The Secret World of Cryptocurrencies

Abstract

This chapter examines the complex domain of cryptocurrencies, tracing their inception, development and the enigmatic figure behind the creation of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. It commences by investigating the impetus behind the emergence of cryptocurrencies in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, when Nakamoto published his seminal research paper proposing a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. The chapter elucidates the key features of cryptocurrencies, such as their decentralized nature, the utilization of cryptographic techniques for security and the finite supply of digital coins. It also provides a historical overview, referencing early experiments with digital cash and the contributions of pioneers like David Chaum, Wei Dai and Nick Szabo. The ascent of Bitcoin is documented, from initial regulatory skepticism to its increasing acceptance as a legitimate means of payment across various countries. Furthermore, the mining process of Bitcoins is explicated in detail, including the role of miners, the proof-of-work and proof-of-stake algorithm and the utilization of specialized hardware. The chapter concludes by discussing the future prospects of cryptocurrencies and their potential to transform the financial landscape.
