Abstract
This chapter explores the transformative impact of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology on financial transactions. It delves into the challenges of ensuring currency legitimacy and authenticity in traditional and digital transactions, highlighting the growing desire to bypass intermediary institutions like banks. The chapter discusses the emergence of cryptocurrency as a decentralized virtual currency and its various types, including payment cryptocurrencies, utility tokens, stablecoins, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). It also explores the historical origins of blockchain technology, tracing its roots to the 1980s and its evolution into the revolutionary force it is today.
