Money in Digital Assets

Authors:Jashim KhanRussell Belk

Abstract

The definition and boundaries of digital assets are often misunderstood. People have different interpretations of digital assets, often mystifying digital content with digital financial assets. Some digital content has personal relevance, while others are meant for the public. Their ownership and value are linked to financial, personal and social meanings and often accompany nostalgic experiences. This chapter aims to define financial and non-financial digital assets, as well as the role of the meaning of money in digital assets. We conducted a comprehensive literature review to answer our research question: what are digital assets? We gathered additional data from public forums, videos and live broadcasts using AI-generated algorithms to explore the meaning of money in digital assets. A financial digital asset is characterized by distributed ledger technology, interoperability and tokenization. Non-financial digital assets include collectibles, domain names, digital content, reputation ratings and databases. This chapter concludes with public perceptions of money in digital assets.
