The blockchain road to cryptocurrency: A revolution that is transforming money

Abstract

The fast evolving field of cryptocurrency emerged in 2009 when an anonymous software programmer, going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto, solved a significant communication problem known to mathematicians as the Byzantine General's Problem. The problem was how to communicate privately and securely, across a hostile terrain, with no chance of the communication being intercepted or corrupted. Nakamoto named his solution the blockchain. It gave rise to the world's first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. Not long after publishing the Bitcoin White Paper, Nakamoto went silent and has not been heard from since.
