A Review on Exploring Blockchain-Enabled VANET Solutions for Sustainable Solid Waste Management
Abstract
With rapid urban population growth, particularly in developing countries, solid waste management has become challenging as the process has proved ineffective and dilapidated. However, the limited resources, outdated technology and inefficient systems of traditional waste management limit inappropriate resources, leading to unsanitary conditions, health risks and environmental hazards. The rest of this study elaborates on Blockchain Enabled Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) as a transformational answer to Smart Solid Waste Management Systems (SSWMS). This approach complements blockchain's data management capability with the VANET's real time communication while augmenting waste management operation's transparency, efficiency and security with the secure and immutable data provided by blockchain. A framework for the said dependency proposal is proposed which leverages Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to allow for data handling to be decentralized without a central authority so that waste collection data is spread across vehicles, roadside units (RSUs) and central control systems.
