Exploring Cryptographic Protocols for Enhancing Trust in Digital Voting Systems
Abstract
Digital voting systems offer significant benefits in terms of accessibility and efficiency for electoral processes. However, ensuring trust in these systems remains a critical challenge due to concerns around vote privacy, integrity, and verifiability. Cryptographic protocols have become essential tools to address these challenges by providing mathematically grounded guarantees of security and transparency. This article examines prominent cryptographic approaches—such as homomorphic encryption, mix-nets, zero-knowledge proofs, and blockchain technology—applied in digital voting. Their contributions toward enhancing voter privacy, election verifiability, and resistance to coercion are analyzed. The paper concludes with discussion on practical deployment challenges and future research directions.
