Blockchain for Healthcare Data Security in the Metaverse: A Comprehensive Study
Abstract
The healthcare industry has its benefits and limitations with the advent of technology integration in this domain. Although digitalized healthcare provides uninterrupted access to healthcare services, there is always a question of the integrity of healthcare records. Breaches are possible in patient data leakage and patient credentials theft, which results in financial loss to the industry. The various studies proved blockchain technology is the alternate solution to preserve data from such breaches. The blockchain ensures decentralized data storage for healthcare organizations, despite any breach, with data availability and accessibility across various locations. The cryptographic algorithms waived in the blockchain secure the data and preserve data record properties like verifiability, traceability, and immutability on any data compromised scenario. As cited in IBM&s;s 2023 Data Breach report and HCA Healthcare, data breach incidents have been witnessed for more than 13 years, which hugely impact the healthcare industry in terms of financial loss, including the cost to protect the data from any such incident. The reassessment of cybersecurity measures and anticipation of such attacks are essential to prevent such incidents in the future. Also, all healthcare data providers must maintain a consensus of adhering to the data maintenance and protection measures according to the HIPAA and SOC2 standards. Along with standards, the usage of blockchain storage, with its risk mitigation controls, provides a reliable solution needed for the healthcare industry to proactively address cybersecurity. The authors made a comprehensive study of notable cybersecurity challenges that threaten the healthcare sector in the context of a metaverse environment and recommend viable solutions that can be put into practice. In conclusion, blockchain-based data storage is crucial for the healthcare industry as it ensures the protection of sensitive medical data and offers a cost-effective storage solution.
