Data Protection and Blockchain Technologies

Abstract

Blockchain technology (or distributed ledger technology) is one of the most promising new methods to combine the advantages of digital networks with a technical protection against modifications of content. However, exactly this feature – being safe against ex post alterations – is one of the key problems regarding the conflict between data protection and blockchain technology. Moreover, the specification of the one who could be the addressee of data protection regulations turns out to be a major problem, besides the international transfer of data. The article deals with general problems of blockchain technology with regard to the GDPR.
