Blockchain for Digital Identity

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive picture of how blockchain technology is connected to digital identity. For this purpose, self-sovereign identity, the most promising implementation of digital identity, is introduced. It transfers the ownership back to the user and provides active management of their own data. The role of blockchain in this ecosystem is to act as a trust anchor for all involved parties and as a decentralized communication layer without direct connections and without the need to exchange personal data. A compilation of current use cases shows the variety of possible applications for this technology.
