The Leisures of Blockchains

Abstract

The aim of this short chapter is to examine a series of elements within the praxis of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be termed as “nefarious elements” and pertain to scams of various sorts. These elements resonate with concerns regarding blockchain technologies more broadly, and in the domain of NFTs include phishing, plagiarized NFTs, counterfeit NFTs, fake airdrops, impersonations, rug pulls, wash trading, and pump-and-dump schemes. The chapter argues that credible responses to the rife scams will only help in assuaging concerns that still loom in the NFT space, and that the elements of disvalue must be remedied through a co-creative and multistakeholder effort.
