The rapid expansion of blockchain technology has led to a surge in patent filings, reflecting intense innovation and competition in this emerging frontier. This chapter examines the “patent boom” in blockchain, analyzing trends, drivers, and implications for technology development, commercialization, and intellectual property management. Key areas of blockchain innovation, such as consensus mechanisms, smart contracts, cryptographic methods, decentralized finance (DeFi), supply chain solutions, and digital identity, are explored in the context of patent activity. The chapter also discusses the geographic and institutional distribution of blockchain patents, highlighting leading countries, companies, and research organizations.
