Abstract

The mainstream use of distributed ledger technology and block-chain based crypto-assets could represent the biggest change to the payments landscape within the next decade. This chapter provides a high-level background on blockchain and crypto-assets before considering the emergence of stablecoins as an influence on the payments landscape and analysing the present and potential future UK and EU regulatory approaches to the use of crypto-assets in financial services.
