficiency in BIM and cloud-based collaboration tools is now a basic prerequisite for entry-level roles, but advanced BIM (4D/5D), generative AI, and digital twin systems remain absent from the majority of curricula. To close this gap, programs should prioritize dynamic updates, expand hands-on learning with emerging technologies such as AI simulations and drone mapping, and strengthen industry collaborations to co-develop modules on topics such as generative design and blockchain. Preliminary findings reveal widening misalignment, highlighting untapped opportunities for agile, industry-aligned construction education.
