Understanding Blockchain Consensus Mechanisms: A Review of Existing Approaches and Innovations

Authors:Gourab BiswasPriyanshu RanjanNishant Kumar ChaubeyArup Sarkar

Abstract

Blockchain technology has emerged as a groundbreaking distributed solution, with consensus mechanisms being its foundation to attain trust and security in between non trusting parties. Consensus protocols are basically an agreement which guarantees that distributed nodes in a blockchain network agree on something without the intervention of any central authority. Diversity and complexity of consensus mechanisms introduce opportunities and challenges in terms of scalability, security, energy efficiency, speed and decentralization. This paper presents a thorough survey of the diverse range of consensus protocols that have been proposed for blockchain systems. Broadly these consensus algorithms can be divided into 2 parts, one is permissioned and another is permissionless. We discuss the foundational consensus algorithms, such as Proof of Work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS), and Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), and then the newer and more experimental ones such as Proof of Authority (PoA), Proof of Space (PoSpace), and hybrid consensus models. The survey summarizes the pros and cons and trade-off for every protocol in their use case scenarios, performance evaluation metrics, and security features. Furthermore, we provide insight into ongoing innovation trends toward remedying the limitations intrinsic to the standard consensus paradigm, e.g., scalability and power issues. Lastly, the paper provides a vision for future research and potential enhancement of blockchain consensus mechanisms and their influence on the evolution of blockchain ecosystems in different industries.
